Ikhana begs Ajimobi over 3SC players’ 5-month unpaid salaries

Coach Kadiri Ikhana of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan on Saturday appealed to the Oyo State Government to pay the club’s players their outstanding five-month salaries.

Ikhana said his players had been honouring their league matches discontented, hungry and unhappy, adding that they could only play well if they ate well.

“It has been tough for the team recently, especially when we have to play eight matches in 16 days. Now we are going on a long journey to play against

Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars. The players have been going out there to play matches on empty stomachs and I am appealing to the government to do more on the unpaid salaries,’’ he said.

Ikhana told newsmen in Ibadan, after his team defeated visiting Heartland Football Club of Owerri 2-1, that his players’ morale was down as a result of the situation.

Meanwhile, coach Alphonsus Dike of Heartland FC has described his team’s loss to 3SC as unfortunate, adding that they lost it in their defence. He however alleged that there was a general distraction for his team in the game from the spectators, which he said “was unruly and uncalled for’’.

Dike said his team would now have to return to base and strategise on how to win their remaining matches.

Ajimobi to workers: no pay if you go on strike

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has said he is not fazed by the strike threat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), vowing that any worker who goes on strike will not be paid.

He promised not to review the 90 per cent income dedicated for the payment of workers salary from the Federation Account.

The governor said the call by the NLC to add the Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) with the 90 per cent income from the Federation Account to pay the workers will not be possible at the moment.

Ajimobi spoke yesterday at the stakeholders meeting between the government, 33 Caretaker Chairmen and traditional rulers on the economic diversification project held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan.

The governor said: “It was agreed that about 90 per cent of income accruing from the state’s monthly allocation from the Federation Account should be dedicated to the workers. The balance of ten per cent would be deployed to the running of other aspects of governance.”

He noted that till date, the government has not reneged on the agreement, adding that the ultimatum issued by Labour is not only surprising but unnecessary and uncalled-for in the prevailing circumstances.

According to him, government cannot pay 62,000 workers with the money that ought to be used to maintain over 10 million citizens.

His words: “Modern day labour union and government relationship has listed steps that must be taken. Step one is if you have any concern about anything, there is a joint negotiation committee that is made up of government and workers, you first go there to discuss with them.

“If after the discussion it does not work then you can go to the next level where the head of service and government will now appoint some people to discuss. It is when negotiations have broken down that labour can give notice of strike and not this old time labour government relationship where without discussing you will issue ultimatum to go on strike.

“It is illegal because this is a government where law must be followed and obeyed, not this culture of impunity. It is wrong to give an ultimatum to go on strike without reaching a consensus with the government.

“We have an agreement, there was a time we use to get close to N5 billion from the Federal Government and our IGR was like N1 billion, now everybody is aware of the situation, and now we are having N2 billion plus from Federal Government.”

He urged the labour leaders to negotiate with the government, vowing that any worker who goes on strike without following due process will not be paid.

Speaking on the need for agrarian revolution, Ajimobi said the state is blessed with 28,544 kilometre per square of land, adding that the state has the most fertile land in Southern Nigeria.

He said:” The only way out of the present economic meltdown in the state is through agricultural revolution and that is why we need the support of traditional rulers, local government chairmen and all the citizens. We shall embark on massive mechanised farming in 28 local government areas.

The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, appealed to labour leaders not to embark on strike “but should be considerate and embrace the government’s conditions”.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, said: “The government has tried his best allocating 90 per cent of the federal allocation to pay the worker’s salary. The labour leaders only need to be patient and considerate.”

  • Easter: Hard work, sacrifice will see Nigeria through, says Ajimobi

Nigeria is capable of overcoming the current economic precipice through selflessness, hard work and patriotism irrespective of social stratification, Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has stated.

In an Easter message by his Special Adviser, Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka, the governor said these were the sterling attributes that distinguished Jesus Christ for which his death and resurrection had become an annual celebration among the Christians.

The governor felicitated with the people, particularly Christians, on the occasion of this year’s Easter, a period he said was meant for sacrifice and forgiveness as exemplified by the life and times of Jesus Christ.

Harping on hard work, the governor said that no country could survive if its working-age population relies heavily on the government for survival instead of getting actively engaged in profitable ventures to eke out a living.

Ajimobi urged citizens of the state, particularly those in the public service to be more dedicated and committed to the vision of his administration towards reinventing the state economy through the agriculture value chain.

In the spirit of collective responsibility, the governor said that citizens of the state should make sacrifices and be prepared to embrace and contribute to the programmes, policies and activities of the government as they unfold.

Ajimobi said: “We can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. This is the time for us to start breaking the eggs. Without pains, there will be no gains.

“The Bible even supports this by saying that ‘in all labour there is profit but mere talk leads only to poverty.

