  • One dies in Ondo multiple road accidents

    Two separate road accidents reportedly occurred in Akoko area of Ondo state on Wednesday claiming one live.

    The first carnage involved a bus and commercial motorcycle rider (Okada)around 9pm,who sustained head injury.

    Eye witness said the victim was rushed to Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC) Ikare –Akoko.

    The Medical Director,Dr Wale Oguntuase confirmed that a man was brought to hospital with serious head injury which was quickly referred to Federal Medical Centre(FMC) Owo .

    The Unit Commander, FRSC,Ikare Akoko, Jimoh Basiru confirmed that his men carried him to FMC, Owo where he was confirmed dead.

    The second accident involved an oil tanker which detoured while climbing the ‘deadly’ Okerigbo hill.

    It took FRSC officials prompt intervention to supervise the off loading of the product to another trailer,while using a towing vehicle to remove the tanker from the busy highway.

    Basiru warned motorists against night journey,saying it is too risky.

    A spokesman of the community, Alhaji Ibrahim kilani urged Ondo state government to level up Okerigbo hill, Akungba Akoko like that of Oke-Alabojuto,Ikare Akoko where the government was doing a good job to reduce the dreadful hiIl.

    Kilani also hailed the state government for the completion of flooded areas such as Jubilee,Victory College and Bishop’s Court-Ugbe Akoko road that are now motorable.

  • Accident kills 11, injures 16 in Niger

    No fewer than 11 people were feared dead in an auto crash involving a bus, Toyota Corolla and a Hilux van on Ibeto/Kontagora Road in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger on Tuesday.

    Malam Abdullahi Ibrahim, Federal Road Safety Corps Unit Commander in Charge of Kontagora, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kontagora on Tuesday.

    Ibrahim said that 27 people were involved in the accident, 11 died on the spot while 16 others sustained various degrees of injuries.

    He said that the bus was heading toward Kebbi, while the Toyota Corolla and Hilux were going to Kontagora.

    He added that the accident was caused by wrong overtaking and speeding.

    He said that bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue in Kontagora General Hospital, while the injured were receiving treatment in the same hospital.

    The unit commander cautioned motorists against reckless driving, especially during the sallah celebration.(NAN)

  • Four die, nine injured in Anambra multiple crashes

    Four persons died on Monday, while nine sustained varying degrees of injuries in two separate motor accidents at various locations in Anambra State.

    Three passengers were said to have died in one of the crashes which occurred along Enugu-Onitsha expressway involving a Toyota pick-up van with registration number NSR 428 AU.

    The Nation learnt that the driver of the van carrying eight passengers, was coming from Aguleri to popular Upper Iweka when he suddenly lost control and summersaulted.

    The victims were said to have been rushed to the hospital where they were confirmed dead, including the driver, while the other five were critically injured and were receiving treatment.

    Similarly, a woman was confirmed dead in another multiple accident along Nibo road by governor’s lodge, involving one Mercedes tipper with registration number FGG- 405-XV.

    An eye witness who attributed the cause of the accident to brake failure, said the articulated lorry collided with three tricycles and one Toyota Camry car with registration number KPP 262 AA.

    He said the casualties were rushed to the hospital where the woman was confirmed dead, while four other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

    Confirming both accidents, the Police Spokesperson in the state, Mohammed Haruna, said the corpses had since been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

    He added that the driver of the truck has been arrested, while the vehicles involved were towed away from the road for proper inspection.

  • Accident kills magistrate, son, relation, driver

    Magistrate Banji Ayeomoni of Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State, his son Dara, another relation and his driver were reported dead in an inferno caused by a petrol tanker spillage in Ekpoma.

    An official of the court, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday the incident happened on Friday night close to Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma.

    The official said that the late Ayeomoni went to visit his children at Ekpoma, adding that while returning his vehicle ran into the petrol spillage of a tanker which caused fire and other vehicles behind were also affected.

    The source added that the Magistrate, Dara, who is a 500 level student of Medicine of Ambrose Alli University, Akpoma, a young boy of the deceased wife’s sister and the driver died at an undisclosed hospital shortly after the accident.

