    Akeredolu: change is here

Change is here, says Akeredolu as INEC declares him winner

Ondo State Governor-elect Oluwarotimi Akeredolu yesterday promised not to fail the people when he assumes office on February 24.

Akeredolu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the pledge in his acceptance speech read at his home in Owo amid jubilation after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him winner of Saturday’s election.

Returning Officer and University of Ilorin Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdul-Ganiyu Ambali, who announced the result around 1.20pm, said Akeredolu polled 244, 842 votes to beat Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Eyitayo Jegede with 150, 380 votes and Alliance for Democracy (AD) candidate Olusola Oke, who scored 126, 889.

APC won in 14 Local Government Areas. AD won in two (Ilaje and Okitipupa) and PDP in Ondo East and Ondo West councils.

The APC won in Akure North, Akure South, Ile Oluji/Oke-Igbo,

Ifedore, Ose, Akoko South West, Akoko South East, Akoko North East,

Akoko North West, Owo, Idanre, Irele, Ese-Odo and Odigbo Local Government Areas.

The Returning Officer said of the 1, 647, 973 total registered voters, only 584, 997 were accredited. There were 551,272 valid votes and 29, 615 votes were rejected.

“Having polled the highest number of votes and having satisfied all requirements, I hereby declare Oluwarotmi Akeredolu the governor-elect of Ondo State,” Ambali said.

Akeredolu praised President Muhammadu Buhari “our national leader” and the “principled” National Chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).of the party.

He said: “I wish to express my profound gratitude, first, to the Almighty God whose infinite grace has allowed us to see this day.

”This victory is of God through the people. It is not for me or the APC alone; it is a victory for the people of Ondo State, irrespective of which side of the divide you stood during the election. For me, it is a challenge to perform. It is a call to rescue our state and reverse it fortunes.

”I thank the people of my dear state for their steadfastness. I have heard their messages throughout the campaign to all the nooks and crannies of the state. Today, you have spoken with one voice. You have walked your talk. You have voted for me as your governor for the next four years.

”Today, change has come. I hereby make a solemn pledge that this collective mandate shall address all issues with keen determination. The welfare of our people alone shall be the directive policy of the government.

Today’s victory is a confirmation of the willingness and readiness of the people of Ondo State to change and seek a better life. I thank you for your faith and confidence in me. I thank all those whose uncommon sacrifice, contributed in no small measure to the success of the exercise. A special show of gratitude must be extended to our security agents for their patriotic duty.

”I shall in few months be saddled with the task of providing responsible leadership, a leadership that would take our people from poverty and stagnation to productivity and prosperity, from pains and lamentation to joy and laughter.

”It is the sole reason you have voted for me and by the grace of God I will not fail you.

”There was jubilation in many parts of the state, especially in Akure and Owo. Members of the APC trooped out to celebrate Akeredolu’s victory. Most of them held brooms and danced round major streets, singing.

Many also converged on the party’s secretariat on Oba Adesida Road and at the Akeredolu campaign office at Oyemekun Road, where they sang and danced.

Residents of Owo took to the streets to celebrate the coming of another indigene as governor.Second Republic Governor of the old Ondo State, the late Chief Adekunle Adekunle Ajasin,  hailed from the ancient town. Many APC chiefs besieged Akeredolu’s residence to celebrate with him, among them Senator Tayo Alasoadura, Victor Olambitan, Tola Oworh, Gbenga Adefarati, Olalekan Odere, Wale Akinterinwa, Femi Agagu, Olayemi Omosuyi, Timileyin Adelegbe, Ifedayo Abegunde, Yemi Olowolabi, Saka Yusuf, among others.

Also in Owo yesterday was Minister of Mines and Steel Dr. Kayoode FayemiImmediately, the result was announced, Akeredolu in a convoy joined his kinsmen, who were already jubilating. They moved from Akeredolu’s residence at the Government Reserved Area (GRA), through Fajuyi Road to Ehinogbe, Iloro and ended it at the Palace of Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi III.

