    Ahmed: law review’ll protect stakeholders

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday said the proposed amendment to the state’s Education Law, 2006, would rectify perceived ambiguities and protect the interest of all stakeholders.

Ahmed spoke while hosting members of the NASFAT Society at the Government House in Ilorin, the state capital.

He said the government would review requests to relinquish or retain ownership of grant-aided schools when the law is passed.

The governor urged residents not to give the proposed amendment “any religious coloration”, saying a review of the Education Law was necessary in view of current realities.

He hailed NASFAT for presenting its position through dialogue, advising residents to continue to live together in peace.

NASFAT State Chairman Bashir Lawal alleged that the controversy over the return of schools to their original owners was political.

Traditional rulers in Kwara North Senatorial Zone have endorsed Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for a second term.

The traditional rulers, led by the Etsu Patigi and Vice-Chairman of the State Traditional Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar, gave the endorsement at a congratulatory visit to the governor on his awards, both at home and in France.

Umar said the governor had touched the lives of the people of Kwara North Ahmed in numerous ways, especially health care delivery, education and youth empowerment.

He thanked the governor for appointing an appreciable number of people from the senatorial district into his administration. The monarchs prayed for the governor’s success in the 2015 elections.

Ahmed thanked them for their support, pledging to fix the Kishi-Kaiama and Ilesha Baruba-Gwanara roads.

    •Saraki, APC knock Suleiman

Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and National Planning Minister Abubakar Suleiman have disagreed on the minimum wage in the state.

Addressing some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters yesterday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, Suleiman said Kwara civil servants were the least paid.

He said: “It is despicable and unthinkable that great as this state is, its civil servants remain the least paid in the country.

“The civil servants are being gradually pauperised. People must ask questions. There must be an end to this and the time to do that is now.  An individual must not hold the key to our political survival. What we see here are not new roads but the rehabilitation of old ones, which ordinarily should be fixed by the local governments. Is it not a cause for worry that N2 billion was used to rehabilitate our General Hospital in Ilorin? What then will it cost us to construct new ones? Kwarans ask questions about how you are being governed.

“Today, Kwarans are wiser and our mothers, fathers and even the youths are done with the politics of eba, amala and a pittance. They are ready to take their destinies in their hands. It is not about money but our future.” he added.

Ahmed, through his media aide, Dr Muideen Akorede, said: “We expect a minister to be more circumspect and factual in his claims against the Ahmed administration. What is the basis of this clearly fallacious claim that our workers are the least paid? Kwara was among the first to pay workers the minimum wage.

“Despite the huge drop in the FAAC allocations, which we assume the minister is aware of, Kwara State is one of the few states with a prompt pay day. This feat is unlike the situation in several PDP-controlled states, which are owing workers salary for several months.

“We urge the minister to stop playing politics with the welfare of Kwara workers, who have cast their lot with the worker-friendly Ahmed administration, and focus on making an impact in his ministry.

“On hospitals, it makes more sense for the state government to fix existing structures before establishing new ones. We invite the minister to visit the re-modelled Ilorin General hospital and see how it has been transformed into a first-class facility before questioning the cost.

“We are also bewildered that the minister questions the administration’s rehabilitation of existing roads, including those abandoned by the Federal Government. Where was Suleiman when the Ahmed administration revamped over 40 rural roads in partnership with local governments? Or when the state government intervened on Federal roads, such as Zango/Oyun Bridge Road, Fate Road, Ilorin and parts of the Ajase-Ipo/Erin Road?

“We urge the minister to back his criticism with data, instead of indulging in unsubstantiated claims in the name of politicking.”

Kwara All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Ishola Balogun-Fulani and Senator Bukola Saraki also lashed Suleiman for describing the state as a potential hotbed for Boko Haram.

Saraki said: “It was a very irresponsible statement from the minister and he should withdraw it.”

Balogun-Fulani said: “The minister is an Abuja politician. He doesn’t know we have gainfully employed youths in Kwara. The government has empowered youths. The statement emanates from somebody who does not know that the state is known for harmonious co-existence. Kwara is the most peaceful state in Nigeria.”

I wonder why he was chosen as a minister since he is not on ground in the state.

“Both Muslims and Christians cohabit peacefully in Kwara as they believe in God. Presumably, seeing that the state is peaceful, the minister plans to start using people to disrupt the peace. Possibly he has a different agenda for the state, but we will not allow him to succeed.”

Saraki, others endorse Ahmed for second term

FORMER governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, and other stakeholders have endorsed Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for a second term in office.

This lay to rest months of speculations and anxiety that the Senate Committee Chairman on Ecology and Environment might not consider his godson for another term in office.

The endorsement was the outcome of a crucial meeting at Government Reserved Area (GRA) Ilorin home of Senator Saraki on Thursday night.

