    •Condoles with Oshiomhole, Iyayi’s family

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, has criticised the Federal Government for its inability to fix the Abuja-Lokoja road, which caused the death of former National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Festus Iyayi.

Omar spoke in Benin, the Edo State capital, during a condolence visit to Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the family of the late academic.

The NLC president described the late Iyayi as a committed activist who added value to the labour movement in the country.

He said: “We believe that certain factors led to the demise of Prof Iyayi. The Federal Government is highly culpable on the issue of the criminal neglect of the Abuja-Lokoja road, whose contract was awarded over 10 years ago. While other roads have been completed, the Lokoja-Abuja road is uncompleted.

“We believe that if not for the criminal neglect, this accident would not have happened. Also, the executive recklessness on the part of the Kogi Government is glaring. This is said to be the third time that the same convoy was involved in accidents.”

The NLC president urged Nigerians to ensure that things are done well to avoid a repeat of such incident.

Omar said the death of Prof Iyayi is not only a loss to his family and the state but also to the labour movement and Nigeria.

He hoped the late Iyayi’s legacies would not be allowed to die with him.

The NLC President recalled that the late writer and activist did his sabbatical at the NLC.

Omar described him as a committed person who added value to the labour movement.

He said the NLC would not forget the late Iyayi’s invaluable role in the last negotiations with the Federal Government.

Oshiomhole said there were several lessons to be learnt from the death of the late Iyayi.

He said: “The fact that he retired as ASUU president many years ago and yet always identified with ASSU was even part of their struggle decades after he ceased to be their president, is a testimony to the level of his conviction.

“The way we generally drive on our roads is not good enough. Convoys are generally bad. It was not once, not even twice have I dismiss drivers in my convoy. It is a challenge. Some people think the best way to show power is to oppress. I think all of us must work to get our drivers and security detail to respect the right of the citizens.

“I hope the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), beyond the symbolism of changing licences every year, should really get back to work and justify the huge resources the government spends on it.”

    Edo widow shuns PDP’s largesse

Mrs. Joy Ifijeh, the widow who was upbraided by Governor Adams Oshiomhole for putting her goods on the road, yesterday shunned the N250,000 gift given by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

She was not present at the launch of an empowerment fund to cater for widows in the state by the state chapter of the PDP.

Mrs. Ifijeh, who apologised to Governor Oshiomhole for putting her goods on the road, was given automatic employment and a cash gift of N2 million by the governor.

The state Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, said they launched the Widows Empowerment Programme because the party had received N1 million since it posted the video clip of the governor’s encounter with the widow on facebook and YouTube.

He described the governor’s job offer and the cash gift as a ‘Greek gift’ that would not wipe the tears of widows in the state.

Orbih presented the N250,000 to Mrs. Pat Erhabor for onward transmission to Mrs. Ifijeh and made a personal donation of N50, 000 towards the widows’ fund.

Strike: Oshiomhole, Labour in crucial meeting

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State last night met leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state to avert a strike scheduled to begin today.

Labour leaders had threatened to close down all sectors, including the private sector, if the government failed to meet their demands.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Louis Odion, who confirmed the meeting, said he hoped that the issues raised by the labour leaders would be resolved.

He said last night: “They are still meeting.”

The state Chairman of the NLC, Mr. Emma Ademokun, in a communiqué last week gave six reasons why they wanted to embark on a strike.

The reasons included implementation of the pending salary relativity structure of 53.37 per cent for the workers, payment of balance of 20 per cent of the consolidated health salary structure for health workers, implementation of the balance 10.5 per

cent Teachers Special Allowance (TSA) as earlier agreed upon with the NLC, the 2011, 2012 and 2013 promotion exercise and the constitution of the state civil service commission.

Oldest man gets community’s highest title

Chief Manson Umweni Odubu, father of Edo State Deputy Governor, has been installed as the Okaevbo of Urhomehe community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area.

The installation rites which climaxed with a grand reception for guests, friends and political associates from far and near was graced by the Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the Deputy Governor Dr. Pius Egberanmwen Odubu.

Until his installation as the Okaevbo of Urhomehe, Chief Odubu was the Odionwere of Urhomehe community.

In line with the tradition of Benin Kingdom, the installation followed his recent endorsement by the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Erediauwa.

It is traditional that the recipient of such title must not only be the oldest man in the community but also must be a freeborn of Urhomehe community.

Comrade Oshiomhole, whose arrival electrified the crowd, noted that God Almighty remains the sole giver of longevity.

He expressed his happiness for the Okaevbo and his eldest son, Dr. Pius Odubu who is the Deputy Governor, whose father becomes the oldest member of the community.

