Why we must make sacrifices, by Ajimobi, Bamidele

OYO State Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi and a former House of Representatives member, Opeyemi Bamidele, have enjoined political leaders and followers to be prepared to make sacrifices for the country’s growth.

Ajimobi gave his advice in an interview with reporters after Eid-el-Kabir prayers at Agodi prayer ground in Ibadan.

Others with him include some members of his executive council, the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji Dauda Makanjuola and other Islamic faithful.

The governor called on the citizens to perform their civic responsibilities and to play the role expected of them for the country’s progress.

On the essence of the Sallah celebration, the governor admonished the people and those in position of authority to ensure that they fulfilled every promise they made, which, he said, is in line with teachings of the holy Qur’an.

“For every position we occupy in life, there is a responsibility. As Prophet Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son, we should also be ready to sacrifice. We should not always expect that only God must give; every individual must also give to get.

“For me, Eid-el Kabir signifies promises fulfilled. When a promise is made, we must ensure that we fulfill it. As government, we must endeavour to fulfill our promises.”

The Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh AbdulGaniyu Agbotomokekere called for tolerance and peaceful co-existence among  residents of Ibadan.

He counselled the people to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement to security agents.

Bamidele appealed to Muslims to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari to overcome the economic and security crises confronting the nation.

The former lawmaker, who felicitated with Muslims for witnessing another Sallah, said every patriotic Nigerian must view the economic situation as requiring a collective effort for the citizenry to wriggle out and emerge stronger.

The former federal lawmaker urged the Muslims to imbibe the culture of perseverance, love, and the spirit of be your brother’s keeper as commanded by Prophet Mohammed (SAW), for the country to rise to reckoning again.

Bamidele lauded the Muslims for their prayers and unflagging belief in the project Nigeria, describing their contributions as sustaining the corporate existence of the nation this far.

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has urged the Muslim community to imbibe the spirit of togetherness, peaceful co-existence and love for one another as exemplified by Prophet Muhammed (SAW).

In his Eid-el Kabir message, the governor said only in an atmosphere of peace and love could the people thrive and attain their potential.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, said the country needs these attributes to achieve greatness.

Ajimobi hailed the people for their understanding and continued support for his administration.

The governor said: “I want to assure the citizenry that this administration will continue to introduce people-friendly policies and explore other avenues that would bail the state out of its economic doldrums.

“Let me also enjoin our Muslim brothers and sisters to remember those in the Holy Land in their prayers as they proceed to Mount Arafat today (Sunday) to have a peaceful and accident-free prayer session.

“We should pray for the safe return of those on holy pilgrimage to Mecca, as well as other Muslims from every part of the world. Let us use the period to pray for the peace, progress and economic emancipation of our country.

“I enjoin you to continue to exhibit love towards your fellow human beings and re-dedicate yourselves to the service of Almighty Allah and humanity, as demonstrated by Prophet Muhammed (SAW) during his earthly sojourn.”

The governor spoke yesterday in Ibadan, the state capital, during the inauguration of the Eminent Persons Forum at the Police Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

He urged them to stop the act in the interest of the state.

The governor said: “As traditional rulers, politicians, captains of industry, professionals, we know who are criminals. It is the eminent persons that usually call the security agencies to release criminals. Please, let us expose them.

“Also, let us protect the welfare of the police. In some circumstances, they also have to save their lives.

“It is the responsibility of all of us to expose the criminals we know.

“When you talk about the developed countries, it is not the police that go after criminals; it is the technology. Let us put emphasis on modern technology. We can also have traditional ways of exposing criminals so that things can also work.”

Police Commissioner Samuel Adegbuyi told the gathering that the forum was in line with the directive of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Idris Ibrahim, to state police commands to constitute bodies in their respective states.

“It is expected to serve as an intervention forum saddled with responsibilities of control, management and resolution of crises/conflicts and taking measures to prevent crimes through the instrumentality of alternative dispute resolution as a veritable tool for maintenance of peace, unity and law and order in their communities,” he said.

    •’They’ll aid growth’

OYO State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has approved the creation of 35 new local council development areas (LCDAs) to accelerate even growth at the grassroots.

This followed a motion, entitled: “Need to establish Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) for effective grassroots development”, brought before the House of Assembly, on June 16.

Lawmakers urged the government to take proactive measures to establish LCDAs to ensure that growth gets to every community.

Chief of Staff to the Governor  Dr. Gbade Ojo made this known yesterday while addressing reporters in Ibadan.

He said the approval would give more legal teeth to Oyo State Gazette No. 23, Vol 27 of August 13, 2002, which created the 35 LCDAs, but with a nomenclature of local government areas.

Ojo said the 35 new LCDAs would be distributed in line with the state’s political and administrative zones.

