PDP: Makarfi warns against dragging party to court

Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has warned PDP members against dragging the party to court.

Makarfi, who gave the warning on Wednesday in Abuja, while inaugurating caretaker committees for Adamawa and Osun States chapters of the party, declared that members with grievances must exhaust internal mechanisms.

“It is unfortunate that some people still think that going to court is the best way out, even after the Supreme Court’s judgement on the party’s leadership tussle.

“The party will take a very hard stand on any member who is in a hurry to go to court without exhausting the avenues available in the party for grievances to be heard and be addressed accordingly.

“We cannot deny people their fundamental human rights, but the party constitution says that members must exhaust the internal mechanism before seeking external solutions.

“If you are quick in seeking external solutions, the party will not take it kindly,” Makarfi warned.

He commended PDP members, especially where caretaker committees were inaugurated, for their “give and take” posture and sacrifice, and assured party faithfuls that their interests would be accommodated at various levels.

Makarfi advised the newly inaugurated caretaker committees members to carry everybody along, pointing out that PDP was one family.

“At this stage, it is not one side versus the other side.

“The only side that is against us is anybody that takes us to court; it is that person or group that is clearly against us,” he said.

Makarfi, in an interview with newsmen after the inauguration ceremony, decried the politicisation of reports that Nigeria was out of recession.

“The issue should not be politicised; getting out of recession is when people feel secured and can feed and find jobs.

“We can only say we are out of recession when there is adequate infrastructure and students do not find it difficult to pay tuition fees.

“The reality is that, all these complaints are still there. Life is still tough for the poor man. So why should we be  clapping and claiming that we are out of recession?

“It is not time to clap. We have nothing to clap for. We have a lot to do. That is what PDP intends to correct when we come to power.

“What we are doing now is to partner with those in power to make sure that the conditions of every Nigerian, especially the ordinary person, is better. We won’t politicise that.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quotes the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) second quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) report as indicating that the country was out of recession.

On the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Makarfi called on both parties to make peace and specifically advised the Federal Government to do the needful.

Similarly, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, in a statement, said that the figures of growth rate released by NBS, when compared with inflation rate and population growth, showed that there was nothing to celebrate.

“The report indicated that while the inflation rate was 16.05 per cent, the annual population growth rate was approximately 2.67 per cent per year.

“With such statistics, it is impossible to escape the conclusion that the recovery of the Nigerian economy is weak, feeble and insufficient to herald the sort of celebration we want to indulge in,” he said.

Adeyeye reiterated that the nation was at risk of falling into a more protracted recession if strong and bold monetary and fiscal policies were not activated immediately, to sustain the exit from recession.

He added that there was nothing to celebrate until such economic growth improves the harsh living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.

Makarfi cautions Kashamu, others on frivolous court cases

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, has warned members against instituting frivolous court cases on the party’s decisions.

He singled out Ogun State as the only chapter that is going through crisis and accused the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Buruji Kashamu, of fueling the crisis.

“We have constituted caretaker committees in seven states and all of them are working well. The crisis in only in Ogun chapter and it seems he (Kashamu) is the one fueling it,” Makarfi said.

Describing the trend as shameful, the party chairman said such actions would attract severe sanctions and urged members to toe the line of honour by abiding by the ruling of the Supreme Court that affirmed the present leadership of the PDP.

Speaking at the Abuja PDP secretariat while inaugurating the party’s caretaker committees for Osun and Adamawa States, Makarfi urged members to desist from taking the party to court at the slightest opportunity.

He said: “It is very unfortunate that some members are still rushing to court over party matters without following due process. This must stop forthwith, members should embrace ‎peace, we are all members of the party and the interests of all party members will be protected

“From now on, going to court on party matters will be seriously resisted by the leadership. You must look inward for peaceful resolution of your grievances as contained in the party’s constitution.

“Anybody caught doing this or fueling unnecessary crisis in the party will be severely dealt with in line with the constitution of the party.