The Ohonosa of Holy Aruosa Cathedral, Harrison Okao said Chief Odubu is a man of good character and reputation; hence his elevation and investiture as the Okaevbo of Urhomehe.

He urged other members of the community to emulate his exemplary lifestyle in order to enjoy God’s grace in all they do.

Some other guests and associates of the Odubus at the installation ceremony described the event as significant and worth celebrating in view of the life expectancy in the country.

The installation ceremony was attended by former Minister of External Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi, former Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Emmanuel Emovon, the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Uyi Igbe, some members of the House of Representatives, All Progressives Congress (APC) Woman Leader, Mrs. Modino Emovon, commissioners, past and serving council chairmen, traditional rulers, palace chiefs as well as other personalities from all walks of life.

Oshiomhole sets up panel to probe council chair, others

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has inaugurated a panel of enquiry to probe the suspended chairman, vice- chairman, secretary and councillors of Orhionmwon Local Government, who allegedly travelled to Italy without permission.

Inaugurating the panel in Benin City yesterday, the governor said government’s action was in line with the Local Government Act.

He said: “We are founded as a government on the principle of social democracy, accountability, transparency and respect for the electorate. We depend on votes, we don’t depend on rigging and we know that for us to attract votes, government must function and it functions better when at various levels of government, the three ties of government complement each other.

“With the state and local governments working together, we will render services to our people. However, it is now a matter of public secret that the chairman, vice- chairman, secretary and councillors of Orhionmwan Local Government left the country allegedly to Italy at the same time without anybody’s permission.

“I only got to know of it when I was watching news on the TV and I saw people protesting that the entire government was out of the country. I was concerned, I made some preliminary checks and found that there was some truth in it.”

Oshiomhole added: “In line with the Local Government Act, when a local government official has misbehaved, we are obliged in law to set up an inquiry to give those accused of wrongdoing the opportunity to explain.

“In accordance with the law, the House of Assembly has approved the suspension, while this inquiry is on, initially for two months. I believe the issues are not so complicated that they cannot be established within the time frame of the panel, that is within a month or a month and a half.

“I have no doubt that between you, you have what it takes to help us establish the facts without fear or favour. We are having an open mind. Under the law, everyone is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.”

The chairman of the panel, Osagie Obayuwana, a lawyer, thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them.

He said: “We will give our best in a record time.”

Oshiomhole inaugurates team to reposition Bendel Insurance

From , OSemwengie Ben Ogbemudia , Benin

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has inaugurated the Interim Management Committee of the Bendel Insurance Football Club with a charge to reposition the club to restore its lost glory.

Speaking at the inauguration in Benin City, yesterday, Oshiomhole said: “I think that even my worst critic will agree that we have made some progress in the area of infrastructure particularly in education, roads, job creation, rural and urban electrification, provision of water even in the most difficult terrain. We made some investments in sports, the new look Ogbemudia Stadium, and several other things we have done.

“But the area in which I cannot claim to have done so much or that we have achieved anything significant is in the area of repositioning Bendel Insurance. Not because I do not appreciate the team or because I do not love football. I am fanatical about football, yet I am not able to demonstrate this passion in terms of getting Bendel Insurance to the top where it was before”, he said.

Oshiomhole disclosed that the government has tried some approaches which have not worked, adding “we have been troubled by the situation in Bendel Insurance and I know that just throwing money at a problem does not solve the problem . Management goes beyond provision of money and nobody is going to give what he does not have. You cannot manage if you don’t have the skill in a particular area of business”, he noted.

He said:“We are blessed in this state with seasoned people who have made their mark not only in Nigeria but outside the shores of this country. Why should we have a collection of such and we are still in the kind of situation that we are. As they say better late than never.

“We must try and do things differently if we are going to have a new outcome. It is as a result of this that we have reflected and we need to rebuild the house from the scratch, not patching it, because at times patching a dilapidated building might be more challenging than building a new house.

“Help us to rebuild a complete new team. Whatever we can do we will do within our limited resources. But I also believe that we all know that funding football is not like funding government agencies. It ought to be as independent as possible.

“In this committee, beside the Secretary to the Government who is the Chairman who we have nominated to reflect the importance we attach to this committee, one that also is strategic so that whatever you discuss, he understands the limitation of government. He also understands the commitment of government and there would be no gap between what you want us to do and getting that conveyed to us. Otherwise this would have been for people not in government,” the Governor added.

