  • I remain SDP presidential candidate – Duke

Former governor of Cross River, Mr Donald Duke, says he still remains the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and would present himself for the Feb. 16 poll.

Duke said this in a statement on Friday in Lagos, while reacting to the decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to withdraw from the election and adopt President Muhammadu Buhari as its preferred candidate.

“Regardless and for the avoidance of doubt, I Donald Duke, remain on the ballot and the candidate of the SDP as recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“This unfortunate saga is as a result of an aspirant who lost at the party primaries on Oct. 6, 2018, fair and square, does not query the conduct of the primaries but rather resorts to bigotry, querying my suitability to contest for the presidency on grounds that I come from the wrong part of the country.

“The Federal Court of Appeal has put this matter to rest. The office of president does not belong to any party and therefore not for a party to zone,” he said.

Duke identified internal management of party affairs as the bane of the nation’s democracy.
He said his decision to run for the presidency was to afford the electorate a credible alternative.

“My decision to run on an untainted political platform rather than on one which I was a founding member is grounded on a desire to afford our electorate and indeed our nation a clean break, options and alternatives to her current gladiators.

“For the SDP NEC to thereby endorse the APC or any other party, is rather unfortunate and betrays in my opinion, the desire of the vast majority of our party members and Nigerians credible alternatives to our nation’s leadership.

“I need not say more, suffice that I remain on the ballot and thereby still present myself as a candidate for the office of president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Duke said.

The SDP NEC had on Thursday announced the party’s withdrawal from the presidential race while adopting Buhari, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, for the poll.
It explained that the decision was based on the protracted legal issue facing the party.

“We cannot campaign, we cannot do anything because of the protracted legal issue and we feel that it is impeccable to technically withdraw from the presidential election.

“We want to focus on the National Assembly, Governorship and State House of Assemblies election for which we have fielded candidates across the country.

“We are therefore adopting Buhari, the APC Presidential candidate, as our preferred candidate for the Feb. 16 election,” it said.

  • PDP allegations threat to success of polls – Oshiomhole

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has said the series of unsubstantiated allegations and misleading comments by the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against the ruling APC constitute a major threat to the success of the 2019.

Speaking when a delegation of the ECOWAS Election Monitoring Team, led by former President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf visited him, Oshiomhole said it was unfortunate that the PDP were not prepared to abide by the rules, but are instead engaged in actions capable rubbing the name of the nation and that of the Independent National Electoral Commission, in the mud.

Oshiomhole said the APC is working towards ensuring a free and fair election by ensuring that its members comport themselves as true democrats, avoiding hate speeches and sensitization of the electorate to work against rigging.

He said “As the National Chairman of the APC, we are committed to a peaceful election, but unfortunately, the opposition’s language and utterances does not suggest that they want a free and fair election. I believe, because they knew they have lost the elections, seeing the kind of support our candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari has been enjoying so far, as we have seen in our campaigns, the opposition are now in the habit of waking up and making unsubstantiated allegations just to deceive members of the International community.

“Unfortunately, you see some foreign missions believing their lies and issuing statements in support of the PDP. And, that is why some of us are worried that some persons are hiding under the guise of Election Observers to come and discredit our electoral process and also interfere in our elections and our judicial process.

“We observed that on the issue of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. This is a judicial officer who agreed that he erred when he did not declare some of his assets. And we have a situation whereby huge amount of foreign currencies were found in different accounts. And the PDP became the mouth piece of the CJN and they created a wrong impression before the International Community, and we saw joint statements condemning the action of the President, who was acting on the recommendation made by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

“Are you saying that if a crime is conducted on election day, and because it was an election day, the person concerned should not face the law? The President of America today is being investigated over allegation of alleged Russian interference in America election. So, I think all these unsubstantiated allegations are not good for the forthcoming general elections and that is why we believe that the PDP, knowing fully well that they will be rejected by the people at the polls, are trying to create crisis where there is none.”

