    15 die in Jigawa accident

    About 15 persons died in last Saturday’s accident involving a Sharon bus and a truck on Gujungu-Gumel road in Kaugama Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

    Police spokesman Abdu Jinjiri told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that the accident happened about 7.30 pm.

    According to him, the Sharon vehicle, which should contain seven passengers, was overloaded with 14 people.

    He said: “A seven passenger-capacity vehicle overloaded with 14 passengers rammed into a truck coming from the opposite direction on Gujungu-Gumel road.

    “Nine of the passengers died on the spot, while the rest were rushed to Gumel General Hospital. Nine men, including the driver of the Sharon bus, four women and two children, died.

    “It was possible the driver was over speeding but investigation will reveal the real cause of the accident.”

    The truck driver, 22, is in police custody, he added.

    Four persons died yesterday in an accident on the Ijebu-Ode stretch of the Lagos-Ore Expressway when a passenger bus crashed into the rear of a trailer.

    The accident, which occurred at 4.45 am, near the Ijebu-Ode old toll gate, involved a truck, registered XB 111 LSD, and a bus, LSD 766 XS.

    It was learnt that the parked truck was about returning to the road.

    A Mack truck, trying to avoid a collision, swerved into the fast lane just as a speeding bus rammed into it.

    The Ogun Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Clement Oladele, who confirmed the accident, said four persons died in the bus.

    He added: “The crash is suspected to have been caused by loss of control. A truck, which had parked, suddenly attempted to return to the road near the Ijebu-Ode toll gate.

    “A Mack truck, which was moving in the same direction, attempted to avoid colliding with the truck entering the road. The truck swerved away from the slow lane to the fast lane.

    “The bus travelling behind on the fast lane was too fast and could not stop. So, it ran into the truck that swerved from the slow to the fast lane.

    “The crash resulted in the death of the four passengers in the bus.”

    Oladele added that the remains of the victims have been taken to the morgue of State Hospital at Ijebu-Ode.

    He urged motorists to drive cautiously and obey traffic rules and regulations.

    The sector commander advised motorists to avoid joining a road suddenly or interfering with moving traffic.

    Eleven women returning from a wedding died on Saturday at an accident in Na’ibawa ‘Yan Lemo, Kano State.

    Their vehicle, a Sharon bus with 18 passengers, crashed into a toll gate booth.

    While trying to a avoid a speeding Golf car, the bus, also on to speed, lost control and ran into the toll gate kiosk.

    Eyewitnesses said the vehicle somersaulted and fell  by the roadside.

    Eight passengers died instantly. The others were rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, where three died.

    It was gathered the deceased were buried yesterday morning.

    A survivor, Aliyu Yusuf, said the women were returning from the family home of a newly married man in Wailari, on their way to the bride’s home at Unguwa Uku quarters.

    “We were coming back from the groom’s family house when we suddenly saw a speeding Golf car behind us. The driver was trying to force himself into our lane because there was a huge pothole on his lane through the toll gate.

    “So, to avoid being hit, our driver tried to swerve to the other lane, but unfortunately, there was a trailer coming behind us leaving us with no choice but to return to our original lane. It was in the process the driver lost control and rammed into the toll gate building.

    “I didn’t know how I survived. I just saw myself standing by the roadside with another boy who was also in the vehicle. But when I looked at the car, I noticed that it was completely damaged.

    “When the bus finally stopped, I just saw blood and bodies everywhere; a woman’s hand was severed from her body while her lifeless body had a baby screaming on its back,” Yusuf said.

    The driver of the other vehicle escaped with a broken arm.

    Another witness, pointing at blood stains on one of the cubicles, said: “This blood smeared this wall after the rolling head of one of the victims flew and hit it.”

    He said the driver of the Golf car sped away, adding that a tricycle rider tried to catch up with him.

    It was learnt the couple lost consciousness after receiving the news.

    At the bride’s home, sympathisers wore long faces and condoled with her father.

    A spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) in Kano, Kabiru Daura, confirmed the incident in a text message.

    “Yes, we are aware. A vehicle conveying women believed to be on high speed ran into the toll gate building at Yanlemo on Zaria road. Eight died on the spot while three died in hospital,” Daura said.

  • NGO aids accident victims

    A non-governmental Organisation (NGO) Health Emergency Initiative (HEI), has reaffirmed  its commitment  to assisting accident victims in need of emergency health care in public health institutions in Lagos.

    The initiative, which is part of the group’s “None should die Campaign”, is aimed at stabilising critically injured road accident victims within 48 hours of such an occurence.

