Black day for Abia community as gunmen assassinate monarch
The people of Ikeala Ahiaba Autonomous Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State were on Tuesday thrown into mourning when the news broke in the community that their traditional ruler, HRH Eze James Nwabekee was assassinated by unknown gunmen. The incident it was gathered happened at about 10pm Monday night when most of the villagers must have gone to bed.Though the reason for the killing of the traditional ruler as at press time was still sketchy, it was gathered that the gunmen who invaded the traditional ruler’s palace also attempted killing one of the late traditional ruler’s son who escaped by the whiskers. The body of the traditional ruler, according to reports has been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary.A source in the community who spoke anonymously narrating the incident as was gathered from a family source told our correspondent that the gunmen after killing also injured other members of the family, though they were to know the number of wounded persons. The source said that the incident has thrown the community into panic as they were yet to know the reason why the gunmen could invade the palace of the monarch to unleash such a dastardly act on their king. When contacted on his mobile phone, Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ezekiel Onyeke Udeviotu confirmed the incident.According to Udeviotu, the gunmen were four in number, stressing that the incident happened “around 01:25hrs.”He further disclosed that the wife of the Obingwa king was severely shot by the gunmen and that she is currently receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital, stating the reason such dastardly act was yet to be established.“From the look of things, the gunmen were ready to take more lives, because after killing the monarchy in his palour, they went to one of his son’s room and shattered it with bullet. Abia: Tension as Supreme Court set to hear Ikpeazu’s appeal
There is palpable fear in the camps of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State as the Supreme Court begins hearing on the appeal of Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu.
Recall that Ikpeazu had approached the country’s apex court challenging the judgment of the Appeal Court sitting in Owerri, Imo State which sacked him and declared Alex Otti of the APGA the governor of the state.
The Nation gathered that while some members of the two parties were optimistic that the Supreme Court would rule in their favour, others were skeptical of whether the judgment was going to be in their favour.
Information also have it that supporters of the two parties across the 17 local government areas of the state have equally been mobilized to leave for Abuja ahead of Wednesday’s sitting of the Supreme Court.
Supporters of both parties it was gathered have booked for assorted kinds of drinks at respective drinking joints to celebrate the victory of their candidates should the Supreme Court decides to rule on the matter before it the same day.
Some of them who spoke anonymously expressed fears that the judgment and stated that they were willing to accept whatever would be the decision of Supreme Court.
One of the supporters said “you know what happened in Rivers and Ebonyi state matters respectively when they came up for hearing at the Supreme Court. Such a thing may happen in Abia’s case and as I speak with you now, we are on our way to Abuja ahead of tomorrow’s court sitting. Supreme Court like you know is the apex court of the land and whatever their decision is, we will abide by it. But I am sure that our candidate will get a fair hearing.”
It was also gathered that security agencies have beefed-up their units in the state to avoid being caught unawares should any person or group of persons decide to cause breakdown of law and order in the state.

Still on the Abia tribunal blunders
Many commentators, especially legal experts have continued to air their views regarding some of the judgments delivered by both the Houses of Assembly/National Assembly Tribunal and the Governorship Tribunal that sat in Umuahia recently.
It is normal for people, both experts and laymen to try to scrutinize election Tribunal judgments because they have a lot to do with our democracy and leadership which centre on ensuring the well being of the people.
One is always careful in commenting on such a sensitive issue to avoid being accused of partisanship, however, when one takes into consideration some of the events that took place before and during the elections in Abia, and subsequent events that played out during proceedings at the election Tribunals coupled with the reactions of majority of Abia voters, then it would not be out of p lace for a concerned citizen to comment.
It would be recalled that while the Governorship case was pending at the Guber Tribunal, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and her candidate Alex Otti who were challenging the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate Okezie Ikpeazu, filed a motion to inspect the materials used in one of the contentious LGAs of Obingwa, their request was granted by the Tribunal, and after series of delay and frustration by INEC they agreed to grant APGA legal team and forensic experts access to the materials, unfortunately this legitimate order was flouted as thugs suspected to be working for the PDP assaulted the APGA legal team, and prevented them from assessing those sensitive materials needed.
This development no doubt frustrated APGA as they were forced to return to the Tribunal to seek another order compelling INEC to bring the materials to the Tribunal premises for inspection, unfortunately, less than twenty four hours before this order would be carried out, some arsonists also suspected to be supporters of the ruling party (PDP) stormed the INEC office in broad day light and set the place ablaze.
