‘Power should shift to North district’

Four governorship aspirants from Kwara North have expressed their interest to take over the reins of power from Governor Abdulraman AbdulRazaq in 2027.

AbdulRazaq had in his first term assured of a power shift to the zone.

The aspirants said this in Ilorin, the state capital, at a stakeholders’ meeting.

They pleaded with other senatorial districts to concede the seat of governance in the state to Kwara North.

They spoke at stakeholders’ by Senator representing the zone at the National Assembly, Sodiq Umar, the House of Assembly Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Chairman Abdullahi Samari.

Alhaji Samari, said that the zone was one big family united to produce the next governor of the state.

Those who have shown interest to contest for the number one seat in the state are Senator Umar; Hon Danladi-Salihu; Makama of Lafiagi Alhaji Tajudeen Audu; and Haliru Dantosho Mahmud.

The APC deputy chair added that the meeting was convened “to put our house in order and let the world know that Kwara North is prepared and ready to take over from the current administration come 2027.

According to him, the senatorial district have resolved to continue with Abdulrazaq’s good work, assuring Kwarans that whoever emerges as the governorship candidate will perform wonders to the amazement of those who think we don’t have materials.

“We have also invited the aspirants today for them to sit down and work together so that those who claim we cannot work together will know it is not true. We are trying to put our house in order to the envy of others who never thought we can work in unity.

“Principally, APC has guidelines and that will be followed before a candidate will emerge.

“We want to assure Kwarans and Nigerians that those aspiring to govern the state from Kwara north are people with enough wisdom and experience; people with fear of God, love for the masses, and have resolved to work together.”

All the four aspirants took turns to express their resolve to rally round anyone that will eventually emerge as the governorship candidate in 2027.

Also, Senator Umar said the governorship seat is what the zone has been “hungry for in the interest of Kwara first and of course, our region.

“All we are asking is for Kwarans to trust us and give us this opportunity to also govern the state.

“There is no division between us. We are all working together. Kwara north is united and not divided. We are one people and the same family.”

Speaker Danladi-Salihu waxing spiritual, said the project is God’s and “by God’s grace, we will reach the destination.

“We are only pleading with Kwara south and central senatorial districts to support the northern zone to have the ticket in 2027.”

Another aspirant, Audu said that “we are all united in support of a single cause of producing the governor for our zone in 2027.

“I use this forum to implore Kwarans to support us in the interest of the whole state because we are all Kwarans.”

  • AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s quest for success

    AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s quest for success

Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Executive Governor of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, has undeniably made a significant impact on the development of his state. His tenure, which spans over five years, has been marked by a remarkable commitment to building state-of-the-art infrastructure and improving the quality of life for the citizens of Kwara, despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles. While his demeanor may be quiet and unassuming, his strategic thinking and decisive actions have propelled Kwara State to greater heights, establishing it as a model for progress among its peers across Nigeria.

Prior to Abdulrahman’s ascendance to governorship, Kwara State was plagued by numerous systemic issues that hindered its development. However, through a combination of visionary leadership and effective governance, he has successfully restored the confidence of the Kwara people. His administration has focused on delivering meaningful reforms across various sectors, ensuring significant improvements that touch the lives of citizens in multiple ways.

At 60 years old, Governor Abdulrahman is particularly known for his advocacy for people living with disabilities. His philanthropic efforts are commendable, including a substantial donation of Braille learning tools and educational aids to the School of the Blind in Ilorin and the Pacelli School of the Blind. Beyond the boundaries of Kwara State, he has also extended his charitable contributions to international causes, such as his support for the Children of Africa Foundation, which operates the Mother and Child’s Hospital (MCH) in Bingerville, Côte d’Ivoire. Since assuming office, he has prioritized enhancing facilities for people with disabilities, as well as focusing on the needs of vulnerable populations through improved infrastructure in correctional facilities.

In the face of political opposition, Governor Abdulrahman has been quietly recognized for his significant reforms and investments in several crucial areas, including healthcare and education development, civil service welfare, and security enhancements. A recent initiative involved the acquisition of several buses, which are set to improve transportation accessibility for citizens by connecting various locations, including major urban centers such as Abuja, Lagos, and Ibadan. The pilot scheme also targets several Local Government Areas within Kwara, including Lafiagi, Kiama, Patigi, Baruten, and Moro, which are slated to benefit from this affordable transportation initiative.