Leader of the group, Mrs. Helen Johnson Sirleaf, said the entire world is interested in ensuring a peaceful election in Nigeria, “because Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and anything that happens to Nigerian will not only affect the entire Africa, but the world. So, we are appealing to all the parties to preach peace and urge their supporters to pick their PVCs, so that nobody will be disenfranchised.”

Also, in a separate statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the party said the act of intimidating and blackmailing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other state institutions will not stop their impending defeat.

The APC frown at what it described failed the attempt to demonise the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari administration and deploying intimidation and blackmail tactics against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other state institutions ahead of the general election.

Onilu said the PDP’s line of attack cannot affect President Buhari’s emphatic victory in the February 16 election, saying “We have watched how panicky leaders of the PDP have become, having realised that they are heading for a crushing and humiliating defeat in the forthcoming general election.

“In their confused and pitiable state, they have unconscionably hurled pedestrian allegations of partisanship and partiality against INEC and other state institutions.

“The PDP leaders’ strategy is to regularly call out INEC and allege partiality towards the APC, thereby creating doubts in the minds of Nigerians and international community about the independence and credibility of the electoral body.

“This is one of the odious antics of a desperate party that wants to hijack presidential power, not on the strength of having a credible alternative, but on the strength of selfish propaganda with which they mask their real motivation for seeking a return to power — plundering of the public treasury.

“We call on Nigerians to judge between the APC and the PDP, who can be said to have been favoured by INEC when one considers how the electoral body had initially barred the APC from fielding candidates in Zamfara and Rivers States in the forthcoming elections.

“Less than two weeks to elections, our party is still in courts to seek justice from INEC to enable us field candidates. Notwithstanding our protests, calling INEC’s attention to the fact that the PDP didn’t conduct any primaries in Kano State, the electoral body has opted to look the other way even in the face of glaring evidence.

“It is clear that the PDP is only interested in getting to power on a stolen mandate. It was not surprising that the PDP celebrated INEC’s initial decisions on Zamafara and Rivers because the PDP knows they stand no chance against the APC candidates in a free and fair election.”

The APC also expressed shock over PDP’s allegation that the distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) is being hampered by INEC to disenfranchise supposed PDP supporters, saying “how could anyone have known the political party affiliations of those who are yet to collect their PVCs such that the process of disenfranchising them was activated by INEC to favour the APC.

“The PDP and its leaders cannot hold the APC responsible for their electoral misfortunes. PDP administration’s antecedents of treasury looting, mismanagement of the economy and widespread insecurity have put a big wedge between them and the Nigerian people.

“There is no doubt that the PDP will be roundly rejected at the forthcoming general election. On our part, we are confident that Nigerians will renew our mandate on the basis of our verifiable and multi-sector record of performance under the leadership of President Buhari.

  • I did not call for violence, says El-Rufai

…says, trailing reactions are false outrage

Following massive reactions that greeted his statement, Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai has clarified his comments, saying the reactions that followed his comments were false outrage, which he said must stop.

In a statement he issued through his media aide, Samuel Aruwan, El-Rufai insisted that his comments were not call for violence, but a powerful defense of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The Governor said he merely stood up for Nigeria’s dignity in the wake of those who would traduce their country and reduce it to the status of a colony in their vain quest for power.

According to him, “A notorious trait of the characters that constitute the opposition in Nigeria is the manufacture of outrage on flimsy grounds. However, contriving anger on false premises and summoning a din of feverish commentary will not alter the facts. Election season is regarded as silly season in some quarters, but it is a very serious moment.

“When Malam Nasir El-Rufai appeared on NTA’s Tuesday Night Live, he made comments every patriot can understand. He stood up for Nigeria’s dignity in the wake of those who would traduce their country and reduce it to the status of a colony in their vain quest for power.

“The video of his comments is in circulation. Any fair-minded person with modest familiarity with the English language and unimpaired comprehension can understand it. It does not contain any call for violence. What it is a powerful defense of sovereignty? Are some sections of our political class implying that they will acquiesce in or collaborate with foreign intervention in our country?

