    Ajimobi: opposition behind Ibadan attacks

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has vowed to stop opposition politicians who he accused of foisting violence on some communities in Ibadan, the state capital.

The governor alleged that opposition politicians were behind the violence in the city, saying that it was meant to discredit his administration which has successfully enthroned peace since 2011.

He vowed to stop them while addressing a crowd of supporters and fun seekers at the opening of Agodi Gardens, Ibadan. Ajimobi said he would not allow violence again in Oyo state.

“The bad guys of yesterday are back trying to bring back violence because election is near. But we won’t allow violence again. There is a definite connection between a peaceful, clean environment, healthy people and influx of investors. This Agodi Gardens is a good example. This is a world-class recreational centre.”

The Chairman of the partnering firm, JD Capital, Makin Soyinka, said his firm accepted to work with the government based on Ajimobi’s vision to restore the state’s old glory and monuments of which Agodi Garden is one.

The lighting of the Christmas tree in the gardens was performed by legal luminary Mrs. Folake Solanke.

Ajimobi said his administration was motivated into reconstructing the Gardens in view of its long years of neglect.

“Agodi Gardens was in a sorry state when we first visited the place. It was desolate and empty. Everything was very bad. It had deteriorated so much and it was very shameful to us in Oyo State,’’ he said.

Ajimobi, Mukthar, Alege condemn Ekiti impasse

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi; former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) President, Austin Alege, have condemned the spate of impeachment of speakers by minority lawmakers.

They said it was a bad omen for the nation’s democracy.

The personalities, who spoke at the 60th anniversary of the Ibadan Bar, frowned at the “impeachment” of the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin, by minority members.

Justice Mukhtar, who was represented by Justice Ogwuta Nwali, described the development as an affront on the constitution.

Alege decried police invasion of the National Assembly and the locking out of the members of the House of Representatives.

He said such an act was an unnecessary interference in the activities of the legislature.

The NBA President took a swipe at the lawmakers for scaling the fence.

Ajimobi said there was the need for politicians to abide by the rules of the game in the interest of Nigerians.

The governor condemned the use of the military during elections, saying this was unknown in the history of democracy all over the world.

“As a governor sworn to an oath of allegiance to uphold the constitution, I bear a responsibility to respect the law and the constitution and to express my displeasure whenever the law or the constitution is being violated.

“This is a duty that every citizen must not shy away from, if we want this democracy to endure and thrive.

“The Ibadan Bar has come a long way with unparallel achievements in the advocacy of respect for human rights, good governance and corruption-free society.

“It is against this background that I wish to state that this Bar cannot afford to keep aloof in the face of numerous challenges bedeviling our nation.

“Loss of life and property to insurgency must not elude the attention of this Bar. Rape on democracy and democratic norms are issues that the Ibadan Bar must lspeak against in the polity.’’

APC screening committee clears Amosun, Ajimobi

The National Screening Committee for governorship aspirants (Southwest) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his Oyo State counterpart, Abiola Ajimobi, as the party’s candidates in next year’s governorship election.

Chairman of the Committee and former Gombe State Governor Danjuma Goje said only Ogun has one candidate in the Southwest.

“We have just concluded screening and sale of forms. Governor Amosun is the only candidate from Ogun State. I want to praise him for the good works he is doing for our party, the people and his various strides since he assumed office. God will help our party to effect the needed change in this country,” he said.

Amosun said his administration was committed to the party’s programme, including employment generation, urban renewal, qualitative education, among others.

“APC will truly make the difference in Nigeria and will be victorious in the presidential election,” he added.

Ajimobi said his administration’s area of concentration in the next dispensation would be to focus more on the people’s welfare.

“We will focus more on the welfare of the people. We will not relent in ensuring that our people feel the impact of our administration positively to ensure that they have opportunity to be the best they can be,” he said.

