Ondo Varsity reinstates suspended ASUU leaders

The management of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State has recalled five leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who were suspended.

In a letter signed by the registrar, the management withdrew the query earlier issued to the lecturers and directed them to resume at their duty posts.

Lawyer to ASUU and the affected lecturers, Charles Titiloye, confirmed that they have been recalled, adding that his clients have told him to stay legal action against the university.

The lecturers were suspended after ASUU’s zonal meeting in the university was allegedly disrupted by the institution’s internal security.

AAUA-ASUU Chairman Dr. Busuyi Mekusi and another lecturer, Mr. Olusegun Ota Bolarinwa, were allegedly assaulted.

The Commissioner of Police ordered a probe of the incident.

Mekusi and four other ASUU members were suspended by the university.

Last month, Titiloye served a statutory one month pre-action notice on AAUA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Femi Mimiko on the lecturers’ intention to challenge their suspension at the Industrial Court.

The one month notice expired last week.

The lecturers resumed work on Monday.

    Ondo PDP faults delegates’ list

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State yesterday faulted the government’s list to the national conference.

It vowed to win the by-election in Ilaje/Eseodo fixed for April 5.

At a reconciliation meeting in Akure, PDP said the nomination of political office holders as delegates does not represent majority of the people.

It said the delegates – Vice-Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Prof. Femi Mimiko; Commissioner for Adult and Vocational Education Remi Olatubora; Commissioner for Environment Sola Ebiseeni and Commissioner for Women Affairs Mrs. Yemi Mamud – were not the state’s best.

The PDP meeting was attended by Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim; Prof. Olu Agbi; Mr. Ife Adedipe (SAN); Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN); Chief Soji Adesugba; Princess Oladunni Odu; Mr. Ayo Ifayefunmi; Mr. Ebenezer Alabi; Dr. Tayo Dairo and Mrs. Janet Febisola Adeyemi, among others.

It praised President Goodluck Jonathan for setting up the national conference, but said: “Having given a critical overview to the list from Ondo State, we observed that many of them are political office holders, who do not represent opinion leaders, ethnic groups, political or geographical balances of the people of Ondo State.”

PDP urged the President to redress the “imbalance”, so the names of “persons with proven integrity” can be put on the list.

On the reconciliation of aggrieved PDP members, Ibrahim said if all state chapters in the Southwest reconcile aggrieved members, the party would have a better chance of winning back the Southwest.

He said: “Do not joke with the PDP’s desire. When PDP says it is going to win an election, you should take it serious.”

On the party’s prospects in next year’s elections, Ibrahim said: “I have never seen an incumbent in a developing country lose an election. I do not know how they do it, but they always win.”

Fayefunmi said: “This is the final reconciliation meeting of PDP leaders in Ondo State. Hitherto, there were PDP factions, but we have buried our hatchet and now have one PDP in Ondo State. We have considered a the issues affecting our party’s growth. One of them is the national conference. As a party, we have taken a position on the list from Ondo State.

“We urge the President to to redress this imbalance and include persons of proven integrity and accountability from Ondo State.

“We have taken a look at the by-election in Ilaje/Ese-Odo. The PDP will work hard to win thet election. That is one of our strongholds. Without rigging, which we will not allow, we will win.”

Robbers dismantle ATM at Ondo varsity

Armed robbers dismantled yesterday an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at a new generation bank inside Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) campus, Ondo State and stole an undisclosed amount.

It was learnt that the bandits carried out their operation between 1am and 3am at the ATM opposite Olusegun Obasanjo Multipurpose Hall.

Sources said five gunmen, armed with two AK 47 rifles, entered the campus through a pedestrian gate at the southern part of the university.

The Nation learnt that when the hoodlums got to where the ATM is located, they met two AAUA security guards and three sheriff deputies and tied them.

It was gathered that the robbers entered the ATM room after breaking the door with electrical metal cutting tools.

According to a source, the robbers attempted to dismantle an ATM at one of the old generation banks.

A student, who preferred anonymity, said: “We discovered that they attempted to open the ATM of an old generation bank when we got to the place this morning.

“I think they could not dismantle the ATM because it was already dawn and they were afraid of being attacked by students.”

The management of the university, led by Prof. Femi Mimiko, has visited the scene of the incident.

Confirming the robbery, police spokesman Wole Ogodo said nobody has been arrested.

He said the robbers succeeded at the new generation bank because there was no anti-robbery alarm, but failed at the old generation bank because it had a strong security door.

According to him, police were making efforts to arrest the robbers.

    ASUU slams Ondo Varsity VC

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has flayed the management of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, for the attack on its members by the institution’s internal security men, known as “Sheriff Deputies.”

It backed the boycott of lectures by AAUA lecturers, saying the institution’s authorities, led by the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof. Femi Mimiko, had never hidden its hatred for labour unions.

An ASUU Zonal meeting was allegedly disrupted at AAUA last week Monday by the university’s security men.

Speaking with reporters in Akure, ASUU National President Dr. Nasir Fagge said Mimiko’s action showed that he does not tolerate opposition.

Faggae, who was accompanied by 14 ASUU branch chairmen, alleged that the VC, on many occasions, condemned ASUU’s activities and aims to ban unionism in AAUA.

ASUU levelled 18 infractions against the VC, including the ban of ASUU vehicles in the university; refusal to pay the five-month outstanding salary of ASUU members in disregard of the non-victimisation clause in the resolutions reached on the suspension of the July-December, 2013 strike; arbitrary disengagement of ASUU members on the grounds of “reorganisation”; introduction of strange criteria for promotion being applied retroactively to ensure that only those who enjoyed his alleged blessing could scale promotion hurdles to the next cadre; irregular appointments of professors without the existence of Appointment and Promotion Committee, among others.

Faggae said: “The story of the assault of January 27 deserves special mention in view of the lies that followed. On that fateful day, a delegation of ASUU-NEC, led by the Vice-President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, visited the branch to address its congress.

“The first batch of the delegation got there in two union vehicles belonging to the union’s branches in the University of Ibadan (UI) and the Benue State University around 8:15am. These two vehicles were checked in and given the pass tallies. The team proceeded to the union’s secretariat, where members of the executive committee were waiting to receive them.

“The delegation proceeded with the meeting. About an hour later, a team of the university’s internal security men, called Sheriff Deputies, swooped on the secretariat and deflated the tyres of the two vehicles that brought the visiting team.

“Their reason was that the ASUU team came into the university without authorisation. They claimed that there was a law forbidding ASUU vehicles from entering the campus. ASUU demanded that the security men produce evidence of the so-called law, but some of the Sheriff Deputies pounced on the union’s branch chairperson, Dr. Busuyi Mekusi, and former Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker Bolarinwa and molested them.

“The acting chief security officer later came to the ASUU Secretariat to apologise for the overzealous act of the Sherriff Deputies, but he acknowledged that there was a directive by the AAUA management not to allow ASUU vehicles from other branches into the campus.”

However, the Registrar, Mr. R.B Olotu, said the visiting ASUU members refused to submit themselves for routine security checks and attacked the security men.
