Oyo to restructure 105,000 workforce, says Ajimobi

Oyo State is to restructure its 105,000 workforce and will not retrench as being speculated, Governor Abiola Ajimobi said yesterday.

Ajimobi, who clarified this in Ibadan, said restructuring of the workforce was aimed at enhancing its productivity.

He put the workforce at 105,000, saying many workers were unproductive.

Ajimobi said the restructuring would place each worker where he or she would be more productive.

“You know we have three types of workers. We have workers, who have the expertise and are ready to work. We have those without expertise, but are ready to learn and work. We also have those who don’t have the expertise and are not ready to work or learn.

“We want to ensure that every worker has something doing and doing well for government to justify his or her salary. Today, we need to drive our revenue to be self-sufficient,” he said.

He said restructuring was also reason for the government to strengthen its educational system, because development is knowledge-based.

Ajimobi said a knowledge-based economy produces development, stressing the need to develop pupils to be able to compete around the globe.

Quoting a philosopher, Ajimobi said: “If we keep doing same thing all the time, we will continue to have same result.”

The governor called on the workers to always embrace dialogue, saying the last strike drew the state backward.

“We told them all that is available to pay salaries, but they did not believe us. They embarked on the strike based on speculations that we were not sincere. Today, we have shown all to them and now they have seen that we are sincere and transparent on all we have told them.

“I pray that God rewards me based on my action towards the workers. If I lied to them, God will reward me and if I am sincere to them, God should continue to answer their prayers for me,” he said.

The governor solicited support for the state’s growth in the face of the economic downturn, saying his administration will continue to give its best.

Mrs. Lawal said it was high time the two parties returned to the negotiation table to safeguard the future of the pupils, whose continued stay at home could hamper their academic performance and future aspirations.

They pleaded with Ajimobi to be father to all stakeholders involved in the labour/government face-off, by forgiving whoever that might have wronged him.

They added that they have engaged the government over the salary issue, saying that the government explained the financial status to them.

The women said with the explanation, they knew that the governor meant well for the welfare of all.

The concerned mothers said the governor reiterated that he was not putting up public secondary schools for sale, contrary to the erroneous impression being peddled about by the opposition.

They added that they were happy that the governor himself said he knew the hardship being faced by his people and would never do anything to aggravate their economic status by imposing unhealthy policy in education or any sector in the state.

They described the agitation by the NLC over salary arrears as justifiable, but urged both parties to reason together and allow peace to reign in the interest of the larger masses.

Lawmaker’s killers will be arrested, says Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor Ajimobi has assured the people that the killers of a member of the House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu, will be arrested.

Speaking when he visited Aremu’s family home on Monday, Ajimobi decried that the incident had blotted the peace the state had boasted of recently.

Condoling with the deceased wife, Mrs. Bukola Aremu and children, Ajimobi assured them of his administration’s support.

“It was an untimely and tragic death that has disrupted the otherwise peaceful environment the state is proud of.

“You remember that since 2011, we have maintained peace. We have never had political assassinations. Even robbery, thuggery and brigandage reduced considerably. This is the first time in our government that we will have such a tragic event, particularly a member of the House of Assembly so callously murdered.

“We sympathise with the family and promise that not only shall we find the murderers, we will also ensure that wesupport the family. The children and wife are young. By the grace of God, whoever was responsible will be caught,” Ajimobi said.

Buhari prayed that God would grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

He urged security operatives to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter and arraignment of the killers.

    ‘Let’s support Ajimobi’s education initiative’

The proposed education policy of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s administration in Oyo State is the best in the face of the current downturn in education sector, a politician said yesterday.

Abolade Akanni, an engineer, spoke with reporters in Iseyin. He urged the private sector to key in into the Governor’s initiative.

Go around Nigeria, you will see that truly, the nation is passing through economic downturn which has affected education financing among other responsibilities of any democratic government, Akanni said.

He said: “Oyo State cannot perform any magic to do its constitutional duties and will not abdicate its responsibilities in providing quality education as well, it is left to the good people of the state to see the need to partner government in restoring the old legacies by doing their bits to support the state government.”

