  • Adebule, APC chiefs strategise for Sanwo-Olu’s victory

Ahead of the Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule and All Progressive Congress leaders in Ojo Local Government Area yesterday strategised for the victory of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other APC candidates in the poll.

The leaders lamented the turnout of voters in last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly polls in the area, stressing that everything would be put in place to ensure a better outcome in the forthcoming coming elections.

Rising from an emergency Stakeholders Meeting at Iba to review the result of the last elections, Adebule who met with the APC stalwarts comprising G39, party executive, representatives of market men and women, APC Youths, appealed to stakeholders in the area to work for the success of the party in the Saturday poll.

She urged the people to consider the future of their children and the development of their communities above other selfish interest while making political decisions.

She told reporters that all the stakeholders have resolved to forge ahead and work harder and ensure that they deliver all the polling units in the areas to the party’s candidates

She said: “We are now going back to the drawing board because, we don’t want to make the same mistake we made in the last elections, our people did not come out as expected which gave our opposition an upper hand. One thing that I am very positive about is that we have now put measures in place to ensure that come, March 9, we will not be found wanting again.

“The next elections are very important to the development of our state and our people too, so we are determined as a people that all our candidates will receive massive votes form our zone by the grace of God.”

The deputy governor, while commending INEC for doing a good job in the last Saturday elections adjudged to be free, fair and credible by various observers that monitored the exercise, urged them to work harder and ensure that other technical areas like the card readers and other machines for the elections work perfectly so as to further build public confidence and trust in their efforts.

Former member of the House of Representatives Cornelius Ojelabi noted that Ojo area had not in the recent times recorded such unimpressive performance in any national or state elections, citing anti- party activities, disloyalty and poor turnout of members as some of the reasons the ruling  party underperformed in the elections.

“Let me warn us that our outing last Saturday has negative consequences on us, remember this is the council that produces the current deputy governor. We have members in the House of Assembly, all our council chairmen are APC, we should not betray the confidence reposed in us by the leadership of our great party at the state level. I am confident that we can do it again. We only need to retrace our steps and rededicate our commitment to our party. Let’s ensure that on Saturday, we all come out in large number, put the problem of last week Saturday behind us and ensure that we deliver all our polling Units, Wards and the entire council areas to our party,” he said.

He urged them to give them massive votes so as to guarantee victory of the remaining APC candidates in the rescheduled National Assembly elections.

While pledging the support of the Igbo community to the party in the next elections, Coordinator of the Southsouth Lagos West Senatorial District, Chief Amos Napoleon, said it was the joint resolution of all the people of the region to vote for the APC.

Lagos State government, he said, did not discriminate in the provision of infrastructures in the state, adding “there is free primary and secondary education for all and sundry irrespective of language or tribe and largely, there is peaceful co habitation with every Igbo sons and daughters in the state.”

The number two citizen stressed that the Ambode administration has also re-introduced voluntary organisations such as Red Cross, Boys Scout, the Boys Brigade, amongst others, to explore the virtues of discipline, obedience, leadership traits and team spirit in public schools across the Centre of Excellence.

“We have fenced and gated all public schools in Lagos State to ensure that our students remain in the school premises particularly during the school hours and to also prevent intruders and the spate of kidnapping.

“More teachers are being recruited and teaching aids provided to enhance quality of learning and our desire is to rejig students-teachers ratio and reduce pupils over-crowding,” she explained.

The Executive Director of HDI, Olufunsho Owasanoye, said it is important that all stakeholders in the education sector work together to put an end to quiet corruption in public schools in the state because of its negative long-term impact on the society.

  • Adebule, Islamic cleric, ex-VC proffer solution to poverty, insecurity

Zakat, the Islamic way of wealth redistribution, can be deployed in fighting poverty and insecurity, Lagos State Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule has suggested.

Speaking yesterday at the 14th Zakat Distribution Ceremony of the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF) at the Lagos State Secretariat Mosque in Alausa, Ikeja, Dr. Adebule said Zakat payment would promote economic equality and love.

About N142.9 million was distributed to 1,516 beneficiaries at the ceremony.

Mrs Adebule, represented by Lagos State Chairperson of College of Nigeria Pathologists (CNP) Prof. Fatimah AbdulKareem, said: “When we take from the wealthy to distribute to the appropriate beneficiaries, there is constant circulation of wealth such that it is not concentrated in the hands of a few.

“Zakat gives rise to relative equality among mankind. It fosters feeling of love and harmony as well as cohesion within the society. In the present day Nigeria, wealth circulates among a few, while the majority languish in poverty.

“The few wealthy ones, unfortunately, don’t feel secure living among the majority who are poor, hungry and angry; thus the wealthy spend so much on security when all it takes is to give out 2.5 per cent as zakat.

“It is economic inequality that results in increasing crime, hooliganism and other vices in the society.  Zakat is a means to prevent all these vices in the society by ensuring social security.”