APGA and her candidate were left with the option of requesting for materials of the other LGAs which were later brought for inspection after PDP and some INEC staff were said to have connived and mixed up the materials to frustrate the inspection.
Having suffered avoidable delays as a result of INEC and PDPs unwillingness to obey the orders of the Tribunal on time, APGA and her candidate prayed for time extension to bring more witnesses, which observers believed would be the material contents of the forensic examination, but shockingly, and suspiciously this motion was turned down by the Tribunal under the pretence that the parties were granted seven days each to present their witnesses, and that having exhausted theirs, APGA would not be given additional time.
The Tribunal took such a terrible decision without first of all considering that by the provisions of the electoral act, each of the parties was entitled to fourteen days for presentation of witnesses, and that the seven days given was because the Tribunal claimed it was running out of time.
Again, the Tribunal denied the extension of time without recourse to the delay tactics applied by INEC and the defense team who were never punished for their disobedience and lack of diligence.
The Tribunal did not also reason that the petitioner’s legal team was given only seven days to face the three joined parties of Okezie Ikpeazu, PDP, and INEC who were allocated separate number of days during the presentation of witnesses.
Surprisingly, the Tribunal that claimed it was running out of time added extra four days to the date earlier agreed for adoption of written addresses, claiming that Abia judiciary wanted to use the Tribunal complex for a certain activities that ought not to have interfered with the Tribunal time table; this time around the Guber Tribunal wasn’t running out of time again, the same Tribunal that denied APGA time extension.
To climax what could be described as an absurdity of legal proceedings, the Tribunal repeatedly used the word “re-run” against APGA while delivering it’s judgement, when it was obvious that no re-run took place in Abia.
The Tribunal in the most bizarre manner refused to align with APGA and her candidate in the case of Osisoma LGA where it was proven beyond reasonable doubt that the PDP L.G Collation agent and their House of Assembly candidate signed the results of the entire Ten Wards of the LGA instead of the Ward collation Agent as prescribed by the electoral act, the Tribunal did not just give their blessing on the grievous electoral crime, but also accepted the lies of the LGA and ward collation agents of PDP who were caught red handed lying under oath.
The over eighty thousand votes fraudulently allocated to PDP and her candidate is one result that should alarm any unbiased mind even without going through the details of the election considering the pattern of voting and election results in the last election across the country, let alone the LGA in question, Obingwa LGA.
As expected during the Tribunal proceedings, the result from Obingwa was exposed to the world as fake when a staff of INEC from Abuja appeared before the Tribunal and tendered a gazzetted INEC document in evidence which clearly contradicted and indicted the result earlier declared.
Unfortunately the same Tribunal that accepted and never disputed the content of the document ignored its undisputed facts while delivering its judgment.
In the case of Chief NnamdiIro Orji, the APGA candidate for Arochukwu/Ohafia constituency, the National Assembly Tribunal shocked everyone when it rejected the pink copies of the election results tendered by APGA showing the original results as earlier given by the INEC presiding officers before the fraudulaent results were announced by Senior INEC Officers in the State.
Again, in one of the INEC result sheets that bore a report written by the INEC Officer in charge, it clearly listed details of votes as scored by the individual political parties and clearly showed that APGA won in all the polling units of the areas in question. The INEC staff also detailed how some agents of the PDP came and snatched the result sheets, and subsequently entered fraudulently figures which contradicted the genuine results, as the scores in figure differed in words. She subsequently used asterisk to differentiate the fake result from the original, unfortunately, the Tribunal used her discretion in the most unfair manner to accept the ones marked as fake.
In another interesting case involving the APGA candidate for Aba North State Constituency in the Abia House of Assembly, the Tribunal said that it established a case of certificate forgery against the Aba candidate and thus nullified his election, ordered for fresh elections in some polling units, and subsequently barred APGA from taking part in the would be rerun election.
However, in what looked like a selective justice and bizarre contradiction, the same Tribunal established a case of double registration and forgery against the PDP candidate for Bende North State Constituency, but did not nullify his election on that basis, rather recommended him for trial in a regular court? Two pre-election election matters, two parties but different judgments.
There are other clear examples of miscarriage of justice involving the lower Tribunals that sat in Umuahia which cannot be listed here for want of space.
One is no trying to play the innocent here or cast aspersion on the judiciarybecause of avoidable inactions of some judicial officers, but some of these judgment are not only conspicuously questionable but clearly suggest that there was a huge compromise taken to the point of ridicule.
