  • C/River guber: Court rejects Usani’s claim to APC ticket

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Apo, Abuja has rejected the claim by Niger Delta Affairs Minister, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani to being the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State.

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, a judgment on Monday, dismissed a suit filed by Usani, in which he had, among others, sought to be declared the actual winner of the party’s governorship primary held late last year.

Justice Adeniyi, who resolved all the issues raised by Usani for determination against him, noted that documentary evidence tendered by the claimant and facts in his supporting affidavits showed vital legal flaws, which the court could not overlook.

The judge noted, for instance, that while Usani claimed to have won the primary conducted on September 30, 2018, a report of the primary, issued by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INRC) in Cross River, tendered by the claimant, showed that the primary was held between September 30 and October 1, 2018.

Justice Adeniyi also noted that by the documentary evidence tendered by Usani, it was clear that the primary he claimed to have won was an illegal one, because it was conducted solely by the Cross River State’s APC Executive which has no power, under the law to conduct state governorship primary.

Usani had, in the suit, prayed the court to compel the APC to send his name to INEC, in the place of Senator John Owan Enoh, as its governorship candidate for Cross River State.

  • Buhari to Christian group: Your prayers will make us victorious

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday played host to the leadership of Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria at State House, Abuja, commending the group for upholding the administration and the government in prayers, particularly as the general elections approach.

He said “I am very grateful for this visit. God will answer our prayers. With your prayers, we will go into the field, and be victorious.

“Your good intentions and prayers are appreciated. This is what is expected of institutions working for God.” he said

Buhari, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said he was glad that the church lauded the good work being done by government in the areas of infrastructure, anti-corruption, and security.

“It will encourage us to do more. We have no other country than Nigeria, and we must do the best for her. I said it more than a generation ago. Thank you for identifying with our objectives.” he said

Leader of the delegation, His Most Eminence, Prophet (Dr) Solomon Adegboyega Alao, told President Buhari to remain resolute, particularly in the war against corruption.

He said: “We anticipate that corruption, which is killing Nigeria, may fight back, but you will prevail because majority of Nigerians are with you.”

The visitors asked the President to use his good offices to ensure the release of Leah Sharibu, being held captive by Boko Haram for refusing to renounce her faith; canvassed a level playing field for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct free and fair polls; and a consideration of the clamour for restructuring of the Federation.

Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, the Spiritual Father of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church Worldwide Prophet Samuel Abidoye said “To see our president and to wish him a pleasant 2019. And to offer our own suggestions on how to govern the country because if he succeeds we will all succeed and to offer him our prayers.

On the advise given to the President, he said “First of all we are aware that Mr. President is very passionate about credible and fair elections, we assured him that we will back him up to that extent.

“We told him to pursue the Anti-Corruption vigorously we assured him that we will back him up on that. Corruption is killing Nigeria and we know unless we kill corruption very urgently it will destroy this country. We assured him of our support at all times.

