    Ajimobi approves teachers’ promotion

Oyo State has approved the outstanding promotion of teachers in all its public primary and secondary schools.

The state Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr. Kolawole Kayode, said this in an interaction with reporters yesterday.

He spoke after a meeting with Governor Abiola Ajimobi in Ibadan.

The NUT chairman said the teachers’ promotion for 2010 and 2011 will take effect from September 1, this year.

He added that promotion letters for the affected teachers would be issued to them immediately.

He said the governor had given a directive to the state Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to ensure speedy implementation of the promotion exercise.

Kayode added that the government had approved carrier elongation for primary school teachers, who have additional degree qualification with the National Certificate in Education (NCE), from Grade Level 14 to Grade Level 15.

He said Ajimobi expressed displeasure over the stagnation of the affected teachers, all of whom were university graduates, on GL 14 for years, directing that they should be moved to GL 15 with immediate effect.

The union’s Secretary, Mr. Waheed Olojede, said the governor had approved payment of outstanding planning grants to secondary school principals and primary school head teachers.

He added that grants for primary schools had been increased from N20 to N40 per pupil.

He also said that the state government had approved that the appointment of teachers be gazetted.

This, he said, would alleviate the stress of retiring teachers travelling to their last places of assignment to collate their records of service at the point of retirement.

Olojede pledged teachers’ loyalty and support for the Ajimobi administration.

He assured the governor that the teachers would reciprocate the “government’s gesture through dedication, hard work and commitment to their duties.”

Ajimobi deplores over voter registration, PVC exercise in Oy

Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has expressed concern over the various anomalies and irregularities that has characterised the ongoing voters’ registration exercise and the collection of Permanent Voters Card (PVC) in the State.

The governor stated on Saturday while briefing journalists shortly after he held a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the State, Alhaji Nasiru Ayilara, at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ibadan, the state capital.

He alleged that the registration machines brought by the Commission for the exercise were inadequate to meet the requirements of voters who are eager to collect their PVCs and those who want to register as prospective fresh voters.

He said: “The purpose of this visit is to express our concern to INEC regarding the ongoing PVC collection, as well as the new voter registration exercise. We found that in many of the areas particularly in Ibadan axis, that the machines they brought are inadequate to meet the requirements of the voters who are either collecting their PVCs or those that want to newly register. We have expressed this concern to INEC and we have been assured that necessary steps would be taken to correct these anomalies.”

The governor assured the people of the State that nobody would be disenfranchised adding, “With the assurances I have received from the REC, I have no doubt in my mind that every eligible voter in the State would be registered.”

He also explained that the REC informed him that he had received approval to commence the second phase of the exercise to enable the people to collect their PVCs and also register accordingly.

He urged the people not to be discouraged by the various anomalies, stressing that registration of voters and collection of permanent voters’ card would be a continuous exercise.

In his reaction, the REC, Alhaji Nasiru Ayilara assured that INEC has put in place necessary arrangement to address all the anomalies, noting that where the machines deployed for the exercise are not working well, the technical crew of the commission has been directed to remedy the situation.

  • Open letter to Governor Ajimobi

SIR: I will like to express my sympathy for the loss of properties caused by the recent fire disaster at Aleshinloye Market, Ibadan. A visit to the site confirmed a complete destruction that nothing could be retrieved. The loss was extensive. My concern is the promise by the Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi to compensate shop-owners for their losses. I hope this is not a political competition for space against an earlier promise by a prospective governorship candidate. Governance should be taken away from this pettiness.

Fortunately, the fire disaster occurred at the frontal section of the market facing the newly constructed dual carriage way. The site should be completely cleared and rebuilt by the precast modular building construction system. This system is faster and could readily be available within 60 to 90 days since the precast elements of the building are done away from the site. For maximal utilization of the site, it should be of two or three floors with the assurance that affected traders and shop-owners would be given first choice of resettlement at the constructed shops. With proper management, the entire market can be re-built in phases with adequate access roads and other infrastructural facilities.

The governor’s sympathy site visits; immediate and after are in order but something durable and of lasting legacy should replace the burnt section of the market. The modernization of the Ibadan Metropolis by the governor is not only commendable but a memorable legacy of urban-renewal which now qualifies Ibadan for a State. Governance takes boldness and this is a suggestion from one of those who want you to succeed.

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has urged politicians in the state to embrace politics of intellectualism, development and poverty alleviation instead of brigandage, character assassination and name-calling.

The governor spoke yesterday after the Eid-el-Fitri prayer at the Agodi Prayer Ground, Ibadan, the state capital.

The governor advised the residents to accommodate one another, irrespective of their religious, political or ethnic differences.

