ADP urges Muslims to keep praying

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) enjoined Muslim faithful to continually pray for the country and its leaders for better governance.

National Chairman Yabagi Sani said prayer should be the only way to commit the hearts and will of every leader to do right and deliver on mandates.

“I urge us not to limit these acts of charity, love, and sacrifice to the celebration only, but let it be a culture to imbibe now and forever.

APGA, ADP, NRM presidential candidates, others lobby President for inclusion

Presidential candidates of some opposition parties in this year’s general election have urged the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to persuade President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for inclusion in his government.

The presidential candidates said this when they visited Ganduje at the party’s national secretariat yesterday in Abuja.

They were those of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Action Democratic Party (ADP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), and Action Peoples Party (APP), among others.

The presidential candidates, who spoke under the aegis of the Forum of Concerned Presidential Candidates, said the need for peace and development of the country informed their decision not to challenge the victory of President Tinubu at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Spokespersons of the forum and presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), Ambassador Felix Johnson Osakwe, assured the President and the ruling party that they were for peace, hence the need for them to be included in the current government of national unity.

Osakwe stressed that not all the presidential candidates were against President Tinubu’s election victory.

He said: “We are here, sir, not only to see Mr. President but to be identified with you and to thank God for your appointment.

“Also, we see you as a father who has been a commander-in-chief of a state and here you are today to be the pilot that will lead the presidential candidates, especially those who are ready and those who love this country and the interest of this country first before politics, before parties.

“That you will be the right person to lead us to meet with Mr. President so he can hear our views in person and for him to know that it is not all the presidential candidates that are against him.

“We chose not to go to court because this is Nigeria and we have no other country to go to.

“So, we are here to thank you and to thank God and everyone seated here and to say that as presidential candidates, there is something we can offer this country. I believe a government of inclusion will be necessary at a time like this.”

Expressed appreciation to the presidential candidates, Ganduje promised to convey their message to President Tinubu.

He said: “I will convey your views and requests. I will ensure that you see Mr. President eye-to-eye. I thank you for being faithful to your respective parties.

“What I am seeing is one political aspirant who became a presidential candidate by accident, who became a presidential candidate by hijacking another party because he was party-less.

“He decided to hijack a political party. And since, he could not realise his aspiration, he decided to make that party a revenue platform rather than a political party. He has now decided to expel the founder. God forbids. He will not succeed.

“I salute you presidential candidates for being good ambassadors of your political parties, not destroyers of your political parties, and for not turning your political parties into a source of revenue.

“No doubt, we will include you in the three states that we are having elections come November this year. Thank you and God bless.”

The presidential candidates on the visit included Charles Nnadi (Action Peoples Party); Felix Osakwe (National Rescue Movement), Prof. Peter Umeadi (All Progressives Grand Alliance), Dr. Odey Udo (Action Democratic Party’s vice presidential candidate) and Adewale Adeogun (leader of the team).

  • Anti-party: ADP expels National Secretary, 16 others

The National Executive Committee of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) has approved the expulsion of the party’s National Secretary, Dr. James Okoroma and three other members of the National Working Committee of the party for anti-party activities, insubordination and causing disaffection and division among members of the party. The party’s highest decision making body also approved the expulsion of 13 other members of the National Executive Committee and the appointment of Dr. Steve Uwazie as the new National Secretary of the party.

National Chairman of the party, Engr. Yabagi Sani said at a news conference in Abuja that the expelled National Secretary was discovered to have been a agent of the All Progressive Grad Alliance and worked for the APGA governorship candidate in Imo state, Ifeanyi Ararume during the just concluded general election. Sani also said the former National Secretary took the resources of the party and the vehicle given to him as the Director General of the party’s Campaign Council and rebranded it in APGA colours during the elections, while the campaign he was supposed to head suffers.

Reading the resolution of the NEC, the new National Secretary, Dr. Steve Uwazie said one of the leaders of the party in the south-south, Senator Rowland Owie is to appear before the disciplinary committee to explain his alleged involvement in pitching some state chapters of the ADP against the leadership of the party, contrary to the constitution of the party. Uwazie said the NEC unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the party led by Engr. Yabagi Sani and pledge their loyalty to his leadership, while calling on members of the party to rally round him to reposition the party.

  • Rivers elections: ADP heads to tribunal

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has petitioned the Justice Umar Dogon-daji-led Election Tribunal to challenge the declaration of Governor Nyesom Wike as winner of the March 9 governorship election.

The party’s candidate, Victor Tamie Fingesi, in a statement yesterday, said the party is asking the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) to nullify the polls and reschedule a fresh exercise, having earlier admitted that the March 9 election was marred by violence.