    “We heard that the late Magistrate went to visit his children at AAU when the incident occurred through a petrol tanker oil spillage, which claimed their lives.

    “It was indeed very sad news to all members of staff and lawyers in our court,’’ the source said. The court prosecutor, Inspector Zedekiah Orogbemi, who also confirmed the incident, said that he was shocked when he got the news.

    The 59 year-old Magistrate, who was due for retirement next year, left behind his wife and two other children.

  • Accident claims two, injures four in Ogun

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sango-Ota unit in Ogun State yesterday said two persons died while four others sustained various degrees of injuries in a multiple accident at Sango-Ota toll-gate.

    The unit commander, Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, who confirmed the accident in an interview with News Agency (NAN) in Ota, said the accident happened at about 4.45 am.

    Oguntoyinbo stated a Mack Truck vehicle with registration number GGE 80 XJ travelling from Abeokuta to Lagos had brake failure due to speeding and rammed into five other vehicles.

    He listed other vehicles involved in the accident to include Volkswagen bus (KTU 899 XR), Volkswagon LT, (GGE 44 XL), Coaster Civilian (LSR 604 XD), Iveco Trailer (XB 190 MLF) and Mazda bus (KJA 667 XP).

    He said 15 people were involved in the accident that resulted in the death of two persons, while four others sustained various degrees of injuries.

    The unit commander explained one of the two deceased was trying to enter a bus while the other was trying to cross the road when they were hit by the vehicles.

     

    ”The corpse of the victims had been deposited at the morgue of General Hospital, Ifo, while the injured are also receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Ota,” Oguntoyinbo said.

    He said the FRSC and other traffic agencies were making efforts to evacuate the vehicles from the road to ease free flow of traffic.

     

  • 10 dead in accident on Kaduna-Kano expressway

    No fewer than 10 passengers died yesterday in an accident on the Kaduna-Kano expressway in Kaduna State.

    Nine of the victims were burnt to death. The accident occurred close to  Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria, at about 5:30 a.m.

    The Commander, Zaria Unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Assistant Corps Commander, Muktar Zubairu, described the accident as “pathetic.”

    Spokesman for the unit, Idris Yahaya, said the accident involved three vehicles – a luxury bus marked GDD 361 YE; a car marked SGR 57 XA; and an articulated vehicle marked LND 246 XE.

    “There were 48 persons in the three vehicles; nine people got burnt to death, while one other woman died in the hospital, 31 persons were injured while seven persons survived the accident,” Yahaya said in a statement.

    The driver of the luxury bus is receiving treatment at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, Zaria.

    The FRSC said that the injured persons were also receiving treatment at the hospital, while the bodies of the dead had been deposited at the same hospital.

    It advised drivers travelling long distances to always stretch their legs by stopping and walking around for a while after four hours of journeying.

  • APC Convention: Councillor, two others die in accident

    A Kano State Contingent to the APC Convention in Abuja has  lost their lives in a ghastly accident  which occurred in Zaria, Kaduna state.
    The victims included a Councillor representing Diso Ward in Gwale local government, Honourable Inuwa Diso and two other party loyalists Malam Abubakar and Alhaji Abdullahi Lawal Idris  who were burnt beyond recognition.
    Their vehicle collided and instantly caught fire.
    Confirming the incident to our reporter,  the Vice Chairman of the local government Honourable Ado Gambo Ja’en‎ described the death of the Councillor  as unfortunate.
    “We are sadden with the death of Inuwa  Diso and his friends.  We pray for the repose of the deceased.  May Allah forgive  all his sins and grant him Aljannatil Firdaus.”
    The corpses of the deceased were brought to the Palace of the Emir of Kano where the Chief Imam of Kano led  Muslim faithfuls   in prayer before they were buried according to Islamic rites.
    In another development the Kano State branch of Nigerian Interventions Movement, this weekend held a maiden meeting with seven political parties in the State capital.
    Addressing the parties, the State Coordinator of the Movement, Comrade AbdulMajeed Sa’ad, explained that, the focus was to install better government or form strong opposition to ensure that new government work assiduously to maximize dividends of democracy for Nigerians.
    According to Comrade AbdulMajeed, names of the seven parties will be withheld till next Wednesday when an MOU and Plan of action would be signed, as well as give the platform neutral name on which to operate effectively.
  • Two feared dead, others injured in Ojuelegba accident

    Two people are feared dead  following the accident that occurred on Tuesday at Ojuelegba, when a truck conveying plywood boards tilted on the Ojuelegba Bridge, Surulere lagos.