The general consensus at the meeting was that Governor Ahmed stood out for ensuring peace and harmony within the party during his first tenure.

Though they admitted there are challenges, the stakeholders stated it was better to endorse Ahmed for a second term in office due to his loyalty to the party, the people and his humility.

A former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Alhaji Yusuf Aiyedun, after the opening formalities, specially requested the support of other stakeholders from Kwara North and Kwara Central to grant Kwara South the opportunity to produce the state governor for a second term.

Alhaji Aiyedu, who is from the same Kwara South senatorial district with the governor, was said to have hinged the request on the performances of Ahmed and the need to deepen the legacy of continuity and equity.

The Kwara central senatorial chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Adesina, according to a source, also aligned with the request of his counterpart from the south

The source quoted Alhaji Adesina to have said: “Governor Ahmed has shown unequalled humility and loyalty to the party structure, leadership and the people of the state despite his gubernatorial position.

“I, however, advise the governor to ensure wider spread of dividends of democracy across the board.”

A party elder from Kwara North, Senator Ahmed, said the governor has achieved a lot despite the shortfall in revenue.

He, however, advised the governor to consider other zones for political patronage.

The APC woman leader, Sarah Adebayo, on behalf of the women folk endorsed the second term bid with a request that effort should be made to ensure 35 percent affirmative action.

Saraki, who is the APC leader in the state, it was gathered, marvelled at the 100 percent loyalty of the governor, which makes him deserve another term in office.

Referring to Governor Ahmed’s decision to defect with him to APC, Saraki hailed him for remaining steadfast despite serious pressure to turn back.

He added that Kwara is the only state in the country which has remained peaceful despite a transition.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Ilorin, the state capital, on his decision, Saraki said: “In my own view, I believe that he has performed. He has provided leadership.

“He has built up from where we left. He has been able to bring significant development despite the paucity of funds in the state.

“He has shown responsibility and we believe that leaves him in that direction for another four years for him will be good for the state.”

Ahmed upgrades 70 traditional stools in Kwara

Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has approved the grading and upgrading of 70 traditional stools in the state.

The state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Alhaji Abdullahi S. Umar, who announced government’s decision in a statement, added that the grading and upgrading of the monarchs was with immediate effect.

The upgraded stools include 17 Third Class monarchs moving to second class category, while 22 erstwhile 4th Class were moved to Third Class, the statement added.

The new second class stools are Eruku, Obbo-Aiyegunle, Obbo-Ile, Arandun, Aran-Orin, Ora and Omupo. Others are Oro-Ago, Babanla, Idofian, Ijara Isin, Iwo Isin, Aiyedun, Ojoku, Ijagbo, Ipee and Ikotun.

Those in the new third class category include Koro, Isare Opin, Agbonda, Omido, Ilala, Igbonla, Elerinjare, Amoyo, Owode Ofaro, Oke-Oyan, Agbeku, Labaka Shagbe, Yaru, Owa Onire, Oke-Aba, Oke-Onigbin, Ala-Isin, Iwo-Oduore, Idofin Odo-Ashe and Idofin-Igbana all in Kwara South senatorial district.

Meanwhile, some communities in Ekan Meje and Odo-Owa in Oke-Ero local council have thrown their weight behind the second term ambition of Governor Ahmed.

The communities urged the governor not to accede to the recommendation of the panel members which recommended that a junior chief in Oke-Ero local government be upgraded over and above his senior to a First Class stool.

In the letter obtained by The Nation, some concerned citizens of the council enjoined the governor to “call for a memorandum submitted by these concerned citizens in Oke-Ero before announcing the result, otherwise there will be breakdown of law and order in the council.”

The petition was signed by Taiye Emmanuel, Adeleke Ogunyemi, Bamgboye Isaac and Olakala Abidoye.

The petition, in part, reads: “To strengthen your outlook as a people’s governor, you sometimes ago set up a panel to review the grading of traditional rulers in order to put to rest the agitation of communities in the state for upgrading the stools of their traditional rulers.

“It is disheartening to not that the outcome of the report of the review panel may not augur well to the generality of some parts of the state. The said panel did not review the report of the original panel because the latter did not make it available to them.

“A particular case is that of Alofa of Ilofa wherein a very junior chief in Oke-Ero is now recommended to a first class status over and above his seniors. A junior should not be made to lead his seniors.”

  • Kwara 2015: Season of ‘Ahmed for second term’ endorsements

Kwara 2015: Season of ‘Ahmed for second term’ endorsements

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the support for and acceptance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara state are soaring. The  acceptability and popularity of APC are also rubbing off on  the incumbent Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

Day by day, groups, women organisations and  individuals are accordingly rooting for another term in office for the governor. These days, the governor’s office  is always inundated with people pledging their support to the governor they claim has been a ‘loyal’ party man.