“Affirming that a country will defend itself against needless intervention is the kind of statement you expect to hear from a patriot. It is not a call for violence. Warning about the consequences of meddling in another country’s affairs is legitimate.

“Non-interference in the affairs of other countries is a basic principle of international law. Threatening to intervene in another country implies the use of force. Those who are basing their electoral calculations on foreign intervention need to be discouraged. Only the lawful votes of the Nigerian people should make or unmake governments.

“Malam Nasir El-Rufai has issued a powerful call for vigilance and a clear notice that other countries should not mistake the supine posture of the opposition for national weakness.

“Malam Nasir El-Rufai has stood firmly against those who have been trying to divide Nigerians on ethnic and religious lines. He is resolutely opposed to violence, and firmly committed to peace and harmony.

“Let the false outrage stop,” El-Rufai said.

  • FG invited our observers, EU replies El-Rufai

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) on Wednesday replied Governor Nasir El-Rufai and said its observers were invited for the February poll by the Federal Government.

It said its observers are always impartial and do not interfere in the electoral process.

It also clarified that its observers will continue their work across the country in the run-up to – and beyond – the 16 February elections.

The EU EOM, which made its position known in a statement in Abuja, said the “security of EU observers is of paramount importance and will remain under constant review.”

The statement said: “We are aware of the comments by the Governor of Kaduna about non-interference by foreigners during a talk show on the elections Tuesday 5 February.

“The EU only deploys an election observation mission when it is invited to do so by the authorities of a country. The EU has been invited to observe all of the general elections in Nigeria since 1999. Thus this is the sixth time the EU is observing elections in Nigeria.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission invited the EU to deploy an observation mission for the 2019 general elections.

“EU election observation missions give commentary and analysis and make recommendations about the electoral process. EU election observation missions are impartial, do not interfere in the electoral process, and operate according to a strict code of conduct.”

Notwithstanding, the EU said its observers will continue to do their work while their security remains under constant review.

While the security of EU observers is of paramount importance, and will remain under constant review, EU observers will continue their work across the country in the run-up to – and beyond – the 16 February elections.

The statement added: “For the last month the mission’s team in Abuja, as well as 40 long-term observers across the country, have followed the elections.

“We have met with a wide range of candidates, parties, election officials, security agencies, and civil society organizations, and have enjoyed good cooperation at federal and state levels.

The mission looks at all aspects of the election, including the campaign tone, the transparency of the election administration, the neutrality of security forces, and the independence of the judiciary.

  • 2019: IDPs won’t vote in Niger – INEC

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Niger state, Professor Sam Egwu has disclosed that there will be no Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) voting in Niger state because INEC does not recognize any IDP camp in the state.

Egwu stated this while interacting with newsmen at the Niger state INEC office in Minna.

He declared that INEC did not include Niger state among the states captured for IDP voting adding that no preparation had been done to that aspect.

“IDP voting will not take place in Niger state. We have never recorded any official IDP camp in the state, so none has been recognized so far. Those who were said to be displaced have returned back to their homes where they can vote. ”

The Resident Electoral Commissioner then said that only 6,436 out of 22,839 who requested for transfer of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) had collected their PVC calling on others to ensure they collect their PVC before the close of collection by INEC.

He added that there are over 2.39 million eligible voters in Niger state who are expected to vote on the forthcoming elections.

He declared the preparedness of INEC in the state to conduct the forthcoming elections adding that they are gradually overcoming the logistical challenges they envisage may crop up.

  • 2019 poll: PDP urges security agencies to be neutral

The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has admonished the nation’s security agencies to safeguard the unity of the country by being neutral in all their operations regarding the general elections.

The party chair said the PDP was in possession of credible intelligence that some security operatives were being hired by the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) to connive with some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to manipulate the election in their favour.

