  • Ashimolowo at Abundant Life ‘Evening of Glory’

    The Abundant Life Gospel Church, Peace Arena at Pen Cinema, Agege, Lagos, will on Friday, September 7, host the popular televangelist, Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo, in a programme titled, ‘An Eveninig of Glory’.

    The host and General Overseer of Abundant Life Gospel Church, Rev. Dr. Jane Onaolapo, said:”The one-day event is coming on the heels of the church’s just concluded flagship programme Superfest 2018 to consolidate the gains of the three-day  international conference.

    “We thank God for the huge success of Superfest 2018 which paraded eminent preachers like Bishop Mike Okonkwo, a regular feature in the decade-long annual conference and hundreds of ministers whose lives and ministries were transformed.

    “Pastor Ashimolowo’s one-day special event continues our global gospel outreach project which is now an all-year around affair. A lot is expected at this event. As in all Pastor Ashimolowo’s outings, we  excpect the manifestation of God’s glory.

    “In this end-time and particularly at this critical period in our political evolution, we need the glory of God in our midst more than ever before. Our desire as born again Christians is that we move from glory to glory.”

    Pastor Ashimolowo, a respected teacher and televangelist is known for his insightful teachings, and he is one of Africa’s most influential preachers based in London whose global ministry is well known around the world.

    Dr. Onaolapo said that the programme would start at 6:00pm prompt and run for a few hours. “A harvest of miracles, signs and wonders is expected at the event because the glory of God shall truly manifest”, she added.

  • Unidentified youth dies moments after taking Indian hemp, tramadol

    An unidentified youth in  Oko Oba, Agege,Lagos,died penultimate Tuesday shortly after taking Indian hemp and tramadol.

    Witnesses said the incident happened at the Abattoir end of Oko Oba.

    It was learnt that the deceased smoked Indian hemp with some of his friends, following which he also took tramadol.

    A source who asked not to be named disclosed that ‘’the deceased then sat down at a corner where he took tramadol.’’

    He was said to have palpitated severally after taking the combined hard drugs leading to his death moments later.

    The source added: ‘’ When he started behaving funny, we thought he was just acting clownishly until he palpitated for some minutes and subsequently became weak.

    ‘’ He later started foaming in his mouth and by the time bystanders rushed to attend to him he had died.’’

    The Nation learnt that his body was evacuated by men of the Abattoir Police Division.

  • Two in court for stealing laptop, phone

    Two men, Michael Ibironke, 21, and Azeez Adedeji, 28, who allegedly burgled a house and stole a laptop and a phone, valued at N253,000 were on Monday docked before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Ibironke, an electrician; and Adedeji, a bet 9ja agent; both residing at No 8, Bode St., Agege, Lagos, are being tried for burglary, conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the offences were committed on July 7 at the same address.

    Eruada said that the accused burgled the room of one Mr Michael Adeleye and carted away a laptop and mobile phone valued at N253, 000.

    “The duo gained access to the room of the complainant through the burglar proof of the window.

    “The duo stole a laptop and a mobile phone kept in the house,’’ Eruada said.

    The prosecutor said that the accused succeeded in stealing the items and were about escaping when they were caught by other neighbours.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 306 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, entered a not guilty plea.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Dan-Oni adjourned the case until Aug.20, for mention.

  • Two adults confirmed dead in train-commercial bus accident

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of two male adults, when a train hit a commercial bus, at Pen Cinema in Agege, Lagos.

    The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr Adesina Tiamiyu in a statement on Friday in Lagos, said that the agency received a distress call at 8.57a.m via the emergency toll free number.

    Tiamiyu said that the call was pertaining to a passenger train that hit a parked commercial bus.

    He said that the accident forced three of the hanging passengers to fell off the moving train.

    ”Unfortunately, two adult male lost their lives and were taken to the mortuary by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU).

    ”One adult sustained injuries and was transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH),” the LASEMA boss said.

    He said that other agencies that responded at the scene of the accident include the Nigeria Police force (Railway Police Division), the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

    Others are the Civil Defence Corps, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), LASG Task force, LASG Fire Service (AGEGE Division), Nigerian Armed Forces (NAF) OPS, MESA and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).

    Tiamiyu urged passengers to abide by the overall safety measures put in place before boarding a train.

    He also urged residents to desist from hanging on a moving train to avoid unnecessary loss of lives in the state.

  • Two dead, one injured as train averts bus collusion (Updated)

    At least two persons have been confirmed dead and one injured after a train averted a collusion with an abandoned commercial bus.

