  • AAUA gets 57 boxes of books

    The Ondo State Association in Atlanta (OSAA), United States, has donated 57 boxes of books to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

    The books were handed over to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Femi Mimiko by the representative and Secretary General of OSAA, Mr. Sola Olorunsola at the AAUA Council Chamber, Wednesday last week.

    Mimiko, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, appreciated the donor describing books as “the most essential resources in any university”.

    He thanked the University Advancement Office, UAO, under its Acting Director, Prof. Francis Oyebade, for making efforts to ensure the realisation of its mandate.

    Ajayi called on well-meaning Nigerians to complement government’s funding effort in education.

    “This is the type of what we need in this country to grow our education sector. Funding of education should not be left for government only,” he said.

    Earlier in his address, Prof. Oyebade reiterated the core mandate of the Advancement office, which included facilitating global support, especially, in terms of fund raising, building relationship, institutional marketing, communication networking, partnership with industries and endowment administration.

     

    As requested by the OSAA, the UAO Ag. Director listed the pressing needs of the university to include, endowment of professorial chairs, scholarships for indigent students, an entrepreneurship centre and a modern university library.

     

  • AAUA starts Senate Building

    The Site Engineer of the Adekunle Ajasin University’s five-storey Senate Building, Kolapo Fasola, has assured that the October this year delivery date of the project is still on course.

    Fasola, said 70 per cent of the work had been done.

    He said: “Our schedule to deliver this project in October this year is still on course. Already, the work done is about 70 per cent.”

    However, while acknowledging that funds for the project have been prompt, Fasola envisaged slight extension of delivery date, if the newly proposed additional sixth floor to the West and North wings of building is approved. He said the Roof Tile Beam of the South and East wings have been completed.

    He added: “No section of the whole work is delaying another. The ground floor tiles have been completed. Tilers are on the third floor. Burglaries are almost completed and every other works are going on simultaneously. If there is no additional floor, we are still in line of programme of work.”

    It will be recalled that the Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. Femi Mimiko, had, in April last year, emphasised the need for the company handling the project, Charvet Nig. Ltd., not only to deliver standard Senate Building to the university, but also on record time.

    The VC said: “We can’t afford to have anything that is below what we referred to as building standard.

    We don’t see any reason why our job should be delayed or delivered below top-form quality.”

    The construction of the five-storey edifice started in March last year.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Prof Femi Mimiko, has praised the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for supporting infrastructural development in tertiary institutions.

    Mimiko spoke when a two-man delegation from the agency visited the university for project assessment.

    The VC, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, praised the agency for its doggedness and commitment in ensuring that funds are disbursed and used for the development of Tertiary institutions.

    He noted that the university has been judicious in utilising TETFund grants, assuring the visitors it will continue doing so.

    The assessed projects included a 300-capacity twin-lecture theatre, 30-classroom Quadrangle and a science laboratory building.

    Varsity welcomes freshers

    The management of the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Akungba-Akoko, has held a three-day orientation for freshers. The event was held in the multipurpose hall.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Femi Mimiko, congratulated the freshers and urged them to jealously guard their admission.

    The Dean of Students’ Affairs (DSA), Prof Oluyemisi Adebowale, said the aim of the programme was to familiarise the students with the rules and regulations of the institution. She urged the students to see their admission as an opportunity to excel and prepare themselves adequately for life after graduation.

    She warned them to shun cultism, examination malpractices and other conducts that may endanger their studentship.

    The Bursar, Mr O. T. Akinterinwa, enlightened the students on some of the financial regulations of the institution, method of payment of tuition fee and the implications of non-adherence to payment deadlines. The Librarian, Mr W.A. Akinfolarin, on the other hand, explained the significance of the use of library to their academic excellence.

    Educating the students on academic programmes, the Deputy Registrar, Mr M.S. Ayeerun, enlightened them on how best to achieve academic excellence. The Director of the University Health Centre, Dr. E.I. Medunoye, told the students to always visit the centre whenever they have medical issues.

