The Ngo community in Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, has appealed to the State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to reopen their general hospital, which was shut down in February 2020, following insecurity in the area.

The President, National Union of Andoni Students (NUAS), Efuk Festus, during a tour of the facility on Wednesday lamented that the facility had been overtaken by overgrown vegetation and rodents.

He said reopening the hospital would help to save lives in the community.

It was gathered that doctors posted to the health facility fled the area following rising fears of insecurity especially kidnapping.

Festus said: “Our general hospital has been locked since February this year, grasses have overtaken it and its saddening, sick people here are usually stranded in terms of accessing medical assistance.

“We are begging the Governor to immediately order the reopening of the facility for the sake of the good Obolo people, our people are suffering.

“This is the seventh month this hospital has continued under lock, we heard that doctors have been posted here, we are yet to see them, and this is making us worried.”

Efforts to reach the state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof. Princewill Chike, through telephone calls and a text message, failed to yield expected results as he refused to respond to any of them.