“We have an open mind and I have no doubt that you help us to lay the foundation for a new beginning. There are lots of issues you need to address: what is the financial status of the company. You might look at the possibility of rebuilding a new team rather than all these transfers”.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee and the Secretary to Edo State Government, Professor Julius Ihonvbere said the committee would do all within its ability to refocus a team that was once the darling of all.

He said: “We want to assure you that we know that the tenure of this Management team is limited, we would do all we can to live up to expectations and fulfill those terms of reference that you have outlined.”

The committee has three months to conclude its assignment.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday redeployed the Commissioner for Transport, Iriogbe Isimeme Jesse, to Special Duties.

He moved the Commissioner for Special Duties, Oil and Gas, Orobosa Omo Ojo, to Transport.

Oshiomhole said the change, which takes immediate effect, was to strengthen the government.

Also yesterday, two council chairmen, Chief Roland Ibierutomwen (Orhionmwon Local Government) and Roland Alari (Uhunmwode Local Government) were suspended.

Their suspension was approved by the House of Assembly.

Also suspended were councillors and other executives of Orhionmwon council.

The House approved Ibierutomwen’s suspension following a letter from the governor. Alari was suspended after a motion moved by Mr. Kabiru Adjoto.

Oshiomhole sought the suspension of Ibierutomwen and the councilors after youths protested their prolonged absence from duty.

Ibierutomwen, his deputy and the councillors travelled to Italy last week under the guise of going to learn about local government administration.

Alari was removed for allegedly fighting a councillor in the legislative chambers.

  • ‘The weapon against ethnic champions is performance’

‘The weapon against ethnic champions is performance’

From his first day in office, Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has been in the eye of the storm. Even after winning a bruising second term election his actions continue to provoke controversy. He explained to SAM OMATSEYE in this interview that anyone interested in changing things will face attacks. He speaks on the challenges of governing the state, his recent run-in with members of the national conference committee and sundry issues.

Edo is a kind of mini Nigeria in that we have different peoples within Edo, and we have the different religions but that has shown some kind of homogeneity under you. Now, can you in any way speak to the issue of larger Nigeria and how to handle matters like this in terms of approaching the issue of ethnic and religious crisis that is at the bottom of the so-called Nigerian question?

