    Scavenger docked for allegedly stealing iron rods

     A 26-year-old scavenger, Abubakar Adamu, was on Thursday arraigned in a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, Abuja for allegedly stealing iron rods valued at N165,500.

    The defendant, who resides in the Tipper Garage axis of Lugbe, Abuja, is facing criminal trespass and theft charges.

    The Prosecutor, Abdullahi Tanko told the court that the complainant, Mr Saheed Barkare of Jedi Estate, Airport Road, Abuja, reported the matter at Iddo Divisional Police station on Oct. 29.

    Tanko alleged that on the same date, the defendant dishonesty broke into STF Global estate airport road, Abuja and stole iron rods of different sizes valued at N165, 500.

    He told the court that on his arrest, the defendant refused to disclose the whereabouts of the alleged stolen items.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Senior Magistrate, Nuhu Tukur, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.

    He said that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and adjourned the case until Dec. 3, for hearing.

  • Police dislodge kidnappers on Ibadan-Ife road

    inspector-General of Police (IGP) Abubakar Adamu is excited that the governors embraced collaboration as a better way to tackle insecurity.

    Represented by the Deputy IG in Southwest, Mr Taiwo Lakanu, the IGP detailed what the police were doing to defeat criminals.

    His words: “I am particularly glad that we are now more conscious of the imperative of collaboration, the indispensability of common front to fight our common enemies who make lives miserable by their nefarious activities.

    “To address the security challenges in the Southwest, we have reviewed and improved on our security strategies across the country, dealing with the states according to their peculiar challenges. We have given additional PMF personnel, Intelligence Response Team, vehicles and other logistic support to Zone XI Osogbo to enable it deal with recent security challenges in some parts of Ondo, Osun and Oyo states.

    “I want to reassure the citizens that the Nigeria Police has emplaced frameworks that will facilitate the strengthening of Operation Puff Adder and ensure the sustenance of its gains.This includes plans directed at re-organizing and re-launching the safer Highway and Safer City Models of Policing which will entail the acquisition of new fleet of vehicles that will be deployed to dominate the public space as well as the emplacement of CCTV and other cutting-edge technologies for city surveillance.

    The current attempts at adopting and implementing the concept of Community Policing also represents part of enduring strategies aimed at changing the policing narratives of the country.

    “Since its inauguration, the outfit has made very significant achievements in the fight against kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry and other heinous crimes.

    We appreciate the support of the governors. Your contributions in terms of logistic support to your respective states has added impetus to security and is largely responsible for the relative peace in the states. However, there is still need for more support to enable us address our security challenges adequately. We all admit that there is a gap, and the need to find the missing link is the reason for the gathering.”

    The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of Zone 11 comprising Oyo, Osun and Ondo states, Mr Leye Oyebade, said security agencies were not overwhelmed by the challenges in the region.

    He said the kidnappers operating around Ikire and other communities on Ibadan-Ife expressway have been arrested.

    The police, he said, decided not to publicise their successes for security reasons, adding that he was responding to the governors’ claims that the police were overwhelmed by the level of insecurity in the country.

    Hailing the governors for their support, Oyebade insisted that more support, especially in the area of vehicles and technology, will further enhance the police ability to offer a more effective policing.

    He also spoke about policing riverine communities through which, he said, criminals escape.

    “We are not overwhelmed. We are going to succeed,” he said. Renowned criminologist Prof. Femi Odekunle, Olutayo Adesina, Senator Iyiola Omisore and the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) made presentations at the summit.

    Some members of the public also made contributions. Technical sessions will hold on Wednesday and Thursday.

    At the summit were traditional rulers including the Oluwo of Iwo Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi; Olugbo of Ugbo Oba Frederick Akinruntan; the Osemawe of Ondo Oba Victor Kiladejo; Oba George Faduyile of Ikale land and Olomuo of Omuo-Ekiti Oba Omonigbehin Adedotun, among others.

    Also there were heads of security agencies including Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Security (DSS). Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) and the Army.

    The YCE, Afenifere and Agbekoya were represented on the occasion.

     

  • Buhari directs Idris to hand over to Ag. IGP

    President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the outgoing Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris to hand over to Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.

    Idris retirement came today, 15th January after clocking 60 years of age.

    This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday by the Force Spokesman, Ag. DCP Jimoh Moshood.

    “The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria has consequently directed that the outgoing Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, hand over to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Mohammed Abubakar Adamu,mni as the Acting Inspector General of Police.”

    The outgoing IGP while  appreciating the President and Nigerians for the opportunity and support given to during his service, urged them to extend the same level of support and assistance to his successor, Ag. IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.

    “The Acting Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu,mni hails from Lafia, Nasarawa State and a holder of BSc. Geography. He enlisted into the Force on 1st February, 1986 as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

    “Ag. IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu,mni is a versatile and seasoned Police Officer, a professional per excellence. He attended several Senior Officer Courses on Law Enforcement, Crime Prevention, Control and Management within and outside Nigeria.

    “Before his appointment as the Acting Inspector General of Police, he was a Directing Staff at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, Plateau State.

    “He was Commissioner of Police in Ekiti and Enugu States and also Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5 Police Command Headquarters, Benin, Edo State.”