    On the last day of the programme, the students were taken on an excursion to Idanre Hills.

    Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE, one of the students, Blessing Bademosi, 100-Level Mass Communication, praised the management for the orientation.

    Ten bag First Class as varsity graduates 5,503

    Ten students have bagged First class degrees at the fourth convocation of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

    No fewer than 5,503 students participated in the convocation held for the 2010 and 2011 sets. Four persons were conferred with honorary degrees.

    The convocation took off with a lecture delivered in Yoruba by the renowned author, Prof Akinwunmi Ishola. The lecture was held in the expansive multipurpose hall.

    In his address, the institution’s Visitor, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State described beneficiaries of the honorary degrees as worthy citizens of the country.

    He promised the First Class graduates immediate employment in the civil service.

    On the achievements of his administration, Mimiko said: “As a government, we have taken the challenge of reviewing our educational policies and instituting programmes with a view to rescuing our society from its comatose state. We also address unemployment, extreme poverty, crime and insecurity challenges.”

    He praised the school’s management for constantly reviewing its curriculum and establishing academic centres to produce self-reliant graduates that would meet the needs of the society. He urged the school to ensure that sustainable structures were put in place to fasten the realisation of a 21st century university.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Femi Mimiko, said the ceremony was an opportunity to appraise how far the university has kept faith with its mission and vision.

    “The scheme has also helped us to stay focused, improve on our operations and delivery capacity in all respects and enable us to attract positive attention in the Nigerian educational landscape. The convocation is aimed at delivering sustainable progress even within the context of very difficult global environmental situation,” he added.

    He said his administration would deepen the integrity of academic programmes, sharpen the effectiveness of internal operations and expand the parameters of the students support services and infrastructural landscape.He said: “We seek to hone the capacity of our staff, deepen our engagement with society and broaden the reach and breadth of our commitment to internationalisation with a view to making our university more relevant and competitive. All these we did in the context of a well-calibrated institutional reform programme, which focused on attainment of global best practices in higher education administration.”

    The highpoint of the ceremony was the conferment of degrees on the graduands and the presentation of cash prizes ranging from N10,000 to N100,000 to the best among the students.

    Retired Bishop of Akure Bolanle Gbonigi was honoured with the university’s Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) for being a fearless crusader of justice, public accountability and social development.

    Other beneficiaries are Prof Toyin Falola, Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) for his generosity to the institution, and Maj-Gen Olufemi Olutoye (rtd), Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for his commitment to the upliftment of Nigerian communities.

    Before the ceremony, Mimiko commissioned six projects and pledged more support for the institution. The projects are the University Staff School, a guest house, gymnasium, the Vice-Chancellor’s lodge, a 500-capacity lecture theatre, a 300-capacity twin lecture theatre, U-block comprising five classrooms among others.

    The governor said: “The interesting thing about your projects here is that they are delivered on schedule and the quality of work done is very impressive. For us as government, the investment we are making in this university is based on our fundamental belief that human capital is the most important variable in all endeavours.”

    With a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.69, Mr Adu Oluwatayo, emerged the overall best graduating student. He graduated from Education Management in 2009. Also, Modupe Ogunleye emerged the best graduating student in 2010 with a CGPA of 4.62.

    AAUA, others for FG’s PC scheme

    The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) has been selected by the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology as one of the 12 pilot universities to benefit from the Personal Computer Ownership Scheme (PCOS).

    The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Rotimi Ajayi, said one state and one Federal university were selected from each of the six geo-political zones of the country.AAUA and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were selected from the Southwest. The scheme, which allows a student to own a laptop computer with a payment duration of 12 to 18 months, will accommodate only 100 to 300 level students.

    A statement by the university’s Chairman, PCOS Committee, Mrs. R.T. Olotua, enjoined eligible students to contact her office at the Information Communication and Technology Application Centre, ICTAC, and the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof Oluyemisi Adebowale, for more information.
