  • 2015: We will support candidate with youth vision- Youth Group

Youth development group, Progressive Leadership for African Youth Empowerment & Development (PLAYED) has thrown its weight behind any candidate which can guarantee a forty percent youth inclusion, ahead of the 2015 presidential elections.

Rotimi Osiyoye, the National President of the organisation who made this known in an interview said that with about 70 percent of Nigeria’s population made up of young people, the youths can determine the fate of Nigeria in the next election by voting rightly for a youth focused candidate.

“Regardless of party affiliations, Progressive Leadership for African Youth Empowerment & Development (P.L.A.Y.E.D) will solidly support any candidate with clear-cut programmes for the youths.  To be specific, any candidate with plans to constitute a government with forty percent youth inclusion will have our unwavering and unreserved support,” he said.

Osiyoye, who also identified leadership as the bane of Nigeria’s development said his organisation is ready to proffer the solution to Nigeria’s leadership problems by focusing on the large population of youths in Nigeria and training them in leadership skills.

He called on Nigerian youths to join efforts and rescue Nigeria. “There is thus an urgent need for youths to join forces to rescue our rapidly deteriorating society. This is one of the major aims of P.L.A.Y.E.D. Furthermore, the population of selfless and development-oriented leaders who are youths is abysmally low. The need for a new class of selfless and development-oriented leaders to make a positive impact in our society and challenge the status quo cannot be overemphasised.”

Osiyoye said his organisation, with an estimated active membership of two million young people is actively involved in the training of young people in Nigeria to assume leadership position through seminal and workshops. He said members of PLAYED also get involved in community development projects.

He called on Nigerian youths to take responsibility for the future of the country by actively participating in the development process which his organisation is leading. “We have a choice of either adopting the ‘siddon look’ posture and watch things deteriorate or to join hands with a veritable instrument for societal reengineering as P.L.A.Y.E.D to rescue our country from crisis.”

  • Kano 2015: Why Risqua is the man

Kano 2015: Why Risqua is the man

In this knowledge-driven and youth-oriented world, the greatest treasure of a people is to have a leader who is in sync with modernity to lead it to the utopian world of progress. If a state as historic and important as Kano routinely gets into the news for the bad reason – from drug abuse to breakdown of epidemics, it certainly needs redemption. We need someone to rescue the state to a better clime.

The Kano of today requires a pragmatic leader who is in tune with current events trends and development all over the world. Indeed, the future of Kano depends largely on a quintessential leader blessed with vision, focus, commitment, resourcefulness, exposure, dynamism, hard work, fearlessness, noble family background and above all, credibility and the fear of God. For the state to fit rightly into the modern society, the major catalyst is for it to be steered by one who knows exactly the direction developed all is headed to. Abba Risqua Muhammed perfectly fits this description.

Abba Risqua Muhammed, for outsiders, is the only surviving son of late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammad. When his father was tragically murdered by some people opposed to Nigeria’s progress in 1976, Abba Risqua was only six years old. He is now 45: fully made man and accomplished in all respects. A graduate of Banking and Finance from the University of Lagos, he also holds a Postgraduate Diploma from the prestigious Cardiff Business School, Wales, United Kingdom. He is also a trustee of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, an NGO that has done a lot for Kano people and other Nigerians.

In terms of leadership and management acumen, Alhaji Abba Risqua had served as the Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo on International Relations from 2000 to 2007. He is now managing his booming business empire as the Group Chief Executive of AMG Petroenergy Limited, one of Africa’s foremost energy service providers.

Coming from that golden heritage of a hero that was late General Muhammed, Abba has no hiding place for people looking for credible individuals to take critical leadership roles. It is therefore for this and his personal attributes as an accomplished man that a number of times people of Kano approach him to make himself available to serve the people by standing in for election. This time around, the magnitude and intensity of the demand is huge. As the 2015 general election beckons, the call is for Abba Risqua to come and take up the governorship seat of Kano per chance the state will have a Midas touch of a scion of late General Muhammed.

There is no gainsaying that General Murtala Muhammed is still regarded as one of Nigeria’s true heroes. He was not only one of those fiercely patriotic sons of the land who defiantly fought to keep Nigeria as one united country; he possesses startling qualities that are cherished by all.  He was detribalized, he was authentic, he was enthusiastic about the progress of the country, he was extraordinarily bold, and he was a patriot who truly loved his country. He was a man in a hurry to accomplish great things. He died in that hurry, in the prime of his life. Imagine what he could have done with power had he lived for a little longer?

