  • Oyo holds emergency security summit to prevent bank robberies

Following the increasing state of bank robbery and attacks on bank facilities across in its neighbouring states, Oyo State government on Tuesday summoned all security chiefs in the state to an emergency security meeting.

The meeting, attended by heads of security agencies in the state, bankers from various financial institutions, and other relevant stakeholders, held at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Security stakeholders at the meeting included the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force,  Nigeria Police, Department of State Security  (DSS), National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Oyo State Security Trust Fund, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps  (NSCDC), and bankers.

The meeting was said to be to strengthen the security architecture and apparatus in the state with a view to preventing robbery attacks on banks and other financial institutions across the state.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi, while declaring the meeting open said the meeting was convened based on his vision and mission to ensuring a crime-free State.

The governor was represented by his deputy, Otunba Moses Adeyemo at the meeting which was also attended by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Olalekan All, Ajimobi’s Special Adviser on Security Mr. Segun Abolarinwa and other top government functionaries.

Ajimobi who boasted that there has not been any successful bank robbery incident in the state since his emergence as the governor on May 29, 2011, noted that his administration is keen on keeping and maintain the status quo.

He said, “This meeting has been convened in reaction to an observation of a noticeable increase in the activities of criminals in neighboring states, especially attacks on our banks. In line with these observations, the State Government believes that an anticipatory approach is needed to counter/forestall any such happenings in Oyo State.

“The state is ready to continue to support all security agencies present in Oyo State to achieve their primary functions. This is in the realization of the fact that it is only where there is peace that development can occur and the main goal of this administration is to better the lot of its citizenry. I once emphasized at a previous occasion that the entrenchment of a peaceful atmosphere has thus given room for all the developmental projects which we have been able to implement.”

“It is a common knowledge that before the inception of this administration in 2011, insecurity in form of armed robberies, arson and other violent crimes as well as lawlessness from the nefarious activities of ‘area boys’ had been the order of the day.

“The prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the state has been the result of the zero tolerance for crime by this administration and also through the commitment of the State Government to combating crime through steps such as the establishment of Oyo State Joint Security Patrol Squad code named ‘Operation Burst’ as well as the setting up of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund.”

Ajimobi stated further that the monthly state security council meeting has also allowed for a robust review of the activities of all the security agencies in keeping the state abreast of all challenges.

“For the furtherance of our agenda on safety and security, we embraced the safe city project, which utilises cutting edge technology solutions to nip crime and criminality in the bud. I can confirm that the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) in black spots and business districts in the city to monitor the activities of criminals has been completed and is now operational,” Ajimobi said.

He enjoined all the stakeholders at the security meeting to support the government and work together during the “festive season and upcoming election period to enable us to continue to provide an investor friendly environment that will increase the economic profile of the state. You have all been a part of our success story in this regard”, he added.

  • Ajimobi makes case for vocational, technical trainings for youths

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state has called for the strengthening of vocational and technical education in Nigeria as a way of checking what he described as “the paucity of skilled artisans” in the country.

He made the advocate in Ibadan on Monday while playing host  the participants of the Senior Course (SC) 41 of the Armed Forces Command and State College (AFCSC), Jaji, Kaduna State, who were on a study tour of the state from November 25 to December 1, 2018.

The visitors whose tour was entitled: “Nigeria’s Educational System and National Development”, were received at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Ajimobi also used the opportunity of the visit to call for improved funding of education with emphasis on the recommendations by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and other developmental agencies on funding for education.

Harping on its importance, Governor Ajimobi noted that the poor attitude to vocational and technical education and emphasis on certificates and white-collar jobs have led to a situation whereby skilled artisans would have to be imported from neighbouring countries such as Republic of Togo among others for building construction and tiling jobs.

Represented by his deputy, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, Governor Ajimobi said, “We are not so deep in technical education. Nowadays, if you want to do building construction, you have to go to Republic of Togo to get these artisans and the rest of them. Our people are no longer interested in technical and vocational education.

“This is the time we have to talk about educational development. You will all agree with me that we have a lot of problems in our educational system in Nigeria. We have strikes plaguing our educational system, especially at the tertiary level.

“When you compare the quality of people we are producing in our universities today with graduates of our time many years ago, the quality has reduced greatly. Hardly can all the graduates of today speak correct English for two minutes without missing their tenses. This is the kind of system we have now.