He maintained that elections did not hold in the state, and so INEC should void the earlier purported poll, withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Wike and begin the process all over again.

The statement reads: “We have filed a complaint against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Governor Nyesom Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the election tribunal.

“We know many people are unhappy with INEC and Wike’s return as governor-elect, and that is why we are challenging the March 9 election as not substantially in compliance with the Electoral Act.

“We are asking the Tribunal to nullify the election and order for a fresh election. This is because anyone who is the governor in a democratic dispensation carries the people’s sacred mandate. No matter the expediency, he must have a majority of lawful votes and the process and procedure must comply with the laws of our land.

“No attempt should be made in any guise to describe elections as merely filling a vacuum and impose anybody on Rivers people as Governor.

“Our stand on this matter is even corroborated by a statement from INEC that the election was marred by irregularities, so we wonder why INEC would consequently volte-face and return Wike as the governor in such an election.

“We shall pursue the matter to its logical conclusion even to the highest Court of the land. We enjoin the people to remain calm and wait for the outcome of the petition.”

  • ‘I won’t challenge result of Lagos guber poll’

Mr Babatunde Gbadamosi, the Lagos State governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) says he will not contest the outcome of the governorship election in the state but prepare for the next election.

Gbadamosi, a real estate mogul, told newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos that his decision was rooted in him having no confidence in the electoral system.

He said: “My decision is to wait and contest the next election and hopefully, the votes will count then.

“I agree that the election in the state was an absolute fraud and a sham with many instances of open multiple voting recorded in places like Ikorodu, Lagos Island. However, I do not have any more resources to waste on a process in which I have no confidence.

“We keep learning and I believe that the will of the people will surely prevail in future elections in the state.“

He also claimed that the fraud was carried out by known persons going from one polling unit to another, openly bearing firearms of all kinds.

Gbadamosi, however, advised INEC to put its house in order to forestall most of the anomalies witnessed in the 2019 general elections in the future elections.

He stressed the need to prosecute all those involved in electoral malpractices in 2019 general elections to serve as deterrent to others.

The ADP candidate urged the incoming 9th National Assembly to come up with stiffer penalty for electoral offenders, to ensure much better polls in future.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Mr Owolabi Salis, the Lagos state governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) has, however, approached the state Election Petitions Tribunal to challenge the victory of Sanwo-Olu, followed by Mr Fagbemi Awamari, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

The two petitioners prayed the tribunal to upturn the results of the March 9 governorship election, claiming that the election was marred by voter intimidation, vote-buying and multiple voting, adding that Sanwo-Olu was not fit to contest the 2019 governorship election.

The candidates also sought a declaration of the tribunal that, the pronouncement of Sanwo-Olu as the winner of the governorship election was null and void and be set aside, based on the gross electoral fraud and/or gross electoral misconduct that characterised the governorship election in the state.

  • ADP to Alao-Akala: don’t rejoin APC

The  Action Democratic Party (ADP)  leadership has asked former Oyo State Governor and the Action Democratic Party  (ADP) governorship candidate Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala to bury the thought of leaving the party to rejoin the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ADP said it was too late in the middle of the game for Alao-Akala to align with any political party.

It stated that as far as the party’s leadership was concerned, Alao-Akala remains its governorship candidate.

Besides, the ADP said it has embarked on mobilisation of the party’s members and supporters to educate them on the need to reject Alao-Akala’s decision to align with the APC candidate, Bayo Adelabu, in the March 9 governorship election.

Alao-Akala had struck a deal after a meeting with the APC National Leader Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu to support Adelabu in the forthcoming governorship poll in Oyo State.

ADP Southwest Chairman Chief Lateef Arowosaye, in a statement in Ibadan at the weekend, said the party was unaware of any pact with the APC.

According to the party, members and supporters of ADP should cast their votes for all ADP candidates, including Alao-Akala in next Saturday’s election.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to the statement by Otunba Alao-Akala to the effect that he has withdrawn his candidacy from the gubernatorial election in Oyo State scheduled for next week. The ADP wishes to make the following clarifications after consultations at all levels of the party’s leadership:

“We have not been formally informed by Otunba Alao-Akala of his decision to withdraw from the gubernatorial race.

“The gubernatorial ticket belongs to the party and not the candidate.

“The legal department of our party is fully informed and appropriate legal advice is being awaited. The ADP, therefore, remains in the gubernatorial election, moreso when the window of substitution of candidates has closed.

“We call on our teeming members and supporters of the ADP to troop out on March 9, 2019 and vote for the ADP in the gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections.