    Speaking during a charity walk  it held  with Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), HEI Executive Director, Achunine Paschal, said the organisation has seen unconscious accident victims who were neglected because no one paid for their treatment.

    “To prevent recurrence of such situations, HEI with the support   its partners, is glad to announce that hope is not lost for such patients. HEI will be responsible for the bill to stabilise the accident victims in about 22 public hospitals in Lagos and Oyo states. In all these public hospitals, the management will not ask for card or deposit because we are going to pay within 24 hours after which we would support in reaching the victim’s relatives to take up from there.”

    Paschal said since the initiative kicked off few months ago, many victims have benefited. “One of the beneficiaries was a nine-year-old cerebral palsy, who was brought to the hospital unconscious and she only needed drugs worth about N13,500 for resuscitation. HEI assisted in bring her back to life.

    “Three weeks ago, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officials took one accident victim to the Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, and because HEI has signed an MoU with the hospital. They did not need anybody to say who would pay because the following morning, our team went there to settle the bill to ensure that the person, who would probably have died, was stabilised.

    The group’s Hospital Visitation/Engagement Com-mittee Chairman, Khanayo Okonkwo, however, appealed to corporate organi-sations and well-meaning Nigerians to support them.

    “We also look after some indigent patients at the hospital. One of the recent cases we intervened was a mother who lost her children during birth but still  prevented from going home because of she could not pay the hospital bill,” he added.

    Leader, Corporate Responsibility, Diversity and Inclusion, PwC, Obioma Ubah, said the organisation is supporting HEI because of its service to humanity, urging other corporate organisations and individuals to do so.

    Ubah said as part of its efforts in giving back to the society and sharing love this Yuletide, PwC’s workers and alumni organised the five-kilometre walk for five charity organisations.

    “The charity organisations are Health Emergency Initiative, Optimal Children Home in Magodo, Cerebral Palsy Centre, Down Syndrome Foundation and Destiny Trust Centre. We are very passionate about their service to humanity and we encourage other corporate organisations and individuals to do same.

    ‘’People should not just give to charity organisations for giving sake, but also engage them in interaction to better understand what they are dealing with. We have walked before for charity and supported charity in different ways, but this is the first time we are supporting five charities at a time,” she added.

  • Eight die in Jigawa accident

    Eight persons died in an accident at Jahun roundabout in Jahun Local Government Area at the weekend. An expectant woman was among the victims.

    An over speeding Honda Civic (AA 160 KMC?), approaching from Gujungu Jahun road, tried to avert colliding into the roundabout, but instead hit motorist waiting at a bus stop.

    An eyewitness said victims were mostly women and children, and a male, while the injured were rushed to Jahun General Hospital.

    Another eyewitness said efforts to rescue the expectant woman and her baby were unsuccessful; both died after the woman was operated upon.

    The driver, who was said to be alone in the vehicle, ran away and abandoned the badly car at the scene.

    Driver killed, another injured in Lagos accident

    A bus driver identified as Ifeanyi was on Sunday killed on the Third Mainland Bridge after his vehicle colluded with a Toyota Camry saloon car.

    The accident occurred around 3pm.

    It was gathered that the Camry marked FKJ441CN, which was heading to Obalende, had a break failure, rammed into a stationary vanagon bus LSR531XT and killed Ifeanyi on the spot.

    The car driver was said to have sustained serious injuries and was treated by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

    According to a witness, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) evacuated the body and towed the vehicles off the road for free flow of traffic.

    Meanwhile, another young man escaped death by whiskers at Tollgate in Alausa after a container fell on his car.

    It was gathered that the truck was being chased by officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission  (FRSC), who fled as soon at the accident occurred.

    A motorist, who witnessed the incident, said the container flattened the vehicle.

    He said: “It is just God. The accident occurred less than a minute after the young man dropped off three passengers he had in the car. FRSC officials were chasing the truck. It seems they stopped the truck driver and he refused to obey.

    “They now pursued and tried to block him. He swerved to avoid them and that was how the load tripped and the 20ft container fell on the car.

    “As usual, the FRSC people sped off immediately. Those FRSC people at Ojota need to be investigated. Their activities are criminal. They engage in indiscriminate arrest of vehicles and extortion. They are bad eggs.”

    Confirming the incidents, the General Manager LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu said the body was handed over to the State Environmental Health Management Unit (SEHMU).

    He appealed to motorists to apply caution as they drive during this season, noting that the agency had attended to more than five accident cases on Sunday alone.

