After one-week of trials to select the Nigerian tennis team for the 2015 African Games, Clifford Enosoregbe and Osariemen Airhunmwunde emerged as top players among the 14 players that took part in the exercise.
According to national coach, Rotimi Akinloye, two players – Henry Atseye and Onyeka Mbanu who were part of the team to the 2011 African Games in Mozambique were knocked out of the trials by injuries.
From the eight male players that participated in the selection, the hard-hitting Enosoregbe topped the trials while Moses Michael and Christian Paul finished second and third respectively. Sunday Emmanuel settled for fourth place.
In the women trials, Airhunmwunde emerged as top player while Sara Adegoke, Chrsity Agugbom and Anu Aiyegbusi made the list of top four.
Akinloye, however, said that United Kingdom (UK)-based Elizabeth Pam and Russia-born Melissa Ifidzhen are expected to join the team this week for the final trials that will decide the eventual team to the games.
“All the players that took part in the trials still have chance to make the team because we want to use the trials to know the best. But all the others are on reserves in case any of the players cops an injury. It would be recalled that some of the selected players prior to the 2011 edition and they were later decamped for indiscipline and it was the reserves that went on to do well. So we will surely be on the lookout for all the players until the final list is concluded,” Akinloye told SportingLife.
In 2011, Nigeria finished third with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals while Egypt and Tunisia finished first and second respectively in the tennis event overall medal table.

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) said it is collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force to combat crimes on the nation’s highways and enhance safety throughout the year.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the agency, Mrs Susan Chukwunwem on Saturday in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Managing Director of FERMA, Mr. Gabriel Amuchi and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase had a joint inspection tour of the Abuja-Lokoja-Okene road.
The statement said the joint inspection tour was aimed at identifying the black spots along the Abuja-Lokoja-Okene road, particularly the Osara Village, Iruekpe in Kogi.
It said the notorious black spot (Osara Village), with over grown vegetation had been harbouring criminals, who incessantly unleashed their evils activities on innocent road users.
According to the statement, Amuchi said the partnership between his agency and the Nigeria Police Force was a demonstration of government’s determination to ensure safety of roads users.
“What is happening here is a very strong collaboration and because of hoodlums, we need serious security presence and patrol.
“At the end of this clearing, we would improve visibility and sight-seeing and it is going to be a continuous relationship in other flash points.
“We will need collaboration to commence work in safety places and the collaboration is in line with government directive to help Nigerians heave a sigh of relief,’’ he said.
It quoted the IGP as saying that, “this stretch of road has become a source of security concern to us due to armed robbery and kidnapping attacks.
“The Commissioner of Police in Kogi has been working tirelessly but the nature of the forest has given succour to hoodlums who always come out of the forest to attack people.
“All other stakeholders are working tirelessly to ensure that we have a secured environment and the highways are also safe for travelers.
“I decided to seek the assistance of FERMA to see how we can open a space here as part of our security prevention to ensure that the place is safe,’’ Arase said.
He said that the ongoing vegetation control of the identified black spots would be a continuous exercise to enhance motorist visibility to deter criminal acts.
The statement noted that the agency had commenced the monitoring of the right of way through a committee comprising of the Police, FRSC and the NSCDC, to stop further abuse of people’s right of way.

THE Ladi Kwali Hall of Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, will play host to top dignitaries, this Saturday, as foremost entertainer and philanthropist, Jolly Abani, premieres his new flick, Power of Tomorrow.
Abani said the ceremony will score high on two points; the content of the movie and the high profile guests which will include top politicians, captains of industry and the film’s star-studded cast.
The producer who doubles as a cast member in the film, starring as Mrs. Allen, said all necessary arrangements have been put in place to make the film premiere a night of classy entertainment.
Expected at the premiere are cast of the movie such as Oge Okoye, I.K Ogbonna, Yakubu Mohammed and Jibola Dabo who will also rock the red carpet at the show.
Others, according to Abani, are political bigwigs such as the former governor of Ebonyi state, Senator Sam Egwu, All Progressives Congress chieftain and former governor of Abia state, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu as well as investors like Chisco Transport boss, Chief Chidi Anyiegbu and Dr Donald Peterson.
“We have dotted the ‘Is’ and crossed the ‘Ts’ towards making our film premiere one that guests and movie lovers will remember for its class and glamour,” she said.
Abani revealed that the film which is her first as a producer, was made to remind mothers of their role in the home and the society at large.
She said: “Power of Tomorrow which I also love to call Mirror In The Sun is an eye opener. It is a story of what some women in politics have to do in order to succeed. Yes, I believe in gender equality but I also believe that a woman should first be a woman. Women should never neglect their role in the family and society, just because they want to make it in life or politics. I don’t think that a woman should go all the way like, Mrs. Allen, the main character in my movie did.
“The lead character in my movie killed her husband, killed her daughter and sadly, she still didn’t become a senator. This woman (Mrs. Allen) had to get her husband out of the way after she started having using sex as a tool to further her political career. Of course, her husband who discovered she had become unfaithful wouldn’t take her infidelity, so he had to be eliminated. Even with all her desperate actions, she died without her dream of becoming a senator coming to reality.”
