Lobi Stars are ambitious team and we have our set target for the season. The players know that they have to give their best to the team all the time and the management is ready to give technical crew maximum support to achieve their aim,” Imenger told SportingLife.

Rangers axe Agbim after Wikki spanking

SuperEagles goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim has been left out by Enugu Rangers in this weekend’s league clash against regional rivals Heartland after he let in four goals in a 4-2 loss at Wikki Tourists.

Nigeria U-23 shot stopper Emanuel Daniel will therefore man the post with Itodo Akor on the bench.

Rangers sources said officials are unhappy with Agbim’s performance at Wikki, where he let in four goals in the first half.

Agbim rejoined ‘The Flying Antelopes’ as a free player from relegated Gombe United.

Meanwhile, former FC Inter Enugu and Heartland right full-back Onyekaozulu Okoro has joined Rangers.

He had trials with Dolphins before the commencement of this season.

He impressed during a week-long trial with Rangers and signed Thursday morning at Antelope Building.

He brings to four the right full-backs at the club – Chigozie Egwu, Etim Mathew and Haliru Umar.

Agbim: I will move when the time is right

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Chigozie  Agbim is yet to secure a contract with another club, after failing to stave off relegation with Gombe United last season, sl10.ng understands.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper could not help his Gombe United side avoid the drop at the end of last season in the Nigeria Professional Football League, as they finished a disappointing 17th, and subsequently relegated to the Nigeria National League.

The former Nigeria U-17 goalkeeper is presently the third choice goalkeeper for the Super Eagles, and is the first choice and captain of the second string Super Eagles team, largely dominated by home-based players.

But he has admitted to sl10.ng that he is yet to sign with any club ahead of the new season.

“I am still taking my time, I don’t want to do anything in a hurry. I have not signed with any club at the moment, but I hope I can get one soon,” he said.

On whether he would be joining the bandwagon and sign for a foreign club, he insisted that he will only move at the right time.

“I will move when the time is right, when my time comes but I don’t want to rush things. I want to go one step at time,” he said.

He is one of the most experienced players in the NPFL, having featured for teams like Rangers and Warri Wolves, and once had a spell abroad, with Al-Merriekh of Sudan.

    Agbim impresses in training

Nigeria goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim looked determined to prove his coaches right for selecting him, as he continued to post impressive performances in training.

Whenever the goalkeeper took his turn in the post during the sessions, he seemed to go out of his way to frustrate the forwards, especially Emmanuel Emenike and Uche Nwofor.

Both strikers were played through during drills, and Agbim matched Vincent Enyeama and Austin Ejide save for save.

On one occasion, Emenike came one on one with the Gombe goalkeeper, and tried to go around him, but Agbim stood his ground, made himself big and palmed the ball away from the forward, then sprang up quickly, backtracked to his line to fingertip the ball away to safety.

“I’m just trying to do my best,” he told KickOffNigeria.com afterwards.

“Whether I play or not, I just have to be ready because this is football you can be called anytime.”

  • What Enyeama did to me — Agbim

What Enyeama did to me — Agbim

How important is the World Cup for you?

The World Cup is what every player desires. It’s the highest footballing event in the world. That’s the most important thing one is looking for in his career as a player so it’s very important to me.

So how do you prepare yourself for the big event?

I just try to keep fit, play week in week out with my club and try to get myself ready physically and mentally because I know the challenge will be very difficult.

You have been part of the squad for a long time, how hard do you think it will be to make the final squad?

It is very difficult because there is a lot of competition because at the end of the day, the team will have to come down to 23.

But everybody has to work hard and anybody who makes the final list did not just jump in there, it’s on merit.

Some players did not make the squad. Do you feel bad for them?

Yes. But it is something that you can’t change. It is painful for me to miss these players because we have been together for a while. But there are still more World Cups to come and there is still a chance for everybody. I just pray that they keep their heads down and do what they have to do.

Personally, were you worried at any time that your name might not be there?

Not really. I wasn’t worried. I just believed that whatever God says will happen is what will happen. I just kept praying and believing in God that He will do it and I’m going to get there.

You have been training with Vincent and Ejide for a while, what have you learnt from them?

I have learnt a lot. They’ve been in the team for a long time and they’ve played in Europe for a long time. So I’ve tried to take a lot from them.

I would say the biggest lesson I’ve learnt from them is to be tolerant with people.

Whenever they are in camp, the way they tolerate people, the way they behave and the way they don’t allow anything to affect them on the field.

Talking about tolerating people, did you feel bad about the criticism you got for your performance at the CHAN?

Yeah, but not that bad. Because in this world whatever you do people will talk, you do good, they will talk, you do bad, they will still talk.

I just kept my head up and never took notice of what they are saying. All I did was to continue to work hard in training and do what the coaches told me to do, because for me, it is what they say that is important, not what anybody else says.

What did the coaches have to say?

They said I should keep doing my best and not to think about what anybody was saying. That was what kept me going. They just kept encouraging me and telling me to believe in myself and what I can do. That I know myself and I should not give up.