“Nobody is saying that you should not exercise your fundamental human rights, but in doing so, you should respect the constitution of the party

“Henceforth, we will come hard on those members in line with our party’s constitution. Those concerned should retrace their steps because a tree cannot make a forest.

Mr. Ishola Sarafadeen was appointed the caretaker committee chairman for Osun, while Alhaji Mohamned Imam emerged as caretaker committee chairman for the Adamawa chapter.

    Ladoja returns to PDP

Former Oyo governor Rasheed Ladoja, who defected to the Accord Party to contest the state’s governorship seat in the 2015 general elections, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ladoja, along with Mr Seyi Makinde, a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state, moved to the PDP on Thursday in Ibadan, when Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, visited the Oyo capital.

The former governor, who won the seat on the ticket of the PDP in 2011, said that he was returning to his home, adding that it was not his wish to leave the PDP when he did.

“When I left the PDP some years ago, it was because of the injustice done to me.

“We left because the PDP leaders, at that time, were not ready to protect the interest of all members. We are back now because the new leadership has promised to right all wrongs and avoid mistakes of the past.

“I have discussed with members of the Accord party and they have asked for amnesty; we need assurance from Makarfi that Accord Party members will be given equal treatment and a level playing ground,” Ladoja stated

In his response, Makarfi said that he came to Ladoja “to take you back to where you belong”.

“We want you to return to your great beginning; we want to start all over again as one family,” he said.

Makarfi expressed optimism that Ladoja’s presence would add value to the PDP in Oyo State, adding that he (Ladoja) had committed no crime to warrant a plea for amnesty.

He implored PDP members to forget the past and work toward party unity, and assured Ladoja and new PDP members of equal opportunity for all.

Makinde, in his remark, assured Makarfi of his group’s total support to the ideals of the PDP, urging him to protect the interest of his members.

Two PDP chieftains, Chief Richard Akinjide and Chief Yekini Adeojo, who spoke at the occasion, commended Makarfi over his efforts to reconcile warring factions and “especially for wooing new members into the fold”.

Akinjide particularly promised to assist Makarfi toward rebuilding the PDP, and urged him to carry all members along, so as to create a sense of oneness.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that hundreds of Accord party, SDP, and PDP supporters received Makarfi who also visited Chief Christopher Alao-Akala, another former Oyo governor being wooed by Makarfi.

PDP raises caretaker committees for Ogun, Borno, Kebbi

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday raised caretaker committees to run the affairs of the party in Ogun, Borno and Kebbi States.

Alhaji Abdulahi Wali was announced as chairman for Kebbi, while Abdulmalik Mahmud heads the committee for Borno.

Mr. Tunde Odanye will lead the Ogun State chapter of the party.

Inaugurating the committees on Wednesday, the Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, assured members and defectors of equal rights in the party.

He said the reconciliation window would remain open to aggrieved members at all times.

The three states were among the eight chapters whose executive committees were dissolved at the party’s August 12 convention.

Makarfi, who said time constraint informed the decision to set up the caretaker committees, added that the party had recorded success in setting up caretaker committees in some of the affected states.

He said: “We don’t have luxury of time. We won’t allow circumstances to hold us back. We called both sides. You can’t force everybody to come. We thank all those that came.

“Those who genuinely repent and give in to the party will be given equal chance in the party. As we move, we remain flexible and accommodating.

“We have not closed the door of reconciliation and we will never close the door. We will create level playing field for everybody.”

He attributed the dissolution of the affected state executives to divisions and unwholesome practices by some groups and individuals within the states.

  • Ekiti 2018: Nothing will make me defect to PDP, says Ex-Gov. Oni

Ekiti 2018: Nothing will make me defect to PDP, says Ex-Gov. Oni

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Chairman (South), Mr Olusegun Oni, has denied holding secret meetings with leaders of the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to achieve his 2018 gubernatorial ambition in Ekiti.