Members of the Boys Brigade were also in the party.

Akededolu’s agent Dr Benson Enikuomehin,  said the election was free and fair.

”The result of the election showed that people are against Mimiko and his government. From the result, we could see that in Akure where the PDP candidate comes from, the party lost. Even in Mimiko’s hometown, the PDP won with a slight margin. This is to tell you that the people of Ondo State are tired of Mimiko and his hegemony,” he said.

But Jegede’s agent,  Mr. Ayo Fadaka, said INEC was too hasty in conducting the election. According to him, the election was conducted less than 48 hours after Jegede was declared the PDP candidate.

Fadaka alleged that “some individuals were used to truncate the future of the people of Ondo State by teaming up to work against the common interest of the people.”

“They came to Ondo to work against us and eventually gave our government to the APC.”

He said Jegede and the party would consult widely and decide on the next step to take, adding that “for now, we have not decided on what to do as a political party, but as time goes on, we shall take appropriate action.”

”INEC collaborated with the judiciary to deprive the good people of Ondo State good government, which the Olusegun Mimiko administration has ensured in the last eight years. Knowing full well that the electoral body has up to January, next year to organise the election, INEC still went ahead to conduct the election despiteunfavourable conditions,” Fadaka said.

  • Ondo 2016: Factors that aided Akeredolu’s victory

Ondo 2016: Factors that aided Akeredolu’s victory

It is no longer news that All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Oluroritmi Akeredolu is Ondo State governor-elect. What is news is how the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) proved bookmakers wrong to spring surprise in the Sunshine State. Deputy News Editor BUNMI OGUNMODEDE writes on the forces that paved the way for the one-time Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president.

Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State has been won and lost. Strangely, the results proved all bookmakers wrong. The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Olurotimi Akeredolu (SAN), beat two other major contenders, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

Akeredolu, who ==analysts described as the  political underdog, sprang a surprise, winning in 14 out of the 18 local government areas with 244, 842 votes to beat PDP’s Jegede to the second position with 150, 380 and Oke with 126, 889 votes.

The APC flag bearer did not win all the six council areas in his North Senatorial District but took the battle to Jegede in his Central Senatorial base and won in five of the seven local government areas. In Oke’s South Senatorial District, Akeredolu won in three of the five council areas.

The results have shown that certain undercurrents guided the election to prove bookmakers wrong and assert the supremacy of the electorate. Some of the forces that aided the victory of the APC candidate are:

    The party platforms

    PDP crisis

The ruling party was crisis-ridden in the run-up to the poll. Jegede, who eventually flew its ticket at the election, was restored on the ballot two days to the election. He was in the limbo for more than a month after a Federal High Court ruling gave the ticket to Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the party. Jegede, a preferred candidate of incumbent Governor Olusegun Mimiko, is of the Ahmed Markafi faction. Since Ibrahim is of the other faction, the governor, who has a hold on the PDP structure and resources in the state stayed away for as long as Ibrahim was on the ballot.

In Rivers State when a similar scenario played out in 2007, the party supported Celestine Omehia during the campaigns. Omehia won the election but lost the seat to Rotimi Amaechi who approached the court for what he called illegal substitution by the PDP leadership as the candidate. That was not the case in the Sunshine State. The mainstream PDP distanced itself from the Ibrahim campaigns.

The former PDD candidate’s involvement was to stop Mimiko from relinquishing office to a lackey in Jegede. According to him, Jegede’s victory would mean a third term for the incumbent who will complete a two-term in office next February.

Those who accused Ibrahim of playing a spoiler’s role may be right after all. He was alleged to have congratulated Akeredolu immediately after voting closed in the polling units across the state on Saturday and even when INEC was yet to collate and compute the results from the local government areas. Ibrahim’s accusers said the results have foreclosed his plan to appeal his removal as the PDP’s candidate last week Thursday.

