The arraignment of a nurse, Alfred Aderibigbe, at an Osun High Court for allegedly killing Sen. Isiaka Adeleke was yesterday put off till June 8.

Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara-led Coroner Inquest recommended Aderibigbe for prosecution, having shown that he gave Adeleke an overdose.

Aderibigbe told the inquest the drugs were given to him by the deceased.

He insisted he did not give the late senator an overdose.

  • Osun 2018: Akinbade, Adeleke declare interest

Ex-Secretary to Osun State Government (SSG) Alhaji Fatai Akinbade and the lawmaker representing Osun West Senatorial District, Ademola Adeleke, have declared interest in the governorship election holding on September 22.

The duo are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said: “I have the ability to galvanise the electorate towards ensuring victory in the coming Osun gubernatorial poll, just as I have done in the last Osun West Senatorial District election. My late brother, Isiaka, had laid the foundation which is visible to the electorate and I am ready to sustain the legacy.”

Adeleke advised the PDP leadership in the state to give him the opportunity to fly the party’s flag in the forthcoming poll.

  • Adeleke at 63: The beat continues

Adeleke at 63: The beat continues

January 15, 2018 marked the post-humous sixty-third (63RD) birthday of a man, who many people still want to believe is very much around, bubbling with life, making them happy as was characteristic of him during his lifetime.  It is no other, than the amiable, irrepressible, dignified and humane personality, that late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Alanni  Adeleke – the First Executive Governor of Osun State (January 1992-November 1993), The First Asiwaju of Edeland, The First Chancellor, Adeleke University was. The man with many Firsts.

Most colorful and charistimatic politician and statesman and  a towering individual, that Osun State has so far produced. During his lifetime he gave all he had without discrimination, to make his fellow human beings live a worthy life.

When on January 15, 2017, he decided and unusually too, to mark his 62nd birthday modestly at his Ikeja residence in Lagos state, little did we know, that it would be the last of such celebration that we would share with him. The usual practice was for him, to assemble his teeming well-wishers and associates at his Ede Country Home and fraternize heartily with all and sundry – low and mighty. Today, the story is entirely different. We are celebrating him, as we have promised to do, so as to sustain his sweet memory and memorable achievements, as he post-humously turned 63 at the other divide. It is the belief of all those, whose lives he impacted positively, to regard his sudden death, though very painful, as a celebration of a lifetime, so as to make his legacies endure.

We have accepted his glorious transition as the supreme will of the Almighty God, who we cannot query but thank, as  the author and finisher of our fates, for his exemplary and fulfilled mission on earth, which he traversed like a colossus & a political icon. Isiaka Adeleke was a Phenomeneon, a legend, a rare gem, amiable personality and the undisputable  apostle of politics without bitterness. We shall continue to accord his memory the fullest honour and respect, that it richly deserves. Your Excellency Sir, the whole world stood still at your transition to glory. The vacuum created by your death is too big to be readily filled. Tears continue to fill our eyes & flow freely. It is difficult to comprehend, that you are no more with us. Who will ever believe so.

Humanity at your death, came to terms with the stark reality, that your type comes into the universe, once in hundreds of years. You were in the mould of the likes of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Basorun M.K.O. Abiola Chief Gani Fewehinmi, Zik of Africa, Nelson Mandela and few others. That certainly is the home truth. We are convinced, that your Creator took you away at the appointed time, A situation, no human being can influence or alter.

My big Boss-yesterday, today and forever, tears welled up in my eyes while writing this befitting tribute in your memory I have no choice, than to do so. I, like numerous people, shared quality times with you for over twenty-two years. You shared all you had with us. You gave everybody, who came your way the opportunity to enjoy life more abundant, within your limited resources and while doing so, you atimes got broke. But not for you is a dull moment. Your bedroom and Kitchen were opened to all. You never complained of intrusion into your privacy. You had a good and beautiful heart and a readily forgiving spirit. You did not harbour malice towards anybody throughout your lifetime. Your very few political foes even attested to this fact. It is an incontrovertible fact. You were a consummate politician and compassionate family man to the core. You lived a wonderfully beautiful life and served your God to the best of your ability.

You gave hope to the hopeless; voice to the voiceless and help to the helpless. That was you, big boss- Asiwaju Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke. You were not materialistic. Rather you were urbane, classy, trendy  and elegant in your carriage, with your trademark customized glasses, which made you look so beautiful, not handsome.

