Abbe: Nigeria has lost a committed administrator – Akpabio

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has described the demise of the former military Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Brigadier General Godwin Abbe, as a great loss to the people of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria in general.

In a statement from his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, the Senate President said General Abbe, who was also once a military Governor of Rivers State, was a “dedicated public servant, a patriot, and a trailblazer who contributed immensely to the development of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole.”

Akpabio recalled that General Abbe was, at different times, Minister of Defence and Interior Minister, adding that “His demise is a great loss not only to his family and the people of Akwa Ibom State but to the entire nation. His legacy of selfless service, integrity, and leadership will continue to inspire future generations.”

“On behalf of my family, the good people of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District, and the 10th Senate, I commiserate with the family of General Abbe, the government, and the people of Edo State, and I pray that God will grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

    Akpabio, Abbas pledge swift passage

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen vowed yesterday to ensure swift consideration and passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu laid the proposal before the Joint session of the National Assembly after giving a few highlights of the fiscal document, christened: “The Restoration Budget: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity.”

Both leaders spoke during the presentation of the document in Abuja.

Akpabio said: “On behalf of my colleagues, I assure Your Excellency of a swift evaluation of the 2025 Appropriation Bills.

“As expected, we will ensure that due process is followed in passing these bills. We will do what is right and justifiable, conducting public hearings to ensure that the voices of Nigerians resonate within the budget, for all budgets belong to the people.

“If public sentiment necessitates adjustments to specific allocations, we will respond accordingly, ensuring that such actions are not misconstrued as padding.”

In his welcome address titled: “A call to unity and progress”, the Senate President, however urged the President to caution ministers and heads of Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) to promptly honour invitations by relevant committees of the National Assembly to defend their allocations.

Addressing the President, Akpabio said: “Your Excellency, we have noted the 2024 budget performances of 50% for capital expenditure and 48% for recurrent expenditure respectively.

“Given these great achievements, we have deemed it necessary to extend the life of the 2024 Budget to June 30, 2025.

“The enabling law for this extension has already been put in place by this patriotic Assembly, as a testament to our appreciation for the great performance of the budget, ensuring we build upon your momentum.

“We commend your steadfast commitment to collaborate, cooperate, and work with the National Assembly to achieve your grand vision for Nigeria.”

Akpabio commended President Tinubu’s tax reform initiatives, saying: “It is disheartening that those who have not taken the time to understand these bills are the loudest critics. I urge all Nigerians, especially those in public office, to engage with these vital reforms thoughtfully.

“This initiative marks the first comprehensive tax reform since Nigeria’s independence, presenting a transformative opportunity for rejuvenating small and medium enterprises and enhancing the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians.

“Notably, your infrastructure renaissance has paved the way for many roads, including the Coastal Road and crucial arteries in Abuja Capital City and other parts of our dear country.

“These developments are not merely about concrete and asphalt; they represent the lifeblood of our economy, connecting our people and fostering growth.

“Let us take a moment to commend the tireless dedication of each member of this esteemed Senate and House of Representatives.

“Your steadfast commitment to the welfare of our people and the advancement of our nation is a testament to the enduring spirit of Nigeria.

“Your love and support for the Executive Arm in fulfilling its pledge to the Nigerian people make this 10th National Assembly a beacon of patriotism, altruism, and selfless ambition.

“In this moment, let us embrace the inspiring words of President Tinubu ‘Together, we will build a Nigeria that we can all be proud of.’ Let us march forward, united in purpose and unwavering in resolve, as we craft a future that reflects the very best of who we are – a nation of resilience, a nation of hope, a nation of greatness.”

Speaker Abbas commended the proposed budget, adding that the projections of 4.6% Gross Domestic Growth (GDP), a crude oil price of $75 per barrel, an exchange rate of N1, 400 to the dollar and oil production of 2.06 million barrels per day are bold but achievable.