He lauded the effort of the committee members, saying “it gives me joy that we have a party that does things democratically. Though, I have other aspirants contending with me, I am very optimistic that I will become the APC candidate and will win the election,” he said.

    Ajimobi: we’ll arrest perpetrator

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has warned that he would not allow anyone to jeopardise the peace in the state.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Festus Adedayo, the governor said the trend of orchestrated violence in the state points to desperation by some politicians to destroy the government’s performance.

He said the Friday violence, where a policeman was shot and some others injured in Oke Ado, was a calculated attempt to “pollute the river of peace” in the state.

Ajimobi said the Friday violence, where a policeman was shot and some other people were injured in Oke Ado, was a calculated attempt to “pollute the river of peace” in the state.

He said the violence at Popoyemoja two days later where some thugs unleashed mayhem on residents could not be divorced from the bitter politics of the past and an attempt to destroy the image of the government.

“Our people are not fooled. We have received high-profiled information that this sporadic violence was not an accident.

“In the last three and half years, we have demonstrated to our people that ours is a government that cannot stand thugs and hooligans. Those who know us can testify that we have zero tolerance for violence and we are not about to renege on this.

“We believe that only peace can bring development. This has worked because in the last few years, investments have started pouring into Oyo State.

“Let me warn perpetrators of violence and their masterminds that an end has come to their foray in Oyo. No matter how highly placed they may be, we will smoke them out of our state.”

    Council boss hails Ajimobi

The Caretaker Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Ladi Oluokun, has said Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s  projects have qualified him for a second term.

Oluokun spoke at the governor’s meet-the-people tour at the council secretariat on Iwo Road, where he was received by thousands of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters and well wishers.

The council boss said the people appreciated Ajimobi’s contributions to make the state a pacesetter.

He advised APC members to be united, steadfast and to avoid factions within the party to enable them achieve their aims.

Oluokun said the state was in quandary before the governor’s emergence in 2011.

“The leadership qualities of Senator Ajimobi could not be overlooked as he has re-vamped the state’s economy to an enviable position.

“He had also assisted rural communities in their self-help projects through provision of rural agro industrial equipment, such as palm oil and cassava machines.”

    Ajimobi: capital importation has increased

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has said capital importation into the state had increased by 697 per cent, approximating $3.49 million, up from $500,000 between the first and second quarter in the year.

He said this yesterday when he met with leaders and traditional chiefs from Ibadan North East Local Government Area, as part of his tour of the 33 local governments.

The governor said this figure has made nonsense of allegations from the opposition that the state was witnessing capital flight since the inception of the administration.

Ajimobi said he was quoting from a report by the National Bureau of Statistics.

“As revealed in the report, total capital imported into the country stood at $5.8 billion as at the end of the second quarter of 2014, relative to the $3.9 billion recorded in the preceding quarter.

“Of these, the Southwest  was the top destination for capital importation in the first half of 2014.”

The governor said his mission in governance was to redeem the state from  underdevelopment.

“I am not a desperate politician, who is out to canvass for votes by all means. My mission is to redeem the state from under-development and deceitful politicians,’’ he said.

  • Ajimobi: we may enlarge Oyo Council of Chiefs

Ajimobi: we may enlarge Oyo Council of Chiefs

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has said his administration may increase the membership of the state’s Council of Obas and Chiefs.

He said this at a town hall meeting in Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan yesterday.

The governor is on a four-day tour of the 11 local governments in Ibadan.

Ajimobi said the issue of the council was a sensitive one given the calibre of its leaders, historical foundation and the crisis rocking its leadership.

He said his administration chose not to dabble into it in order to allow peace reign and also allow council members and their subjects to live together peacefully.

According to him, his administration could, however, look into the possibility of increasing membership of the council to accommodate new chiefs. He said such power lies in the government’s hands.

The Oniroko of Iroko, Abioye Olasunkanmi, who spoke on behalf of traditional chiefs in the local government, had made the request for inclusion of more chiefs, citing historical reasons.