It is also worthy of note to mention that as a mark of his prudence and uprightness, when he was assassinated in 1976 while serving as Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he left only N13,000 in his account and one bungalow in Kano – this was despite serving in various other positions at a time of the celebrated oil boom.

Already, a group, Kano Good Governance Project, is spearheading a movement for Abba Risqua Mohammed to answer the calls of the people to throw his hat in the ring. The coordinator of the socio-political movement, Alhaji Shehu Usman Umar, said their call followed “careful and acute dispassionate study of the low and high profile Kano indigenes” the result of the group’s survey revealed that “none has even the semblance of convincing capacity to recapture the state than Risqua Murtala Muhammad the only surviving son of the remarkable General Murtala Ramat Muhammad.”

According to the group: “As the only surviving son of General Murtala Ramat Muhammad, we find it desirous and needful to approach Alhaji Abba Risqua Murtala Muhammad with sincere proposal to come forward and serve people of Kano State, as we are also confident that he would bring to bear the numerous inborn noble leadership qualities bequeathed to him by his great father. Needless to say, this fame and ideal leadership capacity demonstrated by Abba Risqua’s father, have been unequivocally appreciated by uncountable immortalization gestures to the family by individuals, institutions and organizations in both public and private sectors, from local, state and Federal levels”.

This is an ideal time for Abba Risqua to come forth to complement the efforts of his late father in the development of our nation, with Kano as his primary ground. For those of us engaged in the lobby to have Abba Risqua accede to our demands, our message to him remains that this maybe discomforting, or even disruptive of his other engagements but he has an obligation to serve his people whenever they so desire, which we believe would please the resting soul of his late father, of blessed memory.

It is not surprising, however, that Abba Risqua is not jumping at our demand. It is the humility that is characteristic of the lineage. His father showed similar attitude when he was approached to take over Nigeria’s mantle of leadership as the Head of State, for he was quoted as saying to them, “To hell with you! I have said I don’t want to be anybody’s Head of State”. But when he eventually accepted to head the nation, fatefully for 199 days, the nation went through the most remarkable socio-economic revolution ever in the country. Again, like his father, Abba Risqua is only invited, by the people to lead the Kano State Government, because of the confidence they have in him being the most suitable to give Kano the dynamic, purposeful and efficient leadership it requires. Kano identifies with Murtala’s son because he would do what he would be asked to do and even much more to give his fellow indigenes a sense of belonging, hope and strength in the Kano project.

To rescue Kano from some bad influences and turn around its development pace, Abba Risqua is the man for the job. Having Abba Risqua in Kano Government House come 2015 would, in addition to giving Kano a new lease of life, offer the state the benefit of dynamic leadership driven by youthful exuberance with a touch of deep knowledge of issues.

Disabusing the minds of Nigerians on the proposed amendment of the constitution, recommended by the National Conference, Tambuwal said altough the conference was initiated by the Federal Government, but “we legislators will have to subject every recommendation to due process of legislation, as it were”.

The Speaker urged registered Nigerian voters and those of voting ages to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

Tambuwal spoke yesterday in his home town Tambuwal after picking his PVC at the Alhaji Hadi Waziri Ward.

The Speaker said only free, fair and credible elections would earn the confidence of Nigerians who he said were ready to elect better leadership in 2015.

“If nations like Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq can conduct peaceful and credible elections under its challenging atmosphere. We have no reason not to as well.”

Tambuwal hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for trying to improve the electoral process, despite inadequate facilities.

He said: “It is an improvement on the past, and this should be continued by the commission until we get it right.”

According to him, INEC should leverage on its independence to earn the confidence of the electorate.

Tambuwal said: “We, as legislators and government, are working towards a more effective legal frame work that would guarantee INEC autonomy backed by resources through possible amendments of the Act establishing it.”

The Speaker noted that this would enable the commission to maintain a first line charge to guarantee its financial independence.

He added that the National Assembly would soon conduct a public hearing to enable INEC perform better.

2015: Josephine Anenih, others urge Jonathan to run

Women members of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) at the weekend gave President Goodluck Jonathan an ultimatum to declare for the 2015 presidential election.

A former Minister of Women Affairs and member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyom Josephine Anenih, announced the ultimatum in Awka, the Anambra State capital, at a rally organised by TAN for the Southeast zone.

