  • Speak out against domestic violence, Ambode’s wife, Adebule urge women

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Oluranti Adebule and wife of the governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode yesterday urged women to speak out against domestic violence, child abuse, rape and teenage pregnancy, among other vices.

They spoke at the Lagos Women’s Forum held at the Police College, Ikeja.

The event was organised to address women’s health and recurring social vices in the society.

Adebule said it was unfortunate that 23 years after the Beijing Declaration, women were still facing many health-cum-social problems.

She urged women to embrace sustainable advocacy and take conscious action on matters concerning their health and how they were treated by the society at large.

“We should no longer be stereotyped into silence but become vocal advocates for improved health delivery system and social justice for women in the state and the country.

“As critical stakeholders, our role must be focused on investing and increasing access of more girls and women to good health, quality education; ensuring that laws that respect and ensure the rights of women are enforced and help create gender-posture media messages that support women and girls in distress,” she said.

Mrs Ambode urged women to speak out against domestic violence, child abuse, rape and teenage pregnancy.

She said: “Importantly too, we would be examining the rights of women under the law, in the face of persistent social problems. When we know our rights, we can speak better and act better, to protect ourselves if and when those circumstances arise.”

She reminded women of their role as mothers and coordinators of the family unit, which according to her, imposed on them the responsibility of bringing up their children in the most decent way for a decent and moral society.

According to the governor’s wife, good health was a prerequisite for every other thing, including good attention to children and family, business and even political activities.

“It is when we have good health that we can run around for business, take care of our homes, our children or engage in political activities. When we have sound health, we can better attend to all issues and concerns,” she said.

Mrs Modupeola Adebambo, a director from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development said sexually abused children tended to be sexually active and exposed to teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and alcoholic addiction, among others.

She appealed to parents not to abuse their children, urging them to teach their kids sexual education because of the danger inherent in sexual abuse.

Director, Office of Public Defender (OPD) Olayinka Adeyemi, urged women to speak out against domestic violence and report such cases to the OPD for legal action.

  • Adebule preaches tolerance, peaceful existence

Lagos State deputy governor Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule has called on Lagosians to continue their existing peaceful relationship after Ramadan.

Adebule, in her Sallah message, urged Muslims to imbibe the tenets of the Ramadan which according to her include fear of God, love for one ;;another, tolerance, equality, obedience, abstinence from sins, discipline and caring for the welfares of fellow human beings irrespective of religions and tribe.

She advised them to strengthen their faith in Allah and ensure that they do not go back to sinful acts they may have abandoned during the Ramadan.

“As we celebrate Eid-il-Fitr, remember to pray for our country and our dear state.  Let us unite together and build a strong nation that our children will be proud,” she said.

The deputy governor, who noted that democracy in the country has come to stay despite its initial challenges, called for unity and peaceful co-existence among people of different religions and tribes, adding that Nigerians stand to benefit more as a united nation.

While thanking leaders of various Islamic organisations for using the fasting period to pray for the state, Adebule urged residents to support and pray for the success of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration.

She said various reforms and urban renewal projects embarked upon by the state government would transform the state to a smart city and enhance the quality of lives of the people.

  • Amosun, Adebule, UK Imam for Adegbite Quran Competition

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Idiat Adebule, Chief Executive Officer of Bua Group Alhaji AbdusSamad Rabiu will lead others to the Lagos Quran Competition.

The event is organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit to honour the pioneer MSSN National President and former Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the late Dr AbdulLateef Adegbite.

It will hold on Sunday at University of Lagos Main Auditorium, Akoka, Lagos.

At a briefing yesterday addressed by a son of the late Adegbite, Bashorun Ladi and MSSN Amir (President) Dr Saheed Ashafa at NUJ House, Alausa, the duo promised that the competition will be the largest in Lagos State.

Ashafa said the Chief Executive Officer of Basmallah Institute for Teaching Qur’an and Islam in Ireland, United Kingdom, Ustadh  Harun Thanni, will speak on the theme – Hope for the hopeless.

The topic, he said, is apt because “some Nigerians have already lost all hope in Project Nigeria, but we as a Muslim Students’ body say No! We believe in the Nigerian dream, which to us is still achievable if the government and the led return to the Qur’an.”

He admitted that the country is experiencing difficult times.

“Many Nigerians,” he said, “are beginning to lose hope because things are not working out as promised by this government when they came to power. The  state of insecurity, the rise in prices of most commodities, even as the government tries to stabilise the economy and the unguarded utterances of many Nigerians, some unfortunately from elder statesmen, can spell doom for Nigeria, if not curtailed. We hope the crisis will be nip in the bud soonest.”

Bashorun Adegbite said he was happy to represent the Adegbite family “not only because it’s an opportunity to remember him but a chance to continue his legacies by transmitting those core values for which he had become well known in his life.

“Dr Adegbite touched the lives of many people and was a firm believer in service to humanity. I thank the Lagos MSSN for honouring my father which our family supports. I am particularly excited by this edition’s theme: “Hope for the Hopeless”, which clearly expresses the essence of the life of the late Adegbite.”

  • Rain stops Adebule, Akiolu, Chief Imam from praying at Dodan Barracks

    •’Preach love, tolerance, peaceful co-existence’

For the first time in many years, top Lagos State Government Officials yesterday could not observe the Eid prayers to mark the end of Ramadan at Dodan Barrack, Ikoyi.

An early morning downpour stopped Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, Oba of Lagos, Riliwan Akiolu and the Chief Imam of Lagos, Alhaji Garba Akinola Ibrahim from worshipping there.

The praying ground has over the years become the official venue for the ceremony.

Instead, they joined other worshippers at the Lagos Central Mosque for the prayers.

Those who could not get inside the mosque prayed outside.

In his sermon, Alhaji Ibrahim urged Muslims to be kind to others and emulate Prophet Muhammed.

Prophet Muhammed during his time, he said, was able to convert many into Islam because of his exemplary behaviour. He advised the faithful to remember the prophet’s saying that ‘’no one is a Muslim yet, until what he wants for himself is what he wants for his brother’’.

Urging Muslims to imbibe Ramadan’s tenets he asked them to refrain from sins and vices that could undermine the spread of Islam.

The deputy governor, who came with her husband, Alhaji Saheed Adebule, an Information Technology expert, called on Lagosians to continue to live together in peace. She urged them to sustain the existing peaceful relationship with people of diverse tribes and religions.

Dr Adebule asked Muslims to imbibe Ramadan’s tenets, which according to her, include fear of God, love for one another, tolerance, equality, obedience, abstinence from sins, discipline and caring for the welfare of fellow human beings irrespective of religion, colour or tongue.

She enjoined Muslims not to go back to things they shunned during the fast, noting that one of the exercise of the fasting was for them to be more pious and move closer to God.

“As we celebrate Ed- El- Fitr, let me congratulate our Muslim brothers and sisters for God’s Mercy that has seen us to the end of the month. Let us unite together and build a very strong nation that our children will be proud of and I pray that the Almighty Allah will not deny us the reward of the fasting,’’ she said.

Oba Akiolu described Lagos as a cosmopolitan state that accommodates people from diverse tribes and religions.

The monarch urged the residents to clean up their environment to avoid epidemics outbreak.