To bolster security across the state and enhance the safety of lives and properties, Governor Abdulrahman has partnered with the Office of the National Security Adviser and neighboring states, including Kogi and Niger. This collaboration led to the deployment of over 400 security personnel in a concerted effort to combat criminal activity. Reports indicate that approximately 20 criminals, including suspected gun runners and their logistical supporters, were apprehended in the Ifelodun Local Government Area. The operation specifically targets Ifelodun, Ekiti, Edu, Patigi, and other border areas where recent security breaches have been observed, ensuring these regions are effectively patrolled and monitored.

Sources suggest that Governor Abdulrahman remains steadfast in his commitment to establishing long-lasting peace in Kwara State, actively working to end insecurity and promote a positive environment for growth and development. His administration’s focus on vital areas highlights his dedication to leaving a legacy of prosperity and stability for the future of Kwara.

  • Kwara 2027: Who succeeds AbdulRazaq?

    Kwara 2027: Who succeeds AbdulRazaq?

Correspondent ADEKUNLE JIMOH examines the issues that will shape succession politics in Kwara State ahead of 2027 polls.

With barely two years to the 2027 general election, the scramble for the governorship slots of political parties in Kwara State is already gaining traction.

Expectedly, both old and emerging political gladiators across party lines are testing the waters, engaging in subtle mobilisation, and in some cases, aggressive behind-the-scenes lobbying. What was once whispers in political corridors is now fast becoming an open conversation. So, who takes over from Governor  AbdulRaheem AbdulRazaq?

While the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is yet to formally set the ball rolling, intrigues within the party, especially between the fovernor and some of his potential successors, are heating up the polity. On the other side of the divide, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, led by former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, are also quietly retooling to snatch back power from the ruling APC.

    Senator Sadiq Umar:

The People’s annointed Senator Sadiq Umar, the soft-spoken but steady lawmaker representing Kwara North, has served two terms in the Senate with commendable output. His legislative performance and visible community outreach have earned him significant goodwill across his district, enough that if the people of Kwara North were to choose their next governor by themselves, Sadiq would likely be the consensus pick.

But despite his popularity, Sadiq is not the Governor’s anointed. In the evolving power chessboard of Kwara APC, that single fact places him at a disadvantage. So, while Sadiq may be the people’s favourite, he faces an uphill battle to secure the ticket. In Kwara politics, without the blessing of the incumbent, popularity alone is rarely enough.

     Salihu Danladi:

He is the anointed protége. The Speaker of House of Assembly, Salihu Danladi, from Kwara North Senatorial District, is widely believed to be AbdulRazaq’s preferred successor.

Loyal to a fault and politically expendable, Danladi has taken bullets on behalf of the governor, especially over controversial amendments to the Freedom of Information law.

While his loyalty and the governor’s backing give him institutional leverage, the perception of being imposed from above could backfire in a state still wary of godfatherism which the Otoge crusades fought in the 2019 political onslaught that rested the Saraki political dynasty. Whether he can step out of the governor’s shadow and win the people’s trust remains a looming question.

    Yahaya Seriki:

He symbolises Plan B. Young, wealthy, and politically loyal, Ambassador Yahaya Seriki is widely believed to be AbdulRazaq’s Plan B in case his plans to zone the ticket to the Northern part of the state failed. Seriki, a mining mogul and quiet political investor since 2015, is also rumoured to have the blessings of Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son — a factor many consider both an asset and a liability.

    Lateef Fagbemi (SAN)

He may be the Dark Horse. In Kwara South, murmurs are growing louder for Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Though he has not declared any interest, those behind the “Fagbemi-for-Governor” lobby argue that in the spirit of ‘Awalokan’ this may be the best moment for the Yoruba-speaking axis of the state to produce another governor in the state.

However, the senior advocate’s emergence would raise difficult questions around zoning and structure, two important issues in present-day Kwara political landscape. Whether the APC in Kwara is ready for such an elite wildcard remains to be seen.

