    Oshiomhole presents 2015 budget Tuesday

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, will on Tuesday present the budget proposal for 2015 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly.

The budget presentation would be the first to take place at the old assembly chamber since the beginning of the present democratic dispensation.

Edo lawmakers and the assembly workers had abandoned the complex located at Oba Ovoranmwen Square, due to what Speaker Uyi Igbe termed ongoing renovation.

However, nine Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers have continued to sit at the assembly complex.

Oshiomhole informed the lawmakers about the budget presentation in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere.

The governor also sent the name of Dennis Idahosa from Ovia South West local government area as a commissioner nominee to the House for confirmation.

2015: Oshiomhole to vie for APC presidential ticket

•Number of aspirants increase as Buhari, Atiku, Okorocha, Kwankwaso, Saraki battle for slot

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State is warming up to join the 2015 presidential race.

He is expected to slug it out with  former  Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Senator Bukola  Saraki, Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), and Governor  Rochas Okorocha  (Imo) as well as former military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari for the  ticket of the  All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gen. Buhari and Senator Bukola Saraki, are yet to officially declare their interest in the contest.

More members of the party may show interest in due course, according to party sources.

Governor Oshiomhole, it was gathered, has already completed consultations at home and abroad on his aspiration.

He was in the United Kingdom and the United States of America (USA) recently as part of the consultations.

He is said to have received encouragement to join the race from friends, including foreigners who have followed his switch from labour to politics and governance.

His backers are convinced that Oshiomhole stands a good chance of making it to Aso Rock Villa since the PDP has conceded its own ticket slot to President Goodluck Jonathan from the Southsouth.

They are of the view that the choice of Oshiomhole might serve as a counter-balancing force to Jonathan in the zone should the  APC concede the slot to the Southsouth.

But there is a snag: the recent election of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun from the same zone as the party’s National Chairman.

A source familiar with the development said Oshiomhole has been “looking at the larger picture and not geopolitical calculation.”

“The comrade governor, is considering the need for a leader to salvage the nation rather than any other calculation,” the source said.

“This is why he has been meeting with leaders at home and abroad on his aspiration and how to rescue the nation. He has concluded consultations and he is of the strong opinion that he should vie for the office.

“The governor is interested in the presidential race. He will make his intention known soon. As a former labour leader, he believes he has a bigger constituency to lead the APC to victory in 2015 if he gets the ticket.

“The governor will make a declaration as soon as the APC releases the guidelines in line with INEC’s timetable.”

The governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Prince Kassim Afegbua, confirmed the interest of his boss in the Presidency.

He said: “This has always been our interest because some of us would not want the Comrade Governor to squander his enormous political capital across the country without giving a shot at the highest office in the land. He has tremendous courage, brilliance and capacity to contend with developmental issues in the country; ingredients that are presently needed to provide problem-solving leadership at the center.

“Give it to this great former Labour leader that he is one Nigerian who believes so much in the unity of the country and is ready to go to any length to preserve that unity.

“Nigerians need a leader like Comrade Oshiomhole at this time to galvanize all the centrifugal and centripetal forces into a national aspiration to lift the country from its present prostrate state to some kind of Olympian height in a clear headed attempt to earn our cherished position amongst nations of the world.”

He added, “He will wait for the party to blow the whistle but he will test his presidential participation through the primaries. It will be our hope that the members of the APC consider him worthy of this noble cause in the build-up to the 2015 elections. To answer your question, yes, he will contest.”

A petrol station belonging to a major marketer in Benin City, Edo State, has been sealed off by the Petroleum Monitoring Committee for allegedly selling adulterated fuel.

The station dealer and fuel attendants were arrested.

Some motorists, including an aide of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Tony Kakaka, were said to have complained about the fuel sold at the station after their vehicles became faulty after refuelling.

At the petrol station, an inscription, “Bad fuel”, was written on the wall.

Chairman of the Monitoring Committee Soni Idahagbon said investigations were still on.

He said officials are testing the remaining products.

I didn’t charter plane to Miami, says Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has denied allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that he spent N18million to charter a jet to Miami, United States of America.

Oshiomhole said the PDP state Chairman, Dan Orbih, had a penchant for making what he termed “ludicrous claims”.

Orbih at the weekend alleged that the government spent over N400million to attend the Edo Convention in USA.

But the governor, who spoke through the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Louis Odion, said he travelled on a commercial airline to honour Edo Community in the US.

Odion said:”Anyone who bothers to double-check would find that Governor Oshiomhole is perhaps one of the few governors today who travel with the smallest entourage, if not totally alone, to save cost.

“By his latest claim, we are left wondering what Orbih’s motive is. Whatever it is, one thing is clear. Orbih, a poor student of history, is obviously against building and cementing the bond of unity in Edo State.”