  • Abuja three years without bombs and still counting

I sat in anxiety as the yuletide season approached us. Thoughts ran riots in my head. I played out many scenarios as regards the likelihood of a disruption of the festive season by men of the underworld, as in times past. I refreshed my memory to the bomb blasts the rocked previous years on Christmas day and in churches and recreational centres in the FCT and its environs. I could only but nod my head in absolute disbelief.
Disbelief you might want to ask. Yes, I meant every bit of the word disbelief because of how time flies and indeed how when there is a will, there would always be a way. I counted three with my fingers (2016, 2017 and 2018) and not a single disruption of the yuletide season in Abuja. Not a single bomb detonated anywhere. There was no uproar amongst merry seekers in recreational spots all around the FCT and its environs. People went about their normal businesses without fear. This is unprecedented.
I have longed told all that cared to listen that God indeed loves Nigeria. The outcome of the 2015 elections that produced the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was indeed a divine intervention in my opinion. I believe the discerning minds would agree with. It is also not by accident that we have had three consecutive years of peace and tranquillity in the festive season in Abuja. And it is also not luck. Some people somewhere have paid the price, and this brings me to the very essence of this piece.
In some quarters, some have always questioned the constitutional role of the Nigeria Army in the sustenance of peace in any given society. They have also erroneously believed that the role of the army in Nigeria should and always be confined to the barracks. They haven’t given a thought that the enthronement of internal security and peace falls within the purview of the Nigeria Army. And this much they have strived to achieve from time immemorial. But the last three years have seen a more proactive and robust Nigeria Army in the enthronement of internal security and peace in Nigeria, and Abuja is just a case study.
If anyone told me some four years ago that there would be such a time where the security architecture in Abuja would be top-notch that people would go about their various business without fear, I would doubt it because of the reign of terror that has accompanied festive periods in the FCT. This fact is corroborated with the way and manner many people relocated from Abuja due to the high level of insecurity. I recall I stumbled on a piece written by a former Abuja resident who had to relocate in the wake on the high level of uncertainty but recently returned to Abuja.
As mentioned earlier, these things didn’t happen by chance, somewhere and somehow the price was paid just like Jesus Christ paid the price for us sinners on the cross of Calvary. If no one gave credit to President Muhammadu Buhari, I would give him high credit. If no one would also appreciate the efforts of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, I and my household would appreciate him. Some might be wondering why I am particular about President Muhammadu Buhari and Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai. Some might also be wondering what it was a spectacular thing that they have done to deserve such high praises. But I would say that, and just like I have always said that the solution to the myriads of challenges facing Nigeria is when our political leaders exhibit that political will. And once that is done, there would always be a way.
And one of such ways that President Muhammadu Buhari has exhibited a political will is in the appointment of the service chiefs, especially that of the Nigeria Army, which has never been so engaged in the enthronement of internal security in the annals of the country as in the past three years. In the past three years, the Nigeria Army has stretched beyond the elastic limit with various operations around the country simultaneously. But yet it didn’t flop. From the ongoing war against Boko Haram terrorist in North East Nigeria to the militant Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) in South East, and others too numerous to mention. The Nigeria Army has stayed true to its constitutional responsibility.
They have sacrificed their all to keep the country safe and secured. They have decimated the Boko Haram, even at great sacrifice with the number of casualties recorded. While this is unfortunate, it just goes with the terrain in warfare situations. They have also kept other violent groups in check. They have done quite a lot to keep the country safe and secured. And like I mentioned earlier, when there is a will, there would always be a way.
In my opinion, the best we can do in the very circumstances is to continually remind the troops that they are the real national heroes of Nigeria. And their sacrifices would never be in vain. For every night they patrol and lie in trenches keeping watch over us as we go to sleep, for the long days and months they spend away from their families and loved ones, every tears they shed for Nigeria, the majority of Nigeria and Nigerians would forever appreciate. It is only those that are ignorant that would not see this great work. And it also those that are myopic that would not agree that indeed President Muhammadu Buhari is God sent to rescue Nigeria from the brinks of collapse. If not for anything, let us learn to call a spade and spade in Nigeria. This is just a word of encouragement to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai and his soldiers.

  • APC strikes Atiku for attack on Buhari’s anti-graft war

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar launched yesterday a blistering attack on President Muhammadu Buhari, advising him not to blame the “system” for what he called his failure to fight corruption.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate wrote to the President, commending him, “for admitting that he failed in fighting corruption.”

But the All Progressives Congress  (APC) responded in an equally derisive tone,  smacking Atiku for not facing his campaign and exhibiting “signs of depression”.

In a letter titled: “President Buhari, don’t blame the Nigerian system for your failure”, the former vice president faulted Buhari for blaming his “failure to tackle corruption head-on: on the system.

The letter, dated, yesterday, reads: “My attention has been drawn to a statement by President Muhammadu Buhari on the occasion of a Christmas homage paid on him by members of the Federal Capital Territory Community in which he blamed his inability to fight corruption on the Nigerian system.

“According to the President, his administration is slow in fighting corruption because the system is slow.

“My immediate response to this is to commend President Buhari for admitting that he has failed in fighting corruption. The President has just corroborated Transparency International, whose latest Corruption Perception Index shows that Nigeria is more corrupt today than it was under the previous administration, having moved 12 places backwards in the CPI, from 136 in 2014 to 148 this year.”

Atiku said his point of departure was in the President blaming his failure on the system.

He said: “I disagree. The system has challenges, yes, but where there is political will, the system can make progress.”

Recalling his tenure as vice president between 1999 and 2007, Atiku said: “We used that same system to speedily convict no less a personality than an Inspector-General of Police, and several others, including cabinet ministers and other high officials.

