  • Tonye Cole, Accord Party assembly candidates call for fresh election in Rivers

RIVERS State All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain,  Tonye Cole and Accord Party assembly candidates have called for fresh a governorship and legislative election in the state.

They alleged that many controversies have trailed the March 9 exercise, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  to organise a fresh poll. Affirming the lack of confidence in the system by the two major parties involved in the contest, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Action Congress (AAC), Cole said any result emerging from the March 9 poll will not be acceptable to the losing party.

He (Cole)  was however silent on what will be his involvement in a fresh election in his statement titled: “A plea for righteous intervention in Rivers State.” Noting the mutual suspicion between the two parties and the acrimony triggered by the contest, Cole pleaded for a fresh start under heavy security to guarantee the will of the people.

He said: “If there is one thing that I am certain of, it is that the entire election of March 9 is totally and completely compromised from head to toe. There are no results that would be announced today that would reflect the will of the people in any form or manner.

“There are just as many people who do not trust and will not accept an election that delivers PDP today because of the belief that the umpire has granted unfettered access to the result sheets and a yeoman’s job has been done on the collated results that is guaranteed to withstand any scrutiny through the Election Tribunals or any court of law thereafter just as there are as many people who will not accept a result that delivers the AAC because of the belief that the election day results were structured to favour them by the direct involvement of the military as insinuated by the PDP. “INEC must, therefore, declare the entire elections of March 9 null and void and set out a new date for fresh elections.

“This time around, there are no distractions left and every eye is upon Rivers State now.” Speaking yesterday in Port –Harcourt, the Accord Party assembly candidates said the call for fresh election followed the confirmation that the March 9, exercise was characterized by violence which affected the holding of the polls. In a communiqué presented by the group’s spokesman, Duke Alamboye, the candidates called on INEC to set up a new date for fresh governorship and house of assembly elections in the state, within the stipulated time as approved by the Electoral Law.

Alamboye who contested to represent  Akuku-Toru State Constituency II also called for the redeployment of Obo Effanga, the Resident Electoral Commissioner “and other critical staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC who participated and were involved in the March 9 election in Rivers State, especially given the fact that they have been victims of the intimidations, harassments, abductions and hostage situations they were exposed to during the elec tion.” “We also state clearly, that we have completely disregarded any earlier declared results in connection with the March 9, polls in Rivers State, as these figures are products contrived from very faulty processes, which have rendered them inchoate and unreliable.”

  • Imo guber candidates score INEC high

Governorship candidates of the various political parties in Imo State have expressed satisfaction with the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies over the conduct of the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The candidates unanimously affirmed that there was significant improvement in the conduct of the election compared to the Presidential and National Assembly election, especially in the early arrival of voting materials and orderliness at the polling units.

The candidates including Uche Nwosu (Action Alliance), Ikedi Ohakim (Accord Party), Ifeanyi Araraume All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), among others also lauded the turnout of voters, which they said underscores the commitment of the people to electing their leaders.

Nwosu who cast his vote, alongside his wife at his Eziama Obire Polling Unit 004, at exactly 9.48am, expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the election.

He also commented security agencies for the prevailing peace across the state.

Nwosu said; I am satisfied with the voting process. You can see I voted with my wife. So far the Card Readers are working well. I will win; Action Alliance will form the next government in Imo.”

Former governor of the state and the governorship candidate of Accord Party, Ikedi Ohakim, also confirmed that there was obvious improvement in the elections.

He said that the early commencement of voting was a great achievement recorded by INEC, compared to the previous election.

According to him, “there is improvement in today’s election, materials arrived early and there is peace across the state, except for pockets of skirmishes but is not yet uhuru”.

Meanwhile there were reports of shooting and snatching of ballot boxes in some parts of the state.

Security operatives on election duty also arrested five fake Policemen and two soldiers in Ideato South Council Area of the State.

The State Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, who disclosed this to The Nation, also said that some armed hoodlums who invaded a Polling Unit in Oke Uvuru Counci Area were arrested with stolen ballot papers.

  • Accord party adopts APC’s Adelabu in Oyo

The Accord Party in Oyo State has adopted the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adebayo Adelabu, as its candidate.