“Apart from the quality, the incessant strikes in different tertiary institutions are what you need to look at and proffer solution. When you go to a private university, it is sure that the student will graduate within four years, if it is a four-year course. This does not happen in public universities and other public tertiary institutions. As researchers, look at the challenges and come out with recommendations.

“Another area we have to look at is this,  UNESCO has given a percentage of amount we have to use in funding education in Nigeria. Are we following that particular advice of UNESCO and other development agencies? Funding is very poor, not only by the Federal Government, even at the state level.

“You will all agree with me that education is the bedrock of development. Anything you want to achieve in this world, if education is not there, you can’t achieve any meaningful thing. We have to look at what we can do.

“There is indiscipline in our school. Students indulge in cultism. Lecturers are no longer safe in the hands of students.  These are some of the factors that have retarded the growth of education in this nation. As researchers, look into the issues and come out with recommendations on way forward.

“We have to look at these and see what we can do. It is when we have all these available to us that Nigeria can develop. We should lay less emphasis on getting certificates alone. Technical and vocational education will lift present development in Nigeria.”

The Acting team lead of the group, Lt. Col Ifeanyi Ajimuka, said the tour is taking place at the same time in some selected states of the federation, adding that the research to be conducted, based on the theme of the study would proffer workable solution to identified problems relating to education in Oyo State.

He further noted that the tour constitutes a major aspect of the geo-strategic curriculum of the AFCSC Senior Course 41, who are currently undergoing a one-year mid-career training in the college, which will afford them the opportunity of conducting on-the-spot research in Oyo State.

“This team is one of the nine teams currently on tour of selected states of the federation as part of this year’s Armed Forces Command and Staff College Nigerian Environmental Study Tour for students of Senior Course 41. The states concurrently being visited across the country are Delta, Federal Capital Territory, Abia, Kwara, Imo, Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and our amiable state, Oyo.

“This group is composed of 26 members, comprising administrative and directing staff of AFCSC, Jaji. At the end of the tour, the students will return to the college, analyse the data obtained, deliberate on their findings and make recommendations. Thereafter, the students will present their reports to the entire college community on Monday January 14, 2019″

  • Ajimobi grants amnesty to 15 prisoners

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has granted amnesty at differing levels to 15 various offenders currently serving prison sentences at different prisons in the state.

The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Oluseun Abimbola said in Ibadan on Tuesday that 11 convicts will enjoy either outright release, or reduction in sentence terms, while four persons had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment.

Abimbola explained that the Governor, in exercise of his powers under section 212 of the 1999 constitution granted the amnesty on the recommendation of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy headed by the Attorney General, as part of the events commemorating the celebration of Nigeria’s 58th year independence anniversary.

The Attorney General appreciated the kind gesture of the governor in granting the amnesty, stating that it is the hope and expectation of the State government that those to be released would by reason of the good behavior that qualified them for consideration for amnesty, reciprocate with continuing good behaviour as they reintegrate into society.

“We expect them to transform to become upstanding members of society, as they would have learnt useful lessons from their time of incarceration to know that crime does not pay.

“The exercise of the prerogative of mercy by the governor is a constitutional exercise carefully and responsibly reviewed to ensure the exercise retains its credibility,” Mr. Abimbola added.

  • Ajimobi tackles Akala over boycott of Oyo APC governorship primary

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has described as ‘unsubstantiated’ the allegation by his predecessor and a governorship aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adebayo Alao-Akala, that he has chosen to impose Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe in today’s (Sunday) primary.

Eight aspirants are jostling to succeed Ajimobi in the party.

In a statement by his media aide, Jeremiah Akande on Saturday, Alao-Akala announced his boycott of the election and directed his supporters to do the same.

The primary is scheduled to hold on Sunday in Ibadan, the state capital.

Alao-Akala, in the statement, alleged that Ajimobi had sent words round to coerce and intimidate delegates into voting for Tegbe today.

He, therefore, called on the national leadership of the party to come to the rescue of the party which he said was heading towards collapse.

The statement read in part: “His Excellency, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, a true party man and committed loyalist to any cause he believes in, wishes to state categorically that he is not a push-over in the game of politics and as a well-grounded and groomed politician who has occupied the number one seat of a politically conscious state as Oyo State will not be part of any move or attempt to subvert the true will and wish of the people by the selfish interest of an Individual.\

“The general public should also note that Gov. Abiola Ajimobi has clandestinely offered Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala the ministerial slot of Oyo State in an attempt to pitch him against Barr. Adebayo Shittu, an offer he has rejected in its entirety as he is not one to be tailored or shown the way round in the game of politics.”

