    • Party asks for resignation letter

The factional Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Mas’ud Eljibril, has urged Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to formally notify the “legally recognised” NNPP in writing before he joins the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court ruled last year that the faction, which uses a basket with fruits as its logo and is chaired in the state by Senator Eljibril, is the authentic NNPP.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Kano, Eljibril presented several court judgments to buttress his position.

The factional chairman described his faction as the authentic NNPP, and Governor Yusuf as a bona fide member of his faction.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a bona fide member of the NNPP that has a basket with fruits as its logo.

“Secondly, we are calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect the judgments of all the courts that were delivered last year on this issue.

“Lastly, I want to reaffirm that Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a member of the NNPP, and we owe him respect. But if he wants to leave, he has the legal right to leave, but he has to formally tender his resignation to the party, which we are yet to receive formally.

“We are still waiting for his formal resignation from our party. To be a member of any political party is an individual decision.”

If he decides to leave the party, it’s his choice, but he has to do that according to the rules and regulations to the party,” Eljibril stated.

The factional NNPP urged the INEC to also respect the court rulings.

The party threatens that: “Ignoring this requirement will have future legal consequences, especially if a Supreme Court decision later confirms this legitimacy.”

The rival NNPP faction that uses books as its logo, on the other hand, is facing its internal battle that has led to the emergence of two state chairmen.

As a consequence of the deepening crisis over Governor Yusuf’s defection to APC, the former NNPP Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa –a pro-Kwankwaso was sacked at the prompting of the governor, who swiftly appointed Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as replacement.

Stage set for Kano Governor Yusuf’s defection to APC

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf will dump the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, a member of the state executive council confirmed to The Nation on Sunday.

It was learnt last night that the Kano chapter of the APC was agog to welcome the governor, who has concluded  all forms of consultations with the electorate and stakeholders.

The defection date was initially fixed for January 5 but was shifted to give room for further consultation, to get the buy-in of more stakeholders, particularly the Kano National Assembly lawmakers, to the move.

“Yes, of course, the governor is joining APC tomorrow (Monday) with all his NNPP supporters,” our source, a commissioner said.

Yusuf’s predecessor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who was the immediate-past National Chairman of the APC, returned yesterday to Nigeria from Dubai to be part of the reception for the the governor.

Ganduje and the State Chairman of the APC Abdullahi Abbas had on behalf of other members of the power bloc within the Kano chapter of the party, sent an official invite to Yusuf, assuring him of maximum cooperation.

Governor Yusuf, who was elected on the platform of Kwankwaso’s NNPP, has decided to migrate to the ruling APC in order to improve on his efforts to develop the state.

However, NNPP factional leader Rabiu Kwankwaso, is kicking against the move, insisting that the governor should relinquish his position if he must defect.

The disagreement between Yusuf and his benefactor has divided the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

The source said Yusuf will be defecting with all council chairmen in the state and all NNPP members in the House of Assembly.

Yusuf, it was learnt, feels safer in the APC because of the unresolved leadership crises and ongoing court cases rocking the NNPP.

“That could jeopardise his mandate, among other reasons,” the source said.

Yusuf issues executive order prohibiting independent Hisbah in Kano

The Kano State Government has issued an Executive Order prohibiting the formation and operation of a group described as “Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi,” declaring it illegal and a threat to public order.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who gave the announcement, said the order was signed by Governor Abba Yusuf.

Yusuf said he issued the order in exercise of his constitutional powers to maintain public peace and ensure enforcement of state laws, pursuant to section 5(2) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

According to him, the Kano State Hisbah Board Law recognises only the Hisbah Board as the sole institution mandated to coordinate Hisbah-related activities in the state.

“The government has observed with concern that certain individuals and groups are recruiting, mobilising and organising persons into a body called ‘Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi’ without lawful authority,” he said.

According to Waiya the Executive Order declares such activities illegal, noting that the creation of a parallel Hisbah structure could undermine the functions of the legally established Hisbah Board and disturb public peace.

