Makarfi, sheriff congratulate Ekeremadu at 55

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, on his 55th birth anniversary.

In separate messages, National Chairman of the party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff and the Chairman, National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, on Friday in Abuja, felicitated with Ekweremadu.

Makarfi, in a statement by the committee’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, commended Ekweremadu for his “outstanding contributions to the development of the legislature and the country”.

He described him as a “fighter for good causes”.

“We are indeed proud of his achievements as one of the pillars of the PDP, working with all the stakeholders to revive, rejuvenate and move the party to greater heights.

“We believe in his leadership qualities and urge him to continue with his services to humanity,” Makarfi added, and wished Ekweremadu good health, long life and more years of fruitful service to Nigeria.

Similarly, in a statement by Dr Cairo Ojougboh, his deputy, Sheriff said Ekweremadu was a true democrat and a man of honour.

Sheriff said that the PDP was very proud of the way Ekweremadu had carried himself in the Senate.

“He brought a wealth of experience into the 8th Assembly.

“He is a stabilizing force in the Senate, who has helped to streamline difficult issues in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.”(NAN)

PDP crisis: Supreme Court to hear Makarfi’s appeal May 25

The Supreme Court will on May 25 hear the appeal filed by the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Port-Harcourt, which recognised Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic chairman of the party.

A five-man panel of the apex court, led by Justice Musa Datijo Mohammed, chose the date after granting leave to the 1st and 2nd respondents (Sheriff and PDP’s National Secretary, Adewale Oladipo) to regularise their processes.

They were represented by Akin Olujinmi (SAN).

The court equally agreed to hear on same date, a motion filed by the Sheriff-led leadership of the party, challenging the legitimacy of the appeal filed in the name of the PDP by the Makarfi faction, which had been sacked by virtue of the Appeal Court judgment.

Thursday’s proceedings were witnesses by many stalwarts of the two factions fighting for the party leadership.

The spacious courtroom was full to the brims.

Those sighted by The Nation included Makarfi, Senator Ben Obi, Prof. Jerry Gana, a former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi and the Spokesman for the Makarfi faction, Dayo Adeyeye.

Makarfi slams Presidency over expulsion of Punch reporter

The Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has chided the Presidency for expelling The Punch Aso Rock correspondent, Olalekan Adetayo.

Adetayo was on Monday expelled from the Aso Villa by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief Security Officer, Abubakar Bashir over a report he did on Buhari’s health, which Bashir considered unpalatable.

A statement on Tuesday by the spokesman of the Makarfi camp, Prince Dayo Adeyeye said the development did not come as a surprise, stressing that the nation was gradually tilting toward full blown dictatorship.

The statement said, “The PDP acknowledges Mr President’s health challenges; and as a human being and an elder statesman, we quite understand the need for him to have adequate rest and continuous medical attention.

“We are therefore not too surprised that the President has not in recent times been able to fully face the rigours of governance and has to make very rare public appearances.

“This is pretty obvious to all Nigerians. The Punch story is, therefore, nothing extraordinary. It merely reflects what Nigerians already know with perhaps a little bit of speculative license. It, therefore, should not have elicited the extreme reaction from the President’s Chief Security Officer.

“The media, as the fourth estate of the realm is an important pillar of any democracy. Any attempt to gag the press in whatever guise is an abridgement of the rights of the people and a direct assault on our hard earned democracy.

“We therefore totally condemn the action of the President’s CSO. He must realise that we are in a democracy and not a military dictatorship. It is also revealing and shows the lack of synergy in the Villa that a reporter will be expelled without the knowledge or concurrence of the President’s Adviser on Media Relations.

“For the umpteenth time, we want to reiterate that Nigerians deserve to know the health condition of their President. No one has the right or power to hide the President behind the curtain while dishing out instructions to Nigerians in the name of the President.

“We join all well meaning Nigerians to wish the President a speedy recovery and pray that the Lord Almighty will grant all that is required for him to fulfil his responsibilities to our dear country”.

  • Nigeria now a gestapo state under APC – Makarfi

Nigeria now a gestapo state under APC – Makarfi

The Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government of running a Gestapo state.

According to the faction, the country is fast drifting into a dictatorship and possible anarchy under the present administration.

A statement on Thursday by the spokesman of the Makarfi camp, Prince Dayo Adyeye complained that prominent individuals that held public office in the last administration are being arrested and detained indefinitely without trial.

“For instance, the former Governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam was arrested by men of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) and has been in detention for over two months now without trial.

“Also, the former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu was arrested on April 5, 2017 by officers of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and like the others, he has been in detention and yet no case has been filed against him in any court by the anti-graft agency.

