Rotary empowers 20 youths at RYLA

Rotary International District 9110 has empowered 20 youths for their outstanding performance during the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RLYA) programme in Lagos.

Participants were drawn from all over the country to attend the 10-day programme held in April. Of the number, only 20 youths gave a good account of themselves, leading to their being given scholarships worth N100,000 each to study web design at APTECH in Victoria Island, Lagos State, the RYLA Chairman, Ben Okhumale, said.

Azuh Arinze of Rotary Club of Ikeja South, explained that RYLA is 35 years old. The scheme is for youths between 18 and 35 aimed at catching them young, take them to take a location away from their homes and train them in areas such as public speaking, leadership, academics and give them business advice.

He however added that overall objective is to build future leaders and those who would able to do start their businesses without necessarily relying on the government. ‘’We have been doing this since 1985,’’ he said, adding that over 15,000 had been trained.

Immediate past District 9110 Governor Bola Oyebade, a beneficiary of RYLA, while presenting the awards, added that the aim of Rotary is empower the youth. He thanked clubs and organisations that sponsored the programme.

A beneficiary, Olajumoke Omobolaji Adams said: ‘I am happy. RYLA has opened doors for opportunities for jobs for me. It added value to our lives, allowing us to be professionals.’’

 

Vindo Kaurani of Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic was also an awardee.