     Saliu Mustapha:

He is In the eye of the storm. Arguably the most popular politician in Kwara today, Senator Saliu Mustapha, the Turaki of Ilorin and Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, commands cult-like grassroots followership. He is also widely accepted outside senatorial district. With a combination of youthful appeal, philanthropy, and strategic visibility, he presents a formidable front for APC’s retention of power.

However, the elephant in the room is the cold war between him and the governor. Their frosty relationship, which insiders say stems from conflicting visions of power succession, could derail his ambition if the party machinery is used against him.

    Lanre Issa-Onilu:

He is a seasoned journalist. The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, is a cerebral communicator and respected public servant. Though he boasts of capacity and experience, his weak grassroots connection and alleged strained relationship with the governor make his path to the governorship less likely — unless power brokers outside the state intervene forcefully on his behalf.

    Abubakar Suleiman:

The Director-General of the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, Prof. Suleiman, brings national and academic stature to the table. As a former minister under President Jonathan, and defector from the PDP, his entry into APC has proved bookmarkers wrong about where the pendulum may likely swing in 2027. Abubakar is expected to leverage his relationship with the leadership of the National Assembly to spring a surprise in the political chessboard in the state.

Abubakar also boasts of a wide political support base as he is said to have succeeded in galvanising the former PDP chieftains who detected into the APC to sore up his political structure in the state. APC stalwarts still see him as a “Saraki mole” — a tag that may be hard to shake off in a highly factionalised political landscape like Kwara state where the name Saraki is still loved and loathed in equal proportion.

    Attahiru Manko:

He may be the emergency back-up. A recent defector from Social Democratic Party (SDP), Attahiru Manko is being positioned as a backup to the governor’s alleged annointed candidate, Danladi, in case the Nupe bloc from Kwara North insist on producing the governor in 2027. Though little known statewide, his sudden elevation allegedly on AbdulRazaq’s order suggests he may become a compromise candidate if power calculations in the north become too fractious.

    The Opposition:

The opposition is gathering its pieces together.

While the ruling APC is grappling with internal rangling, the PDP is steadily regrouping, and unsurprisingly, Dr. Bukola Saraki remains the undisputed leader of the bloc. Despite setbacks in 2019 and 2023, the former Senate President is not retreating, if anything, he is recalibrating for a grand comeback.

Saraki is not leaving any stone unturned. Beyond revitalising its grassroots structure, he is reportedly strategically poaching from the APC, with whispers of high-level realignments gaining traction. One such move is the widely reported plan to woo the influential Mustapha brothers into the PDP fold, a strategy aimed at swelling the party’s ranks with heavyweights ahead of 2027.

For Saraki, it’s not just about winning elections; it is about orchestrating an immense political takeover that resets the balance of power in Kwara. Whether this plan matures or not, one thing is clear: the opposition is no longer in disarray; it is regrouping, with precision

    The Road to Ilorin 2027

The race for Kwara Government House is still in its embryonic stage, but one thing is certain: the battle lines are being drawn, alliances are forming, and old tensions are resurfacing.

While APC continues to grapple with internal contradictions and an outgoing governor whose succession plan is viewed with suspicion, the opposition may yet rise if it succeeds in forging unity.

AbdulRazaq hosts, splashes cash, land rewards on Kwara’s Federation Cup Champions

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Monday hosted the Kwara United Football Club following their historic emergence as the 2025 President Federation Cup champions.

He also hosted the U-19 category of the team who also won the inaugural National Youth League.

The Governor gifted each of the Kwara United players five million naira and a plot of land at the exclusive Kwara Smart City, commending them for making the state proud.

The Kwara United Club had beaten their Abakaliki FC counterparts in a match that was decided through penalty shootouts following a 90-minute play.

The team made a triumphant entry into Ilorin on Monday afternoon, with residents of the capital city waving their long motorcade from Eiyenkorin down to the banquet hall in the downturn GRA where the reception was held.

He said: “This is the biggest trophy in Nigeria today. It is bigger than the League Cup. This has been in existence even before the League was formed. The trophy is in Kwara, Today. I must congratulate everybody who has made it happen,” the Governor said at the reception, recalling how the administration had invested to turn around the team.

“When we came in 2019, everything was down. We were owing players a lot of money, but today the story has changed. So, I thank you all for what you are doing.