“Former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki has been in custody for about two years now without trial. Similar brutality, arrest and mindless detention went on with other PDP leaders and members that were arrested by either the DSS or the EFCC”, the statement said.

The opposition further lamented what it described as media trial and conviction of opposition elements before they are proven innocent or otherwise by the courts.

The statement continued, “It is also very clear in the Constitution of Nigeria that no security agency has the right or power to detain suspects more than 48 hours without trial.

“Ironically, while former leaders and members of the PDP are being arrested indiscriminately and detained without trial, other former office holders of the ruling APC who have been accused of various corrupt practices are yet to be arrested. Instead, they are compensated with juicy ministerial appointments -double standards.

“We are in a constitutional democracy and as such, the present APC administration must lead by example and obey court orders. It is on record that most of these suspects have been granted bail by the courts of the land and the ECOWAS Court in the case of Col. Sambo Dasuki .This is sheer lawlessness!

“We wish to further assure the public that the PDP is not against the anti-corruption fight. Our stand is that the present APC government must follow due process in dealing with issues of corruption as the PDP did during its governments without violating human rights of citizens, especially those suspects that may later be found innocent by the law court”.

Accusing the administration of injustice and vendetta, Makarfi called on the government to charge all those in detention to court and those granted bail by the courts must be freed immediately.

The party vowed to deploy all constitutional means both domestic and international to seek redress against what it described as Gestapo rule.

The party reminded the administration that the country is under a democracy and that Nigerians are fed up with undemocratic rule.

“We advise this government to stop forthwith; all actions that tend to heat up the system and push citizens into taking extreme measures in self defence.

“The economic hardship brought upon Nigerians by APC misrule is bad enough, abridging the people’s rights on top of that is like adding salt to injury”, the statement added

  • Makarfi protests indiscriminate arrest of members

Makarfi protests indiscriminate arrest of members

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has protested what it described as the untoward, unconstitutional and indiscriminate arrest and detention of PDP members and supporters nationwide on phantom charges by the All Progressive Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

It cited the arrest and detention of the party’s Jigawa State chapter chairman, Mallam Salisu Mamuda for criticising the Jigawa state government for allegedly spending N400 million to entertain defectors from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement Monday by the spokesman of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the faction also cited the arrest of its governorship aspirant in Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi by the Department of State Services (DSS) on February 17, 2017 for exposing the Forex racketeering by the APC led Government at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The statement continued, “Also on March 3, 2017, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, a PDP chieftain in Kogi State was arrested on trump-up charges and detained illegally for criticising the wrong policies, mis-governance  and non-performance of Governor Yahaya Bello.

“Just Monday, April 9, 2017, Mr. Austin Usman Okai, a PDP Youth leader and frontline critic of the Yahaya Bello’s APC led Government in Kogi State was arrested by men of the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on phantom petitions by some cronies of the Governor.

“There are also reports of indiscriminate arrest and detention of citizens of this country in Kaduna, Edo, Nasarawa amongst others at both the federal and state levels controlled by the ruling APC.

“These actions of the ruling party, the APC are absurd, disheartening and a serious threat to our hard earned democracy.  Nigerians cannot and should not be arrested and detained indiscriminately for criticizing and holding government accountable.

“Constructive criticism is the primary responsibility of opposition in a democracy all over the world and Nigeria cannot be an exception.

“We have also been alerted to the news of the Federal Government of Nigeria planning to tap mobile telephone lines and hacking of other devices of citizens as a way of harassing and intimidating them into silence.

“These and other unholy practices of this administration will henceforth be resisted by all Nigerians. We will mobilise Nigerians at all levels to fight against the use of arms in a democratic system to ridicule and intimidate citizens of this country.

“We will no longer tolerate this high handedness of the APC and we therefore demand the unconditional and immediate release of Mr. Austin Usman Okai and all our members in several detention centres of security agencies across the country.

“Finally, we wish to use this medium to inform world leaders on the serious issues of human rights violation in Nigeria since the APC administration took over power in May 29, 2015.

“We call on all civil rights organisations across the country and in the Diaspora to rise to the occasion. Our democracy is in serious danger and the leadership of the APC must be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order as a result of these undemocratic behaviours”.

2019: Lawyer advises PDP to resolve crisis fast

A lawyer, Mr Onyekachi Ubani, on Friday advised PDP to resolve its problems internally and politically to enhance preparations for the 2019 general elections.

