  • 2019: Nigerians urged to vote candidates of their choice

A civil society organization, No Sidon Look, has urged Nigerians to come out and vote massively for the candidates of their choice during next month’s general election.

Director- General of the organization, Portrait Peterson, made the appeal at a briefing in Abuja.

He urged electorates to come out and participate in the electoral process in order to usher in candidates who will best represent them.

According to him, the era of sitting down and not participating in the electoral process was over.

He said: “Ours is a simply matter, our love for our people and our country and I am sure that we express the concern of every young Nigerian, every young entrepreneur who has suffered badly over the last couple of years.

“My people, this is the time to rise up and take our stand. Rise up and take our positions in our country. This country is ours and we must make it better for all of us and even for our unborn children.

“As this election is about to start in February, let us carry our PVCs, clean it up and go out and vote. Do not say that your vote won’t count because that’s what these dubious politicians want. Come out and vote and I promise you that your vote will produce the right result in 2019.

“Let us all go out and vote for the candidate we want and after we have finished voting for our candidates – whether for Presidency, governorship, senatorial or House of Representatives, we must ensure that our votes count.”

Also, the Director, Admin, Christal Etta, stated that it was only through voting that electorates could usher in new leaders.

“Do not sit down and keep drooling on the past. Get up on your feet. If you don’t go out to vote, these people who are there will always keep being there and keep doing the wrong and still committing the ills that bring down the Nigerian society and reputation.

“For every young person, forget about what has happened in the past, this is a new slate and we are starting all over and we are encouraging every young person to stand up, get your PVCs if you are registered and your vote will definitely count,” he said.

  • 2019: learn from consequences of 1966 civil war – Onaiyekan

*Blood of every Nigerian is precious, don’t allow it to be spilled – Onaiyekan

*Boko Haram: Don’t sweep causes of soldiers death under the carpet – Onaiyekan

With the February general elections fast approaching, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, on Sunday warned that Nigeria should learn from the lessons and consequences of the 1966 civil war.

He gave the warning while delivering the message during the Interdenominational Church Service for the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Abuja.

January 15th every year is marked as Armed Forces Remembrance Day to honour fallen heroes and the living soldiers.

Onaiyekan also pointed out that the blood of every Nigerian is precious and should not be allowed to be spilled even as the February general elections draw near.

He said “Today, we cannot forget that so many have died in our series of self-inflicted killings, in the shameful chain of coups and counter coups. This seems to be the case of the untenable moral lie that might is right. In the logic of these often gory events, those who succeed rule, and grab the highest national honours.

“Those who fail face the firing squad, after secret trials. The issue of right or wrong intentions is conveniently swept aside. We hope we have by now learned our lesson and that we will no longer allow such misuse of our Armed Forces and our military resources.

“I do not know why January 15th has been chosen as the Armed Forces Remembrance Day. But to many people like me, it brings strong memories of that critical day, January 15th, 1966. We must learn lessons from that historic event which marked the beginning of military rule in our country.

“We are still to fully assess, judge and comprehend its deep meaning and consequences for our nation. It started a chain of dramatic events, including the three years civil war which wasted the lives of millions of Nigerians, combatants and non-combatants, men, women and children.

“January 15th should remind us of many pertinent lessons for our present and for our future. Perhaps, the greatest of these lessons is that morally, the end does not justify a wrong means. A good end must be pursued by a good means.” he said

He went on “We cannot undertake a national revolution by murdering unarmed persons in their beds at night. We cannot successfully prosecute a ‘war against indiscipline’ by locking up innocent people for months in dungeons without legal recourse.

“For the same reason, we cannot hope to win the ‘war against corruption’ by ignoring or bye passing basic human rights to the rule of law.

“Furthermore, we must imbibe the lessons of the instability of injustice, the futility of violence, and the imperative of personal conversion and social moral revolution.” he stated

Onaiyekan also warned the security agencies not to put their powers behind injustices and bad governance.

He noted that the responsibility of the Armed Forces is to protect the nation and not to attack anybody.

According to him, keeping an army is not the best defense for any nation, but maintaining good governance and justice.

He said “Our Armed Forces are under the Ministry of Defence. It is important to note that our Armed Forces are not under the Ministry of Aggression. Therefore, our soldiers have volunteered to defend the nation and not to attack anyone or oppress anybody.”

Onaiyekan also called on the Federal Government not to sweep the causes of the killings of soldiers in the war against Boko Haram under the carpet.