A statement on Friday in Ibadan by the state Chairman and National Secretary of the party, Chief Muda Ogunsola and Dr Adebukola Ajaja respectively, said the decision to adopt the APC governorship candidate was taken by the state executive and party chairmen in the 33 local government areas of the state.

The statement reads in part  ”The adoption, which was endorsed by the national headquarters of our great party, was as a result of realisation that Accord might not be able to achieve its quest to give Oyo State good governance.

”Hence the need to have a workable alliance with Adebayo Adelabu, the APC candidate in the Saturday election.

It said that Accord party, however, remained a registered political party in Oyo State which needed to form an alliance with a formidable political party.

”We thereby direct our members and supporters across the state to cast their votes for Adelabu during Saturday’s gubernatorial election.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that efforts to get the reaction of Mr Saheed Ajadi, the Accord Party governorship candidate in Oyo State, to the development proved abortive as calls put to his cell phone did not go through.

  • Accord party guber candidate declares support for Wike re-election

The Rivers State Governorship Candidate of Accord Party has declared his support for the re-election of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Sir Precious Baridoo said his support for Governor Wike is because he has performed exceptionally during his first term.

He said: “We have a Governor in Rivers State who has done exceptionally well for our State and our people for the last four years or so.

“A great, peace-loving and democrat per excellence, River State has never had it so good in education, healthcare, road infrastructure, rural development, sports and security under the watch and direction of His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON, GSSRS, POS as Governor.

“Fortunately, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has again offered to serve the people of Rivers State for a second term as Governor under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)”

“As a political realist, I believe in continuity, especially when the performance of an incumbent is widely applauded by the generality of our people.  Furthermore, Governance is a serious business; it is not for pretenders or infantile and jobless political predators.

“Taking all the circumstances into consideration I have come to the conclusion that the interest of our dear Rivers State will best be served with the re-election of His Excellency Ezenwo Nyesom Wike as Governor for the next four years.

“Therefore, it is with all sense of patriotism and responsibility that I, Mr. Precious Baridoo hereby declare my total support for the re-election bid of His Excellency Ezenwo Nyesom Wike CON, GSSRS, POS as the next Governor of Rivers State”

He urged all members of Accord Party across Rivers State to vote for Governor Wike. He also condemned the clampdown on PDP members in the state by security forces.

“I call on members of the Accord Party and all my teeming supporters across the State to vote for His Excellency Ezenwo Neysom Wike and all other candidates of the PDP during the Governorship and House of Assembly elections on Saturday 9th March 2019.

“I join well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the ongoing security clampdown and harassment of political leaders of the PDP in the run-up to the elections and call on the law enforcement agencies to provide adequate security for Rivers people to peacefully vote for the candidates of their choice before, during and after the Governorship and House of Assembly election”, he said.

He further explained that he remains the authentic Governorship Candidate of the Accord Party following the Federal High Court judgment.

“Recall that the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt on the 27th of February 2019 nullified the nomination of Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs as the Rivers State Governorship Candidate for Accord Party and in his place declared me as the duly nominated Governorship candidate of the party having contested and emerged victorious from the party’s primary.

“As at today 7th March 2019, that judgment is still subsisting and effective having not been set aside or stayed by any superior Court of law. Consequently, I remain the authentic and lawful Rivers State Gubernatorial candidate of the Accord Party for next Saturday’s rescheduled Governorship elections”.

  • Accord adopts APC in Oyo

The Accord Party in Oyo State on Tuesday agreed to work for the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s governorship and assembly polls.

This alliance, according to the hierarchy of the party, was facilitated by Senator Soji Akanbi representing Oyo South senatorial district.

He reunited with the APC from the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) after a high powered meeting with the Vice President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC stalwarts after the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Over 350 members, party leaders and representatives of the Accord Party from all 33 local government areas of Oyo State converged on the Mauve 23 Event Centre in Ring Road, Ibadan to finalise terms of support for the ruling party.

Akanbi told the Accord members that his return to help the APC’s recovery process was hinged on recent reconciliation efforts of the APC national leaders.

He lauded the virtues of President Muhammadu Buhari and emphasized the need to ensure Oyo state aligns with the ruling party to further bring development to the state.