Ubani gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He was reacting to filing of a motion by the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led PDP Caretaker Committee to strike out an appeal challenging the restoration of Sen. Ali-Modu Sheriff as the party’s national chairman.

NAN reports that the Supreme Court had on Thursday fixed May 4 to hear the motion.

The Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee is praying the Supreme Court to upturn the Feb.17 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt, which restored Sheriff.

Ubani told NAN that both factions of the PDP should adhere to Gov. Seriake Dickson’s Reconciliation Committee’s call for peace.

“PDP can put its house together for 2019 if it solves the problem politically.

“If they (PDP members) insist on court actions, and the court makes a pronouncement, I do not see any reconciliation.

“The best way is to put the matter out of court; both factional chairman should agree not to contest for the leadership of the party and allow neutral people to emerge as leaders.

“The moment they want this matter to be solved by the Supreme Court, the court’s pronouncement may be in favour of any of the factions, and the other faction may not accept it.

Ubani warned that continuation of the crisis would ‘kill’ the party.

“If they resolve this matter internally and politically without allowing the court to make the final pronouncement, the PDP factions may be on the verge of reconciliation,” Ubani said.

NAN reports that the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt had on Feb. 17 affirmed Sheriff as the national chairman of the party.

The PDP had in its May 2016 national convention resolved to sack the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

In place of the NWC and National Executive Committee of the party, the convention constituted a National Caretaker Committee headed by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi to manage the party and organise an elective national convention.

Sheriff challenged the development in court and secured judgment in his favour

Sheriff to Makarfi: Watch your tongue

The court backed National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, on Wednesday warned the chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, to watch his tongue.

Sheriff issued the warning in Abuja while receiving party supporters from Zamfara State who came pledge their support and loyalty to him.

Sheriff, on Tuesday, said God would decide his presidential ambition in the 2019 general election, a statement Makarfi claimed revealed Sheriff’s scheming for the PDP presidential ticket.

Reacting to the statement, Makarfi had accused Sheriff of scheming to manipulate his cronies into strategic party offices at the planned convention, so that they could rubber stamp him as the presidential candidate.

But taking exception to the accusation by the caretaker committee chairman, Sheriff said “Makarfi should behave himself and stop taking about me all the time.”

According to Sheriff, Makarfi became governor of Kaduna State through the will of God and not because he was better than any other person.

He said, “I am not an ambitious person like some of my friends. One of the newspapers said Sheriff wants to do convention because he wants to become president. President of Nigeria is decided by God and the people.

“Whenever people lack confidence in themselves, they don’t believe in the will of God. I have called him (Makarfi) this morning. It is the will of God. I want to sincerely request Makarfi to watch his words. I don’t believe that anyone of us here have the powers of God.

“I am here to prepare PDP and give it to the grassroots. I am here to conduct credible convention. For God sake I don’t fear anybody.

“The only thing I fear is Allah. I am mindful of whatever I do. I have fulfilled my obligation to Allah. I want to tell him today that he should behave. Myself and Makarfi are two different persons. Sheriff and Makarfi can never be the same person.

“Face your business and stop mentioning the name of Sheriff every time. Go and appeal to Nigerians for what you want. If they accept, fine and good.”

Speaking earlier, the leader of the Zamfara delegation, Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, said they came to show their happiness with Sheriff as chairman of the party.

  • PDP state chairmen clash over Sheriff, Makarfi

Two factions of state chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday clashed in Abuja over the party’s court backed National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff and the chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

While one faction comprising 22 members declared support for Sheriff, the other faction from 26 states, affirmed support for Makarfi.

The pro-Makarfi faction led by the Akwa Ibom State chapter chairman, Mr. Paul Ekpo, described the pro-Sheriff faction as impostors, saying its members used their names and forged their signatures in communicating with the public.

At a media conference attended by 26 state chairmen, Ekpo accused the pro- Sheriff faction of convening an illegal meeting of the forum of state chairmen without the authentic members in attendance.

“The Forum takes serious objection to the way and manner a few of our colleagues, without authority used the names of the Forum to convene purported meeting of the Forum of PDP Chairmen on March 17, 2017.

“The Forum is not happy that many chapter chairmen of the party had their names, telephone numbers written as attendees and their signatures forged.

“The Forum is aware that the affected chairmen have since denounced the fraudulent use of their names. We therefore support whatever appropriate action these chairmen may deem fit and proper to take to protect their good names,” Ekpo stated.

The pro- Makarfi faction protested the appointment into vacant positions in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) by Sheriff.

According to Ekpo, the action ran contrary to the party’s constitution and the February 17 judgment of the Court of Appeal that affirmed Sheriff as national chairman.