The appropriate authorities and institutions charged with the responsibility of ensuring justice and sanity in situations like this need to urgently look into what transpired in Abia so that a very dangerous precedent would not be set at the expense of the suffering masses.

Abia State: ASMDC begin clean-up of Ariara Market
Traders and patrons of Ariara International had cause to smile when they got to the market to see it wearing a new look after the massive clean-up exercise undertaken last weekend by the Abia State Markets Development Committee (ASMDC).
The ASMDC, a special purpose vehicle initiative of the Abia state governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu to restore sanity to all the markets in the state, mobilized contractors who moved into the market with more than 20 trucks to dig up and evacuate waste and, at the end of the exercise, the famous Faulks Road was opened up after it had been rendered impassable for over six months.
Sunday’s clean-up exercise, according to Chief Nwaigwe Solomon Nwaigwe who’s chairman of the committee, was undertaken as part of stop-gap measures to alleviate the suffering of the traders preparatory to when comprehensive over-haul of the total market infrastructure is commenced.
“Today’s exercise was concentrated in areas of distress where traders face the most difficulty. For instance, we cleared off the debris on Faulks Road and opened up that axis which has been impassable for the past six months due to flooding and waste. We are adopting a practical approach to the issue so that traders would suffer minimum discomfort and that informed why we decided to do this on a Sunday. There would be some form of inconvenience to some people but we crave their understanding because we’ll all benefit when the project is completed. We are not relenting until we restore our markets to their place of pride.”
Ariaria market, reputedly West Africa’s largest market, has suffered the menace of flooding occasioned by clogged waterways over the years and this had become a dent on the reputation of the market with customers opting to go elsewhere to transact their business.
Chief Lucky Akubueze, chairman of the Ariara Traders Association was full of praises for governor Ikpeazu for his determination to leave a lasting legacy and foresight in setting up the ASMDC which is changing things for better in Abia markets.
“I’m overjoyed for today’s exercise because I didn’t know we’ll see a day when this place will look this good. The governor is a man of his words and he’s already fulfilling all his promises to us when he came to ask for our votes. And I also specially commend the ASMDC under the chairmanship of chief Nwaigwe. It’s one thing to be given a task and it’s another thing to do it excellently beyond the call of duty. We are pleased with what they’ve done so far and confident that they’ll do much more,” he said.
The nine-man ASCMD was inaugurated on the 24th August, 2015 to, amongst other things, engage various stakeholders to remodel, upgrade and manage existing markets in the state for viable economic activities.
Mrs Obiageli Okeke, a trader in the market, also expressed happiness because the former condition of the market had adversely affected patronage and was a constant cause of health worries but with the turn-around, she’s hopeful of an upturn in economic activities for which she eulogized the ASMDC and governor Ikpeazu.

Abia 419 gang arrested
Members of a three-man gang in Aba, Abia State have been arrested by the Ngwa High School Forward Operation Base (FOB) under144 Battalion, Asa.
The suspects, who are specialized in swindling innocent visitors and residents of Aba, operated between Osisioma to Ariaria junction as sources disclosed that their targets were traders and individuals going to Ariaria International market Aba to shop, visitors who prefer boarding cab along the Aba – Port Harcourt Express than using the park.
It was also learnt that many traders who are always in a hurry to be in Ariaria have fallen victim and left heartbroken after they must have been swindled by this gang.
The gang members identified Udo Mba (aka Chief Udo Mba of Amavo-Ukwu), an indigene and traditional title holder in Amavo-Ukwu, Osisioma Local Government Area, Ifeanyi Enwereji of Obuda, Aba South Local Government and Philip Nwulu of Rivers State were allegedly apprehended when one of the female victims they swindled last month identified them and raised the alarm that alerted the people nearby who swiftly went after them.
The Nation learnt that the gang who were already waiting for their would be prey on sighting the girl drove off, but luck was said to have been against them when their Blue Coloured 504 Peugeot car with registration number Oyo State AA 851 EGB entered into a ditch on the expressway.
Sources said that by the time they could open their car to run away, the surging crowd caught up with them and were about lynching them when some soldiers came and prevailed on them.
They (gang members) were said to have been taken to the Ngwa High School FOB by the soldiers where they were being kept, though a source at the army base said that they would be handing them over to the police for further investigation.
