Language is a means of communication, a vital part of our cultural identity, and a source of sheer pleasure for many who explore its highways and by-ways.

“Therefore, the language we speak reflects who we are, what culture we belong to and the origin we are attached to. To be a happy part of harmonious unity, we need to have the freedom and comfort of showing this cultural heritage to others who are not like us. I happily observe that Nigeria stays to be a rich home for diverse cultures allowing various tribes and traditions to co-exist peaceful. People in Nigeria are proud to be a Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Fulani or a member of any other tribes and cultures. This is a cultural richness that many other countries admire and emulate’.

  • Day Aisha Buhari made case for bill

Day Aisha Buhari made case for bill

The two chambers of the National Assembly on Monday, May 9th engaged themselves with two high-profile public hearing on a bill to create the North East Development Commission.

Entitled the North East Development Commission Bill, 2016, the sentiment attached to the bill is understandable given the need to fashion a platform to address the ruinous misadventure of Boko Haram insurgents in the zone.

That the NEDC Bill has all the trappings of the Niger Delta Development Commission Bill that gave birth to the NDDC is not in doubt.

Perhaps, the major difference in terms of funding is that while the NDDC arelies heavily on accruals from oil companies operating in the Niger Delta region for its funding, the NEDC, when passed, will draw its funding from federal allocation and payment by extractive and mining companies doing business in the zone.

Laudable as the steps being taken to set in motion machinery to rebuild the ravaged North East, there appear to be disconnect between the Senate and the House of Representatives on how to go about it.

Keen observers at the senate talk shop wondered why two separate public hearing on the same bill should be held same time, same day by the same parliament?

The two chambers are known to have in the past harmonised their positions and conducted joint public hearing on an important bill such as the NEDC Bill, at least to save cost as well as to narrow areas of disagreement.

Some say ego trip and unhealthy rivalry that have held a lot of legislative activities down in the National Assembly must have been at play.

Again even before the crucial interventionist bill is passed and signed into law, a subtle fight over the headquarters of the commission seemed to have emerged among the North East states.

While Senators from Borno State, the center of Boko Haram insurgency, want the headquarters of the commission to be cited in Maidugiri, lawmakers from Yobe and Bauchi states are campaigning for the headquarters of the commission to be cited in their states.

Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, represented by Education Commissioner, Mohammed Lamin, at the House of Representatives version of the public hearing, did not hide his desire to have the headquarters of the commission cited in Damaturu, his state capital.

The question on the lips of some stakeholders is whether there is any need to work at cross purposes on a bill that has one objective, the rebuilding of the badly damaged North East geo-political zone?

Apart from these avoidable downsides, the NEDC Bill has had a smooth sail in both chambers.

No doubt, the presence of the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, at the House of Representatives public hearing was a huge boost for the bill. Her presence however gave the impression that the bill has become, for all intents and purposes, a done deal.

The First Lady was reported to have declared in a memorandum she personally submitted at the public hearing, “I believe that for rapid development to come to the region, a concerted effort must be made. I am Aisha Muhammadu Buhari and I support the NEDC Bill 100 percent.”

On his part, Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, gave the Senate Joint Committee on Special Duties, Establishment and Public Service up till May 25, 2016 to complete work on the bill and report back to plenary.

Saraki, who gave the charge while inaugurating the public hearing, insisted that what had been witnessed in the North East demanded special attention from well meaning Nigerians and not just from the government.

Chairman of the Joint Committee, Senator Abdul-Aziz Murtala Nyako, had promised that his committee would work assiduously to ensure that the report on the bill was laid and read the third time on May, 25, 2016.

Following Nyako’s remarks, Saraki concluded that though time was running out, he would hold the committee to its promise to turn in the report on the bill to plenary on May 25.

For Saraki, it is imperative to pass the bill quickly to mitigate the precarious situation of those affected by insurgency in the North East.

He said: “We must all rise up and say never again. We have seen families wiped out, children orphaned, incomes plunged below a tenth of what they were a decade ago. Families that have survived this onslaught have largely survived with little to live by and now rely directly on handouts for food rations.”

He said the importance of the bill becomes more germane since the war against insurgency cannot be won by might alone.

Director General, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Mohammed Sani Sidi, in his presentation disclosed that over 800 repentant Boko Haram insurgents are currently undergoing skill acquisition training as part of efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate them into society.

Sidi said the skill acquisition exercise is being handled by the military and monitored by the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

While responding to the comment by a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kaka Kyari Gujbawu, who called for general amnesty for repentant Boko Haram insurgents, Sidi said: “It is not true that the Federal Government has no amnesty package. There is what is called safe corridor. I do know that 800 plus (Boko Haram) have been registered. I don’t want to be specific. They have exited Boko Haram through the window. They are currently receiving various skill acquisition training. The military is handling it. It is being monitored by the Office of the CDS.”

