  • Court sentences bag snatcher to six months imprison

    An FCT Area Court Judge, Abubakar Sadiq, on Tuesday, sentenced a bag snatcher Chukwuemeka Ndukwu,37, to six months in prison.

    The court convicted Ndukwu, of no fixed address after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of theft and extortion.

    Sadiq, however, gave him an option to pay N20, 000 fine.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Dalhatu Zannah, had informed the court that on April 28, the police patrol team attached to Utako Police Station arrested Ndukwu.

    Zannah said that the team of policemen arrested the convict on the same date at about 10. 50 p.m. at a criminal hide out at Jabi.

    He said the convict and his gang now at large usually hide and forcefully snatch woman hand bags, phones and other valuable from innocent citizen.

    He added that during police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime.

    The offences contravened the provisions of Sections 79 and 294 of the Penal Code.

  • Man jailed four months for stealing mattress

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday, sentenced a 23-year old man, Emmanuel Chukwu, to four months imprisonment for stealing a mattress.

    The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000 as fine.and said that the sentence would serve as deterrent to others who might want to steal.

    Chukwu, who resides at Mamasa Estate Galadima Gwarimpa, Abuja, was convicted on a count charge of theft.

    The convict had pleaded guilty to the offence and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Zannan Dalhatu, had told the court that a neighbor to the accused, John Nwaru, reported the matter at the Gwarimpa Police Station, on April 21.

    Dalhatu told the court that the accused stole the 10-inch mattress belonging to the complainant.

    He said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Police drag man to court for alleged criminal force, assault

    A man, Chris Mario of Jabi, Abuja, on Thursday, appeared before a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on a two-count charge of  criminal force and assault.

    The prosecutor, Zannan Dalhatu, told the court that Aondona Fiase of the same address with the defendant, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on April 21.

    Dalhatu said that on the same date, the defendant allegedly broke into her apartment and beat her up, and in the process, she lost a tooth and sustained bodily injuries.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 264 and 246 of the Penal Code. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted him a bail of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. Sadiq said that the surety must reside within the court jurisdiction. He adjourned the case to May 30 for hearing.

  • Man gets two months imprisonment for stabbing friend

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Monday sentenced one Ifeanyi Chibuzor to two months imprisonment for inflicting injuries on his friend.

    The Judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, said the punishment would serve as deterrent to others.

    Sadiq also ordered the convict to pay N5, 000 as restitution to the complainant, Daniel Bruce.

    Chibuzor, of God is Good Motors in Utako, Abuja, was sentenced on a count charge of causing hurt to his friend.

    The convict, who pleaded guilty, however, begged the court for leniency and was given N10, 000 fine option,

    The Prosecutor, Mr Dalhatu Zannah, had told the court that the matter was reported at the Utako Police Station by the complainant, Daniel Bruce, of Jabi Motor Park, Abuja on April 24.

    Zannah said that on the same date at about 9 a.m, the convict and the complainant had an argument over N200.

    The prosecutor said the convict broke a bottle and stabbed the complainant on his left arm.

    He said that the complainant sustained serious injury on his hand and the convict took to his heels but was apprehended.

    Zannah told the court that the complainant spent N10, 000 for the treatment of his wound at the Wuse General Hospital, Abuja.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 246 of the Penal Code.

  • Court jails mechanic over attempt to steal generator

    An FCT Area Court Judge, Abubakar Sadiq, on Thursday sentenced an auto-mechanic, Sa’ad Yahaya, to two months imprisonment for attempting to steal a generator.

    The court sentenced Yahaya of Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal trespass and attempt to commit theft.

    Yahaya had begged the court for leniency after admitting to the crime.

    The judge, who found the convict guilty as charged, held that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Dalhatu Zannah, had told the court that on April 11, one Nuhu Haruna of Benson crescent Utako, Abuja, reported the incident at the Utako Police Station.

    Zannah alleged that the defendant and three others now at large criminally trespassed into the complainant’s house and attempted to steal his generator.

    The prosecutor told the court that while the defendant was arrested, his accomplices escaped.

    He said the offences  contravened Sections 348 and 95 of the Penal Code.

  • Phone thief bags three months

    A 26-year-old man, Philip John, is to spend the next 90 days in jail for stealing a phone, a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, handed down the sentence on Tuesday.

