Residents enjoy medical outreach

By Oyebola Owolabi

Constituents of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) were yesterday treated to a free medical outreach sponsored by the lawmaker representing the constituency in the House of Assembly, Lanre Oshun.

Beneficiaries were treated to free eye tests, medication and glasses. There was also free HIV test.

Oshun said: “The outreach is a way of giving back to the society. Many of them have eye issues but they don’t know, either because they are not interested or because they don’t have the money to get treatment, so they ignored it. “So many of these preventable issues can lead to blindness so I felt I should intervene to ameliorate their suffering. I want to support my constituents as much as I can.

“W planned for 1,000 beneficiaries, but with the crowd, it might be more than that, and I am so impressed with the massive turnout. What we planned for is to provide 250 people with glasses and another 250 with eyedrops. Cataract operation will depend on the number of demand following this outreach. However, the figure might eventually rise because of the number of people we have here today. We cannot sponsor those with glaucoma because it is a long term treatment but we will support them in whatever way we can.”

A beneficiary, Bolane Aileru, urged other public office holders, especially Oshun’s colleagues in the Assembly, to emulate the gesture.

Aileru, who is the Vice Chairman of Yaba LCDA, said: “Lanre Oshun has done this of his freewill to say thank you to us for voting him. He singlehandedly brought this for us the community. I was well attended to and it is well organised, we cannot have it better than this.

“I was registered and took my turn through the queue to get my eye tested and get my glasses. It is good that this is beyond just testing, but also giving free medicines and glasses to beneficiaries.”

Tajudeen Adeniyi, a former adviser to former Governor Akinwumi Ambode, hailed the gesture as fantastic. “Oshun deserves kudos for caring about his community and giving back to the people who put him where he is today.

“The process is fast and there is crowd control. It is pleasing and I am satisfied with the service. I hail Oshun for loving his people and bringing this care to them, and I pray God to bless him more.”