He said: “Addressing these challenges requires urgent and comprehensive tax reforms to broaden our tax base, improve compliance, streamline administration and reduce reliance on borrowing.

“The National Assembly will continue to work with your administration to ensure that such reforms are equitable, effective, and considerate of the needs of vulnerable populations.

“To this end, we have engaged stakeholders to address concerns raised on the tax reform bills, fostering trust and cooperation.

“I have personally led numerous high-level meetings and consultations with state governors and other key stakeholders on this issue, achieving positive outcomes.

“As we approach 2025, we must embrace the realities before us with determination. Stabilising prices, boosting agricultural productivity, expanding infrastructure, and investing in education, healthcare, and security remain paramount priorities.

“To strengthen national unity and build trust, it is essential for the government to communicate its achievements effectively to the Nigerian people.”

He assured the President of the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the budget.

Abbas said: “This is not merely your budget; it is a national project requiring collaboration across all arms of government.

“We will work to ensure its timely passage, provide legislative support for critical reforms, and conduct robust oversight to guarantee transparency and efficiency in its execution.

“Let us take a moment to recognise and honour the profound sacrifices made by each and every Nigerian over the past year.

“The removal of fuel subsidies, rising inflation, and adjustments to economic policies have created challenges.”

“Yet these sacrifices are necessary for building a stronger, self-reliant, and prosperous nation. I call on all Nigerians to remain resilient and united in our collective pursuit of a brighter and better Nigeria.”

The bold steps taken by President Tinubu to reposition the economy have no doubt disrupted the status quo in the country, sparking strong resistance from vested interests, the speaker said.

He said the reforms which have begun to yield positive results are a clear indication of the President’s resolve to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, on Wednesday, vowed to ensure swift consideration and passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu laid the Bill before the Joint session of the National Assembly after giving a few highlights of the fiscal document christened budget “The Restoration Budget: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity.”

“If public sentiment necessitates adjustments to specific allocations, we will respond accordingly, ensuring that such actions are not misconstrued as padding.”

The Senate President in his welcome address titled: “A call to unity and progress” however urged the President to caution ministers and heads of Ministries, Department, and Agencies of the Federal Government to promptly honour invitations by relevant committees of the National Assembly to defend their allocations.

He said that the National Assembly is presently considering a Bill to extend the lifespan of the capital components of the 2024 budget from December 31st to June 30th, 2025.

While addressing the President, Akpabio said: “Your Excellency, we have noted the 2024 budget performances of 50% for capital expenditure and 48% for recurrent expenditure respectively.

“We commend your steadfast commitment to collaborate, cooperate, and work with the National Assembly to achieve your grand vision for Nigeria.

“However, let me take this opportunity to stress the importance of the Honourable Ministers and Heads of Extra-Ministerial Departments being prepared to respond promptly to requests for them to come and defend their sectoral allocation in the exercise of our legislative oversight.

“We have observed concerning behaviour from some ministers and heads of extra-ministerial departments, who sometimes neglect their duty to promptly submit to legislative oversight, sometimes even disregarding invitations from relevant Committees of the legislature. It is imperative they understand that we will not condone such breaches of the Constitution going forward.”

“To my compatriots, I acknowledge that it is not yet Uhuru. However, we are light-years away from where we began, though some rivers remain to be crossed. The pains we feel are not merely the pains of hardship; they are the pains of childbirth.

“When that season arrives in Nigeria, when this administration births that season, we will rejoice for the struggles endured. For now, I ask for your patience and urge all Nigerians to cooperate with the President and maintain faith in his vision.

“Mr. President, while you cannot be everywhere, you have eyes everywhere. We, the Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members of the House of Representatives are your eyes in our constituencies and every corner of Nigeria. When our constituents struggle to afford rice, they come to us. When their shoes pinch, they seek our assistance. When the economic alarm sounds, they turn to us. Therefore, we are committed to ensuring that you touch the hearts and pulse of Nigerians through these appropriation bills resonating with the sounds of hope and signalling the dawn of Nigeria’s economic rebirth.