“Our administration is dedicating this trophy in memory of Alhaji Yusuf Salami, who spent his entire wealth without government support to bring in this trophy to Kwara, but he didn’t succeed. May Allah grant him Alijanna Fridaous.”

AbdulRazaq specifically commended the team, Coach Magaji, Kumbi, and the entire management for their dedication to rewriting the story of the Football Club.

Coach Magaji and Kumbi Titiloye, in their separate remarks, appreciated the Governor for hugely investing in the team to achieve greater success.

Adebayo left a fine legacy, says AbdulRazaq

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq yesterdaymourned the death of former Governor Chief Cornelius Adebayo.

He described Adebayo as “an all-time patriot, statesman, and progressive who represented great ideals and fought for good causes throughout his lifetime”.

The governor stated: “I received with sadness but submission to the will of God the report of the death of His Excellency, former Governor Cornelius Adebayo. He was 84.

“With his carriage and roles at various levels of leadership, the former Governor stood tall and earned the respect and admiration of all.

“He left a fine legacy as a democrat who stood up at critical moments of our history.

“On behalf of the people and government of our state, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and associates at this difficult moment.”

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), described the death of Adebayo as the end of a remarkable era in public service.

Egbewole commiserated with the Government and people of Kwara State over the demise of a former governor of the state.

In a statement by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, Prof Egbewole recalled the several roles played by the late Adebayo in national development, particularly in the nation’s education sector.

The Vice-Chancellor also recalled that the tenure of Chief Adebayo as Kwara Commissioner for Education coincided with the period when the University of Ilorin was taking shape.

The VC said the support enjoyed by the university from the government and the people of Kwara contributed to making the university what it has become.

  • President Federation Cup: Sanwo-Olu, Abdulrazaq set to grace grand finale

President Federation Cup: Sanwo-Olu, Abdulrazaq set to grace grand finale

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State is expected to be the special guest of honour at Saturday’s President Federation Cup grand finale at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos in which Cup holders Rivers Angels will confront Nasarawa Amazons in the women’s final, before ‘giant-killers’ Abakaliki FC tango with Kwara United in the men’s final.

A colourful occasion is afoot by the Lagos Waterfront with Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq also confirmed to be in attendance, while the number one citizens of Nasarawa, Ebonyi and Rivers State may also be in attendance or send high-powered delegations.

It is the first time that a team from Ebonyi State, which was created in October 1996, will reach the final of Nigeria’s national Cup competition, while it is the first time in 49 years that a team from Kwara State, which was created in 1967, will show up at the final of the competition.

In 1976, little-known Alyufsalam Rocks of Ilorin decimated more illustrious clubs across the country to reach the final of what was then known as the Challenge Cup, losing 2-0 to Rangers International of Enugu. Today’s Ebonyi State was created from parts of Enugu and Abia States.

This year, Abakaliki FC have turned out to be the surprise packets. The club has continued to show disdain for big names, and have, like Kwara State’s Alyufsalam Rocks 49 years ago, sailed into the final at the expense of fabulous names in the football establishment.

NPFL clubs Katsina United (who fell 2-3 after penalty kicks in the Round of 32), two-time African champions Enyimba FC (grilled 2-0 in the Round of 16), Nasarawa United (bumped in the quarter finals following 4-5 penalty-kicks defeat and Ikorodu City (whose sweet song was truncated after another 4-5 penalty-kicks defeat in the semi-finals) were the victims, after Yobe Desert Stars were cut out in the Round of 64.

The club is financed by Senator Joseph Obinna Ogba, a former Chairman of Ebonyi State Football Association, one-time vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation and a two-term Senator of the Federal Republic.

Although Kwara United had a foretaste of Ebonyi opposition earlier in the competition, when they dismissed Cynosure FC in the Round of 64, they will do well not to take anything for granted against Abakaliki FC when the whistle goes for kick-off inside the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Nicknamed Afonja Warriors, the progress of Kwara United, coached by Tunde Sanni to this year’s final has attracted the keen interest of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari and indeed persons in high and low places in the entire Kwara State.

“I was once an official of Shooting Stars (another top-tier club based in Ibadan) and the Nigeria Football Federation. I know what is at stake in a crucial match like this. Prepare well, remain focused and stay united. We will continue to pray for your success,” were the words of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari to the team before the contingent departed for Lagos.