•Governor to striking workers: let’s dialogue

THOUSANDS of supporters of Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi yesterday stormed Ibadan, the state capital, to show their backing for his administration’s policies.

At a rally, which was attended by a mammoth crowd, the supporters called on workers to dialogue with the government in the ongoing impasse over non-payment of salaries.

This came as the governor waved an olive branch to the striking workers to come for dialogue, stressing that “it is an element of democracy”.

The supporters, numbering about 50,000, were made up of members of about 168 trade associations from the 33 local government areas of the state.

They gathered at the historic Mapo Hall as early as 9am, from where they moved  through the city, drumming support for the governor and his policies.

The supporters were made up of traders, market women, hair dressers, tailors, commercial drivers, auto technicians, shoe makers and Fuji musicians.

Others include association of farmers, butchers, food and fruits sellers, students and politicians.

As they moved through the popular Beere/Oje/Agodi Road, they were joined by other independent supporters.

Anchoring the achievements on enthronement of peace, the supporters called on residents and labour leaders to shun violence and any act that is detrimental to the state’s progress.

The crowd moved to Agodi from where they went to the state secretariat, where the governor addressed them.

As Ajimobi appeared, the crowd began to sing his praises with people gyrating to the tunes being  rendered by the Ibadan-based Fuji musician, Rashidi Ayinde.

Ajimobi was joined by his deputy, Chief Moses Alake-Adeyemo; the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mr. Olalekan Ali; his Chief of Staff (CoS) Dr. Gbade Ojo and other top government functionaries.

Taking their turn to address the crowd, leaders of five unions, including that of students, hailed Ajimobi for his efforts on restoring peace to the state.

They lauded his school management initiative, which had been misinterpreted as selling public schools.

The speakers stressed that they had sought facts about the initiative and found that that it was a good way to rescue dwindling standards in the public school system.

Speaking on behalf of canteen operators, Mrs. Iyadunni Lawal, who is the president of the association, said residents and voters are stakeholders in Oyo State.

She emphasised that the association was interested in peace and harmony between the government and workers.

The President, Marketing Advisory Council, Mrs. Labake Lawal, said:  “We are here today to assure all that Governor Ajimobi is not selling schools. We appeal to all workers not to inflict pains on us. Sit down with the government and find a peaceful solution.

“Traders and all of us in Oyo State are feeling the negative impact of non-payment of salaries. We are recording low sales. So, both parties need to sit together and dialogue on all grey areas to come up with an amicable solution.

“We also want to affirm that all market women are solidly behind Governor Ajimobi.

The students’ leader said they were happy to be part of the solidarity rally for Ajimobi because his administration brought an end to violence against students.

He noted the incident of June 5, 2011, when some students were murdered by hoodlums at the Iwo Road interchange.

The Ajimobi administration, according to him, has since stopped violence among commercial drivers and the city of Ibadan has known peace.

Other leaders of the associations also called for understanding on the school management initiative. They urged the two parties  to come to a truce.

Addressing the crowd, an elated Ajimobi explained that he was committed to his campaign promises.

As a way of initiating a discussion process, the governor said the government invited labour leaders as stakeholders to the first meeting, but that some of them chose to disrupt the meeting violently.

Ajimobi vowed to sustain his administration’s achievement on peace and emphasised that he would keep encouraging every democratic means of governing the state.

He blamed the opposition for sponsoring lies against him on the initiative and condemned teachers for setting children on the streets to start destroying public property.

His words: “When we campaigned, we made promises. We stand by those promises. Those sponsoring disharmony are the opposition elements. We promised to run an all-inclusive government. When we discovered that our schools were not doing well, we organised education summit in 2012 and certain recommendations were made.

“Democracy is about thinking together and hence, we invited all stakeholders to a meeting. But some labour leaders gathered and disrupted the meeting. The violence we had stamped out was what they brought back again and we won’t let that be.

“If anybody opposes any policy, you complain through proper channel.

“Yet, we are not fighting with workers because they never supported those leaders who employed violence. Why should anyone fight over planned policies?”