Ajimobi promises to consider traditionalists Ajimobi promises to consider traditionalists

Oyo State Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi has promised to consider the interest of the traditional religion worshippers.

He said traditional religion was inherited “from our ancestors and it must not be neglected.”

The governor, who spoke while receiving traditional religion delegates in Ibadan, said he is ready to work with every indigene irrespective of religion.

He added: “Your demands have been noted. Your representatives and the government will soon meet to agree on the issues raised and how to implement your demands. I promise to carry you along in government’s activities.”

The traditionalists petitioned the government, condemning their non-inclusion in the state’s activities.

In a seven-page protest, titled: “The Plight of Traditional Religion In Oyo State”, the group frowned at what it termed neglect, relegation, discrimination, denigration and blasphemy of its religion.

The statement, signed by the Araba of Ibadanland, High Chief Priest Oyewusi Amoo Fakayode, urged the Ajimobi administration to borrow a leaf from the Aregbesola administration in Osun State by recognising traditional religion.

    •Gets Alaafin’s support

OYO State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has urged politicians to be decorous and decent in order to ensure a successful election next year.

Ajimobi spoke while receiving a delegation of the Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), that visited him yesterday at the Government House in Ibadan, the state capital.

He said since the objective of any party is to promote development and the welfare of the people, there should be no bitterness among politicians.

Developmental politics, he said, should be the aim of every politician, stressing that good legacy should be the main objective to be pursued.

Praising the council’s initiative in creating a platform for interaction among parties, Ajimobi urged its members to ensure that such interface is geared towards providing good governance for the people.

He advised the council to guide against internal wrangling and selfish interest, which are capable of jeopardising its good intention of enthroning a better society.

“To me, politics should be played without rancour and animosity. There is no need fighting one other. We should be brothers and sisters. Basically, this council is a platform to create an enabling environment for good governance, ensure sustenance of descent democratic practices and cordial relationship to promote  the public interest.

“We must work towards ensuring that the best always win and so, we must support the best. It is not how long, but the legacy we are leaving behind,” he said.

Earlier,  IPAC leader, Chief Sam Eke, said the council’s membership is drawn from all parties.

He said the council was formed not to antagonise any  governor, but to cooperate with the government to move the country forward.

Meanwhile, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, has restated his support for Ajimobi’s administration.

Oba Adeyemi spoke when  a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, Seyi Makinde visited him.

The monarch said his support for Ajimobi is absolute, adding: “It is unthinkable and senseless for anyone to start casting an aspersion and peddling devilish rumours that Alaafin has endorsed another candidate as governor for 2015 in the state because of politician’s visits to the palace since the death of Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Arisekola-Alao. For proper education to the feeble minds, the palace is open to everybody, including all sons and daughters of the Alaafin across the Yoruba nation and beyond, irrespective of political and religious backgrounds.”

Alaafin said he enjoys cordial relationship with Ajimobi, adding  he and his subjects would continue to give unflinching support to administration.

Earlier, Makinde, who said his visit had nothing to do with politics but to sympathise with the monarch, described the late  Arisekola-Alao as a bridge-builder and rallying point whose death would greatly affect Oyo’s political landscape.

The State Executive Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its Chairman, Gbenga Opadotun, visited the monarch.

Opadotun said considering the generosity of the late Arisekola-Alao,  his death might be the “end of philanthropy in Yoruba-land.”

    Ajimobi orders reconstruction of bridge

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has ordered the reconstruction of Isuwin Bridge in Atiba Local Government Area.

The bridge, which runs across Isunwin River at Koso, is about to collapse.

It is an alternative route to Oyo/Ogbomoso.

Residents have turned the river into a dump site, obstructing its free flow.

Koso and Oroki are always flooded whenever it rains and the river overflows.

When the Local Government Caretaker Chairman Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi inspected the bridge yesterday, he said the governor had directed that the bridge’s reconstruction should begin immediately.

Adeniyi said: “The Works Department has also been directed to embark on immediate dredging of the river and other spots threatened by erosion. We will enlighten residents on the danger of dumping refuse in the river.”

He was accompanied by members of the Oyo Traditional Council (Oyo Mesi), led by the Basorun of Oyo, Chief Ayoola Layinka 1, and the local government’s Director of Works, Yussuf Abiona.

Adeyemi thanked Ajimobi for responding promptly to the people’ plight, urging residents and road users to cooperate with the contractor when work begins on the bridge.

Speaking for residents, Mr. Akinrogun Segun Taiwo thanked the governor and the Alaafin of Oyo for their concern.

Adeyemi, who earlier inaugurated a bridge at Odo-Jide River, inspected some ongoing projects in the council.