Though the APC has ruled out automatic ticket for any of its candidates in the 2015 elections, this, however, is a season of gale of endorsements and support for the governor.

Recently, the people of Ifelodun local government area of the state and members of Joint Motorcycle Riders Association in the 16 local government areas joined the growing league of people demanding for another term in office for Governor Ahmed.

The people are also pledging their continued loyalty and support for the former governor of the state, Senator Bukola Saraki, for his leadership qualities.

They hailed the senator representing Kwara Central district and a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state for “pulling us out of the torn and tattered umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”

Chairman, Elders Forum of Ifeldun local government, where Governor Ahmed hails from, Alhaji Kola Yusuf, told reporters yesterday in Ilorin, the state capital, that PDP has become rudderless.

Alhaji Yusuf who was surrounded by political appointees and office holders from the council added that: “We people of Ifelodun plead with the leadership of our party APC and other party members in the state to give the  incumbent governor a second term to enable him continue with

the good work which he has embarked upon all over the state  even with the small quantum of funds at his disposal.

“Our current governor has  managed to stabilise his administration in the current difficult financial situation, removing him now for mere change will be counterproductive to the entire state machinery of government.

“As an illustrious son of the local government, Governor Ahmed has already displayed sufficient  proof that given a second chance he is capable of further  initiatives that will have more positive impact on the lives of Kwarans.

“Governor Ahmed has demonstrated beyond all reasonable doubt that he is a loyal party man who is willing to listen to his  superiors and take their advice in the development strategy of the state. For the past three and half years in office he has refused to rock the boat but has concentrated his energies in developing the state as a good team player.

“We have witnessed in the past how some governors turned themselves into terror groups at the expense of their sponsors, thereby throwing the state into confusion in their selfish bid to turn the table against their sponsors.”

Led by their chairman, Alhaji Abdulraheem Akanbi, the Okada riders, who came in large number to Government House, Ilorin promised the governor and the APC

leader in the state, Senator Bukola Saraki, to ensure election victory for the party In 2015.

The commercial motorcycle operators also commended the current state government for creating a  conducive environment to carry out their daily business, against the ban on the operation in some other states of the federation due to bad eggs among the operators.

They, however, solicited government’s assistance in the provision of revolving loans as a form of empowerment for members, adding that some of them are educated to take government appointments.

They also commended the present state government on its development efforts such as road and school construction, renovation and equipping of five general hospitals, provision of potable water,  and employment generation, as well as efforts on security of lives and properties.

In his response, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed called on commercial motorcycle operators in the state to be security conscious and provide useful information to security agencies, saying they are closer to various types of people in the society due to the nature of their job.

The governor, who said security is everybody’s concern, added that only duly registered okada operators would be allowed to operate in the state to ensure security and identify bad eggs.

He also told them to organise themselves into associations in order to enjoy benefits of government, saying government would only support them with loans through cooperative groups.

Also, the state chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) led by its chair, Kazeem Adekanye, said over one million youths in the state have unanimously endorsed him  for a second term in office.

Adekanye attributed the endorsement of the governor for a second term to his achievements in the area of youth empowerment and employment. He said “I have the mandate of the over 1million teeming youths of the state to commend your administration for the excellent work you have done or initiated for the overall development of the state especially in the area of youth empowerment/employment through the KWABES, QuickWin,  Entrepreneurship Scheme, payment of bursary and provision of scholarship to the students and direct youth employment into the state civil service which has seen to the empowerment of 10,000 youths.”

The women folk under the auspices of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has also solidarised with the governor.

The President of NCWS in Kwara State, Hajia Barakat Atunse, said that “without bein rhetorical, sir, your shared prosperity project contents is having far reaching positive effect on Kwarans. It is devolving and trickling down to the door steps of all Kwarans regardless of political colouration or inclination.

“The project touches on employment, education, health, socio-economic transformation, water, energy, road, etc.”

Hajia Atunse pledged the commitment and support of the women folk to the state government in improving the well-being of the women in the State.

The NCWS also noted that the wife of the Governor, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed has through her LEAH Charity Foundation touched “lives unimaginably, particularly women and children”.

Governor Ahmed had equally expressed his administration’s readiness to support  operators in the transport sector as an important platform for the development of any economy.

It also dismissed claims that it has not started any new project since assuming office.

He said it would be wrong for any government to downplay the vital role transporters play in enhancing daily economic activities of citizens, hence the need to support them.

The two groups visited the governor to express their support for his administration and called on him to contest the forthcoming election in the state with a pledge to support him if he decides to do so.

