  • Aiteo: We didn’t hinder NOSDRA from investigating fire site

Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company (AEEPCo), the exploration and production arm of Aiteo Group, has said it did not stop National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency(NOSDRA) from investigating the fire incident at its oil well 7 in Nembe Creek, Bayelsa State on March 1.

On March 2, 2019, several national and international media organisations had erroneously reported that scores of people were missing after an explosion occurred along the Nembe Creek Trunk Line (NCTL), the major crude oil pipeline traversing the Nembe area. Aiteo is the operator of the NCTL as well as the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29.

Further details on the incident from the affected area as well as statements from Aiteo and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have cleared that it was not a pipeline explosion but a fire at a nearby oil well. Also, Aiteo stated that there was no casualty from the incident. This was corroborated by community people who later confirmed that there were no missing individuals.

Fresh documents made available to reporters indicate that Aiteo had contacted the relevant agencies, including NOSDRA on the matter within 24 hours as stipulated by law. A document referenced AEEPCo/PRD/2019/05 and signed by its Chief Operating Officer, Emmanuel Ukegbu reads: “At the early hour of today 01/03/19, we received a report from the Mile 1 Community of a suspected explosion at Nembe Creek Well-7, following which, our Operation ER Team was triggered. Preliminary investigation suspects a possible explosion that resulted into fire at about 01.00 hours in the vicinity of Nembe Creek Well-7.By 01:30hrs, the fire has tapered down.

“It is important to note that prior to this fire incident, all facilities were shut-in due to NCTL outage about 17.00hrs on 28/02/19. We are continuing with investigations and further information will be communicated.”

According to a source at the company that pleaded anonymity, “The comments of Mr. Francis Umeh, Head of NOSDRA’s Field Office in Bayelsa State are false. How can Aiteo deny access to a government agency on an asset that is primarily owned by the government? It is inappropriate for the agency to assert that we are resisting investigations when we informed the commission about the incident the day it occurred and have not precluded them from gaining access to the site. The incidence report was submitted to NOSDRA and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and as soon as we got a clear sense of how things played out.”

NOSDRA had accused Aiteo of frustrating efforts to investigate the incident. Umeh told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital, that the stance of the oil firm was slowing NOSDRA from promptly carrying out its mandate.

The NOSDRA field office boss also said Aiteo did not report the incidence within 24 hours of occurrence as stipulated by law. “The incident occurred on Friday and it took them some time to report it officially to NOSDRA; we have plans to visit the site, but the operator is resisting and frustrating our efforts,” Umeh said.

NOSDRA’s assertions seem inconsistent with available evidence and definitely suggest either a communication gap within the organisation or an unexplainable fabrication.

  • NFF thanks Aiteo founder Benedict Peters

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) lauded Benedict Peters for the role Aiteo Group played in redefining football in Nigeria and creating the enabling factors for the Super Eagles to qualify after missing out on back-to-back editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.

In a message to the founder and Executive Vice President of the Aiteo group, Benedict Peters, the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick lauded him and the Aiteo group for putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians.

According to Pinnick, “Aiteo Group has redefined Nigerian football and have put smiles on the faces of Nigerians. He added that Nigerians are currently celebrating the qualification for AFCON 2019 after two successive misses, and the generality of Nigerians have now joined us in recognizing the role Aiteo played…”

“Dear Mr Benedict Peters, kindly accept my sincerest gratitude to your esteemed self and the Aiteo Group for redefining Nigerian football and putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians. Today, everybody is celebrating Nigeria’s qualification for AFCON 2019 after two successive misses, and the generality of Nigerians have now joined us in recognizing the role Aiteo played. Once again, I doff my hat and a big thank you.”

In June 2017, Aiteo followed up this sponsorship with a fresh N2.5billion agreement to underwrite the cost of the Federation Cup, now renamed Aiteo Cup, which they have taken to greater heights, adding glamour and colour to the game, and making it the largest televised finals in the history of the FA. This sponsorship ignited renewed public interest in the competition with the record crowd attendance at the 2018 final serving as testament.

In October 2017, Benedict Peters took his philanthropy and corporate social investment beyond Nigeria’s borders when Aiteo announced a partnership agreement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to sponsor the Annual CAF Awards 2018. The event, now called the AITEO-CAF Awards, honours footballers who have made outstanding contributions to the development of football development on the continent.

  • AITEO threatens to quit Nigerian football

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) major sponsor AITEO has threatened to quit following the crisis that has engulfed the football house.

In a statement signed by its Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, Ndiana Matthew, AITEO expressed concern over the lingering crisis, while urging the federation to resolve the imbroglio within 14 days.

“AITEO lends its voice to that of many well-meaning Nigerians in calling for the quick and decisive resolution of the current issues, especially as future campaigns for glory in the African Nations Cup are imminent. Indisputably, cer-tainty and stability with the leadership of the NFF remain pertinent to sponsors like us in order to continue to commit to the growth of Nigerian football in the manner that we have done.  The lingering unpalatable situation makes it difficult for us, as a law-abiding organisation, to operate responsibly within the demands placed on us.

“Accordingly, we are constrained to indicate that unless these issues are resolved satisfactorily in the manner dictated by the requirements of the world governing body FIFA, within fourteen (14) days hereof, we will deem ourselves compelled to reconsider our position with respect to participation in the various arrangements in which we are involved. We trust that the observations we have made in this release will provide both assurance and clarification on some of the issues that may have been raised by these circumstances,” the statement stated.