Olasunkanmi praised Ajimobi for his achievements, saying as a retired teacher, he has not witnessed the recruitment of 5,300 teachers at once.

He said: “Without campaigning, your achievements are speaking for you.

“You have made the welfare of teachers a priority; your infrastructural development policy is unparalleled. I urge you not to rest on your oars.

”We’ll continue to pray for you to succeed because we know you are working for us.

“Your detractors will only continue to grumble because they couldn’t do all that you are doing.

“Carry on your good works. Don’t be discouraged. We’re behind you and we’ll show you how much in 2015, when we will vote.”

The governor said the idea of recruiting teachers from their localities was to stop mass transfers of teachers from one location to another due to lopsidedness in recruitment process.

Ajimobi prided himself as sustaining the rich history of the “firsts” established by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo by undertaking “first” projects in the history of the state.

He was accompanied by Deputy Governor Moses Alake-Adeyemo; Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Olalekan Ali; commissioners and All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders were received by a tumultuous crowd at the venue of the meeting.

    Oyo compensates 235 landlords

OYO State Governor Abiola Ajimobi distributed yesterday cheques to the first batch of 235 people whose properties were affected by the dualisation of roads in Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oyo and Iseyin.

The governor, at the presentation in Ibadan, said the compensation was an attestation to his administration’s determination to ensure that the affected people were not denied their rights.

Represented by the Commissioner for Lands, Isaac Omodewu, the governor reiterated his administration’s determination to ameliorate the pains caused by the expansion of roads.

He said all genuine claimants with documents that had been duly verified would receive their compensation in subsequent phases.

“The government considered it necessary to compensate the citizens who, through their votes, made the existence of our administration possible.

“Let me note that our great party, All Progressives Congress (APC), has set a record. Without mincing words, our expansionist programme has given birth in several forms to infrastructural development evident across the state,’’ Ajimobi said.

Some of the beneficiaries, Madam Rafatu Odunola, Adeyinka Oluwafemi and Biliaminu Kareem, praised the governor for fulfilling his promise.

  • ‘Why Oyo North youths are behind Ajimobi’

‘Why Oyo North youths are behind Ajimobi’

Hon. Salihi Dauda Ajana is the Oyo North Senatorial District youth leader of the All Progressives Congress. In this interview with JEREMIAH OKE, he bares his mind on the re-election bid of  Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Do you think Governor Abiola Ajimobi has done enough to remain in power beyond 2015?

He has done more than enough to deserve a second time. Apart from Ibadan, Oyo and Ibarapa, where various developmental projects have been completed while some are still on-going, my zone, that is Oyo North, has benefited from this administration more than his predecessors. The dualisation projects in Ogbomoso and Iseyin are there for people to see. It has never happened in the history of this state. The satelite campus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan in Saki has been upgraded to a full-fledged polytechnic. It now gives us a sense of belonging as it has been re-named Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki. We now have a satelite campus of the Oyo State School of Nursing, Eleiyele, Ibadan at Kisi area of Irepo Local Government. After the era of the late Lam-Adesina, the eight-years before Governor Ajimobi became governor was disastrous for us in Oyo North and other parts of Oyo State.

What the PDP’s eight-year rule in Oyo State gave us in Oyo North was violence, making our zone to be battle-field. Apart from the deputy governor and the ALGON chairman, who are from this senatorial district, I make bold to say that we have up to seven commissioners in this administration. Added to this are several political appointees like Special Advisers, Senior Special Advisers, Special Assistants, and chairmen of boards and parastatals. When the PDP was in power, most of those who were appointed into political offices were unknown; those who couldn’t connect their people. Governor Ajimobi, on the other hand, has given us people who are closer to the grassroots; people who know our problems.