Ahmed, who spoke in Yoruba told leaders of the RTEAN to dismiss anyone who claims his administration has only been completing projects started by his predecessor as he pointed out that if he had left such projects just to prove that he is now the governor much of public funds would be wasted.

He said; “If we left the schools or roads uncompleted just because we want to prove that we are now governor whose funds was used in starting the schools and roads, is it not your funds? should it be wasted like that? That has been the bane of development in many places.”

“You have been useful in driving governance for us in the state”, he said in his address to each of

the groups and applauded them for keeping to their promise to support his government during the 2011 campaign expressing delight that they have not reneged on the vow.

He said; “your role is very key in driving the national economy because you are responsible for the movement of goods and services and so when we are planning for any economy, we must not fail to include you” and asked them to continue in ensuring a peaceful atmosphere in the state warning that in the absence of peace there cannot be an development.

The governor promised to include the two groups in the various economic empowerment schemes in the state but warned that only those who are registered members of the units and associations in the sector would be recognised for such empowerment.

He directed graduate members of the Okada Riders Association who wish to take up government jobs to register with identified state officials with a promise that he would look into their request about fixing them up.

    Youths, others back Ahmed

The Kwara State chapter of the National Youth Council (NYC) has endorsed Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for a second term.

NYC Chairman Kazeem Adekanye gave the endorsement at a visit to the governor in Ilorin, the state capital.

Hailing Ahmed for empowering youths, Adekanye said: “I have the mandate of over one million youths in the state to commend your administration for the excellent work you have done or initiated for the state’s development, especially in youth empowerment/employment through the KWABES, QuickWin, Entrepreneurship Scheme, payment of bursary and provision of scholarships to students and youth employment into the civil service.”

Ahmed urged the political class to equip youths for nation building and cautioned youths against selling their votes.

He said the government would establish a Ministry of Youth Development.

The people of Ifelodun Local Government Area and the Joint Motorcycle Riders Association in the 16 local government areas also endorsed Ahmed for a second term.

The people of Ifelodun council also pledged their loyalty to Senator Bukola Saraki.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Ilorin, the Chairman of Ifelodun Elders’ Forum, Alhaji Kola Yusuf, said: “The people of Ifelodun plead with the leadership of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and members to give Ahmed a second term to enable him continue with the good work he has embarked upon with the limited funds at his disposal.

“He has displayed sufficient proof that given a second chance, he is capable of further initiatives that will have more positive impact on Kwarans.”

Commercial motorcyclists, led by their Chairman, Alhaji Abdulraheem Akanbi, stormed the Government House, pledging their support to Ahmed and Saraki.

They thanked the governor for not banning commercial motorcycles and urged him to provide revolving loans for them.

They hailed him for building roads and schools, renovating and equipping five general hospitals, providing potable water, creating jobs and securing life and property.

Ahmed urged them to be security conscious, adding that only registered motorcyclists would be allowed to operate.

  • …And Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed too

SIR: We the 2012/2013 law school set wish to use this medium to appeal to our amiable Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed to as a matter of urgency order the payment of our law school scholarship. We understand that the said scholarship has been approved by his Excellency and the continue delay in payment is causing excruciating and untold hardship to those affected.

Senior Special Assistant (media and communication) to the Governor Muyideen Akorede had in a news article in Nigerian Tribune of March 31, assured the 2012/2013 set of the government readiness to pay all eligible students once the 2014 budget was signed into law.  Incidentally, the budget was signed into law that very day of the publication, and for more than five months after the budget has been signed into law and almost one year after the 2012/2013 have been called to the Bar, the 2012/2013 set have not been paid.

As part of efforts to unravel the reason(s) for the delay, we met with the chairman of Kwara State Schorlaship Board, Hon Isiaka Mogaji, who also confirmed that the government has approved the scholarship but added that the Commissioner of Finance is yet to kick-start the process of disbursement. This is the point we are at the moment. All our attempts to reach the Commissioner of Finance have proved abortive.

We are aware that it is only Kwara State that has not settled the 2012/2013 Law School Scholarship of all the states in the North-central Nigeria, and we are not happy with this development.  Giving scholarship to law students every year has become a tradition all over the country as part of government’s palliative measure to their indigenes in the Nigerian law school, whose fee is unbearably excessive. Some sold their belongings; many are currently in huge financial debts because of their inability to repay the loans they secured to pay law school fees. We have suffered enough. Please, help us.

Kwara State is one of the few states in the country that is proud to have highest number of lawyers and this is partly because of the government desire to assist its indigenes in the payment of Law School fee, which many of us have come to appreciate.

We appeal to our amiable Governor Ahmed who we strongly believe is a lover of education and very hardworking to address this issue and to ensure that the 2012/2013 set are paid once and for all.