He explained that the order explicitly prohibits any person or group from recruiting, assembling, training or deploying persons for the purpose of operating a parallel Hisbah or similar enforcement outfit.

“The formation, establishment or promotion of any association or organisation under the name ‘Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi’, or any similar description, is unlawful and void,” the commissioner said.

He added that the order affirms the Kano State Hisbah Board as the only recognised body authorised to perform Hisbah functions, and warns that impersonating its authority, uniform or symbol is prohibited.

Waiya the governor has also directed the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other security agencies to investigate the organisers and sponsors of the group, halt their activities, and prevent any breach of peace arising from the unlawful formation.

The Executive Order further notifies members of the public that participation in or support for the group amounts to a violation of state laws.

Yusuf plans drones, enhanced surveillance to curb bandit attacks in Kano

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, on Wednesday announced plans to procure drones and other logistical support to strengthen surveillance and rapid response efforts along the border areas between Kano and Katsina States.

Yusuf made the disclosure while assessing the preparedness of the Joint Task Force (JTF) at their bases in Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas following recent bandit attacks.

Reports indicate that 10 people were kidnapped in Shanono and five in Tsanyawa, with a woman feared killed.

The governor urged residents in the affected communities to provide the JTF with relevant information on bandits’ movements.

He also noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu responded positively to his request for support during a recent meeting.

Governor Yusuf directed the JTF to intensify efforts to ensure the safe release of the kidnapped residents from both Tsanyawa and Shanono communities.

He said, “We are aware that they have been attacking innocent communities, especially here in Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas. Many innocent lives were taken away, and many innocent people were also sent to the bush.

“I assure you that by God’s Grace, those that were kidnapped will be brought back to their families.

“We are here to assess the situation as far as this insecurity is concerned and to rub minds with you as well as to motivate you to put in your best.”

The governor, in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, added: “This type of insecurity in Kano State is something new; it is something alien that has just been observed in the state, and the government is doing its best to address the situation with the cooperation of security agencies.”

Yusuf assured the personnel that the administration would do provide for their welfare.

The governor condoled with families whose relatives were kidnapped and assured them of the victims’ freedom.

  • Insecurity in Kano: Wake up Governor Abba Yusuf

Insecurity in Kano: Wake up Governor Abba Yusuf

Sir: Kano, the historic heart of the North, is bleeding. Villages are emptying; people are terrified; and the state government remains silent. When citizens cannot move freely within their own state, and when parents warn their children to stay away from home for their own safety, we have crossed a dangerous line.

Kano is already battling the menace of fadan daba (thuggery). Unfortunately, the state government appears helpless. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf—this is the time to wake from your slumber before it is too late.

Recent attacks in Biresawa and Tsundu in Tsanyawa Local Government, along with the recurring horrors in Shanono, have exposed the failures of the present administration. Bandits now operate with impunity between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. abducting women, rustling livestock, and traumatizing entire communities. Villagers reportedly alerted authorities ahead of some attacks, yet their cries for help went unanswered.

The state government is silent; state owned media provides no direction; and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf—has shown no visible leadership. The police and military are trying their best, but they are fighting a war without a general. Security is not a political game; it is a matter of life and death. Sadly, the current administration is failing its most basic duty.

We must remember the past. Under former governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano remained relatively secure while neighbouring states were ravaged by banditry. CCTV cameras monitored the metropolis.

The Falgore Forest was cleared in collaboration with the federal government. Federal and state security agencies worked closely to repel threats, including attempted Boko Haram incursions.

I recently visited Falgore in Doguwa Local Government down to Riruwai, and people openly praised Ganduje for the security measures he put in place. Leadership like that inspired confidence and made Kano safer.

The blueprint for a secure Kano already exists; it only requires the political will to implement it. Silence and inaction are recipes for disaster, risking the creation of a generation of desperate, unemployed youth vulnerable to criminal recruitment. Governor Yusuf bears ultimate responsibility.