A show-stopper that you were, your arrival at any political or social events, electrifies the atmosphere. You  instantly became the cynosure of all eyes and the usual shout of de guv, de guv rent the air. You always in return, gave your disarming and arresting gentle smile to the applause of all. You made life and living, liveable for thousands of people. We are pained to the marrows, that all these are gone, but we again glorify God Almighty, for your enviable lifestyle. You lived a life of a Messiah and died as such. Death, where is thy sting?

It was encomium galore, glowing tributes and pure-from-the-heart commentaries, that came your way at death. Nobody spoke ill of you and still do not. To Islamically immortalize you forever, a state-of-the-art-multi-million Naira Central Mosque, named after you and aesthetically finished, has been put in place by your loving family and same is been commissioned today for worshippers. We believe, that all invocations offered there, will be accruable benefits for you and open wider, the doors to Aljanat Fridaus for you. Don’t worry my boss, a glimpse at your imposing grave, assures me and others, that your ever radiant face is glowing with smile. You lived a thoroughly peaceful life, devoid of acrimony, vendatta and unnecessary controversies. You will never hurt a fly.

As it was during your lifetime, your associates of various callings are holding your flag, flying high – asiaa  Isiaka Adeleke, lele lo nfe, so shall it be forever. A Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke Institute of Political Studies is also been contemplated by some of your think tank committee of intellectuals, where as an advocate of politics without bitterness, among your other sterling qualities, politicians, and political science students, would be able to tap into your cerebral works, some of which this writer is compiling for your proposed library. This will be in addition to an annual Isiaka Adeleke distinguished lecture, by God’s Grace. We shall not relent.

Your death has changed the political equation in Osun state in its entirety. The centre  can no longer hold. You remained the reference point and central issue in Osun politics. But to the glory of God, your political legacy of service to mankind, is being nurtured by all those who believe in your cause. Dr. Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke, your brother, through the grace of God, fantastic display of loyalty to your memory by Osun West electorate, emerged as your successor in the red chamber, after a protracted play against concerted forces of fate. Your spirit also rose from the grave to fight the cause.  We wish Senator Ademola Adeleke a successful tenure of office. He is giving a good account of himself at committee works and plenary session. He is learning the political rope very fast and the sky is his limit.

The bill on whistle-blowing, which you presented and championed during your lifetime, promptly scaled through all readings in the Senate and became a law, that has so far attracted, billions of Naira of looted funds to the federal  government since its implementation started Kudos to your distinguished colleagues in the senate, who ensured, that the bill did not gather dust like the PIB. This surely, is another landmark achievements by you, and for which generations yet unborn will appreciate.

Senator Isiaka Adeleke, you are a study in complete humility, perseverance and patience. Your philanthropic gestures- open and hidden, shone brightly at your death, through numerous testimonies from people. The world marveled at your unparalleled kindness to the peasants, who cried themselves silly and uncontrollably, that their benefactor is gone, as there could not be a ready replacement for you, that will relate to them in the simple and unrestricted manner that you used to handle them.

But the Adeleke family  under the divine guidance and leadership of Dr. Deji Adeleke, ably assisted by the Amazon- Chief (Mrs) Dupe Adeleke- Sanni is not leaving any store unturned in maintaining your philanthropic gestures across the thirty local government areas in Osun State. Hundreds of scholarship were awarded on October 8th, 2017, to deserving but indigent students from across Osun West District. Thousands of bags of rice are on monthly basis finding their ways to all the nooks and crannies of Osun State, without consideration for political affliation, religion, tribe or creed. Your death set free, some awaiting-trail-inmates of Ilesa and Ife prisons, whose various  option of fines were paid, at the instance of Springtime Development Foundation, where your twin- brother, Dr Deji Adeleke is the Chairman. Not only were some of the prison inmates set free, those left behind were availed 700 mattresses,  700 pillow at each of the Ilesa and Ife prisons, in addition to skill acquisition equipment. That is you, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, still impacting the lives of those who would have remained in the prison yards for, who knows how long. You are just unforgettable. As a gallant political solder that you were, today is Armed Forces Remembrance Day. May your gentle soul and those of several gallant solders who died at war fronts at various times rest in peace.