“He has succeeded in removing Mimiko from office. He was never a serious candidate. Let’s wait and see if he will still push his appeal. You remember that even on the eve of the election, he told his supporters that he remained the party’s candidate,” an analyst said yesterday.

    AD

The AD, the platform on which Oke contested, was moribund before its flag bearer defected from the APC in the aftermath of the controversial shadow poll. Although Oke succeeded in reactivating the platform, time was definitely not on his side to establish structures that could have been formidable enough to win a statewide election. Many lauded Oke’s performance on the AD platform, which they say he borrowed to cotest the election. They attribute Oke’s performance to experience.

    The APC

Despite the controversial governorship primary, the APC has become a formidable party and an alternative to the ruling PDP in the state. Ahead of the poll, the APC was the nest of every aggrieved PDP member. Former Deputy Governor Alhaji Olanusi Ali joined the APC after he parted ways with Mimiko.

It was believed that whoever got the APC ticket would likely dislodge the ruling party from the Alagbaka Government House.

    The Mimiko factor

Not a few believe that the people voted against Mimiko in protest and to stop what they claim to be the extension of his eight-year administration. The governor, they say, squandered the goodwill freely given to him in 2007 and 2012 on the platform of the Labour Party.

The people, it was learnt, are not happy with the governor in his handling of state affairs.

“Mimiko rode to power because the civil servants and organised labour supported him in 2007 and 2012. But, he has not reciprocated the goodwill. The workers have not been paid for six months. He was playing on the intelligent of the workers by urging them to vote for his preferred candidate, promising to clear the arrears of their salaries this week”, a stakeholder in the state said.

Like Ibrahim, the stakeholder said a victory for Jegede would have been tenure elongation for Mimiko.

    Jegede not independent

The PDP flag bearer is seen as a politician tied to his godfather’s apron string. Critics see him a man who lacks the right political initiative to lead a state as sophisticated as Ondo.

According to investigations, Jegede has no structure outside of Mimiko’s. He allegedly went to sleep for more than a month only to be pushing for a postponement of the election when his name was restored on the ballot by INEC on the orders of a Court of Appeal.

“It was political suicide for Jegede to have relied solely on Mimiko’s incumbency,” an analyst said. The analyst alluded to the late Chuba Okadigbo’s description of incumbency as a double-edged sword which could either be an asset or a liability. “In the case of the Ondo governorship election, Mimiko’s incumbency has turned out as liability for Jegede”, the analyst said.

    Cash-for-votes

This factor has been dismissed as a non-issue in the Ondo election as all the parties freely deployed money to woo voters. Besides, elections in the country have always been heavily monetised. So, it is wrong of any party to accuse the other of buying votes. They all used money,” a source told The Nation.

    Federal might

This factor cannot be ruled out. An analyst said: “It would be miscalculation for people to think that President Muhammadu Buhari would be indifferent to political developments in any part of the country. You remember he was in Akure personally to campaign. Besides, his aides issued a statement in Abuja a day to the election urging the people to vote the APC.

“Even if the President was neutral, the APC as the ruling party at the central cannot afford to sit on the fence. Mimiko was a beneficiary of federal power in 2012 when he was returned to office on the Labour Party (LP) platform.

The administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan backed him against Oke, who was then the PDP flag bearer. The deal was that Mimiko would defect to the PDP after winning the election. In Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi was the first to lose election under the APC ticket in 2014 because the PDP candidate, Ayodele Fayose, enjoyed federal backing.”

Those defending the deployment of federal might, said a loss for Akeredolu in last Saturday’s poll would have been a vote of no confidence on the President and the APC. Besides, it would also have created problem for the 2019 project of the ruling party.

    Sophistication of the electorate

By pitching their tent with Akeredolu, the voters in Ondo State showed their political sophistication. The people are unhappy that Ondo, an oil-producing state, has been finding it difficult to fulfil its statury obligations to workers.

