IGP to Abuja drivers: Register your vehicles or face clamp down

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase has given Abuja commercial drivers two weeks ultimatum to get proper form of identification for their vehicles or face clamp down.

The IGP explained that the move is necessary following the rate of insecurity in the country.

This was disclosed in Abuja Thursday when the national excos of the National Union of Road Transport workers visited him in the Force Headquarters.

The IGP said: “For now, the clamp down is restricted to Abuja, and it is because Abuja is more cosmopolitan and the complaints we receive are more prevalent in Abuja and that is why we want to clamp down on Abuja quickly before it becomes a nuisance.

“In Abuja, I think we have a very serious problem, there are lots of kabu kabu drivers on the highway and you will agree with me that when we have issues of insurgency that we have in this country, it could be very dangerous so there must be a way of attacking those vehicles that are not properly registered to avoid calamity.

He added: “‎I give the drivers  the grace of two weeks, after two weeks, we will start clamping down on all vehicles that ply the highway in FCT without proper identification because we want orderliness.‎ The drivers should either use a particular colour of paint or stickers as form of identification so that our work will be easy for us.

The IGP while sympathising with the Union over the lives of members that were lost in areas hit by insurgency urged the union to also embrace security in motorparks.

The Police boss said: “Motor parks should ensure that members register and that when it is time for them to renew their papers that they are also guided on how to go about it. We will also ensure that the parks are well secured.

Responding, the President of NURTW, Alhaji Najeem Yasin assured the IGP that his members will comply with the directive.

“We can achieve it in two weeks because we have the members and they will call all other members in FCT to order.”

APC, Peterside to tribunal: ask INEC to move election materials to Abuja for inspection

Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate in the last election, Dr Dakuku Peterside, have begun moves to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to produce the materials used in the election to Abuja for inspection.

The party and its candidate have filed a motion to that effect before the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

They said their decision was informed by INEC’s continued refusal to obey the order for inspection made by the tribunal on June 11.

APC and Peterside are challenging the outcome of the election, in which INEC declared Nyesome Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the winner.

They said the election did not comply with the Electoral Act (EA), INEC’s Electoral Guideline and manual made pursuant to the EA.

The petitioners had complained to the tribunal that INEC was working with the PDP and Wike to frustrate the inspection of the election materials.

Following the complaint, the tribunal, in a ruling on July 9, restated its order, which it said was directed at INEC.

The petitioners’ lawyer, Akin Olujinmi (SAN), informed the court yesterday that INEC refused to allow the inspection of the materials it used for the election.

“Your lordship made an order on June 11 for the inspection of election materials. The order was restated on July 9. That order has not been obeyed by INEC,” Olujinmi said.

After the tribunal’s proceedings, the eminent lawyer addressed reporters.

He said: “We have now applied that INEC be compelled to bring the election materials to Abuja for inspection since they have made inspection impossible in Rivers State.

ID cards for 400 IDPs in Abuja

No fewer than 400 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) yesterday received identity cards.

The distribution carried out at the Area 1 and New Kuchingoro camps in Abuja was courtesy of the South African High Commission in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Institute (NMI).

Some of the details in the cards include names of the displaced persons, photographs, states of origin, ID numbers, signatures and location of camps.

The South African High Commissioner in Nigeria Ambassador Mnguni Lulu said the gesture was in commemoration of the 2015 Nelson Mandela International Day Celebration.

The envoy, who also presented IDP Support Booth to the camps, said the embassy and NMI would replicate the gesture in other camps within the city so that the displaced persons do not feel marginalised.

“We have given the IDP Support Booth which they will use as an administration centre so that whoever wants to communicate with them knows where to find them.

“We also help provided generators for them to have electricity; we also brought in some food stuff with the truck here.”

Lulu, who said South African would continue to support Nigeria in its effort at tackling the Boko Haram menace, stated the visit to the camps was to improve the quality of lives of the displaced and to promote the legacy of Mandela.

The Director, Development, Nelson Mandela Institute, Olajide Babatunde, said the institute would ensure that the children in this camp are educated.

According to him: “We are building a university in Abuja called the African University of Science and Technology.

“Mandela believed that education is the great engine of human development,” Babatunde said.

The Chairman of IDPs in Area 1, Ibrahim Ahmadu, expressed gratitude to the South African High Commission and the Nelson Mandela Institute.

He appealed to the federal government to sustain the fight against the insurgency so that normalcy will be restored to the troubled spots.

  • I’m loyal to Buhari’s course, says Tinubu

I’m loyal to Buhari’s course, says Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night declared that he is loyal to the the course of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said there is no truth in the speculations of rift between them, adding that they understand one another.

Tinubu spoke with State House correspondents after joining other Nigerians to break the Muslim fast with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, the APC can’t perform majic and clean up the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 16 years’ mess in 30 days.