AITEO, however, expressed its willingness to continue its support for the NFF, having been supported the national teams since April 2017. “Aiteo has, since coming into Nigerian Football to take up the provision of financial support to the technical crew for the National Team in April 2017 demonstrated its satisfaction with the relationship by expanding its relationship to cover the sponsorship of the AITEO CUP. Steady satisfaction then led to our sponsorship of the NFF Awards (with the first edition held in Lagos February 2018).

“Additionally, AITEO has supported the NFF with the building of State FA secretariats to support grassroots football development (with 6 across the six zones of the country on the verge of completion and another 12 about to start). AITEO has also heavily supported the quali-fication of the Super Eagles for the 2018 World Cup offering huge incentives and bonuses to motivate the players during critical matches. During the recently concluded 2018 World Cup proper, AITEO hugely motivated the players with a bonus of $50,000 per un-replied goal,” they added.

AITEO, however, emphasised its transparency and account-ability policies in its dealing with NFF, while urging the federation to consider the interest of over 180m Nigerians. “Nigeria has just returned from a World Cup campaign from which the country can feel justifiably proud of its accomplishment at the tournament.  The position of the practices and regulation of World Football in FIFA’s statutes, regulations and practices are common knowledge.  Whatever the case is, Nigerian football cannot operate in isolation.  This compels the absolute necessity to operate within the parameters that regulate the other 210 countries that comprise world football. The prevalence of the current crisis detracts from the exalted heights of respectability Nigeria now enjoys in African and World football.  Crises like these are unnecessary dis-tractions and are unhealthy and divisive.  If this persists, there will be only one loser – NIGERIA and its 180 Million people! This consequence must be avoided, at all costs.”

  • AITEO Threatens to Quit Nigeria Football

    • Gives NFF 14-day ultimatum to resolve crisis

Aiteo on Wednesday handed down a two week ultimatum for the leadership crisis rocking Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) be resolved, otherwise it will withdraw all its deal with the glasshouse.

The major sponsor of Nigeria football  made this known in a signed statement made available on Wednesday afternoon.

It reads, “The persisting situation makes it difficult for us, as a law-abiding entity, to operate responsibly within the demands placed on us.

”Accordingly, we are constrained to indicate that unless these issues are resolved satisfactorily in the manner dictated by the requirements of the world governing body FIFA within fourteen (14) days hereof, we will deem ourselves compelled to reconsider our position with respect to participation in the various arrangements in which we are involved.”

The Africa Conglomerate company however called on well-meaning Nigerians to intervene on the glass-house crisis and also advised that this should be done to safe time as the 2019 African Cup of Nations beacons.

“AITEO lends its voice to that of many well-meaning Nigerians to call for the quick and decisive resolution of the current issues especially as future campaigns for glory in the African Nations Cup are imminent.

“Indisputably, certainty and stability with the leadership of the NFF remain pertinent to sponsors like us to continue to commit to the growth of Nigerian football in the manner that we have done,” it said in the statement.

Aiteo has been sponsoring the Nigeria football since April 2017 and it played major sponsorship role in the just concluded FIFA 2018 World Cup for the Super Eagles.

  • Aiteo, NCDMB, Total get awards

The Aiteo Group has won declared Indigenous Oil and Gas Company of the Year.

This was at the  Nigerian Oil and Gas (NOG) Awards held in Abuja.

The gala and awards night rounded off the Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibitions organised by  London-based CWC Group.

NOG is Nigeria’s yearly oil and gas industry event, which draws key players across the energy sector. It is a viable platform for networking, sharing ideas, and exploring new opportunities and innovations in the industry.

This year, many industry professionals came from both the public and private sectors.

Aiteo’s CEO and Executive Vice Chairman, Benedict Peters, attributed the company’s emergence as the indigenous oil and gas company of the year to the depth of its human resource, and sustainable investments in the industry, and the economy.

“We remain committed to our vision of shaping the future of sustainable energy in Nigeria and beyond, strategically deploying resources and technologies that lead to sustained economic development and value for all stakeholders. This honour from the NOG is fulfilling, particularly coming from our peers and a reputable industry platform. We dedicate this award to the highly committed, talented and industrious people working at Aiteo and making things possible on a daily basis,” Peters added.

In the Corporate social responsibility (CSR) arena, Aiteo gives back to the local communities in which it operates through grants and donations, seed capital and philanthropy. It has also supported several social investment projects, including special focus on supporting the study of Engineering in host communities and sports, the CEO said.

In sports, Aiteo has become the  major financier of football after a string of contributions to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the  Super Eagles. To support local football, Aiteo took over the sponsorship of the Federation Cup,  and renamed Aiteo Cup.

On the continental stage, Aiteo partnered the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to sponsor the African Football Awards in January this year.

According to Victor Okoronkwo, Aiteo’s Senior Vice President, the awards are a testimony to the organization’s commitment to adding value across the Spectrum of the Nigerian Energy milieu.
“In recent years, our value footprints have become more glaring on the Nigerian energy scene. These include strong commitment to local content, host community engagement, and Corporate Social Responsibility. We have also been a major active partner of the Nigerian Super Eagles.”
