  • NANS canvasses Abians, students to re-elect Gov. Ikpeazu Okezie

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wish to commend the Governor of Abia State -Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on his giant achievements as the chief driver of Abia development in the last 4 years or thereabout.
There’s no gainsaying the fact that the Ikpeazu administration has touched positively on key sectors of the state from economy to education, enterprenuerialship to infrastructure, youth empowerment to exportation of goods and services.
As the National Patron of our noble association- NANS, we are proud to identify with His Excellency’s impact filled leadership and call on students and Abians in general to reward his selflessness and sacrifices throughout his first tenure with another four year term.
The governor has within the period under review turned Aba to the headquarter of SME, encouraging local producers of goods and services, infrastructural development, good educational policies, support for students and youth development.
We are specifically asking Abia students and youths to come out enmass and ensure the re-election of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
Many might ask what our interest in Abia is. Our singular interest is to promote the  candidature of Governor Ikpeazu regardless of his political leanings, he has shown considerable commitment to the revitalization of the education sector, identifies with the students and empowers the youths. Governor Ikpeazu no doubt is an exceptional leader whose love for and service to his people and adherence to the above mentioned expectations remained unquestionable.
Going forward, we believe that his re-election will engender massive development of Abia State and further improve the living conditions of her industrious people. We also have strong assurances that a greater attention will be paid to the education sector in his second coming hence our decision to throw our support behind his re-election having fulfilled his promises to the students constituency in this out-going tenure.
Abians should not be in a haste to change the winning team as led by this illustrious Okezie Ikpeazu.
We urge all students of voting age to come out and patriotically exercise their franchise on March 9, 2018.
We caution that students should desist from being used or dragged into subverting the electoral choice of the people and refrain from acts capable of either causing violence or spreading hate against the re-election of the popular Governor Ikpeazu.
Finally, let it be known to the few infidels that no amount of lies peddled by mischief makers or orchestrated propaganda against the Ikpeazu administration can make us abandon a man whose level of friendship and simplicity has become a parameter for judging leadership stability, mental capacity and responsiveness of Governor Ikpeazu.
We wish Governor Ikpeazu and the good people of Abia State a resounding victory on Saturday March 9, 2019.
  • Ohanaeze, others flay IPOB attacks on Ikpeazu, Umahi

Ohanaeze Youth Council and a coalition of Igbo groups on Monday condemned the verbal attacks on governors of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu and his Ebonyi State counterpart, David Umahi by members of the opposition parties and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

IPOB leader, Nnamdi KANU, had said in his recent broadcast that Abia and Ebonyi people should vote out Ikpeazu and Umah, claiming that they are sabotaging their agitation.

The groups described their actions as unacceptable and laughable.

National President of OYC, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, after their meetings in Abakaliki, said Kanu has derailed from his Biafra agitation and should not be listened to.

He urged Kanu to concentrate on the no-election campaign and leave Ikpeazu and Umahi alone to concentrate on their quest to reposition their different states.

In a statement, he said: “The coalition of Igbo groups; namely World Igbo Youth Congress, Southeast Women Professionals and Igbo Students Movement had met with the Forum of BibeingaAgitators and resolved that the attack was laughable.

“It is laughable that Kanu is derailing from his Biafra agitation and now being sponsored by politicians to cause confusion and pursuing campaign of calumny against those who mean well for him.”

The coalition expressed concern at the outburst, asking why the IPOB members did not register to obtain their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), despite that they were advised to do so.

Isiguzoro urged the IPOB to emulate the maturity and non-violence approach of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), led by Uchenna Madu.

It lauded the group, which had expressed willingness to allow INEC to conduct election in the southeast, and also ensure that there is no bloodshed during the ongoing Operation Python Dance111.

On Adams Oshiomhole’s allegations that Ikpeazu has been collecting bailout funds without paying salaries, it said: “We are shocked because our members who are Abia workers are paid as at when due, while no Abia or Ebonyi worker is being owed.”

“We unanimously state that zoning formula favours Ikpeazu and Umahi. The opposition parties in Abia and Ebonyi know that their candidates cannot win in these states, because there are no vacancies to be filled in the two Government Houses till 2023.

  • Atiku accuses Buhari, APC of using state resources, apparatuses for campaign

The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has accused President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of using state resources as apparatuses for electioneering campaign.

Describing the action as a violation of the nation’s electoral laws, Atiku said Buhari and the APC have been acting contrary to claims by the President that he would not use state resources for election.

In a statement Thursday by his media Adviser, Mr. Paul Ibe, the PDP presidential candidate called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction President Buhari and the APC for violating the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

The statement said, “Recall that the National Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu had in December of last year warned incumbent office holders against using state resources or apparatuses for their campaigns, or deploying same against their opponents.

“Prof. Yakubu, who issued the warning at a lecture titled “Political corruption and other emerging issues for the 2019 elections” in Abuja, noted that the commission has the power to monitor campaign financing and sources of funds according to the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

“However, in negation of the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, the Buhari administration and the APC has taken to the illegal deployment of state resources to its advantage for the election.

“We wish to remind President Buhari and the APC that the use of state videos released by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture is illegal under the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

“The media is awash with advertisements with the hashtag #PMBDIDIT and signed by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture and referencing so-called achievements of the APC administration in the states of Abia, Kwara, Lagos, Ebonyi, Delta and Kano, among others”.