According to them, using the dwindling allocations from the Federation Account as reason for not paying worker’s salaries was not enough, more so, when neighbouring Edo State was meeting its obligations under former Governor Adams Oshiohmole.

    The Smart Card Reader

The use of the Smart Card Reader (SCR) for electronic accreditation of voters by INEC frustrated any plan to manipulate the electoral process. As predicted in an analysis in The Nation of last Friday, voter turnout was low when compared with the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) distributed by the electoral umpire. Ordinarily, the introduction of voting immediately after accreditation should have encouraged voter accreditation. But one thing that the INEC has achieved with the new system is the elimination of multiple voting.

A break from the old order

The election of Akeredolu has opened a new chapter in the Sunshine State. The electorate have shown that they need a break from politicians who have links with the Alagbaka establishment.

Though Akeredolu once served as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, it was under a military setting. The gate to the Alagbaka Government House has been shot against those with tainted relationship with power since the country returned to participatory democracy 17 years ago.

As the governor-elect, all eyes would now be on Akeredolu and the expectation of the electorate who overwhelmingly voted for him is no doubt high. Having contested four years ago on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and lost, he is expected to hit the ground running when he formally takes the driver’s seat in February next year.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi,  said the people made the right choice.

Fayemi described Akeredolu’s triumph as a victory for democracy.

The minister said the people have demonstrated their preference for transformative leadership and progressive governance ,which Akeredolu represents.

In a statement by its Chairman, Olawale Oshun, ARG  praised Akeredolu and other candidates for pursuing their ambitions within the ambit of the rule of law.

  • D-Day in Ondo: Oke, Jegede, Akeredolu in final battle

D-Day in Ondo: Oke, Jegede, Akeredolu in final battle

The die, at last, is cast. Today’s governorship election in Ondo State promises to be a tough battle. As things stand at the moment, it is a three-horse race between Mr. Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Mr. Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this report, Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI looks at the chances of the three main candidates.

Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has been in festive mood since the Court of Appeal ruling which on Wednesday reinstated Mr. Eyitayo Jegede as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for today’s governorship election in the state. Up until Thursday, the last day allowed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for campaign, there were wild jubilations in Akure and its environs by long processions of supporters of the PDP candidate.

The development is understandable. Jegede is a native of Akure, and the entire Akure Division of the defunct Western Region is united in their bid to support the aspiration of their son as the next governor of the state. A similar atmosphere also prevailed in Ondo town where the incumbent Governor Olusegun Mimiko hails from.

The joy of the people of Ondo Central Senatorial District generally is an indication that the calculations for today’s election has changed indeed. Before Wednesday’s ruling, the calculations were that the election was going to be a two-horse race between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Alliance for Democracy (AD). The dispute over the PDP ticket was believed to have decimated the party’s chances as the candidacy of the party’s former flag bearer, Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, was widely perceived as a joke. However, observers believe that with the return of Jegede’s name on INEC’s list of candidates, the PDP also stands the chance of winning the election.

The dispute between Ibrahim, who is the candidate of the Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction, and Jegede, the preferred candidate of the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction, had preoccupied the two factions and prevented them from campaigning. With the latest development, however, the battle for Governor Mimiko’s seat has become a three-horse race.

    Hope restored for Jegede

Like a home team that scored an equalizing goal late in a game of football, supporters of the PDP candidate appear determined to back him today at the polls. But the campaign of the other candidates had gathered momentum in the space of time that Ibrahim was recognised as the PDP flag bearer, and this may have dire consequences for Jegede. Against this background, the Jegede camp campaigned vigorously for postponement of the election.

In the mean time, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC and Mr. Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) have returned to the drawing board with the return of Jegede on INEC’s list of candidates. The initial exclusion of Jegede from the race had made Ondo Central a battleground for the two candidates.

