Sanusi kicks against borrowing for consumption

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has called on the Federal Government to avoid borrowing for consumption.

Also, he asked those calling for Nigeria’s breakup to have a rethink.

Speaking during the launch of his book ‘For the Good of The Nation’ in Lagos, he said there was the need to cut Nigeria’s passion for debts, and maintain fiscal discipline.

Sanusi, a former Emir of Kano,  added that there was no need to keep borrowing to consume.

“This generation cannot continue to borrow to consume,” he advised.  He emphasised the gains of educating the girl child  and promoting gender equality.

“I don’t want Nigeria to breakup because I am a beneficiary of Nigeria’s unity. We have to keep Nigeria together. Those seeking breakup of the country do not know what they are doing,” he said.

He said being alive was a great achievement for him, adding that he led the first riot at the age of eight.

He said he would be raising $2 million for the Mohammadu Sanusi II SDG Challenge to support the most vulnerable in the society, especially empowering women and the girl child.

Also, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, pledged that the apex bank and the Bankers’ Committee would raise $2 million in five years to support Sanusi’s drive towards supporting the girl child.

“This generation will continue borrowing to consume while passing the debt to the next generation to pay. It is difficult decision to pass but we have to pass it. Because if we don’t make it and you keep giving Nigerians everything they want today, at the end of the day you will leave the country on time bomb.

“These decisions have to be taken to put this country on the path of fiscal sustainability and we all have to make these sacrifices and we have to stop relying on the government for everything,” he added.

Also, in his opening remarks, the Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, who is also the Chairman of Body of Bank CEOs, said: “ Sanusi for his 60th birthday decided to gift to Nigeria with something that he was going to work tirelessly on – one of the SDGs – and that is the one that has to do with making quality education accessible for all, promotion of lifelong learning and more importantly around gender equality.”