“The ADP wishes to also state that it is not in alliance with the APC in Oyo State.

“We have campaigned on the strength of our positioning as the credible alternative to the ruling APC in Oyo State. It will, therefore, be ridiculous to turn around at the 11th hour and embrace what we have used the lifetime of the ADP to condemn.

“The ADP is, however, in talks with other opposition parties in Oyo State to give the people of Oyo State a new breath of life. We shall duly inform party members and the public at large of this initiative at the fullest of time.”

  • Titans face tough National Assembly battle in Oyo

Candidates of the various political parties are facing a tough National Assembly election in Oyo State. Governor Abiola Ajimobi, the three serving senators and other political titans are in the race, giving no room for any of them to relax, writes Southwest Bureau Chief BISI OLADELE.

THE race for National Assembly seats in Oyo State is congested and cloudy. Well-known names are on the stage to wrest power from the three serving senators and 14 members of the House of Representatives.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi leads the pack of flagbearers. A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajimobi is contesting for the Oyo South senatorial seat against the incumbent Sen. Adesoji Akanbi of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). A former commissioner for Trade, Investments and Cooperatives, Dr Kola Balogun, is also jostling for the seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though his ticket is still being contested in court by a former deputy governor, Hazeem Gbolarumi. In the Action Democratic Party (ADP), which has been made popular by former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, Dr Fola Akinosun is in the race against Ajimobi and others. The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), which is currently under the leadership of Sen. Rashidi Ladoja, is fielding Nureni Adisa for the Oyo South race.

The Oyo Central race is equally a tough one. The incumbent lawmaker, Monsurat Sunmonu of ADC is slugging it out with former Senate Leader Teslim Folarin of the APC, Temitope Sugar of the ADP, Chief Bisi Ilaka of the PDP and the ZLP’s Mumuni Olaniyan.

In Oyo North, a former House Leader, Mulikat Akande-Adeola of the PDP is up against the incumbent, Dr Fatai Buhari of the APC, Adeleke Adebayo of the ADC, Bashiru Lawal of the ZLP and Ahmed Salawudeen of the ADP.

The candidates have been having sleepless nights, traversing the length and breadth of their constituencies to persuade voters to support them. It is particularly tough, because some of them are either incumbents or former legislators from whom many constituents have benefitted. While the former ones are going round with confidence over what they achieved for the constituency in the past, the incumbents are riding on the crest of their ongoing and recent empowerment projects. Yet, new entrants are also relying on the impacts their political leaders have made on the constituencies in the past, ethnic factor or party popularity.

However, the influence of money seems to tower above all the other factors, as the electorate still distrust politicians, believing that whatever they can extort from them during electioneering campaign is their major profit for supporting them. This fact stares the candidates in the face and gives them no room for complacency as the rescheduled election draws near.

By implication, the voters are embracing all the candidates with open arms, to exploit them before voting for the candidate of their choice. So, determining who earns whose vote remains the greatest headache of the politicians. They seem to be at loss about whom to trust, but are carrying on with the campaign in good faith.

In all of these, however, Ajimobi in Oyo South and Sen. Buhari in Oyo North appear to be more sure-footed in their quest, compared to the other candidates, because they remained in their original parties. Since Ajimobi contested and won on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in 2011 along with Sen. Buhari and others, both of them have remained in the party, which later transformed to the APC. Both of them are incumbents contesting in their original party. The machinery of the governing party both at the state and federal level is sure to work for them. The power of incumbency will also help Sen. Sunmonu and Akanbi and many other ADC House of Representatives candidates in certain ways.

When contacted, however, Sen. Buhari shrugged off permutations. He said he was carrying on with his campaign with a strong hope of victory, because he has never been far from his constituents. He said: “Election is just an exercise. It comes and goes. But I am always with my people, listening to them and representing their interest. So, whether it is election or any other exercise, my people know who I am, and I know who they are. Our bond is tight. So, there is no room for suggestions of failure.”

As for Sen, Sunmonu and Akanbi, both are involved more in direct campaign than through the mass media. They also insisted that names and character of candidates will be a stronger factor in the rescheduled February 23 election. They are also upbeat of trouncing their co-contestants.

But, as the PDP train moves round the state, its governorship candidate, Seyi Makinde, has been standing surety for all PDP candidates in the four elections. He wants people to vote for them based on his own credibility.

Judging by the result of the 2015 elections, the party has a chance to do well in Oyo State. The choice of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate may also work in the party’s favour in the state. This is because the presidential and National Assembly elections are lumped together, voters who prefer one presidential candidate will most likely vote for the same party

  • I’m not in any alliance against Adelabu- Akala

The governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, has cleared the air on the plot by opposition candidates to form an alliance against their All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart Adebayo Adelabu.