“The current economic situation does not provide room for laggards and lazy ones. You must sacrifice your time and enjoyment in order for this state and the country to move forward.”

“We should remember that the progenitor of the Christian faith is also known as the ‘Prince of Peace’ and we should, therefore, embrace peace with all men and maintain the peace which we have enjoyed in the state in the past years.

“As we celebrate, we should not forget to extend a hand of fellowship to the less-privileged among us, as Christ taught us to ‘love our neighbours as our ourselves.’”

Ondo State: Governor Olusegun Mimiko called for sustained prayers, sacrifice, cooperation and understanding from the governed to enable government serve them better in the face of current economic reality.

Mimiko, in his message, said the occasion should not be seen as a period of winning and dinning alone, adding that it is a period for sober reflection.

He challenged the people to be more prayerful  than before and implored them  to assist the government by making more sacrifice.

Plateau State: Governor Simon Bako Lalong enjoined Christian faithful to use the period to reflect on Christ’s sacrificial work of redemption on the Cross of Calvary.

    •‘No tenure extension for ‘caretakers’

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has said there will be no tenure extension for the 33 caretaker chairmen.

He said after the expiration of their four-month tenure, the government will conduct local government elections.

The governor, who spoke at the swearing in yesterday, added that he will not impose any candidate or interfere with the polls.

He admonished them to shun extravagant lifestyle, insisting that their tenure was not to commit resources to naming, burial and marriage ceremonies at the expense of grassroots development.

Ajimobi said commonsense dictates that the lean resources accruable to the state and local governments should be committed to people-oriented and legacy projects.

He said: “Your appointment is an opportunity for you to dare and endure; not for ease and comfort. I enjoin you to be guided by the oath of office you just took; have the fear of God in whatever you do. If you fear God, you will not commit atrocities.

“Please note that nothing will keep you in office beyond four months, as we will be going hold elections immediately. Therefore, use this opportunity to cooperate with us to develop this state. Don’t betray the confidence reposed in you.

“I must warn that if you under-perform, you will not even last four months because when you fail, I fail; when you fail, we all fail. But I won’t allow you to fail me.

“You are not elected to service naming ceremonies, marriages and burials. We can’t continue with this retrogressive attitude and expect any meaningful development in our local governments.

“There will be primaries after your tenure and only performers will be able to win the party ticket to contest for the election.”

Ajimobi urged the council chairmen to engage unemployed youths in agriculture, adding that the state is blessed with arable land that does not need irrigation.

He admonished the people against piling pressure on the chairmen for personal favour or seeing them as philanthropists or Father Christmas.

The governor urged the people to change their attitude of seeing council chairmen as Automated Teller Machines (ATM), recommending a change of attitude.

“If you perform well, you have the opportunity to emerge as candidates from your local governments after your four-month tenure. We will not handpick or impose any candidate on the people.

“That era is gone for good. No godfather will assist you to win ticket. I will even advise you against the idea of godfather because they will always ask for more.

“Quality service is what will assist you to win the people’s confidence. It is also the one that will assist our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rule Oyo State for a very long time.  Therefore, let the people feel your impact,’’ he said.

Niyi Adeagbo of Itesiwaju Local Government and Saheed Alaran of Iseyin Local Government, who spoke on behalf of their colleagues, promised to render selfless service.

    New Olubadan wants Ibadan State

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, on Friday promised to overhaul the chieftaincy institution in Ibadanland.

This, he said, will ensure speedy completion of appointment procedures and ensure the insulation of high chiefs from partisan politics as the father of all.

Governor Ajimobi spoke at the coronation ceremony of the 41st of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji (Aje Ogungunniso 1)‎ at the Historic Mapo Hall.

He said, “Since royalty is service, the Oba is expected to be above board and become a rallying point for all citizens.

“He is the ruler of Ibadanland and symbol of Unity and final say on customary matters. The Olubadan is faced with the task of building peace.”

Presenting the certificate of office to the monarch, Ajimobi reminded the gathering that nobody can be qualified to be Olubadan if he is found to suffer from physical infirmity or declared to be a lunatic or unsound mind.

The Governor, who spoke on the legal tussle between the Seriki Chiefs and the kingmakers, noted that the chiefs law regulating the succession to the stool of Olubadan recognizes rotation to the stool between the Otun and Balogun lines, noting that the ascension to the throne is “strictly rotational.”

“The Choice of the new Olubadan from the Balogun line is customary, traditional, legal and satisfied all legal provisions without legal incumberances. The council having presented him, I now approve this appointment. He is now the 41st Olubadan of Ibadanland. He is a famous business tycoon and music recording guru. He has discovered many talents across the music world.”

In his address, the new Olubadan asked for the creation of Ibadan International airport and Ibadan State.

The monarch said, “I beg Bola Tinubu as a key personality in this government to assist us in this regard.”