“We are here to cement a relationship that will bring massive development to the state because the ruling party leadership has a mandate to win in Oyo State.

“We recognize that we only can win together and that is why we are calling on fellow progressive minded people to join the winning side.

“I enjoin you all to align with the APC to win the gubernatorial elections in the state and ensure progressive change in the interest of the masses,” he stated.

The chairman of the Accord in Oyo State, Engr. Muda Ogunsola, lauded the senator for placing the masses’ interest first.

He explained his party’s decision to support the APC in Saturday’s governorship election has been well accepted by all stakeholders in the party.

He informed the national hierarchy of the party had granted the go ahead for the state chapter to assist the APC to realize its mandate in the governorship elections.

This marks a major sign of recovery for the party that suffered a shock defeat in the hands of the main opposition party, PDP in the Presidential election held on Feb 23.

The APC in the state also surrendered the Oyo South senatorial seat and all four federal constituencies in the district to the PDP.

APC’s poor showing in Ibadan metropolis, which affected their overall performance, is largely blamed on the internal crisis that forced Senator Akanbi to seek re-election on the platform of the ADC after Governor Abiola Ajimobi claimed the party’s ticket from the incumbent.

  • ‘Lulu-Briggs remains Accord Party’s governorship candidate in Rivers’

…jittery Wike is behind court case

The Director of Communication of Dumo Lulu-Briggs Campaign Organisation of the Accord Party in Rivers State, Sotonye Ijuye-Dagogo, has stated that the oil magnate (Lulu-Briggs) remains the governorship candidate of the party in Rivers, despite judgment from Federal High Court, Port Harcourt.

He also insisted that “jittery” Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was behind the court case, after causing confusion in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his (Wike’s) desperation to prevent a strong governorship contender on March 9.

Ijuye-Dagogo, in his reaction last night, stated that Lulu-Briggs campaign organisation was not worried about the judgment, while accusing the presiding judge, Justice E.A. Obile, of bias.

He said: “The matter before the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt was not about the Rivers State Accord Party’s eligibility to be on the ballot for the 2019 governorship election, but about who is the legitimate governorship candidate. The Rivers State Accord Party, therefore, remains on the ballot.

“The judgment delivered by Justice E.A. Obile of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt did not come to us as a surprise, because the learned trial judge did not hide his bias throughout the duration of the hearing, which led to the early request for his lordship to recuse himself and the subsequent withdrawal of Wilcox Abereton SAN, counsel to Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, when his lordship decided to continue with the case.

“A petition has since been written to the National Judicial Council against the trial judge on the matter. The entire judgment has no legal standing, because the defendants in the case were not given the opportunity for fair hearing and were not given the opportunity to replace their counsel, who withdrew from the case.

“The Dumo Lulu-Briggs campaign organisation is aware of the shenanigan and evil machinations of Rivers governorship candidate of PDP (Wike) to use the courts, which has been severally described as ‘Wike’s Supermarket,’ to knock out strong contenders in the governorship race.

“Wike’s connection in this dubious act is buttressed by the fact that Mr. Precious Baridoo’s counsel, Wori N. Wori Esq, is from the law firm of Emmanuel Aguma, SAN, the deceased immediate past Attorney-General to Wike. Furthermore, Mr. Precious Baridoo got ‘elected’ as Rivers IPAC Chairman months after his purported nomination as Accord Party’s governorship candidate, a position known to be occupied only by the cronies of the governor.”

The director of communication also reiterated that during the PDP’s presidential rally at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, Baridoo did not only declare support for the defeated PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, he led 56 “so-called” governorship candidates to step down for Wike and they also endorsed him for a second term.

He revealed: “The said Precious Baridoo, who has since been disowned by the Accord Party’s National Working Committee, was appointed into the Caretaker Committee of Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State by the Wike-led PDP government.

“Our faith in the Nigerian judiciary cannot be diminished by the obvious miscarriages of a few. We are focused and ready to not just vacate the scandalous judgement, but obtaining the mandate which Rivers people are eager to offer Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs.

“Our legal team has filed an appeal and a stay of execution and so Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs remains the governorship candidate of Accord Party in Rivers State.