“Mr. President, the problem with your anti-corruption war is not the system. You are the problem!

“The system allows you to arrest, try and convict your former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who was fingered in a major corruption case, but you chose to let him go scot free and you demonstrated your tolerance for his corruption by giving him a prominent role in your re-election campaign and recently welcoming him to the Presidential Villa with open arms.

“The system allowed you to arrest, try and convict Abdulrasheed Maina, the biggest-ever alleged thief in our civil service history, who is suspected of looting the pensions of millions of aged Nigerians.

“Yet, you chose not to go that route, preferring instead to recall him, reinstate and double promote him while giving him armed guards to move about.

“The system allows you to probe the $25 billion NNPC contracts awarded without due process, but you chose to bury the matter under the carpet, hoping the Nigerian people will forget about that grand scale alleged looting exposed by a leaked memo from a member of your cabinet.

“Finally, nothing in the system stops you from telling Nigerians who owns the billions found in an Ikoyi apartment.

“Based on the above statement of facts, I will not allow you to make Nigeria the scapegoat for your failure. Your failure is personal, and not national.”

Atiku faulted the President for allegedly branding Nigerian youths as lazy while defending a governor who was allegedly caught on camera receiving bribes.

Atiku went on: “The system did not stop the EFCC from charging the opposition Governor of Akwa-Ibom, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, as a co-accused in the case involving the NBA Chairman, Mr Paul Usoro (SAN). Contrast this with the treatment meted out to Governor Umar Ganduje of the ruling All Progressive Congress.”

APC’s National Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu sparked Atiku for his letter . He urged the PDP presidential candidate to tell Nigerians why they should elect him rather than dissipate energy on the ruling party and its presidential candidate.

Issa-Onilu said: “The PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is exhibiting early signs of depression, resulting from obvious frustration. Consequently, he is unable to focus on his campaign. Otherwise, he should tell Nigerians why a discredited person like him should be elected as president instead of raising puerile allegations daily.

“President Buhari and APC, not his programmes for the country, appear to be his main campaign issues. Nigerians are desirous of a campaign that focuses on issues that matter to them.

“For Atiku and his PDP co-travellers, the only interest is to grab power and continue where they stopped in their avarice. The APC administration is eager to showcase the impressive achievements we have recorded in the last three and half years. This is the campaign that matters to us and this is what Nigerians are interested in.

“The trajectory is exciting as we see a brighter future shaping up. We won’t yield to the PDP’s shenanigans. The obvious strategy of the PDP is to truncate the country’s journey towards economic buoyancy and social stability. We will not play the PDP’s game. PDP is acting an anti-people’s script.

“President Buhari remains unshaken by the desperate efforts being made by Atiku and the PDP to blackmail the APC government. Everyone who was involved in corrupt practices would be brought to justice.  PDP is not offering any alternative to the progressive course this government is pursuing.

“It is actually apparent that the party is not contesting the 2019 elections to redeem itself, least of doing any good for the country, but simply to seize power to escape justice for the grevious crimes committed against the people of this country. Nigerians won’t be fooled by the rapacious PDP gang. Never!”

  • Buhari: System, not me, responsible for slow anti-graft war

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday blamed the democratic system for the seemingly slow pace of the anti-corruption war.

The system, he reiterated, is responsible for the slow progress of the war not he.

The President spoke in Abuja when he received the Federal Capital Territory community on Christmas homage at his official residence.

“Fighting Corruption, yes, we are slow because the system is slow.

“It’s not Baba that is slow but it is the system so I am going by this system and I hope we will make it,” he said

The President stressed: “I told you what I did when I was in uniform but now when I have to go by this system (democracy) where people have to be arrested and then prosecuted, taken to court and then with evidence, we will collect back what they had taken illegally and for doing that, people are calling me Baba go slow.

“I am going slowly but whatever the case, I will not stop pointing fingers at those who have abused trust by taking money that does not belong to them.

“I will keep on trying to do my best for this country and get back what belongs to the country.

“We are doing to do the roads, revive the railway and electricity with the little resources at our disposal.”

He said he will embark on aggressive reelection campaign soonest based on the three issues that got him elected in 2015.

These issues anti-corruption war, tackling insecurity and improving the economy, according to him, are still relevant today.

The campaign, he said, will start by visits to each of the six geo-political zones of the country.