Oni, also a former governor of Ekiti, said his while addressing a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday.

He said that he had never had a one-on-one with the PDP National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi in his life.

He also denied holding any secret meetings with Gov. Ayodele Fayose at any  hotel in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oni was reacting to rumours that he was holding secret meetings to discuss the possibility of crossing over to the PDP to realise his 2018 gubernatorial ambition.

Oni had recently declared his intention to contest the next gubernatorial seat in the state, as the tenure of the current administration will end in October, 2018, while the election is expected to hold by mid 2018.

He decried what he called “attacks from within” by those allegedly uncomfortable with his ambition to vie for the governorship seat next year.

He alleged that some people had been assigned  to pull him down by all means, saying the alleged attacks were  only making him to become  more popular.

Oni, who said he was not desperate to become governor again, stressed that the fates all of all aspirants jostling for the party’s ticket would be decided by delegates at the party’s primary.

The APC deputy national chairman, South, also denied holding any meeting with the PDP National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi in Ifaki Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area.

The former governor urged his supporters and the people of the state not to believe the rumour and hate  campaign being mounted against him by people he described as “faceless individuals” on the social media.

He said that such rumours would not distract him, but make him to be more focused on selling his ideas on how he intended to make Ekiti better to the electorate

“Some individuals have written a petition against me to the party’s national secretariat demanding that I step down immediately as Deputy National Chairman (South).

“But, it is like these individuals have forgotten that the party’s constitution allows me to remain in that post until one month before the primaries.

“The attacks are from within the party and most of them are coming from the social media, but I am not bothered at all because whatever that will be good will be rough initially.

“I am very much aware that some people have been given the assignment to pull me down, but I put my trust in God and at the end, good will triumph over the evil.

“I want to say categorically that I will not be discouraged.

“Anybody who does not want Oni will either contest against him or support any aspirant. I am not desperate to be governor, and I will leave (my post) when the (party) constitution says I should leave.

“By saying that I met Fayose in a hotel in Lagos and Makarfi in my house in Ifaki-Ekiti, these people are over rating me and I feel honoured.

“The last one-on-one I had with Gov.Fayose was a day after Gen. Adebayo was buried when I brought the invitation from the Borisade family to officially notify him of his demise and to also congratulate him on the honour done Baba Adebayo.

“I have never had a one-on-one with Makarfi and if they are saying he was in my home, I feel honoured.

“Those saying this have nothing to sell, but I have told my people not to abuse or attack anybody; if they have the product that is sellable, they should continue to sell it,” he said.

Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, the National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says the party will continue to pray for the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari.

At the party’s non-elective convention held on Saturday in Abuja, Makarfi said it was the desire of the party that Buhari should be well soon.

“We mean well for our president. We will continue to pray for him, we want him to be fit but that does not mean that we will go to sleep. We will work hard to win the 2019 elections,’’ he said.

He described the non-elective convention of the party as an affirmation that the PDP was a government in waiting.

Makarfi commended the security agencies for ensuring that the convention was conducted in a secured environment.

He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for being unbiased and for demonstrating its independency.

In his remark, Sen. Ben Obi, the Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, said all hands must be on deck to reposition the party to rescue Nigeria.

Also, Mrs Iyabo Apampa, PDP stalwart from Ogun, expressed joy that PDP came back to life in spite several efforts to destabilise the party.(NAN)

There were five attempts to stop PDP convention – Makarfi

The Chairman of National Caretaker Committee, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said there were five failed attempts to stop Saturday’s non-elective national convention of the party.

Makarfi disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the 75th National Executive Committee meeting of the PDP held on Friday at the party national Secretariat in Abuja.

He said the purpose of the meeting was to enable the NEC members review events across the country.

Makarfi said: “At least there were four or five attempts to this convention through the court but as God will have it we overcame all those attempts.

“Some people never give up. We must not think that we are out of the woods. People will continue with legal minds in our paths.

