Reps seek quick solution to kidnapping

From Tony Akowe, Abuja

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government and its security agents to end kidnapping, armed robbery, killings and other acts of criminality across the country.

It expressed worry about the increase in crime wave on the Abuja/Lokoja/Kabba road and other major roads across the country. The lawmakers expressed concern that many Nigerians dreaded to travel on the roads because of such attacks.

They said it was worrisome that many people had been killed on the road in the last few days.

The resolution arose from a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Leke Abejide (APC, Kogi) on the need to address the recent kidnapping, killings and armed robbery on the roads. The lawmaker said the menace had seemingly defied solution.

He added that passengers on the Abuja/Lokoja road were being kidnapped daily while armed robbers were having a field day in the area.

According to him, the incidents call to question the capacity of security agencies to rise to the occasion. Abejide urged security services to restore the confidence of Nigerians, especially those travelling for the Christmas celebration.

Khadijat Abba Ibrahim said the nation’s roads were daily experiencing kidnapping and armed robbery, adding that something urgent should be done to address the menace.

Abdulganiyu Olododo (APC, Kwara) said Nigerians were afraid to travel because the roads were no longer safe, adding that enough security should be provided on the roads.

Aneifiok Luke (PDP, Akwa Ibom) called for exchange of intelligence among the security agencies.