These, Atiku said, were without doubt, 2019 presidential campaign materials produced by the Ministry of Information and Culture using state resources and apparatuses to benefit President Buhari.

“This appalling conduct, which is clearly in violation of Section 100 of the Electoral Act, is even more shocking when it is recalled that the state resources being used to the illegal advantage of President Buhari are being drawn from agencies which for over three years, prior to this election, failed to perform their duties to the benefit of Nigerian citizens. The Ministry of Information and Culture must stop this illegality immediately.

“We demand that INEC issues an immediate cease and desist order to both the Ministry of Information and Culture and to the broadcast channels running it.

“We also insist that INEC register the media spend behind it as part of the APC’s total N1 billion campaign spend limit.

“Fortunately, INEC is alert to this danger and itself warned the ruling party to refrain from such conduct. Now that the party has clearly flouted the law in negation of the electoral umpire’s warning, we urge that INEC sanctions them accordingly”.

  • APC frowns at destruction of campaign office in Abia

The Abia State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has cautioned the ruling party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against causing political anarchy in the state ahead of the forthcoming elections.

Abia APC stated this while reacting to the recent destruction of billboards of its candidate for Isiala Ngwa North and Isiala South Federal Constituency, Lady Blessing Uwaoma Nwokonneya and others across the state including burning of the campaign office Mascot Uzor-Kalu; APC candidate for Aba North and South federal constituency by hoodlums allegedly recruited for such job by the PDP in the state.

APC warned that it is dangerous to turn Abia into a war zone as elections approach.

Speaking to journalists in Aba, Abia APC Publicity Secretary; Comrade Benedict Godson said it was unfortunate that PDP in order to clamp down on opposition parties in the state has resorted to wanton mutilation and destruction of campaign billboards candidates of APC and other parties across the three senatorial districts of the state.

Godson went further to say that the destruction of billboards and burning of its candidate’s office is a sign that the PDP is jittery over the relevance that the party has gained in the state.

He said that his party is not weak to confront the PDP and retaliate on such matters, but stressed that turning Abia into a war zone is not ideal for kind of democracy his party under the Buhari led administration believes and preaches.

Godson urged the police and other sister security agencies to deal decisively with touts recruited to carry out such acts and apprehend their sponsors to avoid retaliation from those offended who may think the law is silent on evil.

He said that the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the act of trying to create violent atmosphere in a peaceful Abia through destruction other persons campaign billboards will go a long way in consoling those offended that no one is above the law.

In his words, “The PDP is really trying to throw Abia into serious violence. We are cautioning them to stop these provocative acts to avoid throwing our peaceful state into avoidable violence as elections draw closer.

“Destroying posters and billboards belonging to opposition parties is not part of democracy. It’s a sign of frustration and frustrated people don’t play free and fair games.

“They started these their evil acts sometime last year and have continued with it in this New Year by destroying billboards of Lady Blessing Uwoma Nwokonneya our House of Representatives candidate for Isiala Ngwa North and South Constituency.

“The PDP is frustrated that the people have rejected them. Their failure to work for Abians is beginning to hunt them down. Their bank of lies is empty as they have run short of lies to tell our people. They now see anyone from APC as their problem which is very ridiculous.

“If they know they have candidates that are marketable let them openly come out and paste their own posters and billboards instead of destroying ours. How can they hold a state ransom for many years and believe it will continue and people will accept them?

“We have the capacity to match them in anything, but if we create violence that may likely cost lives of fellow Abians, whom are we coming to govern or lead after the elections? These violent acts cannot stop us from beating them black and blue at the polls.”

Speaking further, Godson said: “On several occasions, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu have boasted and said that during campaigns, everyone should paste their posters on their works or projects, but we have been waiting for him to start such, but he can’t.

“He cannot start it because he has done absolutely nothing for four years! Where is he going to paste them? as a gentleman man, he has wholeheartedly accepted that he has done absolutely nothing in the state until recently when his errand boys decided to do otherwise.

“What are his posters doing in the streets of Aba, a city he left to decay? We urged him to remain truthful to himself and not be deceived to go about pasting posters anyhow on roads that are death traps and that experimental flyover projects being executed by Civil Engineering students on their Industrial Training at Osisioma.

“It’s obvious he has not done anything and we are pleading with him to caution his errand boys from disobeying his rule by pasting his posters on electric polls, peoples fences, church fences, school fences and other strategic places. They should respect him for it’s very wrong to do what ones master is against.”

Speaking on the fire incident at his campaign office, Mascot Kalu, Aba North and South federal constituency candidate of APC said

My campaign office at No. 19b Park road Aba after being vandalized, the hoodlums as fire to the building, but luckily we have some good neighbours, numbering over twenty who came out enmass to quench the fire.

“Our party and Nigerian flags at the campaign office were all destroyed. We had some posters of the President that we are about to start posting which was also burnt. Luckily, the building was saved by the neighbours.

“We are running an election. No individual blood is worth the fight of the election that we are fighting. I will not spill any blood to win.

“But again, I believe that their desperate act shows that we are doing something that is right. We are getting them jittery. They are afraid of us and we will conquer at the end of the day.

“Nobody should be afraid. We are equal to the task, we are equal to the task and we are not shaking by all these actions. My convoy was going to buy fuel and it was also attacked on its way. This election will be won free and fair at the grounds of the election. There is nothing that they will do that will deter us.

“We have reported the matter to the police and other security agencies. They should do their investigation and do the proper arrest and prosecution of persons that they found wanted.”