  • ‘Poor access to education by women fuels trafficking’

The wife of the President, Hajiya, Aisha Buhari, has said the lack of access to education by women in the country puts them at risk of trafficking and exploitation

She said girls and women are disadvantaged in Nigeria due to lack of access to education.

Mrs. Buhari, who was represented by the wife of the Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo, said Nigeria remains among countries of the world where girls are denied access to education.

She spoke in Abuja on Thursday at the graduation ceremony of 7,500 non- formal education learners and announcement of the 2nd phase of the UNESCO – Procter Gamble project.

The president’s wife said: “I believe we are all aware that like many countries of the world, our women and girls in Nigeria are often denied the opportunities for education. It is widely known that the lack of education limits the prospects for women and girls to excel in life.

“It decreases family income, it reduces knowledge of good nutrition and health, it increases their vulnerability and put women and girls at risk of trafficking and exploitation. All of these contribute to limiting the economic advancement of women and indeed of the entire nation.”

Aisha Buhari names new NLNG’s ship

The wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari  has named a new ship owned by Bonny Gas Transport (BGT), a subsidiary of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), LNG Abuja II.

The naming of the new ship by Mrs. Buhari was done in her capacity as the vessel’s Godmother.

At a ceremony in Geoje Island, South Korea, Mrs. Buhari with top executives and directors of NLNG and BGT conducted the ceremonial naming of the 175,000m3 ship, which will carry LNG from Bonny Terminal to customers around the world.

The General Manager, External Relations Division of NLNG, Mr. Kudo Eresia-Eke said LNG Abuja II is the fifth ship to be commissioned from the six newly acquired vessels by NLNG. It is also the third ship by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). In 2013, BGT signed a contract with SHI and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the construction and delivery of four and two ships.

Mrs. Buhari said: “It was with great delight that I received the invitation of the management of Nigeria LNG Limited to be the God-mother of and commission this magnificent new vessel; one of five recently purchased.

“The new ships, I learnt, are part of a growth programme, which will ensure that NLNG continues to develop its capacity and enhance its reputation as one of the most reliable gas suppliers in the world. I am, therefore, very pleased to be the new ship’s Sponsor Lady and Godmother. By tradition, the Sponsor Lady bestows good luck on the vessel and the crew, and I wish to assure you all, that this vessel will go out into the world, proudly flying Nigeria’s flag and be an enduring symbol of the partnership and cooperation between our two countries for many years to come.”

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer NLNG, Babs Omotowa said: “As we take possession of this great ship, we can reflect on the double symbolism of today’s event. Our country and the LNG business are both experiencing some difficult times. It is altogether fitting and symbolic that our country and our company are by this ceremony reaffirming our faith and confidence in a bright and prosperous future for our country as well as our industry.  This new vessel bearing the name of Nigeria’s capital city is a sign of that confidence and that is what this ceremony represents for us.

“We take pride in the fact that LNG Abuja II is truly Nigerian. Based on Nigeria LNG’s local content aspirations, we have become the first Nigerian company to incorporate unique local content component into the construction of our vessels. Courtesy of this local content programme, over 600 young Nigerians acquired specialised skills in shipbuilding.

Aisha Buhari, Governors’ wives meet in Aso Rock

The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha on Monday met with wives of state governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting, which was held at the First Lady Conference Hall, was to evolve ways the State Governors First Ladies could serve the interest of their people better.

Noting that the constitution does not explicitly provide a role for First Ladies, Aisha told the First Ladies that it did not stop them from making a difference in the lives of the people.

According to her, the Governors’ Wives Forum was an avenue for them to support their husbands towards delivering on the change agenda.

She said: “As wives of political office holders, we must continue to do our best in contributing to the success.

“I believe in our little ways, we can assist them to bring succour to the populace, especially those in need such as victims of insurgency in the North East and other forms of violence, physically challenged and other vulnerable groups.

“It is on this note I felt it is important for us to come together to strengthen our unity and extend our solidarity to each other under a common platform.

“There, we need to develop strong leadership structures in the two regions not only in one as the case with the already known Northern Governors Wives Forum of the country.” She added

Aisha also called for the restructuring of the two regional halves of the forum to boost networking, cooperation and constructive partnership.

She urged the First Ladies to be prepared to deal with programmes that are capable of impacting positively on the lives of citizens particularly the less privileged members of the society.