With the latest turn of events, the PDP candidate will be looking to gain massive support from Ondo Central, which has the largest number of registered voters in the state. As the wild jubilations suggest, Akure North and Akure South indigenes are united by the ‘Akure Agenda’ and so will probably back Jegede in their numbers.

The PDP is also expected to do well in Ondo, owing to the influence of the governor. Thus, the party may dominate the ballot in Ondo East and Ondo West councils. Mimiko has ensured that the local government areas benefitted from some developmental projects.

However, the three parties  AD, APC and PDP  will lock horns in Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo. In Idanre/Ifedore Local Government Area, which is another stronghold of the PDP, Mimiko is popular. He has never lost any electoral battle there since 2007. In the last few weeks, the people had grown weary, thinking that the PDP had no acceptable candidate. Apathy was predicted by analysts. But Jegede’s reinstatement may have cleared the coast for the PDP in the local government area.

    Odd against Jegede

While the ‘Akure Agenda’ may work in favour of Jegede in Ondo Central, Governor Mimiko’s truncation of the zoning arrangement may hurt the PDP candidate’s chances in the other zones, because it is in conflict with the party’s rotational principle. According to the zoning principle, the slot ought to belong to Ondo North even though some interest groups are insisting that it should go to the Ondo South senatorial district.

Incumbent Governor Mimiko, whose second term will expire in January next year, is from Ondo Kingdom in Ondo Central. Akure, which is now jostling for the slot, is also in the Central District. So, people from the other zones perceive the insistence on the ‘Akure Agenda’ as a discrimination against their zones and would naturally back candidates from their zone, irrespective of party affiliation. Besides, the temporary legal setback has taken a toll on the party.  The PDP is trailing other parties in mobilisation and campaigns. No serious voter education was done by the party during the period of tribulation.

    Oke’s popularity soars

At the beginning, Oke was not considered a frontline candidate and possible winner of the election. But with crises rocking the PDP and the APC, he emerged as the candidate to beat in today’s three-horse race involving his party, the APC and the PDP.

With the hullabaloo that greeted the APC’s September 3 primary, which was marred with allegations of fraud and the inability of the party’s leadership to resolve the issue amicably, the party is also going into the election as a divided house. The APC crisis is one of the factors working in the AD candidate’s favour. Though other major contenders, particularly Dr. Olusegun Abraham and Senator Ajayi Boroffice, elected to remain in the fold, the disagreement over the outcome of the primary has cast a long shadow on the campaign for the election.

With this state of affairs, all eyes are on the AD and its governorship candidate, to reap from the division in APC and PDP. Indeed, Oke’s candidacy appears to have injected live into the hitherto comatose party. Almost overnight, a party that had been comatose received a breath of life and its popularity has continued to soar by the day.

The Akoko region will be a major battleground for the candidates, particularly Oke and Akeredolu. Akeredolu is from Owo, which is part of Ondo North, and represents the best chance of the zone to occupy the Alagbaka Government House this time around. But proponents of power shift from Akoko may not buy into the quest of the APC candidate to govern the state, because he also represents the ‘Owo Agenda’.

There are a number of candidates from Akoko, but they are contesting on the platform of fringe parties and therefore do not stand much chance of making an appreciable impact in the race generally. The biggest of such candidates perhaps is Dr. Olu Agunloye, who is contesting on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). There is also Mr. Ola Amuda from Ogbagi-Akoko, in Akoko Northwest, who is contesting on the platform of the Accord Party (AP); and Mr. Bola Aidi from Akoko Northeast, who is flying the flag of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). They will get some votes in Akoko, but they do not seem to have what it takes to attract votes in other zones.

For the Akoko people, the Olusola Oke/Gani Dauda ticket on the platform of AD perhaps represents the region’s best chance for now. This is because the AD platform has become formidable since Oke joined the party after the controversial APC primary of September 3. Dauda is from Akoko Northwest. He is a grassroots politician and he has represented the constituency in the House of Representatives.