    The incident occurred Friday morning at Pen Cinema, Agege, Lagos Mainland.

    It was gathered that the three victims were sitting atop the train when it veered upon sighting the bus from afar.

    Witnesses said the deceased fell on the rail line and was shredded by the moving train, while the other two fell by the bus, losing some body parts.

    The train was said to have continued its journey, oblivious of the casualties.

    Irked by the incident, hoodlums, it was gathered, set the bus ablaze as onlookers rushed the injured to nearby Orile-Agege General Hospital.
    Confirming the incident, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adesina Tiamiyu, who was at the scene, said the wreckage of the bus had been removed.

    He said: “It is true there was an accident there but untrue that many people died. The bus was empty and packed on the side.

    “The three victims were hanging on top of the train. One of them died, while the other two sustained injuries.

    They were taken to a nearby hospital but we are going there now to see them, assess their condition and relocate them if necessary.

    We have appealed to residents so many times to stop handing on moving objects. Sitting on top of a moving train is dangerous. It is deadly. People should value their lives.”

  • Bread seller bags one year jail term for fake currency

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 27-year-old bread seller, Ifeanyi Osuohae, to one year in prison for possession of fake currency.

    The convict, who lives at No. 1, Lateef St., Orile-Agege in Lagos, was arraigned and tried for possessing fake currency.

    The magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, who gave the verdict, said the convict was found guilty of the charge.

    Fashola, however, gave the convict an option to pay N50, 000 as fine.

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Mike Unah, told the court that the accused had in his possession, N2, 000 counterfeit notes.

    He said that the accused committed the offence on June 11 about 1.30 a.m. at Akerele Street, Agege, a Lagos suburb.

    He told the court that the accused boarded a taxi and paid his fare with a fake N1,000 note and he was given N700 change.

    “The driver checked the fake N1,000 note and found out that it did not have CBN governor’s signature.

    “The accused started arguing with the driver and in the process, the driver quickly drove to the nearest police check point and alerted them.

    “The police found another fake N1,000 note on the accused after a thorough search,” he said.

    He told the court that the offence contravened Section 372 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

  • OPC man jailed 25 years for killing trader

    A Lagos High Court in Igbosere Thursday sentenced Jelili Falana an ‘Assistant Vigilante’ in the O’odua People’s Congress (OPC) office at Agege, Lagos, to 25 years imprisonment for manslaughter.

    Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya convicted Falana of the 20l4 shooting to death of a herbal medicine hawker, Afolashade Adedoyin Salami.

    The court found that the convict shot Salami and dumped her corpse in a disused soak away.

    The sentence followed Falana’s second re-arraignment on December 7, 2016 on a one-count amended charge of murder contrary to Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The convict was previously arraigned by the Lagos State Government on January 11, 2016 and re-arraigned on an amended charge on February 1, 2016.

    He pleaded not guilty on the three occasions following which trial commenced.

    But in her judgment, Justice Ogunsanya held that the facts of the case were more consistent with manslaughter than murder.

    The sentence, which was without an option of a fine, takes effect from 2016.

    According to prosecution counsel Adebayo Haroun and Adeyemi Bamgbose, Falana committed the offence on or about June 15, 2014 at about 10:30pm at an OPC Vigilance Office 1n Agege.

    The case was reported to the Railway Police Division, Agege, by the OPC Coordinator or Chairman in the area, Mr. Adekunle Adegoke.

    In the convict’s statement to the police, which was admitted in evidence, Falana said he knew the deceased as a “local nurse’ and drug hawker who placed him on malaria medication on the morning of the incident.

    Falana said the deceased was on her way home but stopped at the OPC office to check on him at about 10pm.

    As she sat beside him he began fondling his single-barreled gun, but it went off and shot her in the head, following which she died.

    He became confused and afraid so he dumped her body and the gun in the soak away.

    The office and the soak away was divided by the rail track along Old Abeokuta Road, Agege.

    A prosecution witness, Inspector Gloria Anumo, testified that during interrogation Falana stated that he seized the gun from hoodlums and was using it for vigilance work, but that he neither had a license for nor knew how to operate it.

     

  • Illegal structure owners in Agege get quit notice

    Lagos States Government yesterday served a seven-day notice on owners/occupiers of illegal structures and containerised shops around Abattoir and Oko-Oba in Agege to remove them forthwith.

    Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said over 2500 illegal structures including containerised shops were served ‘removal order’ within abattoir and Fagba by railway side, Agege.