Secondus, who addressed a crowd of party supporters in Gusau, Zamfara State on Monday at the PDP presidential rally, said that there were still some good patriotic operatives who do their jobs professionally.

The party chairman advised the security operatives to be guided by the country’s constitution, saying that any bias roles from them in the coming elections could plunge the country into major crisis.

Prince Secondus said the endorsement of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar by the Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Northern Elders Forum, the Pan Niger Delta Forum and leaders of the Middle Belt Elders Forum, showed clearly where the country was heading to in the upcoming elections.

“By that endorsement, which APC is refusing to accept as coming from the people, Nigerians of all divides have spoken that the APC administration can no longer continue”, the party chair added.

Secondus assured that Atiku will not fail the nation, as, according to him, he has been tested and tried and found to be well equipped for the challenges of the country.

He added that a PDP presidency will restore all the collapsed industries in Zamfara and other states, with a view to giving jobs to the people and ensuring adequate security.

Also speaking at the rally, Atiku told the crowd that he would give them the airport they requested for, adding however that what they needed most was peace and security, which he promised to address with all seriousness.

Atiku also assured the people that he would rebuild the Malori Dam and to also reactivate industrial and agricultural activities in the state.

Prominent PDP chieftains at the rally included former Governors of Kano, Niger and Kogi States, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Babangida Aliyu and Idris Wada respectively.

A former National Security Adviser (NSA), General Mohammad Alyiu Gusau (rtd) also attended the rally.

  • Traders assure Buhari of 10 million votes

Nigerian Traders, under the auspices of Nigerian Traders For PMB, has vowed to mobilize over 10 million votes for President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming presidential election in appreciation for his achievement so far.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Prince Paul Ikonne, the Group said: “by standing by his words at all times as we find it difficult to comprehend the position of the former president concerning the wellbeing of Nigerians.”
The group sad further that “Having told Nigerians consistently how well he knows Atiku and why Nigerians should not trust Atiku, why this dance in the market place? We, therefore, urge former President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo to please speak so that we can listen.”

The group asked its members to mobilise their households, neighbours, and friends to support and vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming presidential elections in order to exceed the 10 million vote target.

The group remind “Traders that based on the achievements of PMB ranging from road infrastructure, security of life and property and more especially the Trader Moni among many others, there is need for PMB to be re-elected for the second term in order to consolidate on these achievements.

“PMB is a trader friendly president and as such traders will do everything within the law to mobilise support across board in order to exceed the 10 million votes they promised the president.”

It frowned at insinuations that the president is shielding corrupt politicians especially the recent publications on different dailies concerning Orji Kalu’s N7.2b fraud trial where the judge was quoted saying “the court would await further directives to proceed with the trial

“Nigerians know that the fight against corruption is something that the president is passionate about and thus, such directives could not have come from him. We, therefore, warn politicians not to play politics with the fight against corruption.

  • Buhari’s visit: Police deploy 1,711 officers in Niger

The Police Command in Niger had deployed 1, 711 security officers to provide adequate security before, during and after President Muhammadu Buhari’s one day official visit to the state.

The President’s official visit to Niger is billed for Saturday Jan. 19.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Dibal Yakadi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Friday.

Yakadi said that an effective operational order on how to provide security at each of the places that the President was expected to visit had since been issued to the officers deployed for that purpose.

He said that President Buhari was expected to inaugurate the Baro River Port, Presidential Lodge at Baro in Agaie Local Government Area , as well as launch the All Progressives Congress ( APC), Presidential Campaign rally at the Trade Fair Complex in the metropolis.

He said that the command had taken concrete security measures to ensure a peaceful visit.

  • 2019 poll: Knocks, kudos for Obasanjo

THE stand taken by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on next year’s general elections yesterday attracted mixed reactions from some quarters.

Renowned medical expert Dr Ore Falomo has advised Nigerians to ignore former President Olusegun Obasanjo in what he described as his campaign of calumny against President Muhammadu Buhari.

