    AGN withdraws from Nollywood federation

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has detached itself from the Federation of Registered Nollywood Guilds and Associations (FRENGAN).

AGN National President Emeka Rollas made the announcement in a letter addressed to the FREGAN leadership on Monday.

“After a careful consideration of opinions and suggestions expressed by our members and stakeholders on AGN’s membership of FREGAN, the National Executive Council has regrettably resolved to withdraw AGN’s membership from the body.

“This is to enable the Executive Council to focus on the growth, development, and welfare of members as we presently operate as service contractors, meaning that we fall short of labour protection with no access to social security.

“Since filmmaking is a collaborative effort, we shall continue to support and promote sound and articulate industrial relationships among all the guilds and associations,” the letter stated.

FRENGAN is the umbrella body of all registered guilds in Nigeria’s film industry.

Leaked s3x tape: AGN should ban Moyo Lawal from acting, says Uche Maduagwu

Actor, Uche Maduagwu has called for the immediate acting ban of his colleague, Moyo Lawal over her leaked sex tape.

Lawal suddenly became a trending topic on several social media platforms on Saturday, September 9, following the leak of her sex clip.

A debate was ultimately ignited among the online community on the person and motive behind the leaked video.

Several opinions were communicated on the matter with many claiming the actress was behind the leak, some basically sent out words of encouragement and others rated Lawal’s bedroom prowess, scoring her low.

As the debate on the leaked video continues online, Maduagwu in a video called on the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) to ensure that Lawal isn’t allowed on any movie scene pending the completion of police investigation in fishing out the person(s) responsible for sex tape leakage.

He said: “This is disgraceful. Is this what Nollywood has turned into? I’m calling on the AGN president to ensure that Moyo cannot act until the police investigate this video.

“This is wrong, unacceptable! She must come out and explain to us how that video got leaked. It is wrong. What do you people want to turn Nollywood into? This is unacceptable. This is disgraceful. What are you teaching our children? God!!! When I watched that video, I started crying. It is just unacceptable.”

Captioning the post, the concerned actor wrote: “Dear MOYO, Abeg what MORAL lesson is this video teaching our PIKINS NI TORI OLORUN? To say this is EMBARRASSING Na an understatement.

“WETIN you Na WAN finally turn this #Nollywood industry to?

“I urge the #AGN (Actors Guild of Nigeria) to immediately not allow MOYO enter any #Movie set until the #Nigerian Police look into who shared that #video on the internet.

“I could not even #watch the video because it made me VOMIT, so uninteresting and REPULSIVE, how did we get here in Nollywood?”

  • AGN unveils insurance policy

As a way of facing the realities of life, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), led by Emeka Ejezie Rollas, has decided to initiate an insurance product for actors.

The AGN general insurance product which is supported by Universal Insurance Plc was introduced at a ceremony on April 20 at Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Ikeja, Lagos. The event also witnessed the unveiling of the new AGN logo, showcasing of the new identification card, unveiling of the new AGN mobile App with payment gateway/website and its interactivity.

Present at the event were chairmen of the guild state chapters, representative of DSTV, Mr. Ben Chiadika as well as top actors such as Prince Ifeanyi Dike, Benedict Johnson, Chief Remi Ohanjianya, Gloria Mba, Tarri West, among many others.

Welcoming guests to the event, Rollas said: “Following the August 2017 Peace and Reconciliation Conference in Enugu and the consequent national appointment of Government of National Unity in which I emerged the National President. My national executive and I have sought to build on the strengths of our guild, work hard on delimiting those weaknesses that threaten cohesion and development of our trade and guild.”

He pointed out that the AGN which has a membership of 150,000 practitioners in 32 States including the FCT is an affiliate of Federation of International Actors (FIA) the largest association of professional interest in the Nigerian culture sector.

“It is a noble idea to partner with AGN for this laudable initiative.” MD/CEO of Universal Insurance Plc, Mr. Ben Ujoatuonu, said in his remark.