But Ajimobi’s spokesman, Mr Bolaji Tunji, described the allegation as unsubstantiated, stressing that the governor has thoroughly demonstrated that he has no preference for any aspirant. Tunji reminded Alao-Akala, who he described as a respected politicians and who has played a good role in fostering unity in the party, that Ajimobi once met the aspirants and advised them to pick a few among them that will go into the primary.

Tunji, who is the Special Adviser to Governor Ajimobi on Communication and Strategy, explained that the governor has emphasized severally at the meeting that he has not anointed any of them. He added that the aspirants, who were originally up to 26, did not get back to the governor on those they have chosen to participate in the primary.

Tunji said it is not uncommon for aspirants to come up with excuses and unsubstantiated allegations when it becomes clear to them that they may not win an election.

  • 2019 Polls: Abdulsalami warns against Nigeria’s disintegration

Former Head of state,  Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, on Friday said he will forever be an enemy of anyone that tried to hinder the democratic development of Nigeria or plunge Nigeria into crisis.

Abdualsaslami said this at the Maiden Edition of General Abdulsalami Abubakar Foundation Peace Lecture, organised by the staff and students of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Post Graduate Students’ Hall of the University of Ibadan. The lecture was titled; “Collaborative Peace Building in Nigeria,”

He cautioned politicians against disrupting the 2019 general elections, saying “we have no other place to run to should the country be engulfed by fire”.

According to the former head of state, Nigeria cannot be that great nation we all want,  except we all agree to collectively work together and collaborate on peace.

“Peace is not absence of disagreement. Every society must have disagreements. This is because we are not born alike, even twins do not operate in a like manner,” hence there is nothing wrong with people having disagreements.

“What is expected is that when we have disagreements we would find peaceful solutions to the issues, ” he said.

He said there can be no sustainable development where people find it difficult to deal with the problems around them peacefully.

“It is therefore, my honest opinion that we are going nowhere until we have a national consensus to work for peace.

“What our politicians should focus upon at a time like this is to be working with professionals on how to make a difference in 2019.”

The former head of state stressed the need for Nigerians to focus more on addressing the escalating development crisis in the land.

“No matter how good those managing INEC are, if things are not well managed as they are, it might be difficult for us to have credible elections in 2019,” he said.

He advised the students to reject being used in the forthcoming elections and not be allowed to be dragged into electoral malfeasance and violence.

He also appealed to politicians to be more conciliatory in their relationship and public utterances.

“INEC must be an unbiased umpire. The security agencies in the country must be fair to all, people must be free to vote their leaders”.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Idowu Olayinka, praised the former head of state, adding “it is very rare for a military head of state to say he has to grant the wishes  of the people for a democratic government.

“This is the kind of things we need in Nigeria for our leaders to forge peace in the country,” he haid.

The University presented a peace award to Gen. Abdulsalami, while a cafeteria was built in his honour.

Some Dignitaries at the event included former minister of Petroleum, Tam David West, the GOC, 2 Division, Fidelis Azinta,  former Executive Secretary, TETFund Prof.  Suleiman Bogoro and the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

“Unarguably, University of Ibadan remains the best in Africa. It is a world class training institute for postgraduate studies. It has graduated reputable and renowned Africans.

Before the new party schedule was released, the governor, had also expressed his desire to narrow down the large number of aspirants jostling to succeed him in the ruling APC in the state to four aspirants.

The governorship aspirants in APC in the state include, a legal luminary, Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN); a Senior Partner in KPMG Professional Services in Nigeria, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe; former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Chief Adebayo Adelabu; Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Olalekan Alli; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan; and former Head of Service, Mr. Soji Eniade.

“As I am talking to you today, I don’t have anybody in my mind. But I know within the next one week, somebody will come. I have already narrowed them down to four now because all of them are eminently qualified. Look at what we parade and compare them with what opposition is parading. We need quality and we have that quality in all the aspirants.

“I will meet with all the aspirants at a meeting on Saturday. The meeting we hope will help to streamline the contestants so that many of them won’t have to waste money in buying nomination forms.

“I think it will be bad to put N22.5million in a project that you are sure will not be successful. Besides, they cannot all be the governor at the same time and we hope we will be able to come up with something positive at the end of the meeting.”