“Otherwise, Orbih, sworn apostle of divide-and-rule politics, would not have dared this time to profane something as sacred as the coming together of all Edo people in United States when indeed proud and true Edo sons like Comrade Oshiomhole are toiling tirelessly to unite the people.”

    Reps hail Oshiomhole on development

Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Education have praised Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole for judiciously utilising funds to develop the state.

The lawmakers described as “unquantifiable” Oshiomhole’s contributions to the development of modern Nigeria.

They said the governor was one of the persons they  respect because he believes in the oneness of the country.

The lawmakers spoke in Benin City when they visited Oshiomhole.

The Committee Chairman, Aminu Suleiman, said:”We are here and many of us are satisfied with what we saw. Those of us who are familiar with Edo State continue to wonder where you manufactured the funds to do what you are doing in the state.

“Your fight against poverty and your drive for human capital development is actually second to none in the face of zero resources, because Edo State is only an oil producing state in name only.

“Yet, you have utilised the little you are receiving judiciously well to further earn our respect.

“I want to say on behalf of the committee that you have a huge followership in the House of Representatives who believe in your style irrespective of the political leaning.

“I think at the appropriate time when the need arises, we will make use of that political capital. The House of Representatives is one classical example of a house that does and act in national interest, irrespective of the party.”

Oshiomhole educates market women on Ebola

    •Governor advises traders on PVCs

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole met with market women yesterday on precautionary measures to avoid the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

The governor addressed the women in Benin, the state capital, on the reality of the deadly virus and what they need to do to avoid contracting the disease.

He said: “The meeting today is in two parts. First, it is to tell you about the Ebola Virus Disease, which was brought from another country to Lagos. We thank God that the disease has not come to Edo State.

“The disease is difficult to manage. So, I am advising you as leaders of market women to talk to your members to be wary of whom they shake or embrace. This is because the disease causes serious sickness that can lead to death at short notice.

“So, because of this, it is good that we should know what to do as people travel to different parts of the country. People walk about and we do not know those who are infected. That is why we must be prepared and plan so that if anybody sees any victim, he or she should know what to do.”

The governor said the second part of his sensitisation meeting was to let the market women know the essence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) permanent voters’ cards (PVCs).

He said: “The INEC voter registration and collection of the PVCs will soon begin in Edo State. So, I am advising all of you to set outside whatever you may be doing and go to your centres as may be designated by INEC officials and make sure you collect your cards. It is your power as the 2015 general elections draw closer.

“As busy women, some of you may want to procrastinate your collection to a later date. It is risky, because the exercise, according to INEC, will last three days. So, we want to ensure that within those three days, every market woman goes to the designated centres to collect her permanent voter’s card. You cannot vote without it. If you don’t have the temporary voter’s card, you will not be allowed to vote.”

He advised the market women leaders to educate their members on the need to swear to an affidavit to enable them get the PVCs, in case their temporal voter’s cards shad been misplaced.

Health Commissioner Dr. Aihanuwa Eregie told the market women’s leaders that the Ebola Virus Disease had been in existence since 1976.

She said: “The virus can be found in animals, like monkey, bat, chimpanzee, among others. Hunters who go to the bush to hunt for animals can contract the virus.”

The commissioner explained that though the virus was not in Edo State, there was need to alter the residents, especially the market women who travel to various parts of the state.

She listed some of the symptoms of the Ebola disease as headache, weakness of the body, waist pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, internal and external bleeding, especially bleeding from the gum.

Eregie urged the people to regularly wash their hands and ensure general cleanliness of their environment.

A representative of the market women from Edo South, Mrs. Blacky Omoregie, hailed Oshiomhole for educating the traders on the deadly disease.

She said: “We thank you our comrade governor on this very important meeting. I want to assure you that our market women will be enlightened on the need to observe precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the state and the need to collect their permanent voters cards when the time comes.”

  • ‘The Adams Oshiomhole you don’t know’

‘The Adams Oshiomhole you don’t know’

Many Nigerians know the governor of Edo State first as a unionist, in a surprise move his daughter Winnie decided to fete and talk about him. Ebomhiana Musa writes

FOR most locals in his native Iyamoh village, a Saturday offers an opportunity to take a break from their agrarian occupation and enjoy the thrills weekend brings. But for the visiting Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, all days are the same; insofar there is still work to be done to “take Edo to the next level”.

So, penultimate Saturday (August 16), the visiting homeboy was in his usual elements.  Even though he was supposed to be “home for the weekend”, the Edo State Governor chose instead to go out and inspect a number of ongoing projects in the Edo North axis.  After sweating it out all day on the field; the “People’s Governor” later returned home for a shower and a deserved rest.