“We gave our commitment to make sure the idea is actualised. The scheme is in three folds-expenses for injuries, risk of disability and death. Actors cannot continue to beg when they have ailment. We are here to ensure that it stops and that is why we are in this project. We encourage everyone to support Rollas to ensure that the project is sustained.”

  • AGN and matters arising

THE Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has been enmeshed in leadership crisis, and this has existed for as long as the birth of the association itself. Suffice to say that the current development, a court injunction restricting Ibinabo Fiberesima from carrying on as AGN President, after almost three quarter of a two-term of four-year tenure, is a mere scene within a fertile storyline scripted as a never-ending serial.

Let’s take a look at this statement by Justice Tsoho in respect of the case: “It is not in doubt that the parties in this suit are entertainers but the business of court is a serious one and it cannot be turned into a legal play and for this reason, the election is hereby declared null and void.”

I have often heard of the phrase, ‘Better late than never’, but this judgment, to me, is not only late, but makes a huge fun of our judicial process. Unfortunately too, the process has again played into the hands of entertainers, whose part training, is to amuse. Incidentally, this is coming at a time in the political history of Nigeria, where so many dramas rent the air. I dare say that events have overtaken the freshness of this case, one which preceded the start of Ibinabo’s election in 2012.

I think that these entertainers, in their honest obedience of Justice Tsoho’s ruling might not really turn this into a ‘legal play’ but may just explore some ‘legal politics’ with the matter. What do I mean?

A court judgment delivered on October 26, 2011, had ordered that status quo be maintained by the then Segun Arinze-led exco and another faction of AGN led by Emeka Ike, which had the support of Kanayo O. Kanayo. However, in the face of that violation by the Segun Arinze administration, not only did his tenure hold sway as the faction to reckon with, they exhausted their term in office and organised the next election that produced IbinaboFiberesima.

With such popularity and recognition that Ibinabo has received, considering her romance with Aso Villa, which has helped  most ailing members, enhanced the fortunes of others and garnered some goodwill for the guild, telling her to back off now would sound like a joke to her supporters who, I believe, constitute the majority of AGN members.

Let it be clear that the suit that brought about this judgment was the one filed, not by Emeka Ike, but one St. MaradonaMikevine, who was the national treasurer in the then factional election that produced Emeka Ike as AGN President.

Ike, in an earlier suit had challenged the formation of agovernment of ‘National Unity’, which brought Ibinabo to power. He had also sought an order of court reviewing the guild’s 2007 Constitution as it relates to the tenure of members of Board of Trustees (BOT), averring that the board, comprising: Mr Segun Arinze, Prince Ifeanyi Dike, Mr Emmanuel Oguguah, Mr Murphy Stephen, Mr Sunny McDon and Mr OkeyMcAnthony, had remained in office since July 13, 1999 when the guild was incorporated.

I think that the relative peace that has existed within the guild should be maintained, while efforts are made by the leadership of the guild and warring parties to settle out of court. Apart from the provision in AGN’s constitution that does not support vacuum, it will take some more time to get a replacement for Ibinabo. And if the prayer by Ike that the guild’s 2007 Constitution be reviewed is granted, the process is expected to lead to a new resolution on the reformation of its BOT, new electoral procedures, and indeed, preparations for fresh elections.

On the other hand, if Ibinabo decides to appeal the new judgment, which is likely to span another three years, by which time she would have completed her second term, the race becomes that of her successor to carry on. How long will this trend continue?

However, considering that the AGN constitution says there should be no vacuum, Ibinabo’s loyalists have said she remains their national leader. In other words, they could decide to have her drop President, pending the appeal in court, while she continues her tenure under a nomenclature like AGN National Leader.

In this game or drama or politics, I imagine the form which the appeal case would take and I see a situation whereby in retrospect, Segun Arinze could claim to have maintained status quo by not acting in the capacity of AGN President towards the tail end of his tenure, but as President of the National Unity of AGN, with the authorities of the BOT, thereby pleading the ‘sanctity’ of Ibinabo’s election as one borne out of the incontrovertible powers of the BOT rather than the controversial position of Segun Arinze, as AGN President.