Earlier, the Governor while paying a visit to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemo in his palace enjoined all monarchs and traditional rulers in the state to always support the government of the day for rapid socioeconomic development.

  • 2019 Senate poll: Tough battles ahead for Shettima, Okorocha, Yari, other 2nd term govs

In the next few months, some state governors in their second term will end their tenure and bid bye to exotic villas where they had called the shots for eight years like the Lord of Manor. But Their Excellencies are not tired. They still want to be relevant, they want to remain in the limelight. In the next dispensation, they are eyeing the Senate. In this piece, our Managing Editor, Northern Operations, YUSUF ALLI, examines the battle ahead for the affected governors.

In the next couple of months, 11 out of the nation’s 36 governors will no longer be eligible to be governors as they would be in office for the mandatory eight years. Those affected are Governors Kashim Shettima( Borno); Ayodele Fayose(Ekiti); Ibrahim Dankwambo(Gombe); Rochas Okorocha(Imo); Abdulfatah Ahmed(Kwara); Umaru Tanko Al-Makura(Nasarawa); Ibikunle Amosun(Ogun); Rauf Aregbesola(Osun) and Abiola Ajimobi(Oyo).

For senators and members of the House of Representatives who became governors, returning to the National Assembly is a familiar turf.  But for those outgoing governors seeking to be senators for the first time , it may be a different ball game. Yes, the constituency is smaller, but the battle is tougher as the variables may also be different.

    The situation at present

In the 109-member of the 8th Senate , 20 are ex-governors. They are the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki,   Theodore Orji (Abia); Eyinnaya Abaribe (Abia); Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom ); Andy Uba (Anambra); David Mark  (Benue); George Akume (Benue); Abiodun Olujimi (Ekiti); Danjuma Goje  (Gombe); Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano); Ibrahim Gaya (Kano); Adamu Aliero (Kebbi); Muhammed Lafiagi (Kwara); Abdullahi Adamu  (Nasarawa); Jonah Jang  (Plateau); Aliyu Wammako  (Sokoto); Bukar Abba Ibrahim  (Yobe); Danladi Abubakar Sani (Taraba); Sam Egwu (Ebonyi); and Ahmed Sanni Yerima (Zamfara).

A report by a newspaper had indicated that out of the former governors, Senators Andy Uba, Abiodun Olujimi, and Theodore Orji have sponsored an appreciable number of bills.

Saraki stood tall among them having learned the legislative tricks enough to win the much prized seat of the President of the Senate. Many of them are bench warmers because the transition from executive mansions to hallowed chambers is a Herculean task for them.

What are the chances of the 10 governors eyeing the 9th senate?

Investigation by our correspondent indicated that political realities in the affected states have shown that it won’t be a tea-party for most of them. The challenges before the governors , among others, include clamour  for power shift, ethnicism, disdain for godfatherism.

    Shettima(Borno)

Ordinarily with his modest achievements in office in the midst of insurgency, Governor Kashim Shettima should have an easy ride to the 9th Senate but he faces some hurdles, the latest being where he hails from in Borno. He is either expected to contest for the senatorial seat in Borno Central District (the platform he used to be governor) or Borno North District where bitter politics in the state has led to the discovery of his real origin. Whatever it is, he will slug it out with Sen. Kaka Garbai (from Borno Central who may not relinquish his slot without a viable alternative like the governorship ticket) and Abubakar Kyari representing Borno North. Shettima, widely seen as a “central  boy, ” requires much of serious political calculation and negotiation before taking a leap for the Senate. The governor’s major headache is how to rehabilitate Garbai in a commensurate measure.

A source , familiar with the state’s politics, said: “Kashim Shettima was born in Maiduguri, located in Borno Central. His mother is from the central, but his father is a Mallam from Ngazai in Borno North Senatorial District. His associates had mooted the idea that he runs for the seat from the North.  But sensing the danger, especially because Kyari, the incumbent, is very popular and formidable, the idea was dropped. To displace Kyari from the Senate would mean to hand him the governorship ticket.

“So at it is, his posters are everywhere for Borno Central Senatorial District. For now, it is certain he will run from the central. The incumbent, Garbai, is his friend. Without Shettima’s prompting, Garbai would not have run in the first place when the seat became vacant shortly before the inauguration of the Senate in 2015. Hon. Umar Kumalia had wanted to run then ; he, however, gave way when it became obvious that the governor preferred Garbai, who incidentally is Kumalia’s friend too.

