    Sokoto businessman remanded over N639,500 fraud

    A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded in prison a businessman, Nasiru Garba, charged with  misappropriating N639, 500 entrusted to him by a colleague.

    Garba, a resident of Gidan Dare area of Sokoto, was arraigned on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, criminal misappropriation and cheating.

    Police Prosecutor Ashafa Jega, told the court that the accused was entrusted with N639,500 by the complainant, Muhammadu Ahmad of Gidan Bahuri area, Sokoto, to give his son.

    The accused was told to give the money to the complainant’s son, Al -mustapha Tukur, a phone dealer at Kasuwan Kure but converted it to his own, he said.

    According to Jega, gave no convincing explanation why he spent the money.

    He said the offence which was committed on Aug. 3, contravened Sections 309, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The businessman pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

    Chief Magistrate Abubakar Adamu remanded in prison for further investigations and adjourned the case until Aug. 26 for hearing.

    Court remands carpenter over attempt to steal car

    A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 37-year-old carpenter, Murtala Saidu, over alleged attempt to steal a Honda Civic car.

    The Chief Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, remanded Saidu after he pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and attempt to commit an offence to wit theft.

    Adamu adjourned the case till Aug. 20 for hearing.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Naallah Jibo, told the court that the accused, who resides in Mabera area in Sokoto, was caught while unlawfully disconnecting the wiring of the car with the intent to steal it.

    Jibo said that the Honda civic car, BC 987 DKA, belonging to Umar Farouk was parked in front of the complainant’s house

    He told the court that the complainant reported the incident at Ungwuan Rogo Police Station, Sokoto.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Section 95 of the Penal Code.

    Farmer arraigned for stabbing man to death

    A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court, on Friday remanded in prison custody a 38-year-old farmer, Aliyu Adamu, accused of stabbing one Nura Isiah to death.

    The police prosecutor, Insp. Na’allah Jibo told the court that one Haliru Isiah of No. 32 Mojiyo Road,  Sokoto reported the matter at Kwanni Divisional police headquarters.

    Jibo said the report showed that on Jan. 1, the accused of Kofa Area, Sokoto, criminally conspired with two others now at large, and attacked the deceased with knives.

    He said that those at large are Guti Mohammad and Lukman Soja.

    The prosecutor said the accused went to the deceased’s shop at Old Market and stabbed him in the stomach, adding that the man was rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, where he was confirmed dead.

    The News Agency of Nigeria [NAN] reports that accused is facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide punishable under section 97 and 224 of the penal code law.

    He however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mr Abubakar Adamu ordered for the remand of the accused in prison custody, because the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case.

    He said the accused would remain in custody until the case was properly transferred to the State High Court, for hearing.

    Three arraigned for N58m fraud, granted bail

    Three petroleum products dealers were on Thursday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N58 million from a businessman.

    Abubakar Adamu (40), Abubakar Aliyu (54) and Isah Ibrahim (34) were arraigned on three –count charge of fraud, stealing and conspiracy.

    They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The defence counsel, Casmir Okoli, urged the court to grant the accused persons bail on liberal terms.

    Magistrate S.K. Matepo granted each defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the case till July 10.

    Earlier, the prosecuting police officer, Eshiet Eshiet, said the defendants committed the offences in Lagos, between March and April.

    He alleged that they obtained N58m from the complainant, Mr. Virginus Erims of Virgiman Nigeria Limited under the guise of supplying six trucks of 50 thousand litres of petroleum products (PMS), one truck of 50 thousand litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and one truck of 50 thousand litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK).

    “The accused knew the representation was false and stole Mr. Erims’ N58m without supplying the products the money was meant for,” Esheit said.

    According to him, the offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 and punishable under same.

    Three petrol dealers face N58m fraud charge

    Three petroleum products dealers who allegedly obtained the sum of N58 million from a businessman under false pretences, were on Thursday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused: Abubakar Adamu, 40; Abubakar Aliyu, 54, and Isah Ibrahim, 34, are standing trial on a three-count charge of fraud, stealing and conspiracy.

    The accused, however, denied the charge.

    The Prosecutor, SP Eshiet Eshiet, had told the court that the accused committed the offences between March and April in Lagos.

    Eshiet said that the accused obtained the sum of N58 million from the complainant, Virginus Erims, of Virgiman Nigeria Ltd., under the guise of supplying six trucks of 50,000 litres of petrol (PMS) to him.

    He said that other products the accused promised to supply to the complainant were one truck of 50,000 litres of diesel (AGO) and one truck of 50,000 litres of kerosene (DPK).

    “The accused knew that the representation was false, therefore, stole Mr Erims’s N58 million without supplying the products which the money was meant for,” Esheit said.

    According to him, the offences contravene Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Casmir Okoli, urged the court to grant them bail on liberal terms.

    The Magistrate, Mrs S.K. Matepo, admitted each of the accused to bail in the sum of N5 million, with two sureties each in like sum.

    Matepo said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused.

    She also said that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must produce relevant documents.

    She adjourned the case until July 10, for mention.

     

  • Sokoto court remands seven men after guilty plea

    A Sokoto Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded seven men after they pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and defamation.

    The men are Felix Audu, Abdulmalik Abubakar and five others, whose names were simply given as Canis, Donatus , Jagodo, Jacob and Kasim, all of Ungwan Rogo Community in Sokoto.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Monday Kennedy, told court that on March 31, one Alhaji Mustapha Sani, reported to the Unguan Rogo Police Station that the seven men had defamed and assaulted him.

    Kennedy said that Sani had reported that the seven men had accused him of having sexual intercourse with boys and had beaten him up.

    The prosecutor said that the men while attacking Sani, forcefully removed N52, 000 from him.

    The accused men pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against them.

    They were earlier arraigned on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, defamation, using force and assault, contrary to Sections 97, 392, 265, 288 of the Penal Code.

    The Magistrate, Mr Abubakar Adamu, ordered that the men should be remanded in prison custody until police investigation was concluded.

    He adjourned the matter till May 10.