Mrs. Anenih said the women would not want the PDP to play with Dr Jonathan’s right to earn an automatic ticket as the President, as is done in advanced democracies.

She urged the party to give him the ticket.

Mrs Anenih said: “But this is not a PDP rally. I am not here because of PDP. In fact, if this was a PDP rally, I probably would not have come because the party has let me down too many times.

“So, you might ask why I am here. I am here on this platform as a Nigerian woman leader. I am here to tell you that President Goodluck Jonathan has kept faith with Nigerian women by empowering them in a way that no other President has ever done.”

‘PDP may not win Sokoto in 2015’

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Abdullahi Sarkin Gobir Adiya, has cried out over the manner the party is being run in the state.

He said: “Unless this is addressed, PDP may find it difficult to win in Sokoto State in next year’s general elections.”

Speaking to reporters at the weekend in Sokoto, Adiya said former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa is not committed to the ideals of the PDP.

He said the ex-governor might pilot the party to defeat in the general elections.

“Bafarawa is steering the party’s leadership in the wrong direction by running it as his private interest,” Adiya added.

According to him, “the former governor is operating the party for personal gain. Such attitude will not augur well for the PDP, especially now that it is trying to wrest power from the APC.”

Adiya continued: “Bafarawa must work with other stakeholders to make the party strong. He must respect the traditional institution.”

He cautioned him against playing politics with the traditional institution.

Adiya said the traditional institution must not be dragged into partisanship.

He faulted the composition of the newly-inaugurated executives of the party, saying: “It is a complete representation of the ex-governor’s interest.”

2015: What’s in for Mark’s Chief of Staff?

You may or may not notice him. He is a consumate and calculated professional who is almost enslaved by his work.  At the moment, he works round the clock to see to the smooth administration of the office of the President of the Senate. His designation is the Chief of Staff to the President of the Senate. He is Senator George Anthony  Manzo, Fellow Royal College of Surgeons. (FRCS), London . He represented Taraba North Senatorial zone  in the upper legislative chamber between 2007 and 2011.   He is a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP).

He, obviously is not the loud type, but he always have his eyes on the goal. He acts as the brain box of the office, an ideas man who synchronizes and indeed aggregates opinions and views, sieve the chaff from the grain before making informed decisions.

Endowed with  an energetic and strategic  leadership skills, coupled with local and international exposure,  Senator Manzo has in the last three and half years  managed the office of the President of the Senate with its associated huge responsibilities smoothly albeit, successfully.

An innovative and result -oriented leader with extensive planning and negotiation skills and proven ability to take leadership roles and efficiently execute assignment,  Manzo daily oversees the operation of Special Advisers, Special Assistants and other legislative aides to the Principal as well as manage the interrelationship between  and among the various units under the office of the Chief lawmaker of the federation otherwise called No 3 citizen.

During his stint in the Senate between 2007 and 2011, Senator Manzo championed the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2008, National Security Enhancement Bill. 2008, Bill for the amendment of the Pychiatric Hospital Management Board Act, University of Abuja College of Medicine, Mental Health and free Medical centres as well as sponsored a motion on ‘Global Credit Crisis and its impact on Nigeria ‘among others.

As Nigerian Ambassador to  the State of Isreal and High Commissioner to the Republic of Cyprus between 2004 and 2007,  Manzo strengthened and opened new vistas of bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the host nations. It  is instructive to note that his excellent performance as an Ambassador unarguably earned him the ticket to the Senate in 2007.

A proficient Surgeon of a very high repute, Manzo has  in the mean time dropped the stethoscope, a call to save lives to a call to serve the larger number of people through the instrumentality of politics.

Before his foray into the murky waters of Nigerian politics, Manzo was a medical practitioner and Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Specialist Hospital, Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Consultant surgeon, Commissioner for Health, Taraba State and member State Executive Council among others.

An avid reader, Senator Manzo is an encyclopedia  of sort  at least in the field of surgery.

As the 2015 general elections gathers momentum, the straight jacket question is what’s in for Senator Anthony Manzo? Political pundits  posit that Manzo is eyeing the Government House, Jalingo. But unfolding scenario points to the direction that Manzo is more likely to return to his familiar turf, the Senate dubbed the red chamber of the National Assembly.

