Businessman advises Adebayo to run for president

A politician and businessman based in Daura area of Katsina State, Nalado Yusuf, has called on the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, to re-contest in 2027.

Adebayo, an Ondo State-born lawyer, businessman and public affairs commentator, has remained loyal to the SDP after the 2023 elections despite reported overtures from other parties.

Describing him as a politician to watch ahead of the 2027 polls, Yusuf said his experience and background were enough reasons for him to present himself again to voters in 2027.

He said Adebayo’s continued allegiance to the SDP underscored his reputation as a principled politician rather than a roving aspirant in search of an electoral ticket.

He noted that his consistency and personal wealth suggested he was driven more by a desire to reform the country than by personal gain.

He said during the 2023 campaign, Adebayo ran under the slogan “Hope Again 2023,” which he said could be reworked into a 2027 message focused on national “rescue,” particularly in response to Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges.

“Beyond politics, Adebayo is the founder of King Adebayo Film and Theatre Arts Network (KAFTAN-TV), a television station and has been involved in business and philanthropy. This mix of private-sector experience and public engagement positions him well to address Nigeria’s complex governance issues,” he stated.

On economic reform features, he said: “Adebayo should ensure turning around Nigeria’s economy as a matter of priority. He should give it the attention it deserves and the transformation it needs. The value of the Naira should be raised, revenue generation should be commensurate with the earnings of any payer, budgets should be implemented fully, foreign investments should be encouraged and debts should be managed sincerely while attempts should be made to offset it gradually, but unfailingly.”

On the security front, he said it was another central concern, stressing that insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, had disrupted economic and social life and required decisive action, including better deployment of security forces and greater use of modern technology such as surveillance and intelligence-gathering tools.

He highlighted education, agriculture and social welfare as areas that need urgent attention. “Proposals include increased budgetary allocations to education, improved welfare for teachers, the introduction of modern agricultural technology to boost food production, and expanded access to health care, clean water and housing. Skills acquisition programmes and social support for vulnerable citizens are also seen as critical,” he said.

Speaking on industrialisation, he called on Adebayo to consider the revival of the moribund industries, encouragement of new manufacturing ventures and incentives for investors.

He stressed the need to revitalise the civil service, ensure timely payment of salaries and pensions, clear debts owed to contractors and promote transparency in governance.

Encouraging Adebayo not to give but to draw inspiration from the late Muhammadu Buhari, who tried several times before becoming president, he said: “Your Excellency, you have seen it all. Apart from being a lawyer and a businessman of international repute, you are equally a philanthropist who also has been familiar with the art of governance. It is, therefore, a duty on you to present yourself again for election in 2027.  After all, the late President Buhari gave a shot at the presidency about three times before he could finally tear the net in 2015.”

Responding to a question of who he would have supported in 2023 if he did not support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, he said he would have supported Prince Adebayo, whom he said comes across as somebody who understands the country’s issues.

Although he supported Atiku in 2023, he stated that in 2027, he would not go that route again since the new conversation is centered on a candidate with competence, character and the courage to move the nation forward.

Tinubu’s economic team needs more steam, says Adebayo

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Oluwole Adebayo, has called for a rejig of President Bola Tinubu’s economic team.

Adebayo, who spoke yesterday on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” noted that the President’s economic team has not demonstrated sufficient zeal in tackling the nation’s economic challenges.

According to him, President Tinubu does not need to go outside his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to find better hands to run his economic team.

“The problem is that the way he has set up his economic team, there is no sign that they are proactive. They are only reacting to the consequences of their earlier actions. So, they are perpetually defending, perpetually behind. So, the economic team is not nimble enough; it’s not sharp enough.

“Even if he doesn’t go outside his party to look for people to run his economic team, within his party he has a lot of talents within the rubric of their own belief. He has not even used the best of APC people,” Adebayo said.

The businessman expressed surprise that despite all the money the Tinubu administration reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal, it was still borrowing to fund the budget.

The SDP stalwart said President Tinubu needed to stop talking about what he met on the ground because what he met was the fulcrum of his campaign, and he eventually won election.

Nigeria’s Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, praised Adebayo for his unwavering dedication to affordable housing advocacy and his impactful contributions to the housing industry in Africa.

“Festus Adebayo has been a critical voice in housing reforms, pushing for affordable housing solutions and creating platforms for constructive engagement between stakeholders,” Dangiwa remarked.

The Minister noted that through initiatives such as the Africa Housing Awards, Adebayo has inspired industry-wide collaboration and fostered a new wave of optimism for housing development in Nigeria.

Former Minister of Mines and Solid Minerals and chairman of the occasion,   Musa Sada,  lauded Adebayo’s efforts, describing him as a transformative leader in the housing sector.

Sada praised Adebayo’s pioneering work through Housing TV Africa and the Africa International Housing Show (AIHS), which he described as the largest housing exhibition and conference platform on the continent.

Adebayo condemns move to banunder-18 from tertiary institutions

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has condemned the move to peg the admission age into tertiary institutions to 18 years.

Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, recently proposed that candidates seeking admissions into tertiary institutions should be up to 18 years.

Reacting to the proposed policy, Adebayo said it was wrong to deny a brilliant candidate an admission because of age. ” How can you come out and say that a brilliant kid cannot go to the university because he is not 18 years old? When I got admission to study law at the University of Ife, I was 17 years old. So, many of these new policies that they are bringing out now don’t make sense, and these are all the things that make people think that this government is not thinking through many of their processes .”

Adebayo also poked at the ostentatious lifestyles of government officials, whom he claimed asked Nigerians to tighten their belts but refused to lead by example. Instead, they are living large, which, according to him, makes the people angry.

Adebayo said he is one of those who don’t want the government to fail, but the officials’ actions so far point in the direction.

  • Wages: Adebayo faults labour union

    Wages: Adebayo faults labour union

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential flagbearer in the last 2023 general election, has taken a swipe at the labour union, accusing it of chasing the federal government over the wages of its members, rather than dealing with the core policy and employment related matters.

He said the movement, as currently constituted, is worse than the government it is trying to chastise for inefficiency.

According to him, labour should stop following the government up and down over wages, deal with the core policy, deal with the issue of employment, and with the issue of purchasing power.

According to him, the only connection between wages and the prices of goods is the cost of living allowance adjustment. “If things are rising, you adjust. But you must come for the point of view of purchasing power.”

For the labour movement to have a strong and larger base, Adebayo said it must ensure that more people are gainfully employed. That, according to him, is the only way it can be said to be truly representative. “Organized labour is a subset of the Nigerian political class. They don’t represent the workers.

“I am not saying that to insult the present leadership. Before you can be a member of the Labour Congress or TUC, you must have a job. And there are more people without jobs than people with jobs. So, if you are unemployed, you are not a member of any labor union because it’s only for workers. So, the challenge we are facing is how to put more people in the workforce.”