“For now, apart from Shettima, no one has shown interest in the seat within the APC. And even with the PDP, no visible aspirants for now. But should the Abuja politicians within the APC decide to move against Shettima, getting someone to run against him within the party won’t be too difficult.

“For the north, the only strong person from PDP who can challenge the APC candidate is Sen. Sanusi Daggash (a former Minister of National Planning). But Daggash has been on the quiet side politically in recent times.”

    Al- Makura(Nasarawa)

Were it constitutionally possible to have a third term in office, the people of Nasarawa State would have allowed Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura to continue . But the reality has dawned on everyone; the governor has to leave the Executive Lounge for a shot at the Nasarawa South Senatorial District seat. He will be on the turf against the incumbent Senator from the Peoples Democratic Party, Sen. Suleiman Adokwe( a third term Senator); a PDP member representing Keana/Doma/Awe in the House of Representatives, Ogoshi Onawo; and Husseini Egyegbola of the APC, who was elected as a senator in 2015 before the Election Petitions Tribunal upturned his victory.

Getting APC ticket by Al-Makura is taken for granted. But he has an ethnic barrier at hand and he has to work very  hard to sell his candidature .  There are five local governments in Nasarawa South Senatorial District namely; Doma, Lafia , Awe, Keana and Obi. The district also harbours about 20 ethnic groups which are contending for power, including Fulani, Tiv, Kanuri, Mighili, Gwandara and Alago among others.  Governor Al-Makura comes from Kwandere in Lafia Local Government Area. He is a Gwandara by tribe, which is  a minority in Lafia LGA and the Senatorial District.  According to findings, three of the local governments areas(Doma, Keana, and Obi ), are controlled by Alago tribe  of Sen. Adokwe, Onawo and Egyegbola.

The battle is basically between Alago ( where late Governor Akwe Doma hailed from  ) and other ethnic groups in the district. It was only in 1999 that the Alago allowed the late Haruna Abubakar(a Kanuri), who was a  Deputy Senate President to late Chuba Okadigbo, to  represent the district.

For Al-Makura, history beckons on him to break another electoral jinx again in the state as a minority. His God-fearing, good and fair-minded nature has fetched him a rare political goodwill like the case in 2011 when he became a governor as a minority. If he gets his political strategy right, he might secure the Senatorial ticket. Once Al-Makura can secure the huge votes from Lafia Local Government Area(LGA) and about 5% to 10% in other four LGAs, he will ride to the Senate with less sweat. The huge votes from Lafia, Keffi and Nasarawa Eggon crowned him as a governor seven years ago.  And he can defeat his opponent in a landslide if he retains his cosmopolitan look and make his campaign issues-based rather than playing ethnic politics. Surely, all eyes will be on Al-Makura if he secures the APC ticket.

    Ahmed(Kwara)

Will the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, compensate Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for his loyalty? As the outgoing governor of Kwara State, Ahmed’s ultimate desire is to be a senator for Kwara South Senatorial District. He is seeking the ticket currently held by Senator Abdulrafiu Ibrahim, who has been a long standing loyalist of Saraki. It is a hard knot for Saraki to untie but if performance is anything to go by, Sen. Ibrahim has a little edge over Ahmed, who has spent eight years to create political liability for Saraki due to his low performance in office. Saraki is battling to clean the Augean Stable at a higher cost to his political career. But going by the PDP’s Right of First Refusal for defectors, the ticket will automatically go to Ahmed leaving Ibrahim in a quandary.

Whoever is anointed by Saraki will face a tough contest with a renowned architect, Lola Ashiru, whose ingenuity led to the design of Skye Bank structures all over the country and other architectural works. Ashiru, who is from Offa , which has not produced a senator  since 1999, has the war-chest to give Ibrahim or  Ahmed a good fight. The last time Offa produced a senator was during the aborted Third Republic.