This is a very interesting question. When I said Nigeria is probably one of the easiest countries to govern; this is what I had in mind. You know the normal beer parlour talk and even talk in some high places is that we are detained by some ethnic issues and the country is controlled by ethnic champions. People simply proclaim themselves as ethnic leaders, they were never the result of any formal selection and they appropriate the powers to speak for and on behalf. In Edo we have our own fair share of that, the issue of where the governor should come from used to be a big issue. In fact in my last election; there were groups, my political opponents, they had adverts on television in which they described me a stranger because I come from a part of the state that account for about 35 percent of the population and the Benin kingdom accounts for between 50 and 53 percent and so my opponent who had sworn that he must produce a governor that is of his own choosing that must come from around this particular area of the state has a final pay off for his political services. Because of the way we had handled the issues of mobilizing people on development, he felt that the only way now out, he has to swallow his pride, purge himself of that illusion and because I have become his main enemy, he felt that it doesn’t matter who now the person is, which for me was good that he now recognize that he cannot single handedly choose someone from around his family or his in-law because his initial commitment was that he must make his son-in-law a governor but he recognized that he could no longer do that and the only fall-back project for him was to play the ethnic card and they explicitly put that card on the table and they went for a guy whom they believe or who was described as deep pocketed because he had worked in the army, finance and admin where he was the cashier general and so he felt that the guy has enough money and he comes from the Benin kingdom where they account for 53 percent of the population and they believe that once he plays the ethnic card, the people will then be reminded about where they come from and the need for people to vote according to their tribe but they were shocked. In the TV advert which we can always replay and it was couched in Benin language, they described me as a stranger and then they went on to say that in Benin language that a stranger will always remain a stranger and that whatever he does, when he is going, he will go with it. So people should vote for one of themselves. I couldn’t change where I came from, so I didn’t have any ethnic response to that, but what I was humbled by the fact that even little children in those schools that we have built were also saying in the television that ‘if they say the comrade is a stranger, when he is going, he will go with what he has built, is he going to carry away our school?’ Those who drive on the way said is he going to carry away the airport road? Will he carry the Apkakpava road? Will be carry the streetlights?? Will he carry away the fountain? Will he carry the Oba market? So the people themselves were responding and above all, and I remain ever humble and grateful that easily one the most outstanding royal father we have in this country is the Oba of Benin and he was not persuaded by this sentiment of those who were arguing on ethnic basis and it was instructive what he said the day I went to ask him for blessing to seek a second term. In tradition, his royal majesty speaks through any of the chiefs that he so entrusted to speak and he said the Benin interest means a Benin candidate is the one who will address the needs of the Benin people, not necessarily Benin by blood but Benin in heart, Benin in action, one understands the issues and is determined to address those issues and he believed that by my actions I have proven much more than that and I think the third chief in rank speaking on behalf of the Oba that day says if at old age, a father sees his children messing up his edifice and devaluing it and abandoned the house to rust and someone came and he rebuild the house, he has re-roofed it, is redecorating and then the children come and say ‘drive this man away he’s a stranger’, no responsible father will listen and that what we are doing and what we have done in Benin shows that this governor is more Benin in heart than some of the people who were claiming and preaching Benin. In any case they have had a Benin governor before and it is easy to compere. Now this is the people speaking not me, I am just humbled that people can see that the issue is not where you come from; the issue is what are you able to do for us? I also think that part of the issue why ethnicity assumes such prominence in our political discourse is also the narrow mindedness of our leaders. In my first budget, I made the point, I think I spoke to it earlier, I said we will devote 80 percent of our capital project to Benin City because it is our capital. Every local government is very well represented in Benin city, there is no local government which doesn’t have it people here, living here, some don’t even go home, they only know or they were told when they were born but they have all been living here. So if you touch the life of this city, reposition it, build schools, build road, deal with generational crisis, there is a way in which you can genuinely claim that you have touched every one because every community is represented and so we will start from here and I said the last place I will work, according to my own work plan will be what I call my accident of birth place. I said so in a town hall meeting, they came to me they said ‘ you don’t talk like that, you have to start from your village’ and they gave me examples of leaders who did such a thing. ‘Start from your village because at the end that is where you are returning to. Charity begins at home’ and I said but my villagers could not make me a governor because we have only one polling booth. So if people entrust me with a position of responsibility, I think it is an act of stupidity, not just ingratitude to think that, okay, now you are here, I know where I come from. These people knew where you come from and they entrusted you with their commonwealth to manage. If leaders by their actions show that regardless of your location you will be affected positively by government decision, it will not matter where you come from. Just imagine if you wake up today and you no longer need to buy diesel, you no longer know the telephone number of your generator’s mechanic and you can calculate how much you are saving, not for your employer now for your own house. A government delivers that to you, then somebody comes tomorrow and say that president is not from your area, you don’t even want to know where the president is from but you know that he is someone that dealt with the issue of power and you can see how much you have saved, and how much you are saving and how you are able to use that to deal with other domestic challenges that you have and in the case of your employer, he can see how much it is now much more competitive, the cost in his production cost and he will want to sustain that. If anybody comes and said because the man who did that doesn’t speak your dialect and therefore you should oppose him, you will think that the man is a fool, he is trying to fool you. For me therefore, the weapons against ethnic champions is performance and Nigerians are able to see through that and am not saying it for the first time, when I was in the NLC, it used to be the case that people argue when you want to mobilize against authority that they will use tribalism to divide your rank and file but I was president for 8 years and to start with, those who elected me as president, not up to 10 percent of them are from Edo state, in terms of the population of Nigerian workers. When I had opportunity to call a strike, people in Sokoto, Calabar, Madiuguri, Lagos, nobody ever asked where does comrade Oshiomhole come from to decide whether to follow or not. The Yorubas complied as much as the Hausas complied, as much as the Igbos complied as much as the minorities complied. I remember once at Hilton hotel I met …I BELIEVE he is the son of former president Shagari and he called me out and he said this is comrade and they were all full of praise words when we had photo opportunity and they said ‘you know what comrade, when it is you, you are like Nigeria football, nobody cares for your tribe because your message is so powerful and everybody can connect with it that it will be become an …..to say where is he from? Wherever he is from he knows what our problem is and he is articulating it and he is consistent on it then it doesn’t matter where he comes from. I think the problem of Nigeria is, leaders who are bereft of ideas unable to sufficiently motivate and inspire the people fall back to ethnic sentiment as a defense line. When you are in trouble, rather than account, you appeal to ethnic sentiment so that your tribes’ men will now form a wall around you and you then replace the issue with ethnic sentiment. There was a time, and this for me was the height of this when an MD, I believe it was the MD of NNPC, many years ago under the military he was charged for certain corrupt practices and people from his area went to Lagos with placards …even if the man stole money is he the first person to steal? Now because he is from our area, that is why they are prosecuting him. They never disputed the fact that the allegation against him are weighty and that they should allow the court to determine whether he is innocent or guilty but he has gone home to say that he is being charged because of where he comes from and the people said yes everybody has been stealing, just now that our son who is also doing what others did, why should he be the one that should be prosecuted? So it is those who have no alternative who fall back and because of the level of illiteracy, sometimes, some people believe, but also I believe that when those who are involved in the consternation, both of them are bereft of ideas, they also engage each other based on the ethnic issues and so the only thing on the agenda therefore is not who you are but where you come from.