“Let us take a moment to commend the tireless dedication of each member of this esteemed Senate and House of Representatives. Your steadfast commitment to the welfare of our people and the advancement of our nation is a testament to the enduring spirit of Nigeria. In his presentation, Speaker Abbas commended the proposed 2025 budget of N49.7 trillion, adding that the projections of 4.6% GDP growth, a crude oil price of $75 per barrel, an exchange rate of N1,400 to the dollar, and oil production of 2.06 million barrels per day are bold but achievable.

He said: “Addressing these challenges requires urgent and comprehensive tax reforms to broaden our tax base, improve compliance, streamline administration and reduce reliance on borrowing.

Stabilizing prices, boosting agricultural productivity, expanding infrastructure, and investing in education, healthcare, and security remain paramount priorities. To strengthen national unity and build trust, the government needs to communicate its achievements effectively to the Nigerian people.”

He assured the President that the National Assembly is fully committed to supporting the successful implementation of the 2025 budget, saying, “This is not merely your budget; it is a national project requiring collaboration across all arms of government.

“We will work to ensure its timely passage, provide legislative support for critical reforms, and conduct robust oversight to guarantee transparency and efficiency in its execution.

“Let us take a moment to recognise and honour the profound sacrifices made by each and every Nigerian over the past year. The removal of fuel subsidies, rising inflation, and adjustments to economic policies have created challenges.

“Yet these sacrifices are necessary for building a stronger, self-reliant, and prosperous nation. I call on all Nigerians to remain resilient and united in our collective pursuit of a brighter and better Nigeria.”

The Speaker said that the bold steps taken by President Tinubu to reposition the Nigerian economy have no doubt disrupted the status quo in the country, sparking strong resistance from vested interests.

He said the reforms which have begun to yield positive results are a clear indication of the President’s resolve to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians

He, however, said that while the reforms are yielding results, the current fiscal realities need critical reflection, saying despite being Africa’s most populous nation with over 220 million people, the 2024 national budget of $36.7 billion remains modest compared to countries like South Africa, with a budget of $160 billion for its 60 million citizens; Egypt, with $110 billion for 110 million people; Algeria, with $60 billion for 45 million people; and Morocco, allocating $50 billion for its 37 million residents.

“Indeed, Nigeria’s low tax revenue also remains a major constraint. Our tax-to-GDP ratio, currently at approximately 10.9% for 2024, is among the lowest in Africa, significantly below the continental average of 15.6%. In comparison, South Africa’s tax-to-GDP ratio stands at 25.4%, while Rwanda and Ghana, with much smaller populations, report ratios of 15.1% and 14.1%, respectively.

“Even our VAT collection efficiency – at approximately 20% – is notably below the near 70% efficiency achieved by South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, and Zambia,” Abbas said.

The Speaker added: “Over the past 18 months, your administration has taken bold and decisive steps to reform our economy. The removal of fuel subsidies, unification of foreign exchange rates, and introduction of innovative economic policies have laid a solid foundation for sustainable growth and development.

“While these reforms have demanded short-term sacrifices, they are acts of courage and patriotism. History teaches us that transformative progress often begins with difficult decisions. Examples from China’s market reforms, India’s liberalisation, and South Korea’s industrialisation affirm the enduring benefits of such bold action. These lessons inspire confidence that Nigeria’s ongoing reforms will foster economic growth, reduce poverty, and ensure long-term prosperity.

“Your administration’s reforms have disrupted the status quo, sparking resistance from vested interests. Yet, these courageous measures underscore your resolve to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians.

“The National Assembly stands ready to support these reforms through legislative backing and to facilitate public engagement for greater understanding and acceptance. Collaboration between all arms of government remains essential to achieving our shared objectives.”