    Three persons were confirmed dead in an accident involving a Honda Civic car and a white Nissan Cabstar at Olorunsogo village on Abeokuta/Sagamu Expressway.

    The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the incident yesterday to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said it occurred on Saturday night.

    Akinbiyi said the Nissan Cabstar, registered as (Lagos) KSF 906 XR, was speeding and lost control.

    The TRACE spokesman said the Cabstar skidded off its lane, which led to a head-on with the Honda car, registered as (Ogun) GBE 495 AA.

    He said: “The Cabstar was on top speed, lost control and crossed to the opposite lane and hit the oncoming vehicle.

    “The accident involved eight people: six males, two females. Three males died in the accident while two people sustained various degrees of injury.”

    The TRACE spokesman said the bodies of the victims were taken to Federal Medical Centre (FMC) mortuary in Abeokuta, the capital, and the injured admitted at the same hospital.

    Yinka Ayefele to mark 20th anniversary of car accident

    Popular gospel singer, Yinka Ayefele is set to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the ghastly auto accident that confined him to a wheel chair and changed his life forever.

    According to the musician, in appreciation of God’s mercy, he has concluded plans to mark two decades of the accident with a week-long series of activities in Oyo and Ekiti states between December 12 and December 17.

    Ayefele said he believes the incident, though a sad one, was what transformed his life and he has to reach out to people in order to appreciate God’s magnanimity in his life over the last two decades.

    Hence, on Tuesday, December 12, Ayefele and his friends will be in his hometown of Ipoti, Ekiti State, to commission a multi-million naira hall he will be donating to his alma mater, Ipoti High School. Also on that day, the musician, through his Yinka Ayefele Foundation, will be putting smile on the faces of 100 women of Ipoti stock by empowering them with various cash gift.

    Ayefele and his team will also visit various orphanages, old people’s homes and hospitals, particularly, the University College Hospital, UCH in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, where he will present buses, cash gift and food items to the less privileged in the homes and patients in the hospital.

    And the climax of the remembrance will be on Sunday December 17 with a thanksgiving service, launching of the 20th year remembrance album and public presentation of his first book titled ‘You and Your Spine’.

    The event will hold at the Music House, Challenge, Ibadan.

    On December 12, 1997, Ayefele was involved in a ghastly motor accident along Ibadan/Abeokuta Road. The tragic event in which he lost the use of legs has been the motivation for many of his songs.

    Ayefele is a recipient of over 200 awards, including the Member of the Order of the Niger, MON, a recognition bestowed on him by former president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.a

    Three die, four injured in early morning accident on Kara bridge 

    Early Thursday morning accident involving multiple vehicles on Kara bridge stretch of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway has left three persons dead and four others injured.

    The accident which occurred around 6:30am involved eleven vehicles, including four trucks, causing not a small obstruction on the highway and huge traffic gridlock.

    Operatives of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and soldiers were sighted working to clear the obstruction, direct traffic and assist victims.

    The Nation gathered that one of the vehicles involved in the accident lost control of the wheel and crashed into another and in the ensuing milieu, others smashed into one another in quick succession.

    The Public Relations Officer of the TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, listed DAF truck marked  APP 769XR, a Mazda bus  with registration number AKD 520 XN, another Mazda bus registered as BDG 327 AA and a nondescript DAF truck as vehicles involved in the early morning accident.

    Others are Cabster marked XS216 KSF, MAN Diesel with registration number AGL 545 XF, Ford marked KTU 320 XN, LEXUS Jeep registered as FKJ475BR, SINO Truck with registration number  KRD 122 XD,  another SINO Truck marked KRD 123 XD and one other.

    Akinbiyi also stated that three persons died while four others were injured in the accident.

     

  • Car accident claims two lives in Ogun

    Two persons died on Sunday in a lone accident involving a Toyota Sequoia in Kobape area along Abeokuta-Sagamu Interchange Expressway.

    Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident.

    Akinbiyi said that the Toyota Sequoia jeep with registration number: KJA 12 AV had a tyre-bust while on top speed which resulted into the accident.

    He stated that two males and two females were in the vehicle when the accident happened in the afternoon , saying that one male and one female died on the spot.

    “The other two victims were seriously injured and were taken to Ijaye General Hospital but were rejected and later taken to Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, ” he said.

    The TRACE spokesman said that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at the general hospital, Ijaye mortuary, while the vehicle had been evacuated by the Owode police station. (NAN)