Since there was no reconciliation, following the disputed APC primary, aggrieved governorship aspirants within the party may not be inclined to mobilise their supporters to vote for its candidate. Abraham, who hails from the council, is still challenging Akeredolu’s victory at the primary. Abraham reportedly advised his supporters to vote their conscience: a statement interpreted as a subtle way of saying that he is not a bona fide supporter of Akeredolu’s aspiration.

Many community leaders are not happy with the APC, because, in their view, the Akoko aspirants were ‘edged’ out from the selection process to pave the way for an aspirant from Owo. So, based on that Oke has an edge over the APC candidate, as far as Akoko is concerned. Nevertheless, the presence of some party followers who cannot easily switch allegiance is a saving grace for Akeredolu.

In Ondo Central, the AD candidate also worked tirelessly to secure the support of segments of the electorate. A number of his lieutenants are from the zone. For instance, the Director-General of his campaign organisation, Mr. Bola Ilori, is from Ondo. There is also Otunba Omoniyi Omodara, a former Commissioner for Transport, who is from Akure North, and former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Kenneth Olawale, who is also from Akure North.

There is no doubt that Oke will sweep the polls in his constituency, Ondo South. Observers say Oke has what it takes to win the Ondo election. Such observers point to the fact that he has over 31 years of experience in politics and that he is a grassroots politician that has remained at home, unlike Akeredolu and Jegede. Akeredolu, they say, is based in Ibadan, while Jegede was based in Adamawa State before his emergence as a commissioner under Mimiko about seven and a half years ago.

When Oke joined the APC shortly after last year’s presidential election, he brought glamour to the party. He proved himself to be an astute politician. The legal practitioner did not come to the APC alone; he joined the fold with a galaxy of his political associates and many former top government functionaries. The political structure he built across the 18 local government areas during the 2012 election, when he flew the flag of the PDP, is still intact. With his humility and generosity, he has garnered more support from wards, local governments and at the state level.

In the course of this campaign, he has traversed the nooks and crannies of the state, trying to consolidate on the structure he built in 2012 and also break new grounds. Oke is believed to be one of the closest lieutenants of the late Governor Olusegun Agagu. Having paid his dues, he is seen as the most experienced of those contesting the position.

Oke is believed to be an astute and highly generous politician with a network across the three senatorial districts of the state and immense national recognition.

Against all odds, Oke came second, behind Governor Mimiko in the 2012 governorship election. This came at a time when the PDP was being treated like a leper in the state, coupled with the fact that the incumbent governor’s popularity was at its peak. He won in Ilaje-Ese Odo and Okitipupa local governments. This underscored his acceptability and deft political move.

The AD candidate said during Monday’s debate that he left the APC because it had not been able to meet its promises of fighting internal corruption in the party’s primary election. “I cannot be part of that deception,” he added. He said his mission was to create wealth by exploring the mineral and human resources, introduce transparency and create jobs.

Speaking on Oke, a former Commissioner for Transport, Otunba Omoniyi Omodara, who is an ardent supporter of the AD governorship candidate, said: “I have known Chief Oke for close to two decades now, specifically when I served as a commissioner under him, when he was the Chairman, OSOPADEC.”

According to him, during this period, Oke displayed rare exemplary leadership qualities. Omodara said: “Oke is a detribalised person, a team player, selfless and focused. He is the best for Ondo State at this particular time because he knows this state more than others.”

The former commissioner added: “Oke has lived with Ondo residents unlike the imported candidates and surrogates parading the streets as governorship candidates. He has been tested and found okay. In essence, Oke is okay”

But one of the odds facing the AD candidate is the Mimiko factor. With the return of Jegede’s name on INEC list, observers say the outgoing governor would do everything within his power to win the contest for his protege.