The Ekpo group also endorsed the report of Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson’s reconciliation committee, but urged the governor to submit the report to all the organs of the party and the caretaker committee for their input.

  • PDP crisis: My committee report not sacrosanct – Dickson

PDP crisis: My committee report not sacrosanct – Dickson

The Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has said the report of his reconciliation committee is not sacrosanct.

Dickson stated this in Abuja on Wednesday while presenting a copy of the report to the Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The report, which contained recommendations for the conduct of the party’s national convention, was last week, presented to the court backed National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff.

The governor said the report was not tailored to favour any group or individual, contrary to insinuations in some quarters, adding that the document is open to amendment.

He said, “It’s just a proposal that the committee came up with. It is not cast in stone so it is not sacrosanct. We are still consulting with key organs and stakeholders in the party. So it is still subject to amendment.

“Anyone with superior ideas and views on the document would be given the opportunity to make contributions because we made the proposal in good faith.”

The governor said he came to submit the report to the caretaker committee to enable its members make contributions in form of amendment or additional suggestions on the way forward.

Rueing the leadership crisis in the party, Governor Dickson sought the cooperation and contribution of the Makarfi group in finding political solution to the crisis.

He added: “Now the party has challenges, the institutions are intact. The organs of the party are intact, they are not affected by the crisis and as such, they can play their role and their leaders are known.

“We have them certainly as committee and we have said the convention committee can handle even the zoning and we should be able to confide in the judgement and wisdom of the leaders of the party.”

  • PDP crisis: Dickson urges Makarfi to step down

PDP crisis: Dickson urges Makarfi to step down

Gov. Seriake Dickson, the Chairman of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, has called on the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee to step down in the interest of the party.

The Bayelsa governor made the call while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

Dickson said the stage was now set for all the chieftains and elders of the party to impress it on the caretaker committee to cede its authority to the Modu Sheriff-led leadership.

“When the idea of making Sheriff the National Chairman of our party was hatched, I personally kicked against it.

“ I also turned down all the overtures from Sheriff because I did not believe in him and what he did.

“So now, my position is that we have to move forward. I am a politician of conviction, I am not a politician of convenience and I am not a typical Nigerian politician,’’ Dickson said.

He said the party had come to a threshold when the right political decision should be taken to end the prolonged crisis.

“The Makarfi – led caretaker committee should remember that it was a brain child of the majority of party members including I at a convention in Port Harcourt.

“I and up to 80 per cent of the population of the PDP members were for Makarfi but the unfolding events have compelled us to adopt a political resolution instead of embarking on further bickering.

“As politicians and democrats, we must first obey the constitution and all other instruments of civil rule and which includes obeying the judiciary,’’ he said.

He also said: “ We had expected that the Court of Appeal would give us judgment, but it rather upheld Sheriff as the National Chairman of the party.

“Whether anybody likes Sheriff’s face or not, the Makarfi-led caretaker committee was stripped of its authority to manage the affairs of the party the day the judgment was delivered.

“It was in the spirit to honour the court’s pronouncement that the party’s reconciliation committee that I chair submitted its report on how we shall move forward to Sheriff.

“In fact, as it stands now, Sheriff has started addressing issues within the party, he is the one sending names of party members contesting elections in various states.

“If there is going to be a by-election in Kaduna today, Makarfi’s home state, INEC would not accept correspondences from Makarfi any longer because his business in the party has ended,’’ he said.

Dickson said Sheriff had always been disposed to political settlement of the crisis, adding that Makarfi had remained adamant.

“So the reconciliation committee which I chair met several times to review our position in the light of the Court of Appeal’s judgment.

“The reality is that Makarfi no longer has the legal backing to carry on with the task of managing the party.

“We are aware of this quagmire, and therefore, the reconciliation committee went ahead to formulate a realistic, practical and strategic response to this reality because in the end it would be to the benefit of PDP,’’ he said.

Dickson said the template to ensure the conduct of the party’s National Convention in June was uppermost, adding that Sheriff was positively disposed to it.

“So if you said you are passionate about the survival of the party, then you should be willing to sacrifice your ambition.

“The crisis has caused us a lot, our elected officials, top notch members are decamping to even lesser parties.

“The party continues to fail Nigerians because the crisis has so far prevented it from being a sound credible opposition even in the face of bad governance in the country right now,” he said.

On whether it was right to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal, Dickson said an amicable resolution of the crisis remained the best option.

“Yes, we said they can go on to appeal but without prejudice to the Supreme Court case; let us intensify and fast track the peace moves,’’ he said. (NAN)