But if he ever thought sunset would, as usual, be spent quietly in the midst of close family members and associates in the garden amid folksy jokes, how mistaken he was. For no sooner had the otherwise sharp-witted Edo governor stepped into the patio in the garden in a stripped T-Shirt and trousers than he came to appreciate the length of the web of “conspiracy” cleverly woven around him in the past few days, masterminded by no other than his visiting first daughter (Winnie), aided and abetted by his CSO (Chief Security Officer), Yussuf Haruna and Chief Tony Ezekiel.

Waiting out there to receive the man popularly called “Oshio Baba” tonight was not the regular members of the “inner circle”, but a motley crowd of members of the extended family, childhood friends, political associates and a few others the “conspiratorial gang” thought mean a lot to the governor.

    The ambush

Obviously taken aback by the sheer size of the gathering, the Comrade Governor exclaimed, “Oh my God!” his mouth wide open in bewilderment. Without addressing anyone in particular, he continued: “You guys have really made a big fool of me. Can someone tell me what’s going on and who is behind all this?”

Instinctively, the crowd burst into a good-natured laughter at the Comrade Governor’s expense.

Lo and behold, forward stepped petite-framed Winnie: “Daddy, I’m glad we got you flat-footed for once. It is meant to be a surprise party in your honour for being a great dad. My siblings and I agreed on this. I’m sure if I had consulted you beforehand you would not have approved of it or at best, you would have found an excuse to escape from Edo State today.”

On hand to assist Winnie in the execution of the “coup” was her younger sister, Jane.

To avoid the secret leaking, Winnie and other conspirators had opted to send the invite to the occasion discreetly. Those invited were tipped off barely 24 hours to the event and told to keep it secret for obvious reason.

The short notice notwithstanding, the roll-call at Iyamoh was very impressive. From serving commissioners in the state to the Chairman of the State Revenue Service, Chief Oseni Elamah, to Nosa Meggison (who represented the “Lagos gang”), to Mr. Mujahideen Dako, the governor’s childhood friend, to Elder Nureen Etameso (a pharmacist), who spoke on behalf of the extended Oshiomhole clan.

Indeed, it turned out a remarkable  evening of sweet speeches and outpouring of emotions spiced with choice wine and the best of African cuisine.

The select guests took turn to eulogise the Comrade for his exemplary sacrifice, giving the children the best in terms of education and instilling in them good values. Today, they are the pride of the family and the society.

In her welcome address, 33-year-old Winnie (Mrs. Owumi) said it all: “Daddy, this is just a token to appreciate all you have done for us your children. Right from our childhood, you taught us to always remember the daughter and son of whom we are. Your total commitment to labour activism over the years meant you were never at home all the time. But the moments you spent with us were always fantastic. You taught us to believe in ourselves, to believe what will last is that which we labour for, not what we inherited.”

And then Winnie’s shocker: “Dad, I recall that despite being your favourite child when I was growing up, you still beat with cane whenever I did  anything naughty. Whatever I am today or whatever modest academic achievement I claim today, I owe it to the solid home training you and our late mom gave us.”

Indeed, the riveting story of “Governor Oshiomhole, the good father” could in a way also be taken as a report on “Winnie, the usual prodigy”. From childhood, Winnie had always showed uncommon brilliance. Even though she came tops in the entrance examination to the Air Force Girls Secondary School, Jos in 1992, she was denied admission because of “quota system”. The four slots allocated to “educationally advantaged” Edo State were ceded to the scions of the high and the mighty in Edo State then. She ended up attending Army Children School in Kaduna. When she finally wrote her WAEC exams six years later, she made distinctions in all subjects as well.

She later gained admission to the University of Ibadan to study medicine. She only spent one academic session there before transferring to Lewis University, United States where she graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. According to the school website, Winnie was a star student who won multiple awards for her prodigious brains. These include Illinois Lincoln Laureate Award, the Father Aquinas Award, the President’s Award for Student Volunteerism, the Scholar’s Academy Athena Award for Excellence in Student Writing and a Biology Department Award.

Recalling her graduation day at Lewis University, the proud dad said: “When Winnie’s name was announced as overall best graduating student, I really felt like a giant even though I have a small frame.”

Her exceptional academic performance earned a place at the prestigious Stanford University, United States where she later bagged a Doctor of Medicine degree in June 2006. Thereafter, she undertook general surgery residency, after which she decided to specialise in Urology with a fellowship/sub-specialisation in Paediatric Urology.

That night, amid the chirping of birds on the trees surrounding the garden and gurgling of a nearby stream, speaker after speaker poured encomiums on Winnie for making the family and indeed Nigeria proud in faraway USA.

The climax was when the Comrade Governor himself took the floor to give a testimony. With thick-drawn breath of emotion, he said his only regret was that his wife and mother of Winnie was not alive to witness an occasion like this. A minute silence was earlier observed in her honour.