I thank them so much for the confidence they gave me during that tournament even when everything was not going so well because it helped me to do better after that time.

Daniel Akpeyi has come to make the competition even more on you. Are you worried that he might upstage you?

Like I said earlier, it is only God that has the final say. Whatever he says will happen is what will happen. For me, I will just keep doing my best and training hard in camp and believe God that my best will be good enough.

Assuming you get picked for the World Cup, many people are worried that if for any reason you have to play, you may not be ready. Are you ready?

If you are selected in the team, you should make up your mind that you can be called upon to play at any time.

I know that it is possible that I can be called upon to play at any time, whether it is the friendly matches or the World Cup, so I always prepare myself like I am going to play any game so that when I am called upon, I will not let myself or the team down.

How important is it for the Super Eagles. To win that first match against Iran?

The most important thing for us is to win that first game, so that we can have confidence.

I believe that all the players invited know the importance of the first game and I believe that we will work hard and give the very best to make sure we win that first game.

Is there any team that worries you there?

Everyone is talking about Argentina but it’s football and you never know what can happen. But I believe that the players we have in the team can face any team in the world, so I’m not scared.

If we play our game we can beat any team in the world. We just have to work hard and stay focused.

What is the most important thing for the team to do to make sure you win matches?

We just have to believe in ourselves, that is all.

At the Nations Cup we believed in ourselves and we had the confidence that we can beat any team and with the kind of coach we have, the tactics he gives us and the encouragement, we can always do well. He is always pushing the team, always wanting us to do better, to dig deep and bring out our hidden strength and fire.

What would count as a good World Cup for you?

To make the World Cup would be great and by the grace of God to go on and to win.

African champions Nigeria will hope for more glory wearing the new World Cup kits, the Super Eagles assistant coach, Daniel Amokachi, has said.

The Nigeria Football Federation on Thursday unveiled the kits to be worn by the Eagles at Brazil 2014.

The home kit is in two refreshingly different shades of green from the current jersey, while the away kit is white with trimmings of green and red numbering.

“Our prayer is that the successes we have enjoyed so far continue with this new kit,” Amokachi told MTNFootball.com at the public presentation of the World Cup jersey in Abuja on Thursday.

“The jersey reminds us of the playing days of my boss “The Big Boss” in the 80’s.

“It has the shade of green they used back then and a touch of the green we used in Atlanta 96.”

CHAN MVP Ejike Uzoenyi was one of the first Eagles stars to model the new kits on Thursday.

“The jersey is great. It feels light on the skin and it’s top quality,” he praised.

“I like its texture and cannot wait to wear it for action next week.”

The Eagles will launch the jersey in a World Cup warm-up against Mexico on March 5 in United States.

Wolves to decide on Agbim today

Warri Wolves will make a decision on the relevance of their goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim, today after the goaltender returned to the Seasiders at the expiration of his season long loan deal with Enugu Rangers.

The Flying Antelopes, SportingLife recalls, recently declared Agbim to be surplus to requirements at the club after he barely played five matches for the club throughout last season because of his constant invitation to the Eagles’ camp.

The goalkeeper had to return to Warri where he was named captain two seasons ago which later got him the nod to the Eagles’ camp where he was also handed the skipper armband of the home-based Eagles.

The Media Officer of Warri Wolves, Moses Etu told SportingLife that the Seasiders would hold series of meetings today and among issues to be discussed is the relevance of the goalie to Warri Wolves this coming season since he still remains their player.

“Warri Wolves’ management will meet to discuss the fate of Agbim on Friday (today). We don’t know what will become of him after the expiration of his loan deal with Rangers. We have four good goalkeepers presently excluding Agbim but we shall see how it turns out to be,” Etu said.

Etu also commended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for moving the former Golden Eaglets’ boss, Manu Garba to the Flying Eagles for him to be fully integrated with his players from the U17 cadre.

He said the appointment will no doubt assist the national U20 side to win the elusive FIFA U20 World Cup at the next championship next year.

    Agbim salutes Zimbabweans

Chigozie Agbim has congratulated the Warriors of Zimbabwe for the good show they put up against the Eagles which Nigeria won by a goal on Saturday evening in South africa.

“I want to congratulate the Zimbabweans for the good fight they had put up in the match. When we came into the tournament our aim was to win the trophy, but in football, sometimes things don’t come the way you plan it. We still thank God that we are not going home empty-handed and I also want to thank my colleagues for their contributions,’’ Agbim said.

A civil servant, Jeremiah Okah, said the player’s performance gave hope to the Nigerian league which have over the years lacked commanding respect among fans.

“Their performance in this competition has given our league exposure because people will now be interested in Nigerian leagues. People will want to be part of the league that can produce the calibre of the players that represented Nigeria in the competition. So, it is a good one for us in terms of appearance and for our league development’’, he said.

NAN reports that Nigeria made its first appearance at the continental championship which is in its third edition. The tournament, which kicked off on January 11, ended on February 1 with Libya clinching the trophy .