Alao-Akala, who is a former governor of the state, said he was not working with the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any other in any form of alliance as being reported in the media.

Speaking through his campaign organisation on Wednesday, the ADP candidate said the reports were aimed at “misinforming and confusing our teaming supporters world over.”

Director General of the campaign organisation, Chief Wale Ohu, said: “At a time, the rumor in town was that he was not serious about his governorship ambition and that he was going to play the role of a spoiler or work for another governorship candidate.

“The most recent is that he is working for the PDP governorship candidate, Engineer Seyi Makinde.

“The Akala Campaign Organization hereby debunks all these insinuations which is the handiwork of the Propaganda machinery of the government in power in Oyo state which is jittery and overwhelmed by the soaring popularity of Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and to state clearly that the former Governor is committed to taking the people of Oyo State out of the political mess they have been plunged into by the insensitive A. P. C government of Sen. Ajimobi since he left office eight years ago.

“Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala has toured the nooks and crannies of Oyo State, taking the message of hope to the citizenry which was received with enthusiasm by the people.

“His Excellency, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala is not into any discussion, alliance or talks with the PDP governorship candidate Engr. Seyi Makinde or any other for that matter.

“That is like the elephant hiding behind a rat when in the real sense. It is the rat that needs the cover of the elephant.

“It is not in doubt that Akala is a political giant who cannot and would never hide under any candidate or politician in the state.

“Rather, it is expected that, considering Akala’s experience and achievements, other young candidates should come together to support and rally Alao Akala so as to restore the State’s pacesetter position in the Committee of States.”

He added: “What is the sensibility behind Alao-Akala dissipating his energy and financial resources over the governorship election if it is for any other motive other than to govern Oyo State again?

“If it is prominence, Otunba Alao-Akalahe has it. If it is wealth, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala is comfortable for the rest of his life so rather, his pursuit is for the emancipation of Oyo State people.

“The Akala Campaign Organisation thereby reiterates that His Excellency, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala is not advancing the cause of the PDP candidate, Engineer Makinde or any other political party or candidate and consequently advises cheap rumor peddlers who want to profit from Alao-Akala’s large image to desist from cheap gossips and get more involved in issues that can move Oyo State forward.”

  • Akala‘s son suspended as Ogbomoso council chair

The Chairman of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Hon. Olamiju Alao-Akala, has been suspended from office.

He is the son of former governor and governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Olamiju was elected chairman along with 56 others on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But he dumped the party last week to join his father in the ADP.

His suspension may not be unconnected with the defection.

A letter signed by four councillors in the council said he was suspended for gross misconduct, adding the decision was taken after a legislative council plenary on Friday.

Meanwhile, the suspended council boss has urged people to be calm, stressing that he remains the chairman of the local government.

His words: “The development is not only illegal but also a comedy script written by the power that be and acted by amateur actors and actresses involved”

Reacting to the development on Facebook, Alao-Akala’s camp alleged the councillors were forced to sign the suspension order by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Alao-Akala quoted Hon. Adebowale Oyejoke, one of those who signed the resolution, as saying that they were summoned to Government House where they were ordered to sign the prepared resolution in the presence of the governor.

  • ADP begins ward-to-ward campaigns in Edo

The Action Democratic Party ( ADP ) is to kick start its ward-to-ward campaigns across the three Senatorial Districts of Edo on Monday.

The party’s candidate for the Edo-South Senatorial district, Mr Ese Owie, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin on Wednesday.

Owie, who said that the ADP was poised to win all the available elective positions in the state during the impending general elections, stressed that the people have shown a readiness to change the existing order.

According to him, “The people of Edo State now have a renewed determination to do away with the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives’ Congress (APC).

“They have now come to see a better choice in our party, the ADP, a party that has come to change their fortunes for the better.’’

The ADP candidate noted that the essence of the ward-to-ward campaigns was to take the message of hope to the people in their neighbourhoods throughout the state.

“While I, as the party’s Senatorial candidate will be touring all the 77 wards in Edo-South with the message, similar activities will be taken across all the entire 192 wards of the state.

“Starting from Monday and for the next two weeks, I will going round the nooks and crannies of the 77 wards of Edo-South.

“The message is clear, and other political parties know it, that the ADP is the party to beat come February,’’ he stressed.

The ADP is one of the 91 registered political parties in the country.

INEC announced on Monday that there were 84, 004, 084 voters registered to vote in the 2019 general elections.