The matter is so complicated and I think members should read between the lines and embrace peace, because maintaining status quo could also mean going back to the regime of Ejike Asiegbu, who handed over to Segun Arinze. After all, the law, they say, is an ass.

  • AGN crises: Court nullifies Ibinabo-led exco

AGN crises: Court nullifies Ibinabo-led exco

A palpable undulation has hit the seeming calm in the leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), when a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Monday, nullified the election which declared Ibinabo Fiberesima president of the association in 2012.

Justice James Tsoho said the election that ushered the actress into office was conducted against a standing court order, in a suit filed by St. Maradona Mikevine, who was National Treasurer in the factional exco led by another actor, Emeka Ike.

Mikevine, through his lawyer, Malcom Omirhobo, prayed the court to stay action on the election that brought Ibinabo into office, claiming it was conducted in the face of a subsisting court order, restraining the conduct of AGN election.

But the Segun Arinze-led faction, which produced Fiberisima, went ahead with the election.

Justice Tsoho ruled that the Incorporated Trustees of AGN acted with utter impunity in disobeying the court’s order.

“It is not in doubt that the parties in this suit are entertainers but the business of court is a serious one and it cannot be turned into a legal play and for this reason, the election is hereby declared null and void,” the judge held.

Justice Tsoho further ordered Ibinabo to henceforth stop parading herself as the AGN president.

Besides, Justice Tsoho ordered Ibinabo and all the national officers of her executive to render full accounts of monies generated by the AGN under her, including details of income and expenditure.

The judge specifically ordered that a comprehensive audit of AGN’s accounts be conducted within 90 days.

Although Ibinabo had said the plaintiff lacked the locus standi to file the suit, as he did not contest against her, Ike and a few others had also sued against the leadership of the AGN in separate cases.

Ike had challenged the formation of an illegal government known as “National Unity”, to run AGN’s affairs.

The actor had sought an order of court reviewing the guild’s 2007 Constitution as it relates to the tenure of members of board of trustees.

He averred that the board, comprising: Mr Segun Arinze, Prince Ifeanyi Dike, Mr Emmanuel Oguguah, Mr Murphy Stephen, Mr Sunny McDon and Mr Okey McAnthony, had remained in office since July 13, 1999 when the guild was incorporated.

He had therefore, sought for an order setting aside the appointment of Arinze as President of the guild, as well as an order reviewing the provisions of the guild’s constitution.

Arinze, who was appointed as President of the National Unity of AGN, handed over to Ibinabo after the conduct of the disputed election.

In a telephone chat with The Nation, Ike noted that the judgement is an “indication that the judicial system in Nigeria is the last line of defence for the common man.”

He said the judicial system is the best way to seek redress on issues, especially in this era of politicking.

“In the coming days, we will be addressing a conference of state chairmen and the youths. It will be massive. I am called the people’s president and I intend to take governance to the people. We don’t get to see our leaders until they want to visit political office holders – all that is about to change. The grassroots should form the basis of good governance and that is what we are all about,” he said.

Reacting to the judgement, the National Executive Council of AGN released a statement, in which it expressed solidarity to Ibinabo, insisting she remains their national leader.

“While we shall abide by the judgement of the High Court, we shall be guided by the Constitution of the Guild which stipulates that there shall be no vacuum in the leadership of the Guild.

“In view of this, Ibinabo Fiberesima remains the National leader of the AGN as the court did not declare Emeka Ike President of the guild,” adding that “the Registered Board of Trustees has gone to the Appeal Court to challenge the judgement.”

The statement portends that the “…judgement has not in any ways affected the resolve of Chief Ibinabo to take the Guild to the next level,” while conveying Ibinabo’s wish that members, supporters and fans should remain calm and peaceful as AGN remains one family.

Ibinabo was returned for a second term in office in October, last year.

    AGN releases Muna’s funeral plans

The Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), through its National President, Ibinabo Fiberesima-Egbuka, has released the burial arrangement for late Nollywood actor, Muna Obiekwe, who died on Sunday, January 18.