As you post humously mark your 63rd birthday  in Aljana Fridaus and we are also celebrating you at this divide, it is only pertinent, to wish the nuclear and extended families and indeed all of us you left behind, the grace of God to trudge on and the comfort from the Almighty to soothe the pains attendant on us from your death – a situation we cannot reverse. We submit to the will of the Almighty, who knows best.

Happy 63rd birthday, the man of the people, a goal-getter, a friend of the masses, that you Isiaka Adeleke was. You live forever in our hearts. The beat continues my great boss, friend and benefactor.

    ‘Golden boy’ Adeleke empowers constituents

Ede, the country home of late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, the first executive governor of Osun State, on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 came alive in no small measure. It once again, as it will be forever, the political hot spot for Osun State. Leading politicians and party faithful of People’s Democratic Party extraction, came in their thousands to partake of Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke 2017 Two Hundred and Fifty Million Naira (N250,000,000.00) Scholarship Award Programme for his constituents.

The ‘Golden Boy’ of Osun politics and the rave of the moment, Senator Ademola Adeleke was at hand, accompanied by his admirers, to receive guests-low and mighty, very warmly. He accorded everybody due recognition. A situation, that made them felt a sense of belonging and completely at home. It was indeed, a pay back day for Senator Isiaka Adeleke, even in death. A re-union par excellence of his political associates from the 30 local government areas of Osun State. Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke in the last three years, became the first Senator from Osun State, after Senator Isiaka Adeleke to embark on massive empowerment programme, major among which was the award of 65 scholarships worth two hundred and fifty million naira (N250,000,000.00) to carefully chosen indigent students from the ten local government areas in Osun West Senatorial District. It was a measure of appreciation and fulfillment of one of his campaign promises made during the build-up to the July 8, 2017 Senatorial bye-election in Osun West District.

The National Chairman, PDP Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, led a powerful delegation of the National Working Committee of the party to the occasion, who immediately on arrival, were led by Senator Ademola Adeleke to the marble vault of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke to pay their respect and offer prayers for the repose of his soul in Aljanat Fridaus. An episode, that once again, made tears to flow freely from the eyes of all and sundry. Senator Isiaka Adeleke, you live forever in our hearts.

In his welcome address, Mr. Banji Adesuyi, Vice Chairman, Springtime Development Foundation, under whose umbrella, the Scholarship Award was organised, said the scheme is a full five-year programme for the beneficiaries, spanning different courses at Adeleke University. He said the Foundation, through a committee, was able to select the best and brightest 65 out of the over 200 applicants, who were considered to be of impeccable character and good moral compartment, that will not taint the good name of Adeleke University, noted for character, excellence and learning. Mr. Banji Adesuyi appealed to the beneficiaries to make the best use of the opportunity offered them so as to justify the confidence reposed in them by Senator Ademola Adeleke, the promoter of the scheme.

The Vice Chancellor, Adeleke University, Ede, Professor Samuel Ekundayo Alao, welcomed the new students very warmly and advised them, to make the best of the opportunity offered them through the Scholarship Awards. He told them, that Adeleke University is a citadel of progressive learning, where discipline and high moral rectitude are the order of the day.

Timi of Edeland, Oba Munirudeen Adesola Lawal, Laminisa I, counseled students generally, to shun vices, that are capable of giving them bad names. The awardees, he said should be good ambassadors of Adeleke University at all times.

In his own address, Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke emphasised, that the occasion was principally to give education a boost, through the sustenance of the scheme instituted in 2007 by late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke. Ademola Adeleke thanked the organizers of the Scholarship Scheme, for coming up with an acceptable list of beneficiaries, and advised the lucky awardees, to live up to expectation by exhibiting good character traits and to always remember the children of whom they are Education, Senator Ademola Adeleke said, is the key to real economic development of all nations and urged, that good part of the national resources, should be dedicated to paying teachers better salary, to enable them in turn, give good account of themselves through qualitative teaching to their students.

The Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Communication, Senator Ademola Adeleke, said in furtherance of huge and consistent investment in education by all stakeholders, the government at all levels should evolve comprehensive and workable programmes, that will guarantee and support our march with confidence to a better future, which is what the prestigious Adeleke University stands for. The Senator stated and I quote: “Everytime a child is forced into avoidable failure, due to lack of proper investment in education, or dropped out of school and fall prey to societal vices, our collective future is diminished.”