    Akeredolu restrategises

For today’s governorship election, Akeredolu is expected to compete well, partiularly in his constituency. Unlike the 2012 poll, the people of Owo are more passionate about Akeredolu’s bid this time around. Many eminent indigenes are rooting for him because they see the election as a personal battle. Thus, he is expected to win in Owo.

The people of the neighbouring Ose Local Government Area have always voted for progressives in past elections and may still vote for the APC in this election.

Akeredolu also has fans in Akoko Southwest. Four years ago, he had an impressive showing there at the close of poll. His structure is solid in the council. His campaign director, Victor Olabimtan, has been combing up the area, selling his candidature. The influence of the PDP cannot be dismissed with a wave of the hand, nevertheless, because the party has elected local government officials in the area.

Akeredolu and Oke have fanatical supporters in Akoko Southeast. But Oke got more votes than the APC candidate in the area in 2012. Besides, Oke may have an upper hand this time, because he picked his running mate from Akoko.

Before the APC primary, Akoko Northeast was the stronghold of the APC. Abraham hails from Ikare-Akoko, headquarters of the council. There is bitterness against the APC over the improper resolution of the primary’s crisis. If Abraham’s supporters team up with Oke, the APC may not be able to make an in-road.

In spite of the controversies surrounding his emergence as the governorship candidate of the APC, Akeredolu has not relented in his efforts to win today’s election. Some of his colleagues with whom he contested the governorship primary on September 3, 2016, alleged malpractices in the exercise and distanced themselves from the APC campaign activities.

The major odd against Akeredolu is his inability to reconcile with the major opponents in the controversial primary where he emerged as the party’s flag bearer. But, Akeredolu’s supporters are quick to add that other defeated aspirants are working for him. They include: Senator Tayo Alasoadura, Alhaji Jamiu Ekungba, Mrs Jumoke Anifowose, Dr Tunji Abayomi, Chief Victor Olabimtan, Prince Ademola Adegoroye and Olatunji Ariyomo.

For instance, Ariyomo, an engineer, is sure that Akeredolu would sail through today. He said: “Our candidate, Barrister Rotimi Akeredolu, is is the next governor of Ondo State. We have looked at the arithmetic and the dynamics of the 2016. The suffering masses, who are tired of career politicians, will vote for Akeredolu. And of the lot in the field, Akeredolu is the only one that can be described as truly independent.”

He said supporters of Akeredolu within and outside the state are his peers; people who believe in his capacity to deliver.

He added: “I must be frank, I don’t want another professional politician as governor of Ondo State. Professional politicians will smooth-talk you and rob you as we are presently experiencing in Ondo State.”

On why residents of Akure and Ondo Central District in general should cast their votes for Akeredolu, Ariyomo said the think-thank caucus within the APC has come up

with multi-billion dollar scheme mainly for Akure metropolitan area, with outposts to be fixed in Igbokoda, Okitipupa, Ore, Owo, Ondo and Ikare. He said: “But we can only implement this if we vote an APC governor on Saturday (today). We have embedded power generation systems planned for Akure metropolis to end years of epileptic power supply in all parts of Akure. “We can never achieve this under folks who prioritised investment of nearly N11 billion in the building of a fanciful event centre over electricity.

Neither can we ever achieve that under a governor whose psyche has been wired to see such as a federal government job,” he stated. According to observers, the biggest advantage Akeredolu has in this contest is the federal might that is backing him. President Muhammadu Buhari threw his weight behind the APC candidate last week Thursday, when he stormed Akure, the state capital, for the flag-off of the party’s campaign. Speaking at the mega rally, President Buhari pleaded with the people of Ondo to vote for the APC candidate, saying that the primary that produced Akeredolu as the APC flag bearer was transparent. He said: “I am very pleased that those of you who lost the primary are still very much in the party.

That you lose elections doesn’t mean you should walk away; you keep on trying. “I went to the Supreme Court three times in my bid to become the President of Nigeria. I like your high spirit and your commitment to the party, and I hope your constituencies are taking note of that.” The President was accompanied by the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki; APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and several APC governors and ministers. But, it remains to be seen how far the Federal Government’s backing will go in winning the election.