According to information made available to the press, the funeral rites will kick-off on Sunday, February 1, with a candlelight procession that will start at Masha Roundabout, Surulere, Lagos.

The procession is expected to terminate at the popular O’Jez Restaurant, National Stadium. According to Ibinabo, the dress code for the procession; white T-shirt, will be provided at the venue.

Late Mr. Obiekwe will be buried on Tuesday, February 3, at Umudioka, Anambra State. And every part that AGN will play during the burial will be anchored by Ibinabo Fiberesima-Egbuka, the guild revealed.

The actor, whose demise shocked the entertainment world, was said to have died of kidney failure. According to a source close to the actor, Muna has been battling a renal-related ailment, but kept it secret for a long time.

  • I hate being typecast, says Segun Arinze

I hate being typecast, says Segun Arinze

Though many of his fans have been wondering why he seldom appears in movie in recent times, Segun Arinze, a veteran Nollywood actor and ex-president of Actors Guild of Nigeria ( AGN), has, however, said it is not a deliberate attempt to bid bye to his first love: acting.

In an interview with The Nation, the talented thespian and famed voiceover said he needed time to attend to some administrative matters.

With a career spanning over two decades, Arinze, popularly called Black Arrow, further described himself as more of a method actor than any other thing.

“You may see me play different bad roles, but go back and check and you will find that I don’t play them the same way. I also don’t think that I am typecast. I have done a lot of movies that I didn’t have to play the bad boy role. I don’t believe in being typecast; I would rather be a method actor. Granted, there are certain roles one might not be suited for, but that doesn’t mean one can’t be an actor. I am an actor and I also play an actor’s actor,” he said.

The respected actor also recounted his most challenging moment on the set of the yet-to-be-released movie, A Place in the Stars, saying, “I don’t think that is what I want to share because I was a big distraction at a point in time. It wasn’t a nice experience at all. My director, Steve Gukas, called every now and then to say I was distracting others. The director is also a slave driver of sorts. We find ourselves doing almost 10 takes for one scene, but he knew what he wanted. He wasn’t the pushy kind of director. He took time out to explain to you.”

According to the organisers, she was picked for her leadership qualities and tireless efforts in the making of African films and entertainment.

  • Ibinabo Fiberesima’s lamentation song

    Ibinabo Fiberesima’s lamentation song

AT the Nigerian Entertainment Industry Health Insurance Convention held on Tuesday at the Grand Ball Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos,  Ibinabo Fiberesima, president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), shocked the gathering when she opened up on her hitherto pent-up anger.

To the chagrin of her listeners, she said: “I’m glad this convention is organised by the press themselves and a lot of you are here today. And I’m here too because I believe in the dream of NEIH and have done so much myself in that regard. But it pains me that every time I open the newspapers, all I see are negative stories about me. Somebody says something negative about me and it goes viral, courtesy of the press. And when we are talking about a serious thing as this, nobody writes about it. It is sad. I’m tired of reading negative stories about me; that’s the truth.”

Ibinabo revealed that she had, in the last two years, worked with Healthcare International  to provide health insurance for it members. “And today, being a member of Actors Guild of Nigeria is more or less simultaneous to being an HMO holder,” she added.

She also commended the efforts of the organisers for coming up with the idea and urged all to avail themselves of the opportunity of insuring their health against future occurrence.

From what appeared to be a lamentation song of sorts, it is obvious that, like the popular saying, “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”.  Even before she was elected president of the Guild, she had been enmeshed in one controversy or the other.

It will be recalled that the ex-beauty queen was once involved in a case of manslaughter, which dragged for some time before she was literally left off the hook.

Besides, her relationship with actor Fred Amata, which produced a child, was also another issue the actress had to grapple with.

Interestingly, in-between managing to keep a low profile, she emerged AGN president two years ago. Surprisingly, her name has since been resonating every now and then mostly over negative reports about her person.

Therefore, when it was her turn to speak on the occasion, she literally erupted, warning her traducers not to destroy the reputation she had laboured to build over the years.