Commissioner for Home Affairs Dr. Abdullateef Abdulhakeem urged the government to give legal backing to zakat.

He said: “Anyone who possesses wealth must realise that he/she is a distributor on behalf of the giver – Allah. There is so much wealth within the community, but because we have failed to activate our sense of generosity, many people are suffering.

“Charity will do a lot to alleviate poverty in the society. Zakat is something that even the government should give legal backing to. It will be a form of Public Private Partnership that will assist the government to get funds to alleviate poverty.”

Lagos State Chief Imam Sheikh Sulaiman Oluwatoyin Abou-Nollah advised Muslims to prioritise investments in areas capable of reducing poverty among Muslims.

He said: “It is important for us to invest. There is no how we can get to the level that we want to be without investing. It is key for us to invest. Zakat is about enriching the poor so that they can get to the level that is sustainable. We have a lot of challenges in Nigeria to make us surmount the economic challenge.”

Former University of Lagos Vice Chancellor Prof. Bello Rahmon, who chaired the event, said investments should be based on the people’s health needs.

He said: “This is one of the few events to showcase the beauty of Islam. It is an aspect of our religion that must be put to use. The level of unemployment is high. You find hundreds and thousands of graduates roaming the streets. This results in crimes and zakat is one of the ways to get this resolved.

“We must continue to consider the possibilities of setting up institutions that can assist in unemployment and health challenges. We need to set up clinics that attend to ailments in our society.”

ZSF Executive Director Prince Sulayman Olagunju said the foundation was worried about the growing rate of poverty.

He said: “We were deeply touched seeing the number of Nigerians wallowing in abject poverty, which has been one of the propelling forces driving us to step up zakat collections on a yearly basis despite the economic situation.

“Today, with the support of our zakat payers, we are pleased to inform you that N142,938,905 is being distributed to 1,516 beneficiaries in Lagos State out of the N318,152,130 zakat mobilised for this year, as at October 31.

“However, we still have a long way to go as many are still lacking in basic necessities of life such as food, clothing and shelter. We appeal to Muslims to help us create jobs, by contributing their own quota to building an egalitarian society.”

ZSF Chairman Dr. Tajudeen Yusuf appealed to Nigerians to join in the effort to reduce poverty.

“Poverty can be eradicated in Nigeria. We are prepared to work towards its eradication. Poverty is not our own portion as Muslims, so we are not just focused on alleviating but eradicating.

“Secondly, a programme titled KOSOSI Forum will be launched on December 23 through which we seek to equip our economic empowerment beneficiaries in such a manner that they become economically accountable and self-reliant.”

Jaiz Charity Foundation Executive Director Imam Abdullahi Shuaib warned against the danger of not paying zakat.

“Allah gave us the institution of zakat for specific purpose, but some of us are ungrateful elements. Some Muslims are capable of paying, but they won’t pay. Muslims should not be rich and poor at the same time.

“Zakat is a means to bail us out. With the prevalence of poverty in our society, we must make it a habit to pay zakat. It is a potent tool for poverty alleviation,” he said.

  • Lagos deputy governor urges Nigerians to eschew violence

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Idiat Adebule has urged Nigerians to eschew violence ahead of the 2019 general election.

She spoke yesterday at the Eid-prayers at Dodan Barracks Prayer Ground in Ikoyi, Lagos.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that among dignitaries who observed the Eid prayers were the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Works, Power and Housing and former governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.

Adebule said a violence-free election would demonstrate to the world that democracy had come to stay.

“As another election year approaches, I urge Nigerians to conduct themselves peacefully.

“I also urge us to pray for a peaceful coexistence, enhanced national security and continued development of our dear state, Lagos and the country.

“As we celebrate Sallah, we pray to God for wisdom to choose love instead of hatred, peace instead of violence and progress instead of stagnation.

“By God’s grace, the future is bright as long as we allow the rule of law and peace to reign in the country,” she said.

The deputy governor admonished Nigerians to pray for good governance and also sustain their support for the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration.

Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, expressed regrets that rather than engage youths meaningfully, politicians had turned them to political thugs.

He enjoined youths to aspire for political positions, rather than allowing themselves to be used as thugs to foment violence during and after the elections.

“If anybody wants to use you, tell such politicians to bring his or her child. Do not allow yourself to be used.

“My advice to the youth is that you should show interest in politics because you are not too young to run,” he said.

Obasa promised to continue to promote the business of legislature in the interest of the people.

  • Uphold Sallah tenets, Adebule, Chief Imam, others tell Muslims

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Idiat Adebule, Chief Imam of Lagos Alhaji Sulaimon Abou Nollah, The Muslim Congress (TMC) Amir Dr Luqman AbdurRaheem and his The Companion counterpart, Alhaji Thabit Wale Sonaike, have called on Muslims to uphold the tenets of Eid celebrations.