He continued: “Winnie has always made me proud right from her childhood. I am proud of her accomplishments in her chosen career. For me, what Winnie has also demonstrated is that you don’t favour or disfavour a child based on sex. As parents, we should all endeavour to give the girl child the same treatment we give the male child.”

He described her as exceptionally forthright and humble: “Even today, she doesn’t go about throwing her weight around as a governor’s daughter unlike what the average lady in her shoes would do.

“In fact, tonight I feel really guilty that Winnie has to throw a party for me when it should have been me throwing a party to celebrate her academic accomplishments.  But like they say, better be late than never. Tonight, I want to assure Winnie and her co-conspirators that I shall retaliate by staging my own party in her honour for the pride she has brought the Oshiomhole family.”

Indeed, it was a celebration of family values.

  • Oshiomhole seeks tough sanctions for vandals

Oshiomhole seeks tough sanctions for vandals

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has urged the Federal Government to impose tough sanctions on pipeline vandals.

Oshiomhole spoke at the Government House while hosting the Joint Task Force on the Protection of Oil & Gas Pipelines, led by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commandant-General Dr. Ade Abolurin.

The governor said: “We are worried about the scale, not only of oil theft, but the seeming ease with which pipelines are vandalised by criminals, leading to huge losses. What they steal is nothing compared to the net loss arising from their activities. Many communities and villages have been ruined, including mine.

“I am told security agents try to preserve vessels seized in the course of tracking these characters, whether at sea, in river side areas or in the creeks, as exhibits for legal purposes. In the course of these, one thing leads to another. It is either the criminals manipulate the system through interventions from some quarters and you are asked to let them go or they succeed in recovering what was taken from them.

“My argument is that rather than put a man in prison for 10 years, I will sink his ship, which is worth millions of dollars, because at the end of the day, the judicial process can be quite difficult in dealing with this kind of criminals, especially when huge sums of money are involved. The exhibit should be destroyed as soon as it is taken, before they start manipulating their way around the system.

“When criminals make so much money from activities like this, they become so rich that they can afford sophisticated weapons, with which they overwhelm the security system.”

“I assure you of my support and have no doubt that your visit to Edo will be of benefit to all of us. I appreciate the NSCDC’s efforts in the protection of government properties. Your men in Edo have been doing a fantastic job and have been active at our State Security Council meetings, making useful suggestions on a variety of issues.

“We are not an oil-producing community, but there is a pipeline that passes through my village. A couple of years back, some criminals came into my village and burst one of the oil pipes. We had a spillage that contaminated a stream, which was the community’s source of water supply.

But for the fact that I sunk a borehole there before I became governor and have sunk more now, the community would have had no water to drink.

“So the effects of vandalism are not limited to economic loss, in terms of what is stolen and what is spilled, but the environmental devastation that arises from oil spillage and illegal refineries.”

Abolurin said the task force was inspecting oil facilities across the country.

  • Let tricycles operate on Benin major roads

Let tricycles operate on Benin major roads

I COMMEND Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State for transforming the state and making it a model in the country.

The governor has demonstrated through his policies that he is actually a man of the people. My advice for him is that he should not be tired of doing what the masses are interested in.

There is one thing I need from the governor. I want him to allow tricycles to operate on major roads in Benin City. As at now, there is a ban on the operation of tricycles (okada) on major roads in the city. To lessen the suffering of commuters, tricycles should be allowed to ply the roads.

Governor Oshiomhole listens to people. This is what people want, and he should listen to them by lifting the ban imposed on the operation of tricycles.

  • Stop playing politics with security, says Oshiomhole

Stop playing politics with security, says Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has urged politicians to resist the temptation of playing politics with security matters.

Speaking at a Security Management Workshop organised by the Department of State Security (DSS) in Benin City, yesterday, the governor said playing politics with sensitive security matters will only encourage the perpetrators to do more.

He said: “Nothing else matters when we are not safe. I also want to advise those of us  who hold political office and have cause to make public statements that we must resist the temptation of politicising security issues.

“All politicians, whether of the ruling or opposition party, must not join in the madness of politicising security issues.

“If we do this, we will be encouraging kidnappers and other evil-minded people.

“We must resist the temptation and trust that the security agencies know what to do.

“Even where we have information, it is better we share it in private with the security agencies so that all of us can be on the same page.”

Oshiomhole added: “Each and everyone of us, being senior officials of government, people look at us that we should be able to educate those we come across on basic security issues.

“These people who are into violent crimes and terrorism do not live in the moon; they live with us. Sometimes they interact with us without us knowing what their intentions are.

“As we all get more security conscious, we know what to watch out for whenever we find ourselves in public places.”

He thanked the DSS for the initiative and  hoped that at the end of the exercise, the participants would have comprehended basic tips on security.

The DSS State Director, Bello Bakori, said the workshop was to sensitise the people to be security conscious.

He said most of the criminals in the society live with the people and security agencies carry out their assignments based on information.
