The inhabitants of Umuorie community in Asa town, Ukwa West Local Government Area of  Abia State have staged a protest on what they described as forceful invasion of their land by Chinese Steel company in the area,  Inner Galaxy Steal company limited.

The protest which started by 9am Monday at Umuorie community in Abia State, was aborted by police who insisted that the protest was against the recent ban of protest in Nigeria which extended to the area.

When The Nation got to the scene of protest, a boundary community with Rivers State, the protesters was carrying placards with different descriptions to match to the company’s gate when the news got to the police and the protest was aborted.

Reacting on the situation Monday, the paramount ruler of Umuorie Autonomous community, His Royal Highness, Eze Innocent Umunnakwe Nkwoch, accused the company of deception  and unfair to the communities.

The Monarch said since the company entered the community they have not visited his palace, adding that they deceived his subjects by using the name of the Federal government to acquire the land which was paid with peanut.

He also accused the company of defying labour law and forcefully taking more lands to build network mask and power generation without consulting the community.

Eze Nkwocha said: “I am not aware of the company operation in my community, they have not visited my palace, and if they are here I don’t know. Because I cannot associate myself with something I know nothing about. But what I cannot condole is to allow a stranger to humiliate by people by disobeying the laws of the land.

“They brought a document in the night and forced many people to sign. Since the document was signed I have never set my eyes on the document. They prevented the community from knowing what was inside the document. Some of the youths working with them are being paid only N500 per day, after working from morning till evening, this is bad.”

The community youth leader, Comrade Nnamdi Ogbonna alleged that the company has insulted the youths of the area by neglecting  the Memoranda of Understanding signed between the community and the company.

Ogbonna expressed worries that environmental Impact assessment report was not out before the commencement of the company operation which he said was against the law following the economic trees and other natural resources damaged in the land.

The youth leader who called on the company not to take their peaceful deposition for granted also alleged that the company trespassed into land that were not given to them which he said have rendered some inhabitants homeless.

A Human Right Lawyer, Mr.  Higher King who was hired by the community to take over the matter described the activities of the Chinese steal Company against his client as injustice and threatened to employ all legal means to ensure that justice is done.

He said he is going to exhaust all dialogue means before taking the matter to court, adding that it is a serious crime in China to invade into community land without proper negotiation.

He said: “There should be an impact assessment report on the land before the company will start operation but up till now we are yet to receive that report. What they did is to force elderly people in the community to sign a document which they took away without the people seeing what they signed.

“This is a serious matter; we are going to give the company a little chance to revise from their mistakes and misconduct. But if they cannot realize their mistakes, then, we are going to address the issue in court. You cannot take peoples land with force; it cannot happen not even in China.

Effort to reach the Company proves abortive as no staff of the company was there when The Nation visited the place.

The Divisional Police Officer who led his men to the palace of the Monarch who pleaded anonymity said he visited the Monarch to advice the youths of the community not to take law into their land.

He noted that he was directed from the higher authority of his command to stop the youths from carrying the protest.

  • Aba: Man, three year-old child found dead after rainfall

Aba: Man, three year-old child found dead after rainfall

A middle aged man and a three year-old female; both residents of Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State have been reported to have lost their lives in about four hours torrential rain that hit the Enyimba city on Tuesday.

While the identity of the male and female victims were still unknown as at the time of filing the report, information has it that the incidents happened along Faulks road, near the popular Ariaria International market and Osusu off popular Ama Ogbonna bus stop; all within the heart of the business town respectively.

Their dead bodies were said to have been found floating on top of water on the road and canal hours after being swept off by the heavy water current as bystanders who could not risk losing their lives while trying to save them watch helplessly.

Efforts to reach the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ogbonnaya Nta on his mobile line to speak over the incidents while filing the report failed, a source at the Ariaira Police Division confirmed the death of the middle aged man.

The source however allayed earlier fears that the middle aged man was a trader or a customer coming to Ariaria International market as was earlier speculated by callers to the scene.

The source who said that efforts were ongoing to ensure that the corpse of the male victim was removed from the scene because of the health hazards it posed to shop owners, commercial banks and other road users identified the male victim as a mentally retarded who was well-known by most shop owners and traders at the market.

A source at Osusu off Ama Ogbonna confirmed the death of the three year-old girl who was said to be returning from a church service with her mother but while she was trying to cross the gutter, failed into the gutter and was swiftly carried away while efforts to save her proved abortive.

Her body was said to have been spotted floating in drainage some kilometers away from the scene of the incident.

The source said that the incident happened almost immediately after a three hour heavy rain Sunday night and not on Tuesday as speculated by people.