The Speaker said 2024 has been a year of mixed economic fortunes with the National Bureau of Statistics reporting a GDP growth of 3.46% in the third quarter, up from 3.19% in the second, largely driven by the services sector.

He said: “Despite challenges posed by climate change and insecurity, agriculture remained a critical contributor, accounting for 17.22% of nominal GDP in the first quarter and 22.61% in the second quarter. However, inflation, rising to 33.88% in October, alongside escalating food and energy costs, continues to strain households across the country.

“Nonetheless, the International Monetary Fund’s projection of 3.2% growth for 2025 underscores a positive trajectory if reforms are sustained and structural issues addressed.”

Abbas said the President’s international engagements have further reinforced Nigeria’s global standing, adding that the agreements from the September 2024 visit to China are set to transform rail transport, enhance digital literacy, boost agriculture, and strengthen national security while elevating Nigeria-China relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

He said further that his engagements in France similarly secured €300 million for critical sectors, while Brazil’s $4.2 billion grant to strengthen agriculture underscores your focus on sustainable growth.

He commended the government for its remarkable achievements is advancing local government autonomy, ensuring that resources reach grassroots communities, and empowering them to address their specific needs, saying this commitment to transparency and accountability will have a lasting impact, particularly on our rural communities.

Budget: Akpabio tasks heads of MDAs on prompt response to NASS’ invitation

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has tasked heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) on prompt response to National Assembly’s invitation to budget defence.

Akpabio stated this on Wednesday during the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill by President Bola Tinubu before a joint session of the national assembly.

He said that it was important for ministers and heads of extra-ministerial departments to respond promptly to requests by the national assembly for them to come and defend their sectoral allocations.

“Let me take this opportunity to stress the importance of ministers and heads of extra-ministerial departments to be prepared to respond promptly to requests for them to come and defend their sectoral allocations.

“This is in the exercise of our legislative oversight.

“We have observed behaviours from some ministers and heads of extra-ministerial departments who sometimes neglect their duties to promptly submit to legislative oversight, sometimes even disregarding invitations from relevant committees of the legislature.

“It is imperative they understand that we will not condone such breaches of the constitution, going forward,” he said.

Akpabio commended Tinubu’s initiatives at strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

“Your (Tinubu’s) initiatives to strengthen our security framework stand as a testament to your resolve in tackling the pressing challenges of our time.

“We commend your tireless efforts, along with those of our brave men and women in uniform, for liberating our lands from the grip of terrors.

“Today, no community is under the threat of terrorism, a monumental achievement we celebrate together.

“The reduction in kidnapping incidents and the neutralisation of over 11,000 terrorists and insurgents is a testament to their patriotism, strength and determination,” he said.

According to him, Tinubu’s dedication to fostering international relations paves the way for fruitful partnerships that will propel the country forward.

    • Wike: I’m not bothered by criticism; Tinubu’s backing enough for me

Senate President Godswill Akpabio yesterday faulted Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara on his handling of the political crisis in the state, which has pitted him against Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, the Speaker and the majority of the members of the State House of Assembly as well as many stakeholders of his own party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, said a wise governor or President must forge a close relationship with the legislature.

The Senate President spoke as Special Guest of Honour at a Public Lecture and Book Launch held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital to mark the FCT Minister’s 57th birthday.

Wike himself said criticism from his political opponents meant nothing to him as “the support Mr President is giving to me is enough for me.”

“I do not require anything. The moment I know that my Mr. President is happy, the moment I know that my family is happy, the moment I know that my friends and associates are happy, what is my own? I just go on,” he told the audience that spilled from the hall onto the popular Sani Abacha Road and adjoining streets in the Government Reservation Area.

The lecture entitled Pragmatic Strides of a Visionary Leader and Contemporary Issues of Society, attracted thousands of Wike’s loyalists, friends and associates from different parts of the country and various walks of life.