Stressing that party supremacy must be upheld, he said that the party must have disciplined leadership and followers.

On the alleged rift with the President, he said: “I have no demand than the party. If you understand what party politics is all about and leadership is all about, it is about loyalty and commitments to the values that leadership believes in.

“I believe in what President believes. I respect him and I stand firmly loyal to his course. So, you can go to any length of speculation that you might want. I have not responded to all of that because I understand the president and the president understands me clearly.” he said

Asked to comment on the crisis in the National Assembly, Tinubu said: “That is an area I am very cautious of my position and my utterances. I still want to keep my side of interpretation or analysis to me to be able to achieve a resolution of the matter as quickly as possible.

“I am backing all the president has carefully enumerated and articulated to the party. The party is supreme, the party must have disciplined leadership and followers. The party’s process must be respected because that is the confidence and the trust of the people.”

He however pointed out that conflicts should be expected in every political environment.

“That is politics. And conflict resolution mechanism will be applied to resolve all problems. So, we are there, there is honour in every struggle, in every competition and there must be honour in victory too.” He added

On how prepared the APC is to avoid the mistakes of PDP, he said: “We are different. We cannot be PDP, we are APC. We will not repeat their mistakes. We know their mistakes, we know their errors. And we understand what Nigerians wanted. Nigerians gave this party a mandate because of our manifesto.

“We are pro-people, we are progressives. We have had a conservative government in the last 16 years. This is progressives party, just coming barely 30 days. We understand the hope of Nigerians and we respect that hope. We understand the expectation of Nigerians. We believe in that expectation and in our promise of prosperity to come. We will not change that,” Tinubu said.

    Abuja hosts parley on Epa

An international conference to examine the merits or otherwise of Africa signing the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) is scheduled to hold in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, July 28 -29. Organised by the leading pan-African newsmagazine Africa Today, the conference hopes to beam the spotlight on the agreement that has split the continent into two: those countries wanting to sign and those not wanting to unless the continent gets a more favourable deal.

Publisher of Africa Today, Mr Kayode Soyinka, announcing this in Abuja, said the conference, which will take place at the Transcorp Hilton, is expected to put the EPA on the front burner of national discourse, enlighten ordinary citizens and business people, examine the agreement’s pros and cons as they affect Nigeria’s economy and those of the countries in the west African (ECOWAS) sub-region and, indeed, Africa.”

Soyinka said the EPA remained a thorny trade issue between Europe and Africa. The deadline for signing the agreement was missed last October and Europe is insisting it would not come back to the negotiation table.

Speakers for the two-day conference, which will take place at the Transcorp Hilton, include emeritus professor of economics Ademola Oyedeji and president, National Association of Nigerian Traders, Ken Ukaoha .

  • WTC Abuja: An edifice like no other

WTC Abuja: An edifice like no other

The first phase of the ambitious N200 billion World Trade Centre (WTC) in Abuja, is billed for completion in December. It promises to be the tallest skyscraper in Africa, promoting and inspiring Abuja’s promising future. It also has enormous business growth potential, reports Assistant Editor MUYIWA LUCAS.

The skyline of the Federal Capital Territory is changing. This is because rising from the ashes of the former Bakassi market in the Central Business Area in the City, is a 37-storey WTC towers, a multi-use complex, comprising luxury, high rise office towers, luxury apartments, conference facilities, capital city shopping mall and entertainment facilities.

The market was demolished in 2003 by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). The site was handed to the Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL) to develop as a befitting world-class shopping mall.

The project, which started in 2011, is being promoted by First Continental Properties Limited, a subsidiary of Churchgate Group, for over N200 billion. The funding is being raised through private funds as well as local and foreign financial institutions’ support. Now, the first phase, which may become the reference point for distinct address for residential, commercial and office space, is billed for completion in December.

The project sits on 6,102 hectares on Constitution Avenue in the Central Business Area, making it strategically positioned in the heart of  Abuja, and leads into the city from the airport. It is adjacent to the main Railway Station as well as the Central Business Transport Terminal.

A ring road is also being constructed at the site, giving it access to the centre of the city.

sConsultants to the project include Churchgate Construction Company Limited, as the main contractor, while the international consultants include Woods Bagot Limited (Concept Architect) and WSP Consultants (Structural Consultant and MEP Consultant). The local consultants include Messrs Hancock Ogundiya & Partners (MEP & C&S Consultant) and Space Designers Limited (local architectural).

The Group Managing Director, Churchgate Group, Mr. Vinay Mahtani, explained that the WTC Abuja is an eight-tower complex made up of luxury residences, offices, apartments, a five-star hotel and a 40,000 sq metres Capital City Mall.