The victim who simply gave her name as Miss Chidinma, a cosmetic dealer at the Umuahia main market narrating her ordeal to reporters said “It was about last month when I came to Aba to buy what I will sell in my shop from Ariaria International market. When our bus stopped at Osisioma junction, I entered their car because I was in a hurry and wanted to do my shopping fast so that I can go back to Umuahia early enough.
“I was inside the car when the driver drove off with a male passenger and later picked another woman on the road. I didn’t suspect anything. We got to a point where the woman brought out dollars.
“At a point I didn’t know what I was doing but I remembered that they said that I should give them money to buy chemical which they will use to produce more money. I declined but later told them that I have N15, 000 with me… After signing what an agreement that they will pay me back the money, the two male members left and the woman later left leaving me alone in a particular place that I can’t remember.
“I left without buying what I came to buy. And today when I came down from the bus that brought me to Aba at Osisioma junction, I saw them (gang) at the same place where I entered their car on that fateful day and immediately they saw me, they drove off but I started shouting and people who were around there went after them”.
A source at the area who commended the quick response of the Ngwa High School FOB however disclosed that the gang was already beaten to pulp by the angry mob who had gathered materials to execute jungle justice (setting them ablaze).
The suspects confessed to the alleged crime and promised to turn a new leaf if they were granted pardon.

APGA threatens to withdraw support for PDP
The national leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has condemned the attack on its candidates in Abia State and other parts of the South-East.
Recall that the governorship candidate of APGA in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, the Abia South Senatorial candidate, Sir Chris Nkwonta, and the National Chairman of the party, have been victims of attacks from their opponents, especially the ruling Peoples Democratic Party recently, an incident the National Publicity Secretary of APGA, Okwukwwe Ibiam, in a press conference described as not only unfortunate but condemnable and undemocratic.
Ibiam also expressed dissatisfaction over the abuse of their support by the PDP and warned that members of the PDP should not take their endorsement for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term in office, for granted.
The Publicity Secretary, who described the South-East as the stronghold of APGA, said “Common sense would have prevailed on the PDP, especially in the South-East that APGA’s goodwill and co-option of the PDP presidential candidate would have engendered a co-operative, coordinated APGA and PDP campaign on behalf of the Presidency on APGA’s turf”.
Ibiam regretted that despite their support for the candidacy of Jonathan, the PDP had paid them back badly even when they had rode on their support for Jonathan to penetrate the South-East.

Security personnel meet ahead of polls
In the run-up to the elections, the police, military and para-military organs have met in Aba, Abia State, to fine-tune strategies for a violence-free ballot, reports SUNNY NWANKWO
The Aba police have met with other security agents to strengthen ties and further seek ways of ensuring a credible ballot in the commercial nerve of the state.
The meeting chaired by the Aba Area Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Peter Wagbara deliberated mainly on building synergy among them as well as ensuring that elections in Aba and its environs would be successful.
Wagbara said that the postponement of the 2015 elections has given the police and other security agencies the opportunity to re-strategise to ensure violence-free polls on March 28 and April 11.
He was optimistic that with the opportunity the shift in dates provided and the new strategy being put in place, the 2015 polls would be more peaceful than the past ones even as he called on the residents of the city not to be afraid to come out and cast their votes for the candidates of their choice.
The Aba police boss stated that the Forum which involves the Police, Army, Nigerian Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Prisons Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and Nigerian Navy, meet frequently for better understanding, cooperation and collaboration as well as serve as an opportunity for security agencies to see themselves as one family.
He further urged the agencies to see the need to maintain security in their areas of authority and ensure that the forthcoming polls were violence-free.
Some of the personnel, including Maduako Emmanuel, Deputy Comptroller of Prisons in charge of Aba Prison, described the meeting as productive and one that has fostered a better relationship among the agencies in Aba and its environs, adding that it has helped them to spell out what each department has to do.
“The meeting has been effective; one thing it has done is that it has brought security agencies together and it has also made us to understand our roles as far as security is concerned. I suggest it should be continuous,” Madubuko said.
On their preparedness towards ensuring free, fair and credible elections, the Aba Prison boss said, “One thing you will know as civil servants particularly, the security agencies are not involved in partisan politics; our own is to ensure there is security.
“Some of our men will be properly involved in the election on that day; there are some people who had already been assigned to various parts of the city and within the prisons we need to ensure that there is security around it in case of any trouble.
“What we are going to tell our officers is to let them know what they are to do to maintain security on that day.”