For him, the  Taraba  North PDP Senatorial ticket is just for his asking, having done much in terms of service delivery and empowerment of the constituents to earn their trust and confidence. The incumbent Senator Aisha Alhassan has since jumped ship to the emerging All Progressive Congress (APC) and already eyeing the governor’s seat.  All eyes are on  Senator Manzo  to break the ice.

Although , the Senate President’s Chief of Staff is not making any categorical statement  for now, in the next few weeks or months,  the political road- Map for 2015 would be clearer and Manzo would make a loud and unambiguous statement . The electorates are waiting.

2015: Orji, PDP get support on zoning

As 2015 elections draw near, the battle over who succeeds Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State has become keener.

However, the Southeast Progressives Assembly (SEPA), a socio-political group, has declared its support for the decision of Abia State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chapter and Governor Theodore Orji in zoning the 2015 governorship to Abia South Senatorial zone.

In a statement made available to reporters, President of the group, Hon. Ebere Uzoukwa, commended what he described as the ‘statesmanship position of the PDP and its stakeholders as well as Governor Orji to embrace equity, justice and fairness to ensure that Abia South produces the next governor of the state in 2015.

The statement reads: “As a socio-political group entrenched to promote justice, equity and justice as well as to promote and mobilise for good governance in the Southeast, SEPA, having closely monitored political developments in Abia State as regards power sharing and rotation, praises the PDP and Governor Theodore Orji for zoning the governorship position to Abia South.

“Recall that in 1999, Chief (Dr.) Orji Uzor Kalu from Bende Local Government Area had an interrupted eight years for Abia North. Thereafter, power was moved to Abia Central with the incumbent governor, Chief Theodore Ahamefule Orji from Umuahia elected into office as governor in 2007.

“In 2015 when Governor Orji would have completed eight years for Abia Central, morality, equity, justice and fairness demand that the next governor should emerge from Abia South. It is in view of this that SEPA supports the decision of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) and Governor Orji for having regard for equity, justice and fairness to ensure that Abia South produces the next governor in 2015.”

Uzoukwa, who was formerly a member of Governor Rochas Okorocha’s media aides, in the statement also enjoined the people of Ukwa-Ngwa to close ranks and seize the opportunity to ensure that only a credible person with outstanding track record emerges PDP candidate in order to sustain the legacies of Governor Orji when elected as governor of the state.

“SEPA also wishes to enjoin other Ngwa local government areas in Abia Central to jettison their personal interests and support their brothers and sisters in Abia South to ensure that a credible person emerges from that zone. Their continued agitation amounts to selfishness and greed which definitely do not relate with the collective and over-riding interest of the people of Ukwa-Ngwa.

“On the other hand, the people of Ukwa-Ngwa should avoid politicians who are power-drunk and who have not impacted positively on the lives of their people. Some of them have been in power from 2003 and 2007, contributing nothing tangible to the socio- economic development of Ukwa-Ngwa land. They have equally detached themselves completely from the people and owners of the mandate by doing only their biding and that of their family members.

“They are those desperately eyeing the governorship seat of the God’s Own State. Without mincing words, this development is unacceptable to us and the people of Ukwa-Ngwa.

“We hereby advise the people of Ukwa-Ngwa and people of Abia State to rise against this category of politicians and support only credible person with outstanding achievements as well as the capacity to sustain the legacies of Governor Orji.

Ijaw youths, group clash over Jonathan’s reelection

Ijaw youths on Tuesday attacked a South-South group for advising President Goodluck Jonathan to shelve his reelection ambition in 2015.

A group under the aegis of the Forum of Past Youth Leaders of Ethnic Nationalities in the South-South (FPYLENS) had reportedly asked Jonathan to abandon his ambition to return to Aso Rock in 2015.

The forum was said to have given the admonition in a statement signed by Alhaji Mumakai Unagha and Ekpo Okon.

But the forum’s position has drawn the ire of Jonathan’s kinsmen under the aegis of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC).

The youths dismissed the forum saying the group and persons who signed “the provocative” statement were fictitious and unknown to major stakeholders of the region.

The youths in a statement signed by their Spokesman, Mr. Eric Omare, said the report was the handiwork of some inconsequential elements looking for recognition ahead of the 2015 general elections.

“There is no organisation known as Forum of Past Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders in the South-South and the signatories are unknown persons as far as youth leadership in the South-South region is concern”, he said.