  • Court judgment a call for more service to Abians – Ikpeazu

Court judgment a call for more service to Abians – Ikpeazu

The governor of Abia state Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has described the Appeal Court judgment that reaffirmed him as governor as a vehicle that will reinvigorate him to offer more services to the people of the state.

Reacting to the Appeal Court judgment in Umuahia, Ikpeazu said that the news before him and the people of the state is a pleasant one which has put to rest the issue of who has the mandate to govern the state.

Ikpeazu said, “The news before us is a wonderful one, as our mandate has been reaffirmed by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, the judgment will reinvigorate our efforts in our service to Ndi Abia”.

The Governor flanked by his Deputy Ude Okochukwu and Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt Hon Martins Azubuike, commended the judiciary for restoring the mandate of the people of the state.

He said, “I want to thank those who prayed and are still praying for the victory, as the democratic gains this country has achieved are too precious to be thrown away at the wimps of a court judgment”.

Ikpeazu; “I am confident that our tomorrow will be better that our today. We will serve Ndi Abia with the last drop of our energy, by ensuring that the mandate given to us will not be mishandled in any way”.

In his speech the PDP BoT chairman Senator Waheed Jubril said the party hierarchy was confident that the governor would win the case and expressed confidence that Governor Ikpeazu would govern Abia well.

Jubril said that they were in the state for the condolence of Chief Ojo Maduekwe and had been praying for his success of Ikpeazu at the court as they never entertained any fears that he would lose at the Court of Appeal.

  • Ogah: I’m not desperate to be Abia governor

Ogah: I’m not desperate to be Abia governor

A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Abia State, Dr Uche Ogah, Wednesday said his demand to be sworn in as governor was not borne out of desperation.

He said contrary to impression being created, his case against Governor Okezie Ikpeazu was far from being an ambush.

According to him, his victory at the court is valid and not “a hurriedly executed legal ambush for the acquisition of political power as being insinuated by some persons.”

“My case is strongly anchored on facts, and the refusal of Ikpeazu to respond to the core issues and his resort to propaganda speaks volumes,” Ogah said.

At a briefing in Lagos through his counsel Mr Monday Ubani, Ogah said his case predated Ikpeazu’s swearing in as governor and had reached the Supreme Court before returning to the lower court.

Ogah said his claim was that Ikpeazu was not eligible to participate in the primaries on the basis that he failed to pay his taxes as and when due as required by the 1999 Constitution, PDP’s Guidelines, and the Electoral Act of 2010. He said on the face of it, Ikpeazu’s tax clearance was questionable.

The Tax Clearance form (Code PD002/G), dated November 4, 2014, and sworn to at the High Court Registry, Aba, shows that Ikpeazu’s tax receipt number for December 2011 is 0012849; that of December 2012 is 0012846 and that of December 2013 is 0012847 and 0012848.

“Did he use one booklet to pay tax for three years? Is he the only one paying tax? How come the tax number which ends in 49 came first rather than last?,” Ubani asked.

He said Ogah went to court soon after the primaries because the PDP’s appeal panel failed to respond to his complaints about Ikpeazu’s alleged non-qualification.

When he filed the suit in 2014, Ikpeazu challenged the court’s jurisdiction. The appeal process got to the Court of Appeal until it was decided by the Supreme Court which ruled that the Federal High Court had jurisdiction to hear the case.

The first judge handling the case, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, withdrew from the case on the basis that he was accused of bias and returned the file to the Chief Judge. The matter was re-assigned to Justice Okon Abang.

“If Ikpeazu is convinced about the rightness of his cause, he should vacate the seat, plead his case in a court of law and when granted victory come back rather than resort to propaganda,” Ubani said.

According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not be blamed for issuing Ogah with a certificate of return because the court ordered that it should be with immediate effect.

Besides, there was no order to the contrary brought to INEC’s notice. “We got an enrolment order which INEC complied with,” Ubani said.

The lawyer said legal steps would be taken to discharge the restraining order made by an Osisioma High Court stopping Ogah’s inauguration.

“We have to vacate the order lawfully even though the judge who made the order did not indicate a return date,” Ubani said.

On why Ogah should be sworn in, the lawyer said an appeal does not operate as a stay of execution in pre-election matters, adding that it is “absurd” for a court of coordinate jurisdiction to arrest an order made by another court.

“The Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation should have ensured compliance with Justice Abang’s order in the absence of any contrary order, because the judgement says ‘with immediate effect’, and an appeal does not mean a stay of execution because it is not a criminal case,” Ubani said.

He said Ogah would not take the laws into his hands but would pursue his case to the logical conclusion through the courts, adding that he was not desperate to be governor.