Currently, the governor has started another dualisation in Saki, which runs from the Polytechnic Road and terminates at Ibaruba. The dualisation of Igboho-Igbope/Kisi Road will start any moment from now as the contract has been given due attention. The two previous administration cannot boast of anything as their achievement in Oyo North, especially in Oke-Ogun where I come from.

For four years, nomalcy has returned to our senatorial district. And that is why the youths in this senatorial district will not hesitate to support the re-election of Governor Ajimobi.

Despite all you’ve listed as the achievements of Governor Ajimobi in your senatorial district and Oyo State in general, some people are still saying that he has not done anything. How do you react to this?

It’s a pure lie. Nothing but propaganda from mischievous people; people who are jittery about the achievements of this administration ,which have culminated into his acceptance and endorsements by those who matter in the scheme of things in Oyo State. And, if you check the quarters where these lies are coming, you will notice that they are politicians of yesterday’s stocks; those who should cover their faces in shame for misgovernance while they held sway. They are useless politically and morally.

As a youth leader, do you think the governor has done enough in the area of youth empowerment?

You need not ask me about this. In the history of this state, he is the first to appoint the highest number of youth as aides. Contrary to the lie that former Governor Rashidi Ladoja employed the highest number of workers, I’ve found out that 90 per cent of those employed were teachers while other sectors were neglected. The employment done by this administration cuts across all ministries and professions and, for your information, it is the highest in the history of this state. Added to this is the employment of 20, 000 people into the Youth Empowerment Scheme of Oyo State (YES-O). I always laugh when some people say they are being paid a meagre N10, 000. Have they bothered to multiply that amount with the number of those employed. Roughly, that gives N20m monthly. If the previous administration has done something similiar, this administration would have raised the bar and crimes would have reduced in our State before Governor Ajimobi came on board.

If it were to be in the PDP, where I was before 2010, cutlasses and other dangerous objects would have been distributed as party primaries and general elections are fast approaching. It is the opposite in the APC.

There are crises amongAPC members in some local governments. Don’t you think it may serve as a setback for the party?

Well, there is no party that is free from crisis. But, it must be properly managed. And I must tell you, the APC is stronger and united than before. We cannot avoid crisis in such a big party like ours. The crisis in the opposition is more than what they can resolve in the next six months.

When I met the governor few days ago, I assured him of my colleagues’ support for his re-election and he has promised to empower us with mobility; to equip us for the  election.

As next year’s elections draw near, what do you forsee?

To be candid, President Goodluck Jonathan should start preparing his handover note. He is not coming back because people are fed up more than before. Even his people are biting their fingers. And, if you were at the Liberation Stadium, Port-Harcourt, venue of the Rivers APC rally, you will see that the yearning for change is daily receiving boosts, even from the President’s backyard. We cannot afford to vote him again.

Ajimobi distributes offer letters to teachers

The distribution of employment letters to thousands of newly recruited teachers from Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola and Iseyin local governments of Oyo State continued yesterday.

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains, monarchs, stakeholders praised Governor Abiola Ajimobi for the gesture.

Ajimobi, who arrived in Iseyin at 1pm, received a triumphant entry, as thousands of students, party members, chieftains, workers trooped out to welcome him.

Speaking at the palace of Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Adekunle Salau, the governor said the recruitment of 5,300 teachers by his administration was unprecedented in the state.

He said the exercise was part of government’s efforts to improve the standard of education and provide jobs for the youth.

The governor said over 31,000 teachers had been sent on  training to improve their productivity; adding that 24,000 teachers had been promoted.

An APC chieftain from Itesiwaju Local Government, Niyi Adeagbo, said Ajimobi was a shining light, a beacon of hope that Nigeria could get it right with the right leadership.

“If he can do so much with very lean resources, it can be deduced that the problem of the nation is not about availability of resources, but misapplication and mismanagement.”

The monarch said: “You have done well. I pray that God will grant you your heart desire. Your dream and ambitions will come true.

“I also pray that these buses procured for your campaign will not be involved in any accident.”