“We are going to overcome that with our resilience and to do the needful.”

The Governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose, pledged the party’s governors’ commitment and submission to PDP decisions.

He urged all NEC members to embrace the spirit of new beginning for the party to make Saturday’s convention a success.

The Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees (BOT), Sen. Wali Jubrin, assured that the board would not allow the party to die.

  • Obasanjo’s third term plot was real – Fayose

Obasanjo’s third term plot was real – Fayose

Ex- President knew about Yar’Adua’s ill-health before 2007 poll

How Obasanjo knelt down for Gaddafi

The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, said the aborted third term agenda of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo was real.

He said the principal officers of the National Assembly got N100 million each in 2006, while the rest of the lawmakers were paid N50 million per head.

He alleged that the former President knelt down for the late Libyan leader, Mouamar Gaddafi, to seek his backing for third term.

He also said Obasanjo knew about the ill-health of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua before he was elected as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007.

The governor made the startling revelations in the July 18, 2017 edition of THE INTERVIEW, a magazine published by a former Editor of THE PUNCH, Mr. Azubuike Ishiekwene.

Fayose said: “Yes it is true. The people I am going to mention here, two of the key players are now dead. That position of Presidential Selection Committee that I headed was set up by all PDP governors. Initially, they wanted Dr. Olusegun Agagu. Then, the majority insisted that they wanted Fayose. So, since the majority wanted me, Baba (Olusegun Obasanjo) invited me to Ota and encouraged me to go ahead. I remember the committee was made up of Governors Danjuma Goje, Ahmed Makarfi, Bukola Saraki, James lbori, me and one other person who I cannot remember now. I want to tell you that, at some point, the majority of the committee was more disposed to having Makarfi as the presidential nominee. l and one other person were the only dissenters

“So, as a loyal Obasanjo boy then, I went to Obasanjo then and told that this committee that was set up, everybody seemed to prefer Makarfi except me and one other person and we were in the minority.

“Five out of seven governors wanted Makarfi. Then Obasanjo pointedly told me that Markafi was too smart and would not be easily controlled by him and, therefore, I must ensure that Makarfi did not emerge the presidential candidate. He mandated me to be briefing him often about the way things were going.

“He confided in me that whether it was Makarfi or anybody that he was not prepared to leave. At that time, the third term agenda had begun to unfold in Abuja. I can tell you that l was co-opted into the secret committee that was behind it. In that body, we had had this senator from Plateau, Ibrahim Mantu, Senator Andy Uba and many others. We were the key players. Let me tell you the truth: at that time, I did not have a choice. l was just a young man without experience.

“The Senate meeting started at about 11:00 a.m. in the morning and by 1:00 p.m. each senator was asked to stand up and say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ before live television coverage whether they supported third term or not, and the majority had their way. So Obasanjo’s dream of third term was shut down. Thereafter, he called a national meeting of PDP, termed reconciliation meeting and denied that he asked or worked for third term.

“Meanwhile, before that time, N50 million was given to every federal lawmaker to support third term. The majority collected the money and still voted against third term. Principal officers got N100 million each. Where did that huge sum of money came from?”

Fayose opened up on the politics behind the choice of the late President Yar’Adua as a presidential candidate of PDP.

He said the current Chairman of the PDP, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi was sidelined in favour of Yar’Adua.

He added: “Let me now come to the Yar’Adua issue. Obasanjo now called me and said, ‘Now that third term has failed, you should go ahead with the PDP committee. And in order for me to check those rooting for Markafi, I should go and sound Yar’Adua out on the ticket. He told me, ‘Don’t tell him I asked you to come. You psyche him up’. So, l met Yar’Adua in his lodge in Katsina. I met Yar’Adua in the company of Yakubu Tanimu (who became his influential chief economic adviser) and his police orderly.