She listed some of the challenges facing the poor to include widowhood rites, female inheritance rights, female genital mutilation, early marriages, violence against women and children, high maternal mortality and women economic empowerment.

She also urged the wives of the state governors to mobilize support for government policies and programmes.

Aisha Buhari present gifts to patients in FCT

The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Friday expressed her love to patients as she personally distributed gifts to them at the Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja, to mark Christmas.

“I am here today to tell you that we do not forget you. We have you in mind,’’ she told the patients.

She said she was in the hospital to celebrate and share gifts to the patients, who were suppose to have been home celebrating, but rather they were in the hospital as a result of ailments.

Mrs Buhari expressed happiness while sharing the gifts because of the significance of Christmas which is synonymous with sharing and exchanging of gifts among people.

However, the wife of the president flayed the husband of one Mrs Hellen Agada, one of the patients with multiple operations, who abandoned her after admission.
“I am not happy when I meet a lady who had several operations and her husband ran away and left her. I think men should have feelings for their wives,’’ she said.

She advised men to always remain firm as the pillars of the home not minding the trials or tribulations.

Aisha Buhari condoles Tinubu over Dantoro’s death

Wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari, on Saturday visited the Ikoyi, Lagos residence of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to commiserate with him over the death of the immediate past Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Haliru Dantoro Kitoro 111, who passed on, on October 30.

Tinubu is known to be very close to the late monarch, who gave him his famous traditional title, Jagaban Borgu, in 2006.

The President’s wife, who arrived at Tinubu’s residence at about 12.45pm, was received by the APC leader and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Speaking on the late monarch, Hajia Buhari described him as a committed nationalist and bridge builder, who contributed immensely to the unity of the country by extending hands of fellowship beyond his immediate constituency.

In his response, Asiwaju Tinubu thanked Hajia Buhari for the visit, while describing the late traditional ruler as a nationalist whose absence would be sorely missed.

Tinubu commended Buhari’s wife, who was accompanied by the wives of Lagos and Osun States governors, “on her style and commitment to Nigeria”.

The visit of the wife of the President lasted for about 45 minutes.

Some of the dignitaries that accompanied Hajia Buhari on the visit, included wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode and her Osun State counterpart, Mrs. Sherifat Aregbesola, amongst others.

Aisha Buhari vows to implement Child’s Right Act

    • Islamic scholars to criminalise wife battery, says Sanusi

Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has promised  to advocate for passage of the Child’s Right Act in states yet to do so.

She said she would also campaign for better implementation of the Acts in states where it has been passed into law.

Mrs. Buhari spoke in Abuja at the opening of the national conference on the social protection of the Girl Child with the theme: “Strategies to improve protection of the rights of the girl child in Nigeria.”

She said although government has key legislations dealing with child marriage, they have not been fully domesticated or yielding the desired results.

Mrs. Buhari pointed out that child marriage affects the health, education and economic condition of the victims while fuelling domestic violence against girls and preventing them from achieving their full potentials.

Wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, who represented Mrs. Buhari at the occasion, stated she has seen the wife of the president weep when the negative issues of the girl child came up.

Mrs. Buhari said: “All my life as an adult, I have been an advocate of quality education and the protection of the girl child.

“I stand with you today as an advocate towards the social protection of the girl child. I commit to support ActionAid  and other Civil Society Organisations to advocate for the passage of the Child’s Right Act in the remaining Nigerian States and also for a better implementation in those states that have passed it.”

The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, confirmed Islamic scholars in the  country will soon agree on guidelines of Islamic family laws.

The proposed laws, he said, will prohibit fathers from forcing their daughters into marriage and criminalise wife battery.

Sanusi said it will also address spousal support for men that divorce their wives and send them packing with their children, without making provision for them.

The Emir said: “ We need to understand what the local problem is before coming up with a theoretical solution.

“It is often important to understand why people marry their children off at an early age. We will need to deal with how people understand religion and culture.

“The idea of religion being used for the justification of certain practices, the solution is not to condemn or attack the religion but to understand that perhaps it is not really the religion but a way that favours those who have power in the society.”

He added: “We want to take away the right of the father to marry off his daughter without her consent because that right does not exist.

“There are parts of the world where when you have a first wife and want to marry a second wife, you must prove to a court that you can take care of the second wife and your first wife is not going to suffer financially as a result of your decision and neither will her privileges be taken away.”

“There is an Islamic law that says that it is your responsibility to maintain your family and we want to ensure that it is documented.

“So, if you divorce your wife, you will be made to know how much you will have to give to her monthly for food, clothing, education and the court should be able to seize your assets if you refuse to meet up.”