Senator Ademola Adeleke informed the audience, that before the October 11, 2017 event, he has embarked on other equally meaningful empowerment programme, among which was the donation and installation of a gigantic MIKANO Generator to the cow meat sellers at Odo-Ori in Iwo, to provide them an alternative source of power generation to refrigerate their meat, whenever there is the usual “NO NEPA.” This he said, was aside the distribution of thousands of bags of rice to all the nooks and crannies of the thirty local government areas in Osun State without political consideration, tribe, creed, sex or religion. An exercise, he noted is a continuous exercise.

Senator Ademola Adeleke, promised to do his best to use his various Senate Committees to benefit his constituents, as much as he could, with a view to attracting far-reaching projects to the ten local government areas in Osun West District. Skill acquisition centres, Senator Ademola  Adeleke reiterated, would be established in some areas of the district, as a means of reducing the problems of the under-privileged, the helpless and vulnerable people and also bring down youth restiveness in the communities. He threw a big challenge to well-meaning members of PDP in Osun State, to close ranks and work as a united family, with a view to presenting a credible and sellable candidate for the 2018 Governorship Race.

The National Chairman of PDP Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who was visibly happy with the massive turn out of PDP faithful at the ceremony, said, Senator Ademola Adeleke, true to his Islamic name – Nurudeen, has indeed brought illumination to the dimming light of PDP in Osun State before he joined it. Makarfi pointed out, that what God used Senator Ademola Adeleke to achieve in Osun PDP, was a “ninth wonder” of our time, asserting very strongly, that the Senator has brought unity, cohesion better understanding and love among members in Osun State.

The National Chairman opined, that with the landside victory recorded by Senator Ademola Adeleke at the July 8, 2017 Osun West bye-election, the governorship seat is up for grabs by the PDP in Osun State, if its members will build on the feat recorded and do not fritter away the tremendous goodwill already extended to the party by the electorate. Ahmed Makarfi called on party leaders to bury their differences and forge ahead with the sole aim of building a stronger, virile and cohesive PDP in Osun State. The National Chairman, was of the opinion, that it is only through the spirit of give and take, that the PDP family in Osun State would be able to wax stronger, stressing that no individual or group of individuals, is bigger than the collective will of the party members. Goodwill messages were also delivered by some of the guests, all of who eulogised the giant stride recorded by Senator Ademola Adeleke, in so short a time he joined partisan politics. The National Association of Nigerian Student (NANs) was adequately represented at the occasion.

Police to quiz Omisore over 2014 assault on Adeleke

Osun State Police Command has invited  Senator Iyiola Omisore, over an alleged assault reported to the command by the late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke in 2014.

In a letter titled “Invitation to Police station” dated October 20, Omisore is expected to meet with Deputy Commissioner of Police (State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence department.)

The letter signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Umege Uzochukwu read: “You are invited to meet with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in connection with a case of assault occasioning harm reported by the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke against you.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 27th day of October, 2017 at about 1200hrs please” But it was learnt that Omisore did not honour the invitation on Friday.

In a statement yesterday, Omisore said he received “the very curious but interesting invitation”

He added:  “We all know that as Nigerians we are living in a very interesting time. The culture now is to source for scapegoats in members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for every inaction of government. The tragic instance in which the late former Osun State governor, a distinguished senator of the Federal Republic, died is still fresh in our memories, particularly the controversy that his death generated across the nation.

“Therefore, I want the public to know about the plot and keep them informed about this sinister plan, which I believe is just unfolding, against myself, some other members of the opposition and even the good memory Osun people cherish about Senator Adeleke.”

  • Adeleke in viral victory dance

    Adeleke in viral victory dance

In a move that appears spiteful of his political opponents, Senator-elect for Osun West, Chief Ademola Adeleke deployed his dancing skill in a mesmerizing video that had gone viral on the social media.

Ademola Adeleke who defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the eve of the Osun by election, contested against Mudashiru Husain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating the latter in a landslide victory on July 8, 2017.

But beyond the political undertone that the victory dance might portray, it presented a further understanding of the entertainment gene in the Adeleke family of Ede, Osun State.

Not only is the new Senator an uncle to award-winning hip hop singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido, he is also father to ‘Cucumber’ crooner B-Red.