  • Buhari, Tinubu, Ikimi launch APC in Edo

Buhari, Tinubu, Ikimi launch APC in Edo

Benin City, capital of Edo State was a carnival-like yesterday as the All Progressives Congress (APC) was launched in the state.

It was an occasion that also marked the fifth year anniversary of the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Roads leading to the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia stadium venue of the launch wore new looks as banners from different associations adorned the streets and the stadium.

Youth, women, students and several organisations were at the stadium to grace the occasion.

The crowd gave their affirmative support that the state was in support of the APC after a question was put to them by APC leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

First Executive Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun Oyegun said God has planted a grenade in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that the grenade is separating the sheep from the goats in PDP.

Chief Oyegun warned that the battle for 2015 would not be easy even if the G-7 governors joined the APC.

According to him, “The battle ahead of us is not an easy one. We must be ready for every possible eventuality. The PDP will not surrender power. The APC must seize power. That can be achieved by all of us. The mobilisation must start today for us to seize power. We must make it expensive for anybody to attempt to rig the 2015 election. The APC is a serious party.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Chief Tom Ikimi said the people of the state are determined not to go back to what the state was 10 years ago.

He said “The PDP is dead and buried. It is finished. It is dead, in Edo, Kwara, SOkoto, Kano and all over Nigeria . Arising from the ashes of the burial of PDP is the APC.”

Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri, predicted that the APC was destined to rule the country.

Former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari said the APC was out to solve economic and security problems of the country.

“We know the difference for five years now in Edo state. We are happy that the governor is coming along with the APC. The APC would ensure peace and stop terrorism and reconstruct the infrastructure for Nigerians to enjoy. It is important for you to pass the message to others that APC is determined to take over in 2015 and manage the country effectively. Nobody will ensure that the votes count excepts you”.

Tinubu hailed the people for snatching victory from ‘election thieves.’ And congratulated Oshiomhole for making the people the cornerstone of his developmental policies.

He described Edo as the state on a shinning hill that brightens Nigeria saying Oshiomhole redefined the sense of patriotism because it is about the people.

To him, the destination of the APC is the federal government at the centre. He explained that they came out with APC for a lasting change in the country.

Tinubu lampooned the federal government for lying to the people on economic growth of the nation saying people were still suffering.

He said, “Power is not easy to surrender but we want it in an honest manner. We are tired of failure. How do you give statistics that the economy is growing and we are still suffering? You have GDP that is growing and we have army of unemployed youth. We have to change this government.

“The APC has come with a rescue boat to rescue Nigeria from the thieves. They steal in hundred, of billions. We have to send them out. Oshiomhole has enough ambulances to send them out of here, out of Abuja and out of Anambra.”

Governor Oshiomhole said his administration had delivered on electoral promises in building infrastructures and creating environment for businesses to thrive.

He said the painful decisions he took have led to building of roads, providing water and schools across the state.

Oshiomhole said “the challenge is to focus on the economy. Having spent so much to build infrastructure, this is meant to create enabling environment for business to thrive. I am happy at the response we are getting. The private sector, from agriculture to palm oil, they are all coming to Edo State to set up business”.

“We have people who are coming to Edo state to set up fertilizer plant. We are refocusing on security and appreciate the role of our security agencies. Our House of Assembly have risen to the occasion and has approved death penalty for kidnappers and Edo state is no longer safe for criminals because this governor will sign death warrant as soon as it comes my way.

“We are delivering and not just talking. In our second term we have started commissioning projects. Over the past three days we have commissioned five roads and the five junction and we have more than one hundred projects to commission between now and December, you will see all the things that we have been doing with your money.”

“Between November last year and November this year we have paid to major contractors about 36billion naira certificate generated from road construction, schools construction and hospital construction and we recognize that our allocation from Abuja is barely over four billion” he said.

Oshiomole declared “every month we pay to contractors about three billon naira. Edo State devotes about 85% of the federal revenue on capital projects that people can see. Our market women who were in the past used during election and abandoned, we have empowered them by giving them cash to rebuild their markets.

“Today I want to remind you of how we started. In the past Edo State was a one party state, controlled and manipulated and dehumanised by a few godfather who turned the state to a personal estate. The were celebrated not for fixing roads, electricity. Education or healthcare, but celebrated for declaring winners as losers.
