  • Police IRT not disbanded, am still in charge, says Kyari

The Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) has not been disbanded, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)  in charge of the unit, Abba Kyari, has said.

Kyari told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday that the clarification became necessary in view of IRT’s reported disbandment in the social media.

He said that IRT was not among police formations recently disbanded by the Acting Inspector General of Police (I-G), Mohammed Adamu.

He said reports that one DCP Ben Okolo took over as new IRT commander was false, saying that he is still in charge.

According to Kyari, DCP Ben Okolo was sent to IRT as head of the Routine Audit Team to audit arms, exhibits, operational vehicles, suspects etc.
“Such audit was not only applicable to IRT, but likewise many other senior officers were sent to other police departments as heads of routine audit teams.

“Ignore the fake news going round. IRT has not been disbanded as clearly shown in the IGP’s speech and other IGP signals that followed,” he said.

NAN reports that the new IGP had, during his maiden meeting with commissioners of police in Abuja, ordered the decentralisation of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

With the decentralisation, commissioners of police in each state have assumed full command and control of all SARS operation in their various commands.
The IGP also announced the disbandment of the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) and Special Tactical Squad (STS), and other investigation teams.
NAN further reports that IRT had been a nightmare to kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminals, since inception. (NAN)

  • Presidency dismisses corruption allegations against Abba Kyari

The Presidency has frowned at what it described as improbable and outlandish publication by a national daily on Saturday alleging corruption against the Chief of Staff to the president, Malam Abba Kyari.

The publication alleged that Kyari collected N29 million bribe from a contractor.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, condemned the publication in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

Shehu explained that Kyari did not have any private meetings with the person making those allegations.

The statement read: “Presidency takes strong offence to the improbable and outlandish publication by national daily today (Saturday – Sept. 8) in a dig at presidential aide Abba Kyari who was alleged to have collected a 29 million naira bribe for the awarding of a contract.

“We wish to state with full authority that the allegation is wrong and the Chief of Staff did not have any private meetings with the person making those allegations.

“What is even more surprising is the decision by the newspaper to run the cooked up lies despite obvious loopholes in the story, such as the Bureau of Public Procurement’s denial that a major source for the story was a member of their staff.

“With a slew of crucial elections ahead, some politicians and their media agents appear to be working together to build pressure on the Buhari administration by wielding non-existent scandals against it,’’ he said.

The presidential spokesman also noted that the supply of 15 Hilux vehicles for the Presidency was an unlikely contract to have been awarded, as it did not exist anywhere in the 2016 and 2017 budgets.
“Checking the Appropriation for 2016 and 2017, that request is not even there.

How could Abba Kyari have asked for money to award a contract that did not exist anywhere at all?,’’ he said.

Shehu added that the amount allegedly given in bribe was also suspicious, as the office of the presidential aide had been known in the past to receive monthly Imprest of N200 million and above with no one expected to give account.

“It was only since Abba Kyari occupied that position that things changed.

“In blunt terms, it is difficult to make a case of N29 million bribery against an official who spurned a monthly payment of N200 million to his office, money for which he didn’t need to account to anyone,’’ he said.

He therefore cautioned against the media’s haste to publish unverified accusations against government officials simply for the sensationalism value without doing the due diligence required of them by their profession.

The presidential spokesman observed that the newspaper was notified of “the various falsehoods contained in the allegations but still went ahead to publish the weak accusations.

“They should be prepared to face Abba Kyari in court’’. (NAN)

  • Buhari has done well in Delta State more than Jonathan – Emerhor

A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Olorogun Otega Emerhor on Wednesday night declared that President Muhammadu Buhari has done well in Delta State more than former President Goodluck Jonathan, who hails from the zone.

He spoke with State House correspondents after meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari.

On what are the chances of Buhari in the South South, Emerhor said, “In 2015, we had President Jonathan who is from the south south, that created an emotional issue but we have seen now that even when Jonathan was in power, he did not do for Delta what President Buhari has done for us.

“The Ogoni cleaning exercise that is going on there is one of the major thing we can count on. The east west road is being completely rehabilitated and that did not happen when one of our own sons was the President.

“So, we are very confident that the south south this time around wants to belong to the center and that is why we are going to be able to deliver the President there.” he added

Giving more reasons why the South South will support Buhari, he said that the Buhari’s administration has reactivated the amnesty programme; the Maritime University in the Ijaw-Ishekiri side of Delta is now functioning.

He went on: “And he has done a lot for us in Delta. He has empowered a lot of our people in Delta.

“We have the Minister of State Petroleum and the Minister of Transportation from South-South, the N-Power programme is working so all these have created the enabling environment for us to deliver the President in 2019.” he said

Optimistic that the APC can take over the reins of leadership in Delta State from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he said that the current Governor off the State has not done enough thus, clearing the coast for the APC to take over.

“Let me tell you, we are so fortunate that the Governor of Delta Sate, who is a PDP man, is not doing anything. Delta has a lot of resources and the expectation is that the State should be doing better than Edo State for example, which is our neighbour but the APC Governor in Edo is doing so well; even Willie Obiano in Anambra that doesn’t having anything is doing so well.

“So it’s so obvious that the finances of Delta State are not being applied and everyone in Delta is now convinced that APC must takeover because they produce performing Governors,” he stated.

Commenting on alleged divisions in the APC in Delta State, he said the issue was not peculiar to Delta State.

“The issue of congresses and division did not happen only in Delta. It happened across the country but this is the period of reconciliation. There is a group that did not work with the majority of the people in Delta; we formed a unity group in Delta that had so many Governorship aspirants and leaders working together.

“But as you know, the Ogboru and Omo-Agege group put their own governorship aspiration ahead and decided to work separately but the move we are making is to bring everybody together, provide a level playing field so that all the Governorship aspirants will work together.

“But the great objective we have is how to deliver the President in Delta State 2019. That is our priority and the ground is ripe for us to take over that State and deliver 2 million votes for President Buhari in 2019,” he said.