Prior to his latest dance, a video of a similar performance, albeit with a white lady reigned on social media. Many had thought this was derogatory to his political career, especially as he had no previous political standing before being presented for the Osun by-election in place of his brother, Isiaka Adeleke, whose sudden death sparked controversy in the state.

“They conducted themselves in a peaceful, friendly and ideal atmosphere for the election. They have set a model or standard for others to emulate.

“The people of Osun West have shown us how elections should be conducted.”

Soyebi said if the electorate conduct themselves peacefully, like Osun West did voters did last Saturday, the work of the commission would be easier.

He pledged to introduce free medical care and free interest microfinance in his constituency.

To APC, Adeleke advised the party never to abandon a candidate with winning potential.

He added: “I followed all the electoral processes and I was declared unopposed in the primaries until they started their manipulations.

“I used to be in the PDP and I am back now.

“My interest was in APC, but it was when I got there we discovered that they didn’t practise democracy.”

Osun West by-election: Fayose congratulates Adeleke

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has urged Osun West senator-elect Ademola Adeleke to see his victory in last Saturday’s by-election as an invitation to serve his state, Nigeria and mankind.

Fayose, who is also the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, congratulated Adeleke.

In a message by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor urged Adeleke to represent all his constituents without discrimination.

He said the victory showed that Ademola’s elder brother, the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, whose death led to the by-election, did not die in vain.

Fayose also hailed Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as being an epitome of democracy by conceding defeat.

The Ekiti governor noted that this is a virtue many politicians lack.

He also hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its transparency, adding that the electoral umpire should maintain this in future elections.

Fayose praised security agencies for preventing a breakdown of law and order during the by-election.

He said: “After an election, what should come next is how to bring dividends of democracy to the people; how to continue with the legacy of the Adeleke family, which accounted for the love displayed by the people for you and which translated to the electoral victory.

“You are responsible to all your constituents without discrimination of any sort. Having been born to a family of great politicians, with your father serving as a senator in the Second Republic, your elder brother being a former governor and senator; no doubt, you must have undergone political tutelage that you should put to practice to excel in your new calling.”

  • Osun West poll: Adeleke’s victory excites Makarfi, Sheriff

Osun West poll: Adeleke’s victory excites Makarfi, Sheriff

•Adeleke: my victory gives hope to Osun PDP in 2018 poll

The victory of Mr Ademola Adeleke in Saturday’s  Osun West senatorial district by-election appear to have renewed hopes in the two factions of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ali Modu Sheriff’s leadership and the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the party have continued to bask in the euphoria of the PDP candidate’s victory.

In a statement yesterday by the spokesman of the Makarfi group, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the party described the victory as a reflection of the reawakening of Nigerians to the alleged deceit of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

Makarfi mocked the APC, saying the electorate in Osun State rejected the ruling party.

The statement said: “The people have spoken with one voice and we know that Ademola Adeleke will deliver on his promises to the people.

“The successful outcome of this election is an evidence of hard work, dedication and the unity of all members of the PDP in Osun State who buried temporary differences in the overall interest of the party and the good people of Osun State.

“We are confident that without the interference of the APC in the current leadership issues in our party, the PDP remains the party to beat in all elections in Nigeria.

“Even as we await the judgment of the Supreme Court, we urge our members to unite in the interest of Nigerians to rid the country of the horrible APC government.

“Finally, we congratulate the people of Osun West for coming out en mass to vote for our candidate and for their peaceful conduct during the election. We also congratulate our members in Osun State for this important victory.”

In a separate statement, the party’s National Secretary, Prof Wale Oladipo, said the outcome of the poll reflected the wishes of the electorate.

Oladipo hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and the electorate for the peaceful conduct of the poll.

The party’s secretary noted that the peaceful conduct of the by-election rekindled hope in the nation’s electoral system.

He said the PDP’s candidate won the election, despite all odds and the power of incumbency “nakedly displayed” by the APC-controlled state government.

Oladipo attributed the victory to the absence of impunity through which Adeleke was elected, adding that PDP’s leadership refused to impose a candidate for the election.

The statement added: “We have to thank all the stakeholders in the bye election for their peaceful conduct and for allowing the votes of the electorate to count this time around -no tales of inconclusive election.

“We are very happy as a political party. The outcome of the election reflected the wishes of the Osun West senatorial district electorate.

“INEC’s officials, security agencies and the electorate, by their exemplary conduct, have made a great contribution to deepening our hard-earned democracy.