Another silent contestant is the US-based Nurudeen Adeyemi Balogun from Esie in Irepodun Local Government Area, who is determined to prove a point that a first timer can make a difference. Apart from palace rivalry in Saraki’s courtyard, Governor Ahmed has the people of Kwara South to contend with. They are enlightened, conscientious and detest money politics. The governor has to sell himself  for any electoral breakthrough. The Kwara south PDP senatorial primaries will be an interesting race

    Ajimobi(Oyo)

It is a straight fight between Governor Abiola Ajimobi and other aspirants for Oyo South Senatorial District ticket. Despite the recent electoral upset for APC in Ibarapa East Constituency in Oyo  House of Assembly, which it lost to the Peoples Democratic Party, Ajimobi may regain  his seat without sweat. Up till now, he has not known his opponent in either the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) or any of the emerging coalitions in the state. But he has an opponent in APC, Sen. Soji Akanbi, who might not get the party’s ticket because Ajimobi has a firm grip on the structure of the party. Where Akanbi is not “well accommodated”, he might seek refuge in another party. So far, Akanbi is keeping his game plan close to his chest.  A former chairman of Oluyole Local Government Area, Mr. Kehinde Olaosebikan, said: “The governor will defeat any party’s candidate for Oyo South Senatorial District. He has performed well to earn a return ticket to the Senate.” The district comprises Ibadan North, Ibadan North West, Ibadan South East, Ibadan South West, Ibadan North East, Ibarapa North, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa East,  and Ido.

    Fayose(Ekiti)

Still struggling to survive the pains of the defeat of his political godson at the recent governorship poll, Governor Ayodele Fayose faces an uncertain political future. He has spoken less of either his presidential ambition or the alternative of going to the Senate. His obvious choice is to vie for  Ekiti Central District Senatorial ticket with Sen. Fatima Raji Rasaki. But it will be a disaster and the end of the road for Fayose if he loses again. While he is considering the next step in his turbulent political career, his associate, Obafemi Adewale(a former chairman of NBA in Ekiti State), is aspiring for Ekiti Central District ticket. Whether or not the aspiration of Adewale is in trust for Fayose, time will soon tell.

    Rochas Okorocha(Imo)

Owelle Rochas Okorocha,  no doubt, is facing a massive gang-up in the state by forces within APC and those in PDP over alleged plans to foist his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, as the governorship candidate of APC in the state. He wants to make it a double-edge sword by aspiring for the senatorial ticket of Imo West Senatorial District. He wants to take over the seat of Sen. Hope Uzodinma, who is interested in the governorship race. In February, Okorocha said: “I have decided to run for the Imo West Senatorial zone because if I don’t, bad people will take the position. If my name appears on the ballot paper as contesting for the Senate, it will boost APC’s chances in the state. And many from my zone have said they will not contest if I am interested.” But he has a match in a  business mogul and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Imo State, Chief Charles Ahize and others who seek the same office.

Noted for a refrain, “My people, my people,” it will soon be judgment day for Okorocha when the Imo citizens will decide whether Okorocha can eat his cake and have it. If Okorocha has his way, he would be highlighted  in the Guinness Book of Records but if otherwise, history will be unkind to him forever.

    Yari(Zamfara)

The battle in Zamfara West Senatorial District will depend on the outcome of any accord or unwritten agreement between Governor Abdulaziz Yari and his godfather, Ahmed Sani Yerima, who was an ex-governor of the state. Yerima, who has been in the Senate since 2007, is in dire straits because he wants to produce Yari’s successor and at the same time retain his senatorial slot. But the governor, who was once a member of the House of Representatives, is interested in going to the Senate. He is from the same zone with Yerima. It was learnt that Yerima would not mind  sacrificing his senatorial ambition to be allowed to pick the next governorship candidate of APC (Yari’s successor) in Zamfara State. Yerima is said to be interested in the current Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Ibrahim Wakkala Muhammad, who was his former Commissioner for Religious Affairs. The deputy governor comes from Zamfara Central, which has never produced the executive of the state since the return of democracy in 1999. On the other hand, it was learnt that Yari favours  his most powerful Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muttaka Rini, who is from Zamfara West. Unless tact and diplomacy prevail, Yari and Yerima may lock horns  in the end. But a source said: “Whatever it is, Yerima still holds the ace in Zamfara politics. Yari needs to engage in a lot of reconciliation to win back the hearts of the people of the state.” It will be interesting to know in the next few weeks what manner of accord the two gladiators will reach.

    Gaidam  (Yobe)

This is a slippery terrain.  Governor Ibrahim Gaidam and his godfather, Sen. Bukar Abba Ibrahim have to test the waters over Yobe East Senatorial District ticket.  Although one Dr. Almajiri Gaidam is also interested in the senatorial race, the contest is really between the governor and his mentor. For Governor Gaidam, the next venture is the Senate but he is from the same district with Ibrahim who has been in the Senate since 2007. There are seven local governments in the district, including Gujba, Gulani, Damaturu, Tarmuwa, Yunusari, Geidam and Bursari. While Sen. Bukar Abba  hails from Gujba, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam is from Yunusari, although he was brought up in Gaidam.