“I remember that while our interaction lasted, the orderly knelt down close to Yar’Adua. I acted as directed by Obasanjo, but the man told me expressly that he was not well enough to aspire to be Nigerian president; that the job would be too rigorous for him.

“After much persuasion, he then told me the only condition under which he might consider running was if all stakeholders would sign up and reach an agreement to pick him as the consensus candidate because he did not want any hassles.

“I remember, before then, Yar’Adua was hardly attending Council of State meetings because of his health. So, l went to tell Baba what Yar’Adua told me. On the issue of Yar’Adua’s ill-health. I remember Obasanjo told me, ‘Don’t worry about his sickness; government money dey to manage his ill-health.’ Baba told me to go and put the outcome of my interaction with Yar’Adua in writing.

“Then Masari became the first loser; because, until then, Bello Masari as the Speaker of House of Reps was very loyal to Baba and did all the dirty jobs Baba wanted him to do, with the promise that he would be made the next Katsina governor after Yar’Adua. But once Yar’Adua became anointed as PDP candidate, he preferred Shema to be his successor. That was one of the conditions he listed. That was how a wedge came between Yar’Adua and Masari. “That was the genesis of the rift between Shema and Masari up until today. Shema was then the deputy national chairman of PDP. That was how Masari defected to CPC. What I am trying to say is that Obasanjo engineered all the bitterness that exists in Katsina politics today

“All the confusion in Nigeria today was caused by Obasanjo in his scheming to install a stooge, a weakling in power so that he would continue to be relevant.”

Fayose also spoke on how Obasanjo went on his knees to beg Gaddafi to seek the late dictator’s support for the third term plot.

He said: “It was such a pathetic scenario, so shameful. Obasanjo was speaking rapidly like a parrot. I was shocked beyond words. I never knew Obasanjo would be that humble.

“He was on one knee till the end of the conversation. Gaddafi kept quiet and was just watching Obasanjo. When Obasanjo stopped rambling, Gaddafi said, ‘Have you finished? Just know that I will not attend that meeting. I have other engagements.”

He also explained how on two major occasions when he went to visit Atiku at the height of Obasanjo’s third term bid, security details promptly reported him to the former President, even before he left the venue.

He said:  “Obasanjo told me that when you capture a general and you don’t kill him, he’ll come back and kill you; that since Atiku tried to stop him and failed, he must pay for it. And he (Atiku) is still paying for it.”

Fayose said he knew, as an insider at the time, that Obasanjo betrayed former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, to get the United States support for this third term bid, after promising Taylor safe haven in Nigeria.”

Fayose said he had not spoken with President Muhammadu Buhari in the last two years.

  • Supreme Court’s judgment on PDP has stabilised polity – Makarfi

Supreme Court’s judgment on PDP has stabilised polity – Makarfi

The Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said on Wednesday the Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership tussle brought stability to the polity.

Makarfi stated this when he received a delegation of the PDP Women Forum at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

Makarfi, who said the judgment had also calmed down tensions, promised that PDP would not let Nigerians down.

“It was a landmark judgment that touches on every political party you can think of. It was a landmark judgment that has stabilised the polity.

“We know there is hunger, we know there are difficulties and all kinds of problems in the country. But as soon as this judgment came, it seemed to have brought down tempers.

“Why tempers have gone down is that people have seen the alternative they have been waiting for. We will work together as always to make sure we don’t let the people down,” Makarfi said.

He re-emphasised that the party leadership would pursued reconciliation with PDP members who had either left the party or developed cold feet, even before 2015.

He added that apart from reconciliation, PDP needed to expand and attract new members to go beyond what it used to be, saying the process required accommodation.

He added: “If you can’t reconcile, you can’t expand if your policy will be exclusive in nature.

“As you reconcile and expand, you accommodate different political interest that is rational, that is reasonable, that is fair. Otherwise, people have no reason to reconcile.

“That should be the guiding principle; but in so doing, we are also not going to sacrifice those who have made investments for us to get to where we are today.”