  • Man remanded in prison over theft of laptop

    A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 22-year-old man, Nura Dahiru, in prison over alleged theft of laptop and a phone handset valued at N90, 000.

    Dahiru, who resides at Minanata area of Sokoto, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft brought against him.

    Chief Magistrate Abubakar Adamu had ordered his remand to allow the police to carry out further investigations.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Khalid Musa, told the court that the case was reported at Ugwuan Rogo Police Station by the complainant, Abubakar Abdullahi of the same address on July 16.

    He said Dahiru, who allegedly conspired with Abdulaziz Bawa now at large, entered the complainant’s room and stole a laptop and a Nokia phone all valued at N90, 000.

    The offences contravened Sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Court remands teenager for engaging in homosexual act

    A Sokoto State Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered that an 18-year-old man, Mohammed Bello, charged with committing homosexual act, be remanded in prison.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, gave the order on Friday after Bello, a trader of Gagi Area, Sokoto, pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of unnatural offence.

    Adamu said the court lacked jurisdiction over the matter and adjourned the case until July 21 for mention and possible transfer to a competent court.

    The Prosecutor, Abubakar Tambuwal, had told the court that the accused committed the offence between February and April.

    Tambuwal said that the accused intentionally lured a 10-year-old boy into his room and had sexual intercourse with him against the order of nature.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Penal Code.

  • 20-yr-old bags 11 months imprisonment for stealing cell phone

    A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, sentenced one Anas Muhammad to 11 months in prison for stealing cell phone.

    The 20-year-old convict, who resides in Emir Yaya Area of Sokoto, pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, sentenced Muhammad to 11 months in prison without an option of fine.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Khalid Musa, told the court that the matter was reported at Uguwan Rogo Police Station by Japhet Magaji of Sultan Bello Secondary School, Sokoto on May 1.

    He said Muhammad criminally went into the NYSC Lodge at the above address and stole a Techno Phantom 5 handset belonging to the complainant, Japhet Magaji, valued at N35,000 including N20, 000 cash.

    Musa said the offence contravened Sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Woman remanded in Sokoto over alleged murder of her baby

    A business woman in Sokoto,  Rabiat Mustapha, 30, has been remanded in prison custody over alleged murder of her baby born out of wedlock.

    Mustapha, who resides at Asada area of Sokoto, is facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and preventing a child from being borne or causing it die after birth.

    The accused pleaded guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, however, said the court lacked jurisdiction over the matter but ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody.

    Adamu, adjourned the case until April 9 for mention and possible transfer to a court of competent jurisdiction.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Umar Rabiu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 3 at Asada area of Sokoto.

    Rabiu said that the woman conceived out of wedlock and gave birth to a baby boy which she strangled to death and threw the body into a pit latrine.

    He said the offence contravened Section 235 of the Penal Code.

    Trader, remanded over alleged theft of satellite dishes

    A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 26-year-old trader, Hassan Mohammed, over alleged theft of satellite dishes.

    Mohammed, 26, who resides at Gusau road, Sokoto, is facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, trespass and stealing.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, ordered the remand of the accused in prison following the prosecution’s request to allow the Police to conclude investigation into the matter.

    Adamu adjourned the case until March 15 for hearing.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpt. Faruk Bala had told the court that the offences were committed in December 2017 along Shinkafi road, Sokoto.

    Bala said that the accused unlawfully entered into the residence of one Bishop Yabugbe, Abdullahi Bliss, Obinna David and Uzoma Sam all of Shinkafi road and stole their satellite dishes all valued at N37, 000.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 349 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Court remands man in prison over assault, trespass

    A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ court has ordered the remand of a 35-year-old man, Alhaji Danmagajiy in prison for alleged assault and trespass.

    The Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, who gave the order on Monday, adjourned the matter to Jan 31, 2018 for hearing.

    The defendant of Gidan Sanda village area of Kware Local Government Area in Sokoto State is facing a three-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, trespass and assault.

    The offence, according to the prosecutor, Cpl. Umar Rabi’u contravened sections, 342 and 268 of the penal code law.

    Rabi’u told the court that on Jan. 9, one Alhaji Abubakar Gago lodged a complaint at the Police Criminal Investigation Department, Sokoto.

    He said that the accused attacked the complainant’s daughter-in-law, named Hadiza, with the intent of having intercourse with her.

    The prosecutor said that the 25-year-old girl raised alarm attracting people nearby who came to her rescue.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Court remands land agent for alleged racketing

    A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered the remand of 48-year-old  estate agent, Lawali Maigara, for alleged land fraud.

    The defendant was accused of defrauding one Mubarak Bello of Fakon Iddi area of Sokoto of N400,000 on land transaction.

    The defendant was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and cheating, offences contrary to Sections, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Abubakar Mohammed, had told the court that the defendant sold a plot of land to the victim at N380, 000, alongside N20, 000 agency fee.

    Mohammed said that when the victim started developing his land, the accused went and sold the same land to another person, leading to the destruction of the victim’s building.

    This prosecutor said the incident occurred sometimes in 2014.

    The accused, however, denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody until police investigation is completed.

    Adamu adjourned the case until Nov. 8, for further mention.