“We remember especially those who have died in the present on-going conflict in the northeast, whether they perished in combat or in an ambush, or as a result of alleged inadequate arms or culpable poor military tactics.

“Complaints in this regard are rife, and they should not be silenced or swept under the carpet. Rather all such complaints ought to be properly investigated and everyone found responsible held accountable, no matter how high up in rank and position. The blood of every Nigerian is precious and must not be carelessly wasted.”

Stressing that Nigerian Armed Forces have been actively involved in promoting world peace, he said that Nigeria’s responsibility for world peace should start from ‘around us.”

While calling for good remuneration for the Armed Forces so that they can perform their responsibilities better, he also urged the government to timely pay the full pensions of retired security personnel.

The failure to pay the pensions of the security personnel, he said, was a national shame that should never have been allowed to occur.

  • Buhari meets Ooni, Yoruba monarchs in Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met with Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi and representatives of traditional rulers from the South West at the State House, Abuja.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, the Ooni said the meeting had nothing to do with politics.

He said the meeting was to tell the President the importance of including more youths and women in government and to thank him for what he has been doing for the South West.

Ooni also said the meeting was to ask for more developmental projects for the zone and appreciate Buhari for the cordial relationship between him and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is from the South West.

Speaking further on their mission to the State House, with the general elections fast approaching, Ooni said: “We are not here for politics.

“We are father to all, very close to our people; the only politics we understand is politics of development.

“We are here to talk about development for our people in all the states of the south western Nigeria.

“We are here to point out the good things Mr. President has been doing especially the cordial relationship with the Vice President who is from the south western part of the country.

“Historically we know the issues of presidents and Vice Presidents in Nigeria, we have not experienced such.

“We are here to further request from Mr. President good things that we want in our various states. When you are doing good, we will first of all appreciate the good things before asking for more. What is critical for us here is to champion development for our people.

“We spoke about the inclusion of youths in the current government and also women inclusion.

“In terms of demography of voting pattern, we know that everything rests on the shoulders of Nigerian youths, we want to see them in this cabinet.

“So we are here not to be misconstrued for politics, we are here to be identified with development and progress of our nation more especially south west.”

He advised youths to ensure they vote according to their consciences and not allow themselves to be used by the political class to cause trouble during the elections.

He also said the country was bigger than any President, stressing that a President has a maximum of eight years to stay in office while the country will always remain.

According to him: “Even we traditional rulers that are very fortunate to still be alive, we have experienced many presidents.

“Many governors, a president cannot use more than eight years that is in the constitution of Nigeria.

“So, Nigeria is greater than the president. Your maximum tenure is eight years.

On the demands they made before the President, the Ooni said: “We have already passed our demands across, each state has peculiar needs.

“What is critical is that south west accommodates everyone in the country.

“That is the only zone that you can call a typical Nigeria because is a blend of everybody, all the tribes of this nation you will find them in the south western Nigeria.

“So as result, we play pivotal role in anything that has to do with decision making in Nigeria.

“As a zone we are even the second largest in terms of voting demography and numbers.

“So critically south Western Nigeria plays a very vital role and we as traditional rulers we are the ones to douse the tension.

“We don’t pray for any tension but we are ready, we have all decided to work together to douse any tension. Whoever that comes is the grace of God,” he said

According to him, President Buhari recognized the pivotal role of the South West and its relevance in the nation’s polity.

He said: “We all remember that over the years we’ve learnt from a lot of very regrettable mistakes that led to incidents that transformed the way we do business in this industry.

“It is important that we always remember that one mistake in the oil and gas industry is sufficient to wipe out the entire business. It is as bad as an aircraft crash.”

Continuing, he said: “As operators, we have a responsibility to support the efforts of agencies like DPR, PPPRA (Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency), PEF (Petroleum Equalisation Fund) who daily drive compliance in the industry.”

The NNPC boss also stated it was important for regulators to always enforce regulations, because without enforcement they will never achieve full compliance.

Abuja Zonal Operations Controller for DPR, Abdul Abba, said the gathering was meant to bring together major players in the downstream oil and gas sector to review 2018 operational challenges and set out new plan for 2019.

He noted: “We have seen where lack of compliance to the statutory regulations with respect to depots, filling stations and LPG outlets has led to huge losses in investment, lives and degradation of environment.”

Abba also stated that the agency had taken measures to ensure that illegal retail outlets were regularised.