    A resident of the area who witnessed the accident said it occurred on Tuesday night around 8pm.

    An eye witness, a resident in the area who spoke with newsmen at the scene said: “A flatbed truck laden with plywood and finished boards tilted on top of Ojuelegba Bridge and fell on three commercial buses and a Toyota Corolla Camry.

    Speaking further, he said: “If the buses were not parked indiscriminately, the accident would not claim lives.

    Confirming the accident, Adesina Tiamiyu, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said “Unfortunately, two people died while two others sustained injury”

    “We have removed the vehicles from the road and we have also taken the trucks off the bridge.”

    “We are now trying to clear the remnants of the plywood at Ojuelegba under-bridge and the top of the bridge.”

    “That vehicle was definitely overloaded and that was what I think caused the accident,” Tiamiyu said.”

    He, however, urged commercial drivers to park at designated bus-stops and to stop parking indiscriminately.

    The residents also urged the Lagos State Government to guide against further disasters in the area by taking quick measures to curb the jeopardy.

  • 4 police cadets, 2 others die in auto crash

    At least six people including four police cadets have been killed in a ghastly motor accident on Kano-Kaduna Expressway on Sunday.

    Confirming the incident in Zaria, Kaduna State, the Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zaria, Mr Muktar Zubairu described the incident as unfortunate and pathetic.

    He said the accident involving two vehicles; a J5 bus with registration number: KMC 274 YW and Golf which was burnt to ashes occurred around Kwanar Likoro close to Tashar Yari.

    According to him, the two vehicles had a head-on-collision and subsequently burst into flames due to presence of a generating machine inside one of the vehicles.

    He attributed the cause of the accident to ongoing road rehabilitation on Zaria-Kano road that forced motorists to use one lane, thereby leading to series of accidents.

    Zubairu cautioned motorists against overspending and reckless driving to save the lives of Nigerians, assuring that live has no replica, hence the need to holistically safeguard it.

    The unit commander identified causes of accidents on Nigerian roads to overspending, dangerous overtaking, overloading, use of tokumbo tyres, reckless driving, phone calls and disregard for traffic rules and regulations among others.

    In his comment, a representative of AIG, DSP Rufa’i Suleiman said that all the late policemen were in their 400 level from Police Academy Wudil.

    He said the deceased cadets, three males and a female were on their way to Zaria, Kaduna State from Wudil in Kano State for a break.

    The AIG pleaded with the parents of the deceased to take heart and accept the will of Allah (SWT) in good faith.

    NAN reports that funeral prayer for the late policemen was conducted at Masallacin Danja at Tudun Wada, Zaria and buried at Dambo cemetery.

  • 12 killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash

    A dozen of passengers – six males and six females- have died in a road accident, which also left five other persons injured yesterday on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

    It was gathered the accident occurred in the afternoon when a commercial bus collided with a truck at the Ogunmakin (Ogun State) stretch of the expressway near the Foursquare Camp.

    It involved a truck marked LSD 138 XQ and a bus with registration number AAA 886 XR.

    The accident created a massive traffic gridlock for travellers on the highway with operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) sighted frantically clearing obstructions, evacuating victims and re -directing traffic.

    The Public Relations Officer of TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, said 17 people were involved.

    Akinbiyi attributed the cause to “wrongful overtaking on the part of the bus which collided with an oncoming truck.”

    He confirmed 12 people died on the spot with five persons were also injured.

    He noted that the injured were taken to the IFE-OLUWA PLUS Hospital Ogunmakin while the dead victims were taken to the FOS Mortuary Ipara, Ogun State.