He said after perusing the report, the leadership of the IYC consulted with its past leaders and presidents such as Dr. Felix Tuodolor, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, Mr. Jonjon Oyefia, Dr. Chris Ekiyor, Mr. Abiye, T. K. Ogoriba, and others to determine the veracity of the report.

He said all the prominent leaders in the region said they were not part of the said meeting and that there was no such gathering.

He reinstated the commitment of the South-South towards the reelection project of the President in 2015.

He said: “The IYC is in total support of the Jonathan administration and states that the Jonathan 2015 Presidency is a project of the South-South people and the youths of the South-South are irrevocably committed to this project.

“South-South youths are already mobilising towards the re-election of Dr. Jonathan in 2015 in synergy with other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.

“The IYC call on members of the public to disregard the statement purported to have been made by the inconsequential Past South-South Youth Leaders Forum as they do not have the support to organise any anti-Jonathan campaign in any part of the South-South Region”.

2015: G7 PDP aspirants insist on Ibadan consensus candidate

The Group of Seven (G7) governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State who hail from Ibadan, the state capital, insisted yesterday on producing a candidate for the next election.

In a communique issued after its meeting, the group explained that its insistence was based on the  recognition of the political realities in the state.

However, the group said it has never excluded other zones in the governorship arrangements of the party.

The group said: “We are aware of similar meetings at various zones of the state for the governorship slot.”

The G7 emphasised that each state has its own political peculiarities.

It said it was “concerned about winning the next governorship election and forming the next government in Oyo State and therefore encourages contributions and ideas on the best strategies to achieve the objective.”

The group’s goal drew criticism from Ogbomoso where two other aspirants hail from. They are the immediate former governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala and Senator Ayoade Adeseun. Alao-Akala boasted that he would defeat them. Adeseun said Ogbomoso did not anoint Alao-Akala as the sole candidate. He said the members of the G7 were only exercising their fundamental human right.

Adeseun said the decision of PDP members in Ogbomoso was to support whoever wins the governorship ticket in any of the political parties, believing that his success in the election would bring benefits to the zone.

Members of the G7 are Dr Wole Oyelese, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, Prof. Soji Adejumo, Sen. Teslim Folarin, Seyi Makinde and Dr. Azeez Adeduntan.

  • Lagos Catholic Archbishop advises politicians on 2015 elections

Lagos Catholic Archbishop advises politicians on 2015 elections

The Archbishop, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Alfred Martins, has urged politicians not to see the 2015 general elections as do-or-die affair.

In his sermon at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos yesterday, Rev. Martins admonished politicians to use the 2015 elections as stepping stone toward providing quality stewardship to the electorate.

He enjoined Nigerians not to mortgage their future and the future of the coming generation for a mere “pot of pottage’’.

He also advised politicians to learn from history and to always allow the norm that power belongs to the people to guide their political activities.

“The political atmosphere in our country is highly charged with political activities as the year 2015 gradually draws near.

“I urge the good people of Nigeria to take their destiny in their own hands by ensuring that they do not abdicate their responsibility of having a say in those who govern them.

“Nigerians should learn and pursue the path that would lead to good governance, transparency, and accountability,’’ he said.

He also urged the Federal Government to ensure that all electoral rules were enforced with a view to organising successful elections.

Rev.  Martins said: “Anti-democratic attitudes such as political thuggery, rigging, violence, politics of bitterness and acrimony leading to politically motivated assassinations that still characterise our political landscape should be jettisoned.

“A new political orientation that will ensure the success of the forthcoming electoral process should be embraced.’’

The cleric underscored the need for the emergence of committed and patriotic leaders, saying that it behoved on all Nigerians to actively participate in the electoral processes.

“The temptation to embrace rigging and violence as the easy way to win elective offices would be unnecessary if those elected to govern us do so with the fear of God and due regard for the rule of law,’’ he said.

The cleric praised the Federal Government and its security agencies as well as other groups campaigning for the release of the kidnapped Chibok school girls.

He, however, urged the government not to relent in its efforts at securing the release of the girls by exploring all possible ways.

Said Rev. Martins “The insurgency is becoming even more worrisome as it seems that they are now trying to conquer territories that the military have to try and liberate.

“There is a show of lack of respect for human life in the way they indiscriminately detonate explosives killing and wounding people and also blow themselves up as suicide bombers.

“Even more alarming is the trend of the sect members using women and children as weapons of mass destruction.

“It is most disheartening to see women and children blowing themselves up in the guise of fighting a religious war.”
