Adeniji sets double target with Sunshine Stars

Tunde Adeniji has expressed his desire to win the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title with Sunshine Stars as well as the golden boot award.

The forward leads the goal scorers’ chart with 12 goals ahead of Heartland’s Bright Ejike and Warri Wolves’ Gbolahan Salami, with his team in pole position to lift the league diadem for the first time.

He attributed his fine form this season to regular playing time under coach Kennedy Boboye while picking the Peoples’ Elephants as his side’s biggest threat in their quest to emerge as league champions.

“My turning point this season is the regular playing time I have this season which is far better than last season, and this has helped me get more goals and I want to thank my coaches for their trust in my ability,” Adeniji told Goal.

“So far, Enyimba are our biggest threat towards winning the league title. Since the beginning of the season, we have been rotating the leadership position on the log. If we are not on top, you will definitely find them there.

“I have my sights set on winning the highest goals scorer’s award as well as the NPFL title with my team.”

Sunshine Stars have won just one away game this season, three short of Enyimba and Wikki’s four, and Adeniji attributes that to ill luck while promising his side would get more valuable points on the road before the end of the season.

“We are usually faced with ill luck when we go for away games,” he continued.

“Naturally, there are some games you would think we should have won convincingly away from home but at the end, we settle for a draw.

“If we get fair officiating like we got against Heartland in Owerri, we will certainly get more away victory.

“All we need to do is keep up the momentum, win all our home games and hope Enyimba drop more point then we catch up.”

With his invitation to the Super Eagles camp for September’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania, Adeniji hopes to prove his ability to coach Sunday Oliseh having failed to break into Keshi’s team despite two call ups.

“I feel happy about the invitation and I am hoping to show the Eagles’ technical crew that I am a striker they can depend on for goals,” he concluded.

Sunshine Stars top the NPFL log with 43 points from 23 games and they face Dolphins in their next game on Wednesday.