Abdulrazaq celebrated as Aviation College graduates 19 military, civilian pilots

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has emphasised the role of discipline and teamwork in success stories.

He spoke on Friday as the International Aviation College Ilorin graduated 19 student pilots, including 10 enrollees from the Nigerian Army, the highest in the history of the training school.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, AbdulRazaq called for sustained perseverance, discipline, and team building among pilots.

“It’s been six months of rigorous training that got you here. You have learned a lot within the period from perseverance, discipline, to team building. You must sustain these to succeed,” AbdulRazaq said.

Represented by Commissioner for Tertiary Education Saadatu Modibbo-Kawu, the Governor said the graduates are not just equipped with certificates but have also imbibed the knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute meaningfully to the society.

“The state government is extremely excited to witness this very important achievement in the lives of these students. We are happy with the partnership between the College and the Nigerian Army,” he added.

AbdulRazaq commended management, staff and students of the College for their tireless efforts to sustain the school.

The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, who spoke through the Brigade Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade Nigerian Army Sobi Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, said the training seeks to fully operationalize the Nigerian Army Aviation.

“This will no doubt reshape the battle space for all our operations, thereby enhancing operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army,” he added.

“As you are graduating today, embrace every challenge as an opportunity for growth, and remember that with perseverance and resilience, you will go beyond the sky. I urge you to exhibit the core values of which the Nigerian Army is known for. You must remain focused always, and together, you will overcome obstacles, celebrate triumphs, and build a legacy that will endure throughout the annals of the Nigerian Army.”

Rector of International Aviation College Ilorin Captain Yakubu Okahtai, explained that Private Pilot License (PPL) serves as a gateway to advanced aviation training, enabling them to transition into operational roles that will significantly enhance the Nigerian Army’s air mobility and reconnaissance capabilities.

“This occasion marks not just the successful completion of a rigorous training exercise but also the beginning of a new chapter in the careers of these gallant officers who have chosen to serve their nation in the skies,” he said.

“The Private Pilot License (PPL) training undertaken by our student pilots is a crucial foundation in their journey towards becoming proficient civil/military aviators. This training is more than just an introduction to flying: it instils discipline, precision, and a keen sense of responsibility, qualities that are essential for military aviation.”

Okahtai appreciated the Kwara State Government for its invaluable role in the success of the training programme.

“The partnership between the Nigerian Army and the Kwara State Government is a testament to the importance of synergy between military institutions and civil authorities. This collaboration has not only contributed to the success of this exercise but has also laid a foundation for future training programmes that will continue to produce highly skilled military pilots,” the Rector said.

Okahtai disclosed that since the inception of the current management in March, 2022, the College has graduated 62 Students.

Speaking on behalf of the new pilots, Lieutenant Smart Ebube Aghogho thanked the management of the College and the instructors for their expertise and the support they needed to excel in the dynamic field as well as the Nigerian Army for giving them the opportunity to get trained at the esteemed aviation training institution in Nigeria.

“Today marks the cumulation of months of hardwork, perseverance, dedication, and rigorous trainings. We can only thank God, who has given us strength and brought us this far,” he said.

“We have overcome countless challenges from sleepless nights of studying, weekend classes, weekends of flying, progress checks, mocks, NCAA examination and cross-country navigation.”

The star civilian graduate of the day is Musa Aliu Damilola, who trended three years ago after building mini planes and drones, which he later took to the Kwara State Government House.

Musa Aliu Damilola appreciated Governor AbdulRazaq for supporting his dream of becoming a pilot with state sponsorship at the International Aviation College Ilorin.

“I appreciate His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support towards my career. I never expected to be here today, but here I am doing PPL graduation. He also supported me to acquire Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). He made my dream come true. I want to use this moment to appreciate him once again,” he said.

“Right from my childhood, my passion was to become a pilot, but there was no support. I started by building small aircraft. Luckily,  I met with a former Special Assistant to the Governor Cute Abiola who introduced me to His Excellency, and the Governor sponsored me to the International Aviation College Ilorin. Now, I am pursuing my CPL after PPL.”