According to him: “The party nominated me and I will contest. We are watching the Independent National Electoral Commission very seriously and we are going out very soon we will go from geo-political zone to geo-political zone to remind the people of our promises in 2015; three fundamental things, security, because you have to secure the country before you can govern it and talking about what we have done regarding securing the country, the people of the North-east know better.

“The three fundamental things we campaigned with are still very relevant. On improving the economy, which we are still going to explore, we have done well in agriculture and those who embraced farming are not regretting it and we have also addressed unemployment and we are very lucky, through that we are now attaining food security.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello, said the FCT community was happy with the performance of President Buhari in office and pledged to support him massively for another term of office.

He said “We pray that God Almighty to continue to grant you good health, strength, capacity, ability and patience to continue to lead us to the Promised Land.

“On behalf of the FCT we appreciate you for the good works you are doing for the territory, just last week you commissioned for us a new airport terminal and so many road projects that are going on in Abuja and we feel highly delighted to be hosting you here and it’s my honour on behalf of the FCT community I want to assure you that we are solidly behind you and by the grace of God we look forward to you spending another four years in the state house so that you can truly make Abuja the city of our dream because we want Abuja to be among the 20 best cities in the world in the next few years to come and I think that is possible.”

Primate of the Anglican Communion, Nigeria Reverend Nicholas Okoh congratulated the President for overcoming his health challenges and said all citizens of the country are grateful to God for that.

The cleric noted the spirit of unity among followers of different religions in the Federal capital Territory is exemplary and should be replicated in all parts of the country.

He said religious leaders will continue to work for peace and harmony in order to sustain peace in the country.

The delegation comprised religious leaders and traditional rulers as well as top functionaries of the Federal capital Territory administration.

  • Minister: only 35% of infrastructure developed in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Muhammed Bello has revealed that only 35% of Abuja’s infrastructure has been developed.

Bello said that the FCT was projected with a 3.1 million population when fully built within a projected 25-year-period.

He added that the capital city is the fourth largest in the country and one of the fastest growing in Africa with over 2.75 million population squeezed within just two phases of the planned five phases.

Speaking at the commemoration of the movement of seat of government from Lagos to Abuja, he said that it has been 42 years since its creation and 27 years after the movement from Lagos.

The Minister who was represented by Executive Secretary, FCDA, Mr Umar Gambo Jibrin, urged everyone to see Abuja as a national heritage.

He said, “42 years since its creation and 27 years after the movement from Lagos, Abuja indeed, has come of age. It has surpassed Logos as the destination for foreign direct investments. It has become a major aviation and conference hub for West Africa. We have also inaugurated a modern light rail transport system that is the first of its kind in the sub-region and FCT, indeed, has become the melting pot of Nigeria that it was conceived to be.

“However, the city’s demographic expansion has proceeded beyond the protected growth plan when the city was founded. FCT was projected for 3.1 million population when fully built within a projected 25 years period.

“I urge all of us to see Abuja as our national heritage and join hands to protect it. This is because so much hes been invested in the building of the new capital -infrastructure, public utilities, institutions etc. Today, however, we are confronted with a new set of challenges, namely; vandalism of public utilities like manhole covers, bridge railings, transformers and streetlight poles and components, transformers as well as plain acts of sabotage and disobedience to rules that make for orderly living.”

Executive Head, Editorial Board, The Guardian newspaper, Mr Martins Oloja who was the keynote speaker of the occasion, stated that Abuja has been an orphan of some sort.

He said, “Abuja has been an orphan of some sort perhaps because of near absence of democracy in its governance processes. All the 36 states’ governors are elected but the ‘militicians’ who gave us this constitution made Abuja just a part of the Office of the President, no thanks to Sections 299-302 of the 1999 Constitution as amended. Even the original inhabitants, who have been agonising without organising well about unfulfilled promises since 1976, could not remember Abuja @ 40 and I said so in February 2016.”

  • Ndigbo celebrate new yam in Abuja

The socio-cultural pre-eminence of yam in Igbo world view was recently lavishly show-cased in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The occasion was the New Yam and end of year celebration hosted by the Igbo Community Assembly (ICA), in Kubwa one of the satellite town in Abuja.

It literally drew Igbo who is who in Abuja for an occasion adjudged not only as cultural soul lifting but also a unifying forum.

That yam plays unparalleled role in shaping the moral life of the Igbo, is never in doubt.