“The future of the country is very bright if INEC will continue to handle future elections in the country as it did in the Osun by-election.”

Senator-elect for Osun West Senatorial District, Ademola Adeleke, yesterday said his victory in last Saturday’s by-election brought hope to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next year’s governorship election in the state.

He also said his victory on the platform of the PDP was a testament that Nigerian democracy was alive.

Addressing reporter in Ede, Adeleke said Nigerians must allow democracy to continue to grow as the people of Osun State have demonstrated in the by-election.

The senator-elect said his victory proved that the power of incumbency could be defeated at the poll, if there was a collective will to achieve a good purpose.

He said: “The PDP’s victory in the election was a glimmer of hope and light in the party. It would surely shine forth and pave way for another victory yet again in the forthcoming governorship election in the state next year as well as the general election in 2019.

“My middle name, Nurudeen, means light (in Arabic); in Yoruba, it means Imole. So, my new position as a senator would bring light to Osun State and Osun West constituency for dividends of democracy. With light, the darkness pervading the land and poverty and backwardness among our people would be over.

“I promise to tread on my late brother’s people-oriented path. I will toe his path the way he cared for the less privileged through empowerment programmes and put smiles on their faces. I have learnt enough from him.”

Adeleke announced a N250 million scholarship for the education of indigent children in his constituency.

He said the scholarship would soon be shared equally among the 10 local government areas in Osun West.

  • Osun West by-election: Will Hussain succeed Adeleke?

Osun West by-election: Will Hussain succeed Adeleke?

In this piece, Tunde Oladunjoye writes on the Osun West Senatorial by-election and the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Senator Mudashiru Hussain at the poll.

Given available statistics, that are quite verifiable, we can now firmly declare, barring unforeseen circumstances though, that Senator Mudashiru Oyetunde Husain is evidently tipped to return to the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly after the conclusion of the July 8, 2017 Osun West Senatorial by-election.

As he coasts to victory on the election date, it will be history beckoning to Husain again to return to the exalted seat, which he vacated in 2015 in deference to leadership of his party, All Progressives Congress (APC) which directed him to step down for late Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, who had earlier defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to join the emergent mega-party, (APC) which had just landed on the political scene with a big bang in the year 2015 and eventually, and historically, sent the incumbent government at the center packing.

Senator Husain had earlier in April 2011 defeated Senator Adeleke in the Senatorial election of that year.  Husain had scored a total 121,971 votes to trounce Adeleke, the incumbent Senator who scored 77,090 votes. The winning margin was a whopping 44,881 votes in favour of Husain.

Historically, the progressive political parties starting with the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), through Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and now, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have since 1999 till date out-performed the conservatives as represented by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in the State of Osun.

The only period the conservatives took charge of the State of Osun was when the PDP was touted as the winner of the governorship election of 2003, which enabled the PDP to be in power for almost seven years, no thanks to the manipulative politics introduced by the PDP, and which was shamelessly encouraged by the power centre in Abuja at the time in question.

A court verdict was to terminate the illegitimate hold of the PDP on the State of Osun and which happily returned power to the progressives with the inauguration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in October 2010 as the authentic winner of the controversial governorship election of April 2007.

With regard to the latest Senatorial election in Osun West, it cannot be contested that the progressives, as represented by the APC, are still far ahead of the conservatives in the PDP, as typified by the outcome of political contests between the two in the not-too-distant past.

In the first instance, in the April 2011 Senatorial election in which Husain of ACN trounced the then sitting Senator, Isiaka Adeleke, of the PDP, the ACN netted 121,971 votes as against PDP’s woeful 77,090 votes. The margin was quite awesome with 44,881 votes in favour of ACN.

Again in the Senatorial election of March 2015, the progressives who had by then come together, out of sheer political expediency, to form a mega-party as in the All Progressives Congress (APC), thoroughly floored the PDP. While the APC coasted to victory in that election with a whopping 133,009 votes, the PDP only managed to take home a pitiable score of 79,296 votes, leaving a wide margin of 53,713 votes again in favour of APC.

The impressive performance of the APC in that particular election it must be acknowledged however, was buoyed further by the defection of the duo of Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Isiaka Adeleke, popular grassroot politicians from PDP to APC earlier that year.