One thing that is certain is that the return of Jegede’s name on INEC’s list is bad news for the Akeredolu Campaign Organisation. With the development, the possibility of an alliance between Mimiko and the Akeredolu camp has been removed, and the APC now has less chance of winning in Ondo Central, which had been designated as a battleground between the APC and the AD. The Central senatorial district is expected to vote massively for the PDP candidate, who comes from the zone.

  • Ondo: Suit challenging Akeredolu’s candidature stalled

The absence of Justice Nnamdi Dimgba has stalled hearing in a suit challenging the candidature of Rotimi Akeredolu as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a stalwart of the APC in Ondo, Olusegun Abraham, filed the suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja, saying the process that produced Akeredolu was illegal.

Abraham alleged that the process that produced the defendant as APC governorship candidate was not in conformity with the law.

He also joined the APC National Chairman, Mr. John Oyegun and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.

The suit is seeking an interim order to restrain the APC from parading Akeredolu as its governorship candidate and stop Akeredolu from parading himself as such pending the determination of the motion.

At the resumed sitting on Wednesday, officials of the court informed parties to the suit that the judge was ill and unable to attend the day’s sitting.

Consequently, lawyers representing both parties picked December 6 as the next adjourned date for hearing of the case.

Justice Dimgba had at the last sitting on November 10 adjourned hearing of other motions in the suit till November 23.

I’ll bring refinery to Ondo, says Akeredolu

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, yesterday said if elected his administration will bring a refinery to the state.

The APC governorship candidate spoke at an economic summit organised by the Sunshine Progressives Coalition (SPC) held at the Adegbemile Cultural Centre, Akure.

Akeredolu said he will drive economic and industrial revolution into the state through foreign investors with Federal Government partnership.

He also said the sunshine state, having the longest shore line and the deepest part of the sea in the country, deserves a sea port.

  • I’ll turn Idanre to tourist centre, says Akeredolu

I’ll turn Idanre to tourist centre, says Akeredolu

THE governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State , Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,  has promised to turn the hilly town of Idanre to a world class tourist centre.

Akeredolu said farming and tourism must be encouraged to help build the state’s resources.

The APC candidate spoke with reporters at the palace of Owa of Idanre, Oba Fedrick Aroloye.

The APC candidate inaugurated a borehole built by the party’s State Deputy Chairman, Ade Adetimehin.

Akeredolu, who identified farming as the major occupation in Idanre, said encouraging tourism in the town will help in even development.

He promised that a golf course will be built to make the hilly town more tourist friendly and encourage patronage.

The APC governorship candidate said the road linking Idanre to Ofosu must be rehabilitated for easy movement from Idanre , particularly to Ore.

He said: “This is a town that is blessed and if you have had opportunities of travelling abroad and you see a town surrounded by hills, it is meant to be a tourist attraction

“Yes, we have Mare and some others but these are  seasonal things, Idanre hills have been the talk of this country for long but I think we can improve on it to make it more attractive

“So many people would want to come here with their children for tourism, and this is the place for it.”

Adetimehin said the warm reception given to the party’s candidate was a signal of victory in the forthcoming election.

Adetimehin said he has impacted positively in the town.

  • I won’t resuscitate ‘dead’ industries, says Akeredolu

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, yesterday said it will be difficult for any administration to revive dead industries in the state.

Akeredolu said the only option is to establish new industries through the old ones.

The APC candidate spoke during an interactive session with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in preparation for the November 26 governorship election.

Fielding questions from clerics, Akeredolu assured them that he is poised to take the state to enviable heights.

According to him, industries in the state are not just moribound but dead.

Akeredolu said it will be impossible to “wake the dead industries”, adding that new industries will be established from the old ones.