    The shanties, he said, were occupied by miscreants and hoodlums who terrorise people.

    He said: “It is an eye-sore with miscreants and hoodlums freely smoking and selling Indian hemp including prostitution by underage boys and girls around the area”

    Oko-Oba railway line including Estate, he said, could no longer sleep with their eyes closed because of the miscreants.

     

  • Lawmaker donates buildings to constituency

    A member of the House of Representatives Hon. Taofeek Adaranijo has advised his colleagues to support the Lagos State government in making life better for the residents.

    He spoke during the inauguration of blocks of classrooms named after some traditional rulers at Moses Orimolade Primary School, Orile Agege and Anwarul Islam Primary, Oniwaya, Dopemu, Lagos.

    He said the projects serve as complement to the huge investment of the Lagos State government in the education sector and other developmental projects.

    He added it would provide the right atmosphere that is conducive enough for teaching and learning, noting that it was the responsibility of government to ensure that children receive quality education.

    Adaranijo also said he sponsored motions to curb the casualisation of labour, stressing that Nigerians were entitled to better condition of service in any employment they found themselves.

    He said: “I have facilitated a motion on the deplorable condition of the Lagos-Abule Egba Bridge construction through House of Representatives loan approved for Lagos State government.

    “I financed computer training and empowerment for some of our youths in Agege. My office, in collaboration with National Directorate of Employment (NDE) trained over 100 youths.

    “We have trained some people in barbing, GSM repairs, confectionaries, make up, bead making and event management. In addition, we sank six boreholes and carried out other constituency projects,” he said.

    Contributing, the Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa urged lawmakers to contribute their quota to the development of Lagos State through projects execution.

    He added that the effort of federal lawmaker would go a long way to boost education in the state, stressing that those who had the buildings named after them should help in maintaining them to keep their legacy.

    He said: “Being in the House is not just about lawmaking. You should be able to do beyond that just like Adaranijo had done through physical projects.

  • Lagos State: Lawmaker hands over classroom blocks to schools

    Rep. Taofeek Adaranijo, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Agege Federal Constituency, Lagos State, on Monday presented two blocks of three classrooms to primary schools in the constituency.

    Adaranijo, a former Chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, said during the inauguration, that the classrooms were part of his 2016 and 2017 constituency projects for the development of education.

    The News men report that the lawmaker inaugurated a block of three classrooms at Moses Orimolade Primary Schools, Orile Agege, which he named after Oba Hakeem Agbedeyi, the Alaige of Orile-Agege.

    He also inaugurated another block of three classrooms at Anwar-ul-Islam Primary School, Dopemu, Agege, which he named after Oba Kamila Isiba, the Olu of Agege Kingdom.

    Adaranijo also gave school furniture, boards, electric fans, among others, to the schools.

    He said that the projects were part of his promises during the 2015 electioneering campaign; to make laws and motions for the benefits of Nigerians.

    The lawmaker said that he was committed to representing his constituents and bringing problem-solving and people-oriented programmes and projects to the constituency.

    According to him, my commitment to education necessitates the construction of the classrooms as part of the means of giving back to public schools.

    “These projects serve as complement to the huge investments of Lagos State Government in the education sector.

    “Projects such as these will afford our children the opportunity to continue learning in conducive classrooms for proper assimilation of studies.

    “It will also reduce the number of pupils in classrooms for better and efficient performance,’’ Adaranijo said.

    The Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, commended the lawmaker for his contributions to the education sector.

    “I want to congratulate our representative. I commend your effort and achievements so far.

    “It shows that you are not fighting for your purse and selfish interest.

    “The essence of legislature is not about law making alone; it is just part of it. The major task is representation, representing people’s interest in parliament.

    “We all must play prominent role to develop our education and our children.

    “It is only when we educate our children that we can have a rest of mind. All of us must contribute to the growth of education. Education first in everything we do,” he said.

    Obasa noted that teaching indigenous language was key to development, adding that stakeholders should encourage teaching of the language.

    He urged other council chairmen to prioritise education in their programmes and policies.

    Dr Ganiyu Sopeyin, the Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, who appreciated the lawmaker for the gesture, said that government alone could not bear the burden of education.

    Sopeyin said that the projects were testimonies of the passion of Adaranijo in repositioning the education sector.

    He urged the beneficiaries to ensure judicious use of the classrooms for effective teaching and learning.

    In his remarks, Mr Olaekan Majiyagbe, the Education Secretary in Agege Local Government, said that the projects would impact positively on the schools and the community.