Ubani said Ogah, an oil magnate, entrepreneur, investor and President of Master Energy Group, a conglomerate with over 15 subsidiaries and interests across a variety of industries with over 40,000 employees, “is not in the race for the money”.

“He sees involvement in politics as an opportunity to have more solid and sustainable impact on Abia,” he added.

Pro-Biafra groups hold peaceful protest in Aba

Members of the Movement for the Actualization for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) under the leadership of Mr. Uchenna Madu and other pro-Biafra supporters on Tuesday in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State held a peaceful protest.

The Protesters in black apparel, The Nation gathered matched from Powerline by Ariaria-Brass while another group matched from Main Park to Brass junction and later terminated their march at Osisioma junction as they chanted pro-Biafra and anti President Buhari’s songs.

Our reporter gathered that while the groups’ protest lasted, business and economic activities were going on while residents of the city were seen going about their lawful business except for the traffic gridlock on the road while the protesters numbering over two thousand marched on the major roads.

Sources in MASSOB said that they decided to embark on the protest to protest against last Thursday killing of three butchers at the Waterside abattoir located along Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway, Nimbo-Uzo Uwani killing by a soldier serving under 144 Battalion and purported armed herdsmen in Enugu State and the recent statement by President Buhari that Biafra will not be achievable under his watch.

They said that they took the step as a measure to let the world know the injustices that the people of the Old Eastern Region have been suffering in the hands of Nigerian government and also to pass a strong message to the federal government that it was high time it called its agents (security operatives) to order.

They warned that despite the fact that the group had resorted to fighting their cause through peaceful means, they may be forced to use every means available to ensure that “territories of Biafra” remains free from any form of invasion even as they warned that they would not hesitate to strike back should its territory be invaded again.

In a telephone chat, Comrade Anayochukwu Okpara, MASSOB Abia State coordinator said that they were protesting against the statement credited to President Buhari that he will crush Biafra.

According to Okpara, “We want to assure him that nobody can assure Biafra, not even a thousand Buharis. It will surprise him that Biafra will be actualized during his reign as Nigeria’s President.”

He vowed that the group may be forced to continue the protest after their meeting on Tuesday’s night where they hope to discuss other issues.

A source from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who simply identified himself as Chukwuma said “It was in the news that Buhari supported and is still supporting the secession of Western Sahara from Morocco and why is he suppressing the emergence of the Sovereign State of Biafra. Is this double standard? In fact, Buhari will be the last President of Nigeria.”

In a release issued to the press, leader of MASSOB, Uchenna Madu said “The world is a global village. Autocratic and Tyrannical leadership doesn’t prevail in this present world; it is a free platform for everyone to express himself. Biafra actualization is a struggle of survival and advancement which Buhari can never stop. Obasanjo, Yar Adua and Jonathan could not stop it. Buhar’s system of governance openly and evidently support, motivate and inspire the zeal of Biafran struggle. God, History and Humanity are on our side; Biafra.”

Abia State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Ezekiel Udeviotu Onyeke could not be reached for comment, but a senior police officer who pleaded anonymity warned groups like MASSOB against any form of protest, stressing that the state government’s ban on any form of protest in the state still subsist even as the source warned that Police and sister agencies would not fold their arms an watch some individuals or group of people threaten the relative peace in the city of Aba.

Update: Businesses close as soldiers, butchers clash in Aba

Economic and business activities were on Thursday in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State shutdown as butchers at Popular Waterside, along Aba-Ikot Ekpene road clashed with soldiers for allegedly killing two of their members.

The incident which occurred between the hours of 12pm or thereabouts caused pandemonium within the area and Ogbor Hill axis causing many business owners to close for businesses as they feared that the situation could take another dimension and fear of massive arrest by the security agencies.

It was gathered that some butchers that sustained injuries as a result of the gunshots and sporadic shootings were taken to different hospitals within the metropolis where they are receiving medical attention as at the time of filing this report.

Efforts to reach the leaders of the market proved abortive, but sources around the area told our reporter that some of the leaders of the butchers association were at the Aba Area Command of Nigeria Police Force where the body of one of the dead members was taken to after police took the corpse from some of the protesters had wanted to demonstrate round the city with the body.

Information has it that the situation which started taking ethnic and religious coloration forced many Hausas to flee for safety at the nearest police division, while security agencies moved into areas domiciled by the Hausas with their Hilux vans and moved them to the Aba Area Command where they were said to be taking refuge in the event of any reprisal attack.

When our reporter visited the Aba abattoir at Waterside, Mosque by Hospital road and other flash points within the metropolis, Hilux vans of various security agencies were stationed at strategic points to apparently forestall any breakdown of law and order or hoodlums ceasing the opportunity to unleash mayhem on residents.