Much earlier, in the 2014 gubernatorial election, Ogbeni Aregbesola of the APC won a landslide victory with an impressive score totalling 132,822 votes while Iyiola Omisore of the PDP scored 97,285 votes with a wide margin of 35,537 votes also in favour of APC.

Moreover, the State Assembly election in 2015 also presented the APC as a clean winner with a total of 109,783 votes leaving its arch-rival, the PDP with only 51,540 votes. A wide margin of 58,243 votes was thus secured deservedly for the ever-dominant APC.

Considering the voting strength of both the APC and PDP, the two dominant parties in the coming by-election especially in the critical local government areas of the two leading candidates, Husain and Adeleke, it would be seen quite clearly that the APC remains ahead of the PDP.

In the 2015 Senatorial election, for example, in Ejigbo LGA, the home base of Husain, the APC scored 17,420 votes while the PDP scored 10,029 votes.  In Ede North LGA, the home of Adeleke, the APC scored 16,234 votes while the PDP got 10,427 votes. In Ede South, also home to Adeleke, the APC again scored 12,344 votes with the PDP going home with only 6,746 votes, a little over half of APC’s grand score.

In the State Assembly polls also in 2015, APC scored 11,481 votes against PDP 9,423 in Ede North LGA, while APC scored 9,679 votes as against 5,409 votes obtained by the PDP in Ede South LGA. In contrast in Ejigbo LGA, the same APC received an impressive figure of 17,956 votes as opposed to the PDP’s miserable collection of a mere 5,455 votes, a third of APC’s wholesome worth.

In the governorship election of 2014, the APC grossed 15, 403 votes while PDP went with only 10,427 votes in Ede North LGA. In Ede South LGA, the APC scored 11,738 votes while PDP obtained only 7,462 votes. And in Ejigbo LGA, APC again, made an impressive showing having scored 17,700 votes vis-à-vis 12,490 votes left for the PDP.

Ede, the home-based of the late Isiaka Adeleke and his younger brother contesting on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will not be a work-over for the PDP.

One, the late Adeleke himself, had successfully the PDP to sleep in the town so much so that the party’s Secretariat is in a state of total disrepair and politicians that mattered have since followed late Adeleke to APC and remained in APC.

In terms of political appointments, the Rauf Aregbesola-led Administration has been most particularly generous to Ede zone in the Osun West Secretariat District.  The zone boasts of four commissioners among whom is Chief (Mrs) Idiat Babalola.

In infrastructure, Ede is not left out. The government of Aregbesola has built modern educational facilities at Adventist High School, Ede whose structures are even comparable to that of private university.

Not long ago, the commercial activities of the ancient town got a boost when Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola reactivated the cocoa industry at Ede which has been abandoned since 2001. The factory now produces 200,000 tonnes of cocoa daily with multiplier effects on the state economy, transportation, agriculture and employment with Ede as the immediate beneficiary.

In all the other seven LGAs in the Osun West Senatorial District, the APC was clearly in the lead in all the elections as highlighted above.

In the three elections, the margin marks between the APC and the PDP were recorded as follow: Governorship (2014)  35,537 votes; Senatorial (2015)  41,054 votes; and State Assembly  58,243 votes, all in favour of APC.

Interestingly still, the accumulative margin range of all the three political contests, as revealed above, stands at an impressive level of 64,359 votes and still in favour of the APC. And this is even more than the total score of the PDP in both the 2014 and 2015 gubernatorial and State Assembly elections respectively.

All these empirical statistics, no doubt, underscore the dominant position of the APC in Osun State politics and not the least that of Osun West Senatorial District where a by-election has been fixed for Saturday July 8, 2017.

The PDP in the State of Osun, like elsewhere in the country, is already in tatters, what with its numerous irreconcilable factions, who continue to work at cross-purposes. Frustrated and determined to bail themselves out of the foggy situation, the remaining few members of the beleaguered party are seen streaming out daily to the APC.

For now and even for a long time to come, the PDP, as it were, cannot claim to be strong and competitive enough to stand in the way of the APC.

It is significant at this juncture to affirm that all the opposition camps – PDP, SDP, LP -, cannot rattle the APC in the by-election. In all these analysed elections, all the votes of the PDP and all other parties that contested in the elections still lagged behind the scores of the APC. Infact, no major upset is anticipated in the coming political battle as the APC is tipped to carry the day.