The power game has been  a quiet political war in Yobe State since 1999; the struggle for Yobe North East by the two titans might redefine politics in the state if not maturely handled. Old prejudices/ sentiments  are being whipped up. For Gaidam, he had wanted to be a senator in 2003  after the demise of Senator  Adamu Usman  of the defunct ANPP but he was denied the ticket by Sen. Bukar Abba Ibrahim, who was then the governor of the state. Sen. Abba was said to have rated Gaidam as unfit to be a councillor. This time around the governor, who has hijacked the structure of the party,  does not want to suffer fools gladly.

His godfather will also not let go his seat. Recently, Sen. Bukar Abba Ibrahim said: “In sha Allah,  I will be seeking re-election back to the Senate in the forthcoming election and I do not see anybody as a threat.

“ I have no problems with my constituency and the electorate. I have not been recalled by those who voted me to represent them and I am physically and mentality fit. All I know is that by 2019, I will be re-elected back to the Senate.

“The governor has not told me that he is interested in the seat after the expiration of his tenure next year and I don’t need to bother myself about it since I know that there would be no vacancy because I am re-contesting for the position next year and I will continue to offer myself to my people for the position as long as I have the energy and sound health to represent them.

“I will stay in the Senate until death do us part. Everybody tells me that I’m senator for life. I’m going to be in the Senate for life…”

On his part while planning subtly, Gaidam said: “My becoming governor is not by my power or the making of any other human being. It’s destiny because somebody said I would not even be a councillor in Yobe. Today, God has made me the governor, who knows where I will be tomorrow?”

    Amosun(Ogun)

The man to beat for Ogun Central District seat is Governor Ibikunle Amosun, whose performance might give him an edge. With the party’s structure in his kitty, Amosun,  who was a one-time senator,  already has the senatorial ticket in his pocket. But he will have to slug it out with his godson, Sen. Lanre Tejuoso(who may defect to ADC), Sen. Gbenga Obadara, a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kayode Amusan(PDP)  and a former commissioner in the state, Apostle Biodun Sanyaolu (PDP). Obadara has, however, added a caveat to his aspiration when he said he night step down if Amosun is interested in the race.

Although the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa, is being speculated to be interested in the senatorial seat, it was unclear if he is serious or merely flying a kite.

    Dankwambo(Gombe)

The purchase of governorship nomination form by ex-Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sen. Bayero Nafada on Friday has confirmed a swap deal between Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo for Gombe North Senatorial District, if the governor does not get the presidential ticket of PDP. Nafada, who represents Gombe North District, has left the Senate for good. It is a different ball game if Dankwambo will keep to the secret pact with Nafada by ensuring that the former  Deputy Speaker emerges his successor.

For Dankwambo, who  has been accused of using his presidential aspiration as a smokescreen, the battle for Gombe North District might be between him and Sen. Saidu Ahmed Alkali, who was  elected as a PDP Senator  in August 2010  after the death of Sen. Kawu Peto Dukku. He was also re-elected in the April 2011general poll. Alkali was a former Commissioner for Information under ex-Governor Danjuma Goje.

  • Undue haste

It is difficult for someone to comment on the face-off between the Oyo State government and ace musician, Mr Yinka Ayefele, without at least a tinge of emotions. And I guess that was one thing the Oyo State government did not reckon with or simply ignored or underrated in the build-up to the avoidable imbroglio. Yes, imbroglio because it has become messy. Governor Abiola Ajimobi can only claim not to be perturbed by the criticisms of his government over its demolition of parts of the Music House where Ayefele’s broadcasting station, the Fresh FM based in Ibadan, the state capital, is situated, only if (to recall the Yoruba saying) he has eaten the head of a tortoise. I have the feeling that the governor is just grandstanding in his statement that being handicapped is not an excuse for someone to break the law. Something tells me that if Governor Ajimobi is not already reflecting that he could have handled the matter differently, he would do so sometime in the future. Indeed, if there is anything going for Ayefele now, it is the fact the he is perceived as the underdog that is being harassed by the almighty state government. Simply put, Ayefele is riding on the crest of being an underdog in the matter.