    The judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, said the court had no option than to sentence the accused since had pleaded guilty to the charge.

    He, however, gave the convict an option of N5, 000 fine and advised him to be of good behaviour and desist from crime.

    John of Utako Village in the FCT was tried for stealing to which he pleaded guilty.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Dalhatu Zannah told the court that the incident was reported by the complainant, David Bature also of Utako Village at Utako Police Station on April 10.

    Zannah said on April 3 the accused came to the complainant’s barber’s shop looking for a job, and while he was trying to interview him, he gave his phone to one of his boys to download music for him.

    “The accused smartly collected the phone and absconded.”

    Zannah said the accused was later arrested on April 12 and handed over to the police to whom he had confessed selling the phone for N15, 000 to a man, Rabiu Anka.

    The offences violated Section 287 of the Penal Code.

  • Police arraign woman for allegedly stealing 7-month-old baby

    The police on Wednesday arraigned a 27-year-old woman, Bridget Haruna in a Karmo Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing a seven-month-old baby girl.

    Haruna, who reside at Jabi Daki Biyu village, Abuja, was arraigned on a one count charge of stealing a baby.

    She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Police prosecutor, Dalhatu Zannah, had informed the court that on April 4, one Vourjack Pam, a resident of Gwarinpa Estate Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station.

    Zannah said that the complainant reported the matter to the police for proper investigation which led to the arrest of the defendant.

    He alleged that on April 3 at about 11 a.m the complainant’s wife, Mrs Godiya Pam took their seven-month baby girl to Gwarinpa general hospital Abuja to visit a patient.

    The prosecutor said that while the complainant’s wife was in the hospital, the accused criminally and deceitfully took the baby from the mother and absconded to unknown destination.

    The prosecutor said that Haruna was later seen at Jabi DakiBiyu village with the baby.

    He said that the accused lied that she went to buy something for the baby.

    Zannah said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

    After arraignment, the judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, granted Haruna bail in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum.

    Sadiq ordered that the surety must have a reasonable means of livelihood and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

    The judge also ordered that the surety must present a current utility bill in his name to the court registrar and adjourned the matter till May 9 for hearing.

  • Court remands woman for theft of eight months baby

    A Karmo Grade I Area Court in Abuja on Thursday ordered the remand of one Theresa Obonna, in Prison for alleged theft of eight months baby.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, gave the order after Obonna of Jabi, Abuja, pleaded not guilty to a count charge of theft.

    Sadiq adjourned the case till May 3 for hearing.

    The Prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that one Godstime David, who resides in Akwa-Ibom, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on March 2.

    Dalhatu said the complainant alleged that in January 2017, her lover impregnated and asked her to abort it but she refused and relocated to Abuja.

    She said that she stayed with the defendant and after giving birth, the defendant seizied the baby and moved to an unknown destination.

    Dalhau said that during police investigation the baby was recovered from the defendant. The prosecutor also said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Man to receive six strokes of cane for stealing cell phone

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered that one Abdulrahama Sally, be given six strokes of the cane for stealing a cell phone.

    Sally who resides at Utako, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of joint act and theft.

    The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, who gave the order, after Sally admitted committing the offence, said that the court might not be lenient with him the next time he appeared before it.

    The prosecutor, Zannan Dalhatu, had told the court that the matter was reported by one Eugene Dauda, of same address with Sally, at the Utako Police Station on March 29.

    The prosecutor said that the convict on that same date, with one person who is now at large, snatched​ the complainant’s Tecno  cell phone valued at N30, 000.

    Dalhatu said that the  person at large escaped with the phone and Sally was caught with the help of passersby.

    During police investigation he confessed to the crime.

    The offences contravened Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code.

    Man jailed three months for stealing books

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Sadiq Ahmed, to three months imprisonment for stealing books and window frames.

    Ahmed, of Jabi Motor Park, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of trespass and stealing, punishable under Section 287 of the Penal Code.

    The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, said that the punishment would serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.

    The prosecutor, Mr Dalhatu Zannah, had told the court that one Christopher Moses of Utako, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on March 4.

    Zannah told the court that on the same date at about 3 a.m. the convict dishonestly trespassed into house No. 29 at Utako to steal the items.

    He said the convict criminally vandalised the complainant’s window and made away with his books, but he was apprehended, and the items recovered.

    He said during police investigation, Ahmed admitted committing the offence.