Other are a leisure centre, cinema and convention facility. The project, he said, offers unparallelled luxury and comfort to those seeking a lifestyle above the rest, as each building within the WTC complex has been designed to appeal to global businesses that require premier services, such as meeting space, topnotch security and the highest standard of interior finishes.

The General Manager, Operations,  Ibukun Adeogun, said the WTC master plan provides for public gatherings, services and amenities and will rank among landmark destinations of the world.

That is not all. On completion, Mahtani says immense benefits would accrue to the tenants and occupants of the complex. For instance, the WTC will become a member of the World Trade Centres Association (WTCA) with 330 locations worldwide, thereby, providing a platform for its occupants to connect to the largest global business network of over 750,000 entrepreneurs.

“As a tenant at World Trade Centre, Abuja, you will automatically become a member of the World Trade Centre Club and can draw on the credibility and brand of the organisation – which can open doors to new market of export. Also, organisations within the WTC network can enter new markets quickly and without excessive investment by making the WTC their ‘outsourced international business department, ” he said.

Mahtani added that businesses within the WTC network would avoid the pitfalls of country-specific tax and legal regulations through training, advice and business referrals delivered by WTC professionals and members, including providing opportunities of holding meetings abroad in one of the centres of the organisation and participating in WTC conferences, events, and fairs globally.

Although the WTC project is still developing,  the promoters said many multinational businesses have signified interests in occupying both residential and commercial spaces in the complex. They include are oil firms, international and local blue chip companies. Rents are yet to be fixed, it was learnt.

Laudable as the project is, it has not been a smooth sail. Though the first phase was  scheduled for completion in 2013, this was not to be. Due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’, it was shifted to its new date.

Mahtani said certain areas of the project had to be redesigned to achieve the desired level of quality and standard. Also, the contractors of the National and Light Railway project, while integrating the WTC project into their plan, allegedly could not meet the previous date.

Again, there was the issue of maintenance. Across the country, sights of a once magnificent edifice in decrepit states are common. Mahtani, however, allayed such fears. “Churchgate Group has the credibility of maintaining all its skyline buildings to international standard. The clientele base of Churchgate include numerous multinationals who expect a high level of quality and standard, which we have been able to successfully provide since the inception of our properties.  We pride ourselves on the level of service we are able to offer to our customers,” he assured.

He added that his firm has built some of Nigeria’s architectural masterpieces, including the Churchgate Tower in Lagos, which is the first building to be constructed from steel and glass, and the Oceanview apartments, Lagos.

Yet, stakeholders are hopeful of the project. An Abuja resident, with huge interests in real estate, Alhaji Ibrahim Kareem, wants the project be used as a model to implement some upcoming private partnership project in the FCT.

A former Minister of the FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, assured that because of the high profile and global scope of the WTC project, the Territory Authority requested the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to process a diplomatic status for it.

True, the journey to find investors for the project was difficult. This was because attempts by the AICL to get partners failed before the selection of First Continental Properties Limited, a subsidiary of Churchgate Investment Company Limited in 2009.

“The Churchgate Group emerged as the preferred bidder through an open and keenly contested process. Our company was adjudged credible to develop the WTC project because of our longstanding track record. Already, the project has provided job opportunities for about 600 inhabitants of Abuja and the satellite towns with the figure expected to rise to 1,500 as work progresses,” Mahtani added.

  • Patience Jonathan’s ex-security aide killed in Abuja

Police officer, Tamuno Jacob Igbomie, who was Principal Security Officer (PSO) to former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, was shot dead by unknown assailants last Friday on Airport Road, Abuja.

The body of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was discovered in his Honda Accord car, after gunmen said to be “assassins shot him at a close range in his car”.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the killing. He added that investigation has started  to arrest the assailants.

“Yes, a DSP attached to the villa was killed last week Friday. Investigation has started to find out the people behind the murder. No arrest has been made yet,” Ojukwu said yesterday.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Anjuguri Manzah, said the FCT Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, had ordered an investigation into the tragic incident.

A police source said his body “was found early in the morning. But surprisingly, all his phones, wallet and other personal belongings were intact in the car, which engine was left running”.

It was learnt that the late Igbomie, who hailed from Okrika, Bayelsa State, served at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command before being deployed to the Presidential Villa as Patience’s  Aide-De-Camp (ADC) when Jonathan was the vice president.

“He was later appointed as the PSO to Patience when her husband became the President,” the source said.

Another source added: “Tamuno must have been killed by hired assassins because they did not steal anything from his car. We met his phones and wallet with him when his body was found in the car with the engine running.

“He was shot in the night and his body was found early in the morning. We don’t know if he was killed over a business transaction or disagreement with someone.”

It was gathered that  the late police officer was just redeployed to the FCT Police Command.

The late Igbomie was married and had two children.