The tenets, they said in their sallah messages, include fulfilment of promise, obedience to Allah, show of mercy, compassion and care for their neighbours.

The deputy governor urged Nigerians to show love and ensure peaceful co-existence in the neighbourhood.

“We must always remember the lesson of this celebration which is fulfilling our promises and shun any act capable of disrupting public peace.

While calling on youths to join hands with government in rebuilding a new nation, she urged them to engage in productive activities that can help to fast track the process of nation building and economic growth.

The deputy governor explained that the all-inclusive governance embarked upon by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has helped to achieve rapid developments in the last three years in infrastructure, tourism, education, urban renewal development and many more, adding that the strategy has helped the administration to build on the legacies of the founding fathers to bring democracy dividends to the door step of the masses.

The Chief of Lagos urged Nigerians to use the sallah ceremony to draw closer to God, to pray for the peace, unity and progress of the nation

Nigerians, the cleric said, should learn and emulate Prophet Ibrahim in uprightness, steadfastness and righteousness.

“He was a man who was steadfast to God in the midst of godlessness and persecutions. He was a man who did not lose hope in God when he didn’t have a child at old age. And when he was finally blessed with a child, his faith was tested when he dreamt that he needed to sacrifice his only child for God. Prophet Ibrahim did not fail the tests of Allah, and today He is the father of all religious people in the world. Allah’s test was not only for Prophet Ibrahim, it was also for his wife and the child to be sacrificed. How are we all coping with the trials of God in our lives? Have you abandoned your Creator for a quick solution to your life problems?” he asked.

Alhaji Nollah enjoined Nigerians to not lose righteousness and join the popular sinful ways “because everyone else is doing so. Let us be steadfast to all that is good and know that the more righteous we are as leaders, government officials, as the governed, as employees, as employers, as wives, husband, children, among others.”

Dr AbdurRaheem said he is thrilled by the sincerity with which Nigerian Muslims across ethnic lines complied with the directive of Sultan of Sokoto & President, Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar that the faithful should align with the lunar counting of Dhul Hijjah as announced by the Saudi Arabia authority.

He said: “The 100 per cent compliance by NSCIA after consultations demonstrates our love for the leadership of this apex body. All Muslims in Nigeria must learn from this exemplary behaviour.

“This period of celebration and merry-making is also an opportune time for us to show empathy to fellow Muslims and Non-Muslims through sharing and giving, by providing assistance in cash and in kind to those in serious need. Let us remain Muslims while celebrating. Let us avoid indecencies, immodest acts, consumption of alcoholic substances and sexual indiscipline.

“More importantly, it is a time for Nigerian Muslims to reflect on the nation’s socio-economic woes, massive unemployment, rising incidence of poverty and insecurity of lives and properties. Let us support our esteemed President Muhammadu Buhari in his fight against corruption and bad governance. It is worrisome and unfortunate that while other countries have continued to enjoy monumental increase in their oil wealth, millions of Nigerians are wallowing in poverty, diseases and destitution because of absence of prudence, transparency and accountability in the manner government businesses are run by the nation’s politicians and technocrats. Let us know that all questionable and impure wealth earned by Muslims as politicians, businessmen, professionals and artisans would lead to perils in this world and the hereafter, because Allah is pure, He will accept nothing but what is pure. Let us imbibe the traits of contentment, discipline, faithfulness, hardwork, selflessness, integrity and patriotism bequeathed to us by the noble Prophet Muhammad.”

The Companion Amir called on Nigerians who are yet to register to vote to take advantage of the extension of the voters registration exercise to register for their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC).

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he said, should also make the exercise a seamless process devoid of hardship for the citizens.

Alhaji Sonaike said: “Disturbing cases of unclaimed PVC is also a source of concern. We call on INEC, political parties and other stake holders to collaborate and fashion out an acceptable device to encourage and make the collection of PVC hitch free. The process should be de-centralised as much as possible. No eligible voter should be disenfranchised on account of flawed process of PVC distribution and collection.”

He called on the legislators to accelerate the process involved in passing the budget of INEC, saying “Everything lawful must be done to avoid throwing the country into an avoidable constitutional crisis and political lock-jam that may arise from the politicking currently going on in the national assembly on one hand and between the legislatures and the executives on the other hand on the quick passage of the INEC budget. We urge them not to treat the bill in the way the annual budget is treated.

In the same vein, we call on the executive and the legislative arms of government not to abandon governance for politics and politicking because of the coming general elections. We hasten to remind our political leaders that they owe Nigeria an obligation to govern the country till the end of their tenure.   We expect for instance that the 2019 appropriation bill should be submitted to the national assembly before the end of September, 2018 and for the National Assembly to do the needful and conclude the legislative process before the of December 2018. Security of live and property should be paramount. Security agencies should be proactive and avoid actions that could endanger democracy.”