Reacting to Obasanjo’s  statement that he would not be neutral on the 2019 general elections, Falomo said the former President had become the most inconsistent leader in the country. According to him, “Obasanjo lacks credibility to influence political decisions in this country. He has no political clout to win elections even in his local government”.

Falomo, who was the physician to the winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, said Obasanjo had lobbied to become Yoruba leader but failed because of what he described as a credibility problem.

“He has the right to say anything but he can’t force his opinion on Nigerians. The 2019 elections will be decided by the people. Obasanjo has only one vote. Nigerians will decide. I think the media should stop celebrating Obasanjo. Here was a man who vowed in 2014 not to participate in partisan politics again and tore his Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) membership card publicly. Now he has returned to the same party and promised to campaign for its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, despite all what he said about him. Nigerians are not fools. Let’s wait for 2019.

“Nigerians should say no to corrupt leaders that had ruined this country. That is where Buhari  has an edge over every other  politician. He is not perfect but he’s the best we have for now.”

But Lagos PDP spokesman Gani Taofik hailed Obasanjo for making what he called a timely decision on Buhari’s administration. He said Obasanjo was known for making decisions on issues once he’s convinced.

Taofik recalled that Obasanjo that led the opposition against former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. “Now, he’s convinced that he took wrong decision by supporting Buhari in 2015; only a courageous leader can do that”, he said.

He said Obasanjo said he could not continue to support Buhari because he had no solution to Nigeria’s economic problems, security challenges, and  hunger. According to the PDP image maker, the situation in the country today is worst than what it was in 2015.

He advised Presiident Buhari to heed Obasanjo’s advice that he should not contest in 2015. If he goes ahead to contest, it is obvious that he can’t win, Taofik added.

A public affairs analyst, Malam AbdulKair Isa said Obasanjo’s criticism could not stop Buhari’s re-election. He said: “The former president, like every other Nigerian has the right to express his opinion.  Obasanjo has only one vote, just like other Nigerians. He is not in a position to decide who should contest and who should win. We are in a democracy, not military dictatorship. Nigerians will decide.”

  • 2019 poll: Buhari, APC NWC may meet over campaign, reconciliation

President Muhammadu Buhari may meet All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) this week over the campaign for next year’s poll.

The meeting may also review reconciliation efforts to pacify aggrieved members.

The President has banned public officers and agencies from contributing to his campaign.

There are indications, however, that most leaders prefer the beginning of marathon rallies from January.

Other support groups can, however, engage in various campaigns nationwide.

The NWC wrote President Buhari before his trip to Poland for an audience to firm up campaign modalities.

A presidency source said: “Mr. President will soon kick off his campaign after consultations with the party. The NWC actually wrote to seek an audience with him on some issues.

“These issues are campaign modalities, determining the kick-off date, outcome of the reconciliation efforts and how to ensure victory at the poll. Do not forget that the party gave the six reconciliation panels a two-week deadline to complete their assignment.

“The President promised to meet with the NWC after his trip to Poland. So, the session may hold this week.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “ Buhari does not want public funds diverted to his campaign. He has warned public officers, ministries, departments and agencies against contributing to his campaign.

“ The President is determined to end the practice of diverting funds meant for projects to campaign. Certainly,  the 2019 poll will be based on character and the achievements of this administration.

“Government officers and heads of agencies who plan to fiddle with public funds for campaign will have themselves to blame.”

Most APC leaders prefer January for campaign shuttles in order not to disrupt the Christmas session.

Some leaders also advised the President to lay the 2019 Budget before embarking on campaign.

The huge cost implications of campaign have made the APC to target January.

A party source said: “We cannot disclose the kick-off date for our campaign until the NWC has met with the President.

“Left to most of our leaders, they have opted for a marathon campaign strategy from January 2019. But some support groups have been organising rallies and shuttles ahead of the main campaign.

“We are in government but APC does not have resources like the slush funds available to those in the opposition.

“So, we are trying to accommodate our campaign within our constrained budget.”