As a Yoruba man, I guess the governor must be aware of the proverb o na mi ko dun mi; ko dabi ara ofo. In other words, there is a difference between someone that was flogged and says he did  not feel the pain and the person that was not flogged at all. The point I am making is that the state government does not need the kind of negative publicity that the demolition generated; it is not good for its image at all, this is much more so when it is avoidable. I do not know what the state government would have lost if it had tarried for the case in court over the matter to be decided. If the government had waited this long, why couldn’t it wait a little longer for the court’s pronouncement?

But this appears the predictable pattern in governments across the country. They appear to be ever ready and willing to show their ‘tigretude’ (apologies to Prof Wole Soyinka), sometimes even over inconsequential matters. I remember the story of one of the south west governors a few years ago who had gone to a trouble spot on the prompting of some local politicians in the state who told ‘His Excellency’ that he had to go there in order to  impress it on the trouble makers and their ilk who might be thinking of formenting trouble in future that he is the executive governor of the state! Pray, is there a non-executive governor? Can there be two governors in a state?  It is instructive that no life was lost when the governor’s wife who had earlier gone to the place visited. But when ‘His Excellency’ decided to go on a ‘reconnaissance mission’, a student was killed in the ensuing fracas. I wonder how, till today, the parents of that student would feel whenever they remember the sad incident. I wonder too if the said governor would still have handled the situation the same way if confronted with it today.

But that is the way of many of our political leaders. The kind of people that mill around them, the praise orchestra who clap for ‘Their Excellencies’ when they know in their heart of hearts that what their principals are about doing would have negative consequences on the government they are serving. Some of those who chose to be bold to tell it as it is would either get fired or the governors would keep them at an arm’s length, if they cannot fire them outright.

Although Oyo State government’s partial demolition of Ayefele’s property at about 5.30 a.m. last Sunday was not the first such demolition in the early hours, those of us out of government should be asking why most governments find it convenient to carry out such tasks at such ungodly hours. When in February, the Kaduna State government pulled down the building of Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi , a property used as the secretariat of a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna, it was done at about 5.00 a.m.

Then, in the Ayefele’s case, the man had approached an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan seeking to stop the demolition. His counsel, Mr Olayinka Bolanle, in an exparte motion, filed before the court, sought for an order restraining the state government from demolishing the property pending the determination of the suit. He added that due process was followed in the construction of the structure while relevant approvals were obtained from the state’s departments and agencies associated with land and housing. Justice I. Yerima, in his wisdom, ordered the claimant to ensure service of the court process on the respondent and adjourned the case till Monday for the hearing of the ex-parte motion. But the court process would appear to have been aborted as the state government demolished the structure on Sunday.

I wish there is a way the courts could be punishing persons and institutions that treat court orders disdainfully. In several respects, the impunity that the Oyo State government demonstrated in violating the court order is what many governments, including the Federal Government, do. Yes, we could say Ayefele preempted the government’s determination to bring down his building, hence his rushing to court when he did when, actually, the issue did not just start today. So, why did he wait till now before going to court? But then, there is no time that an aggrieved party cannot go to court to seek redress. The moment Ayefele had gone to court, the government, as a law-abiding entity, ought to have suspended action on the property, at least pending the resolution of the matter. Our politicians should not give the impression that the courts matter only when their votes are stolen or election figures are altered in favour of their opponents.

Another common trend is that of governments taking on their opponents in the most cynical manner. Fresh FM might have been critical of the state government; that does not necessarily make it an enemy of the government. Even if it is an enemy; that is no excuse for the government to clamp down on it the way it did. After all, as we are seeing all over the country in the shameless defections by many of our politicians, there are no permanent friends or foes. What has remained permanent is the interest of the individual politician, not even that of their constituencies. At any rate, should a media house be friend to any particular government? Shouldn’t it carry out its functions as it deemed fit? Where then is objectivity if a station has to be a permanent friend of a government?

But nothing I have said so far should be taken as support for Ayefele, especially if he violated any building code. I love Ayefele’s music like millions of other Nigerians. But that would not make me support illegality on his part, or on the part of anyone for that matter. I perfectly understand the consequences of people violating building codes. But I am worried more because we are in a democracy and the government should be a little more sensitive to the public mood in many of the decisions it wants to take. This is not necessarily saying it should be led by it. Then the courts; our political leaders should accord them more respect. But we do not seem to have much of that anywhere in the country now. And it is worrisome.