“The aim of the sponsors of the judicial miscalculation to stop Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs and deny the Rivers electorate the much-needed quality governance that the Accord Party represents, shall be disgraced at the end.”

Ijuye-Dagogo also called on the teeming supporters of Accord party and other good people of Rivers state to remain resolute and focused, while going about their lawful businesses, assuring that light would always triumph over darkness.

  • Oyo 2019: Accord Party vows to defeat APC

The Accord Party in Oyo state has boasted that the party will defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other opposition elements in the coming 2019 general elections.

The state secretary of the party, Mr. Sunday Igbinsola who made this known yesterday while speaking with newsmen at the party’s campaign flag-off in Ibadan.

He decried the high level of poverty in the state, saying Accord party was ready to tackle poverty in Oyo state if elected.

“Accord has the most credible candidates in the forthcoming elections. People that have no blemish; we parade people with no criminal records. From governorship candidate, to senators, federal representatives to state assembly candidates, they are all people with unquestionable character. Our party’s gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Saheed Ajadi is a complete gentleman, a professional who has used his wealth of experience to assist in developing some states in the south west, including states under APC.

“We have a solid platform to capitalize on, coupled with the consistency of our leaders, for instance most of our leaders, elders that started this party with Senator Rashidi Ladoja in 2011 are still with us and are solidly behind all our candidates.  In fact, majority of our part candidates joined the party in 2011, including our governorship candidate. We thank God he won the ticket to be our party flag bearer in the coming elections, very reliable and intelligent, among all his contemporaries, he stands tall.

“We still have with us Pa Solomon Adeniran, party leader in Akinyele Local Government, Pa (Rt. Major) Bola Bolarinwa, party leader in Ona-Ara, who is also the chairman of chairmen, Pa Abraham Adeniran, party leader in Ibadan Southeast, Alhaja Kafaya Adenuga, former Party women leader under Late Chief Lamidi Adedibu, now Accord women leader, Ibadan Southeast, Pa Jacob Omoniyi, party chairman, Ibadan North. Honestly, the structure remains unshaken”, he said.

Igbinsola further chastised the present administration in the state, led by Senator Ajimobi, by accused the governor of destroying good works left by the past governors.

According to him, the standard of governance in Oyo state is very low, poor and of no direction.

While calling for a change in government, he argued that what the people really need was real change.

The party’s state chairman, Hon. Muda Ogunsola in his remarks promised that Accord would declare state of emergency in education after the emergence of its gubernatorial candidate, as the governor of the state in May 2019.

Ogunsola in his address assured people that Accord party will do overall restructuring of the state to correct all wrongs of the Ajimobi’s administration.

“By the special grace of God, we must do the restructuring of the state. We must do total restructuring of Oyo state not only Nigeria. We must do the restructuring, because our enviable pacesetter state then is coming the least on the table of development now and everything must be restructured.

“We are going to declare state of emergency on education. Today, you will notice that the level of our education in Oyo state has gone down beyond reasonable level. Our hospitals are in comatose today. Unemployment is rising by the day. All these shall be tackled when we take over next year, “he said.

Ogunsola also vowed that the party will defeat the APC gubernatorial candidate and all candidates put forward by the party in the forthcoming general elections.

He said, “God will disgrace those sharing money to get votes in the 2019 election. We shall allow youths and women to lead government. That is why we presented young people as our candidates. Our party is a discipline party and that is why we don’t have any crisis, no godfathers and no court case in the party.”

Gubernatorial candidate of the party while speaking said he will change the future of the state and lift the state to enviable status.

“I am running for the office to serve the people of the state. I am not for embezzlement, I’m here to serve. We will improve hospital funding, engage the youth. We shall convert waste to wealth as soon as we come on board,” Ajadi stated.

A former member of House of Representatives, who is also contesting to return to National Assembly, Hon. Adebukola Ajaja in her speech warned against vote buying, saying the party was prepared to take the mantle of leadership in 2019.

“Stop buying peoples conscience through vote buying, allow people to vote for candidate of their choice. Women should come out to vote, women should be involved in politics. Politics cannot change or stain your good behaviour, rather it will give you opportunity to serve your people.” she warned.