He listed the new LCDAs as: Ibadan Zone 14, Ibarapa zone two, Oyo zone four, Ogbomoso seven, Oke-Ogun eight.

He said the governor had directed the commissioner for Justice to prepare enabling laws as Executive Bill to be presented to the House of Assembly so that the new LCDAs can take off.

“Between 2002 till date, there has been explosion in the demography of each council area to the extent that what was gazetted in 2002 may not be sufficiently representative of the yearning of our people.

“Thus, any council area that needs more may begin to work on memorandum to justify their demands as in no distant future,” he said.

Ajimobi canvasses support for APC candidate in Oyo by-election

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) still holds the ace Oyo State as the party with the best welfare package and comprehensive rural-urban development, Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has said.

He said this while addressing the electorate during a campaign rally organised by APC to canvass for votes for the party’s candidate in Saturday’s by-election into Oorelope State Constituency, Mr. Jimoh Gbadamosi, at Igboho on Tuesday.

The governor called on the people to come out en masse and cast their votes for the ruling party’s candidate, stressing that they stood to gain more from voting for APC than any opposition party.

The seat had become vacant following the murder of the former occupant, Mr. Gideon Aremu, on July 1 at his Ibadan residence.

The governor assured the constituents of sustained infrastructural growth, describing the APC candidate as an accomplished lawyer and young politician, who would not disappoint them.

Ajimobi said: “It is logical and more profitable for the people to support the ruling party in any election to attract developmental projects from the federal and state governments. I, therefore, implore you to vote for our candidate to bring more development to Igboho and its environs.

“Majority of those in the opposition parties during the 2015 general elections are already with us (APC). For instance, former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, who used to be the leader of Labour Party in the state, is now with us along with his supporters.”

Ajimobi hails police over arrest of suspected killers of lawmaker

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has hailed the Police for their quick intervention in apprehending some suspected killers of the late member of House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu.

He spoke through a statement signed by Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism Mr. Toye Arulogun.

The governor lauded the police command for exhibiting professionalism, commitment and dedication to a crime-free society by tracking down the suspected culprits in the gruesome murder of the former Chairman, House Committee on Information.

He said the government saw this laudable development by the police as working in line with the Ajimobi administration’s zero tolerance for criminality and brigandage, which once marked out Oyo as a state of violence.

The combination of similar efforts by both the government and security agencies account for the reason Oyo State was not included in the state’s listed as unsafe for foreign nationals in Nigeria by the United States (U.S.) Department of State.

The commissioner reiterated the government’s readiness to support the police and other security agencies, assuring residents and citizens of the government’s zero tolerance for criminal and violent acts.

Ajimobi heads panel to screen APC aspirants

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi is to head a seven-man committee to screen All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants for the Ondo State governorship election primaries scheduled for August 27 in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Also, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Agunwa Anaekwe, is to head a three-man committee that will take appeals arising from the screening exercise.

Other members of the screening committee are Joe Igbokwe, Fatsuma Talba, Chief Felix Nwachukwu, Aminu Jacob Momoh, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar and Alhaji Umar Duhu, who will serve as secretary.

Members of the appeal committee are Sadiq Abdullahi and Dr. Bashiru Ajibola (secretary).

Inaugurating the committee, APC National Organising Secretary Senator Osita Izunaso urged the seven-member screening committee to carry out comprehensive due diligence of all documents submitted to the party by the aspirants.

He told the committee that, to qualify to contest the primary, aspirants must meet requirements contained in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the 2010 Electoral Act (as amended), the party’s constitution and the 2014 guidelines for the nomination of candidates for public offices.

He said: “The assignment of this committee is a very serious one. You are expected to look at the qualifications of the aspirants that have bought forms to contest for the Ondo State governorship on the platform of our party. Their qualification must be looked at in line with the 1999 Constitution and in line with our party’s guidelines as well.

“You must also make sure aspirants have paid the N5 million for the nomination form and N500,000 for the expression of interest form. There must be evidence of this payment.

“You must also look at the aspirant’s contribution to the party at ward, state and even at the national level. You must also look at their knowledge of the party’s manifesto.”

Ajimobi expressed confidence that the APC will win the governorship election and assured that all aspirants will be treated fairly and justly during the screening exercise.

He said: “It is indeed our pleasure, honour and privilege to be given this opportunity to serve our party, particularly on this onerous task of screening some of our members who are interested in becoming the governor of Ondo State.

“We are expected to be fair, just and ensure that those that we choose would definitely become the next governor. I believe once we are fair, once we look for quality, there is no doubt that we will win in Ondo State. As some of us are known as jinx breakers, anything we touch wins; this will not be an exception. Whoever we choose, I can guarantee, we will win.”