For the Igbo, yam, the tropical tuber and food crop, is king in all ramifications.

That may have informed the decision of the ICA to commission a talk shop during the occasion to further underscore the place of yam in Igbo socio-economic, cultural and linguistic expression.

The loftiness in which yam is held throughout Igbo land also manifests in proverbs, idioms and names of people of the area.

The occasion as packaged by Honourable Chidi Okparauwakwe, chairman of the organizing committee, started with the breaking of the kola nut after the national and Igbo anthems.

Igbo anthem was particularly rendered amidst pump and sophistry to remind the Igbo in the FCT the place of their birth.

Cultural and traditional dances of Igbo origin was used to extravagantly give colour to the occasion to the admiration of invitees.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Jonathan C. Okpara, who flagged off the celebration, was delighted that after some setbacks, Igbo in Kubwa could come together in unity.

The celebration, Okpara said, was a telling point that absolute peace and unity of purpose had been restored among the Igbo in FCT.

Eze Igbo of Kubwa, Jonathan Ozor Nweke and Eze Igbo Abuja, Eze Ibe Nwosu, graced the celebration in company with large members of their cabinet.

Chairman of ICA Kubwa, Nze Okechukwu Nzeukwu, seized the occasion with both hands to stress the fact that the Igbo should be good ambassadors of the Igbo nation wherever they might find themselves.

Nzeukwu did not forget to add that the Igbo wherever he is, should be politically conscious in his own interest.

The high point of the celebration was the breaking of heaps of roasted yam by the Eze Igbo, Kubwa.

Jonathan Ozor Nweke was supported by scores of other traditional leaders.

Red cap chiefs were not left.

Politicians, especially those contesting for positions in the 2019 elections, also came in their numbers.

One such politician was Archbishop L.B. Kawas, who is gunning for senatorial seat in the FCT. The occasion ended with award giving ceremony to deserving Nigerians including non-Igbo.

Engineer Mike Fuel Okere was one of the awardees with outstanding “Justice Personality” of the

  • 2019 elections: SOKAPU urges Nigerians to embrace peace

The Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) over the weekend urged its people and Nigerians to maintain a peaceful demeanour and conduct, especially during the forthcoming general elections.

The Chairman of the Abuja Chapter of SOKAPU, Mr. David Manya Dogo, who made this known at its end of year cultural festival to showcase her rich heritage and to engender togetherness and peace, explained that the event was to demonstrate and celebrate the Southern Kaduna People’s culture that is rich, friendly, and peaceful.

According to him, “The people of Southern Kaduna are known to be peaceful. We are a people of peace, social justice and equity; let us do whatever we can within our power to be peaceful.

“There cannot be development without peace. We have to be good example of peace for others to follow.

“The 2019 general election is by the corner; we therefore have a duty to appeal to our people to be part of the process. It is an opportunity to decide the kind of leadership we want for our country.

“If we fail to vote, we lose the right and power to challenge the leadership when they don’t serve us well.”

He further added that: “This event is an opportunity to fraternize and interact with one another; a number of us have not seen ourselves for a while. It is therefore, an opportunity to exchange ideas to help our people and move the country forward.

“Most tribes in Southern Kaduna are working towards developing their languages and putting it in writing. Some tribes already have their written languages, and many others are also doing that. We are encouraging people to develop their language into written formats.”

While encouraging the youths to play active roles in the political process of our country, Dogo said, “in the demographic of our country, the youths constitute of about 60% of our population, what it means is that the youths can take very far-reaching decisions when they decide to. You can change a lot of things as youths because of your number.”

The event which not only celebrates the culture of the Southern Kaduna people, but also to thank God for being faithful, kind and gracious, witnessed a colourful array and extravagant display of the interesting and rich cultural heritage of the Southern Kaduna people. Apart from the obvious and palpable display of cacophony amongst the people, they were equally entertained by traditional dances and music.

According to the Vice Chairman of the SOKAPU, Abuja Chapter, Mr. Jeremiah Peter, “We are here to tell the world what we can offer in terms of culture; culture being a uniting factor and medium for everyone to come together as one indivisible family.

“This event has benefited the people in the sense that it has united us and brought us closer to interface. It is a melting point.

“We also use this medium to identify some of our youths that are unemployed and see how we can help them get jobs. Also, those that are into business, we see how to support them with little finance to get started.”