He must act now: coordinate decisively with federal security agencies, empower and fund local community watch groups, and lead from the front to reassure a terrified populace.

Kano is more than a state—it is the heartbeat of northern Nigeria. If Kano collapses, the entire region will suffer. Political differences must end where the safety of our people begins.

The time for urgent, united, and decisive action is now. Kano is bleeding, and the responsibility to stop it rests squarely on Governor Yusuf’s shoulders. His legacy will be defined by how he responds in this moment of crisis.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Augustine Alegeh (SAN) and a lawyer Professor, Sebastine Hon (SAN) haved advocated the need for leaders to prioritise citizens’ welfare in the developmental efforts of governments at all levels.

Governor Yusuf, Alegeh and Hon said while it was necessary for governments to deploy state’s resources for the development of physical infrastructure, good leaders should be able to combine such requirement with meeting citizens’ immediate needs.

They spoke in Abuja on Saturday night at this year’s edition of The Creed magazine’s Annual Dinner and Awards, held under the theme: “Law & Society: Leadership, Infrastructural Development, Pursuit of Good Governance.”

Governor Yusuf, who was named the Governor of the year, commended those behind the award, particularly the magazine’s Publisher/Editor-In-Chief, John Austin Unachukwu for providing such a platform that recognises those making positive impacts in the society.

Represented by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), the Kano governor highlighted his administration’s achievements in all sectors and promised to do more.

He said noted that the theme of the event “mirrors the central philosophy guiding our administration – that leadership must be responsible, development must be people-centered, and governance must be transparent and just.

“In every society, the law serves as the foundation upon which peace, order, and development are built. When law functions effectively and fairly, society thrives; when law is weakened, every other sector suffers.

“As leaders, we are constantly reminded that governance must be anchored on justice, fairness, and accountability. The law defines our limitations, guides our responsibilities, and ensures that government remains a servant of the people,” he said.

Governor Yusuf added: “In the last few years, we have made deliberate efforts to strengthen the justice sector because a society that seeks development must first entrench justice.

“Through the Ministry of Justice, we initiated wide-ranging reforms to ensure that justice is accessible to all citizens regardless of status, income level, or background.

“We recognised that prolonged detentions, delayed trials, and poor access to legal representation weaken public trust and undermine the rule of law.

“That is why the urgent review of prolonged detention in custodial centres was launched, an intervention that revealed deeply troubling cases of inmates who had spent years behind bars without trial, without case files, and sometimes without legal representation,” Governor Yusuf said.

Represented by Paul Ogbole (SAN), Alegeh, who was the Chairman of the event, commended the efforts of The Creed magazine, which he said, have been to document the nation’s development in the areas of legal and political developments, while emphasising people centred leadership and policy formulation.

Alegeh hailed the publisher’s initiative of utilising his knowledges legal and journalism “as instruments for national cohesion and development by focusing on the deployment of law and political powers for the benefit of the people.”

Hon, who was the keynote speaker, said it was incumbent on any responsible government to apply the law to develop critical infrastructure to positively impact the lives of its people, particularly at the grass roots.

The Law Professor, who commended the Kano State Governor for his impact in the area of infrastructure development, cautioned the need for physical infrastructure development should be combined the welfare of the people.

He said: “Even if you build all the roads, the bridges, the skyscrapers and all similar physical structures and your citizens are hungry, then, there could be some revolts.

“So, leaders and rulers should be careful in the way they apply public resources. When you build all the physical infrastructure, let the people also have food on their tables,” Hon said.

Unachukwu explained that the choice of the Kano State governor as the Governor of the Year, was because of his administration’s efforts in the areas of social and infrastructural developments in his state.

He said: “The dinner and awards is to recognise and appreciate people, who have made tremendous contributions to the socio-economic and political development of Nigeria.”