The event was organised by the NEW Associates, a new political movement coined from the initials of the minister’s names, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Akpabio, who recognised Martins Amaewhule at the event as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, reminded Fubara of the power of the legislative arm.

Amaewhule leads the 27 state legislators loyal to Wike.

Akpabio said he realised as governor between 2007 and 2015 that in a duel between the governor and the legislative arm, the governor could be hurt by the other side, hence he had to fashion out ways to work with the Speaker during his tenure.

“For those of you who may not understand politics, we were taught that the parliament can turn a woman into a man and a man into a woman. As a governor, my greatest fear was my House of Assembly,” he said.

“So because of that I never travelled anywhere without my Speaker. Any time I didn’t see him for a day, I would send somebody to his house to invite him to come and have a lunch with me, and I used ideas to look at his face to know whether he was happy with me or not.

“The only place that can hurt a governor is the House of Assembly, and no court or democracy can stop that from happening. Any President that wants to survive like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu must hold the Speaker and the Senate President very closely the way he is holding us.

“Recently he conferred on us GCON, Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger. Whether he loved it or not, he did it.”

Akpabio wondered why, despite all the resources at the disposal of Fubara, he had not been able to woo some of the 27 lawmakers in the camp of Wike.

He deplored what he called politics of betrayal and treachery, saying such trend was affecting sustainability in governance.

His words: “I do not know what is happening in Rivers State, but I hope that the successor of Wike realises the fact that no matter how the bird flies, the legs are pointing to the ground.

“Something must be wrong. Today is not for politics. Today is for Nyesom Wike.

“But sometimes I wonder, I would never be the governor, given the resources of Rivers State, and then I disagree with my House of Assembly and I am not able to poach at least one member out of the other group.

“If I do not do that, it means that there is something wrong with my political philosophy.

“I do not care what people say. We must try to stop this politics of betrayal and politics of treachery, because it does not allow for good succession.

“Prof Julius Ihonvbere (Guest Lecturer and Majority Leader of the House of Representatives) in everything you said here, the word that was missing was ‘sustainability’.

“You cannot have sustainability in good policies and governance when the person taking over from you is interested in not destroying you alone but destroying everything that you built.

“If you are a politician, note, you must have opposition as people oppose you, they are also the step you can use to go higher.”

Akpabio, however, said when politicians served with dedication, passion, confidence and with open heart, God would lift them higher.

Turning to Wike, he said he did not become the FCT Minister by chance but that the position came because of his hard work as governor of Rivers State.

Continuing, he said: “I was discussing with one of my colleagues and I told him I do not know why a man will quarrel with Wike; if he shouts while we are sitting here, by the time I get to that door he has forgotten.

“He will be the one to carry his phone and call me and say ‘when are you coming to the house for lunch?’ And he has forgotten that we quarreled and I will tell him, after the quarrel?”

Akpabio, whose remarks drew intermittent laughter from the audience, said the multitude of people at the occasion was a testimony to the quality of life that Wike lives.

Citing the Minister’s performance in the FCT, the Senate President said Wike has transformed the federal capital by building roads in different parts of the city where such were never thought possible before.

He added: “Born in tumultuous year of 1967 when the fabric of our nation was being tested in conflict, you emerged, not in the safety of calm waters but amidst the storm itself when Nigeria was just beginning the war.

“The war entered inside you, the war of transformation, the war of infrastructural renaissance and the war of love for Rivers State.

“If the Rivers people do not appreciate you, please begin to love Akwa-lbom State. We appreciate you. Niger Delta appreciates you and South-South appreciates you.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, appreciates your work. The Government of APC appreciates you.”

He then mocked the PDP, saying only a progressive party like the APC would honour the likes of Wike.

“The truth is that in PDP, you do not deserve a man like Wike. That is why we are all waiting to grab him so you people can continue with those who would continue to betray,” he said.

Turning to Wike, he said: “You might have chosen to arrive at a calm period but instead you came forth when Nigeria was at war.

“It is perhaps this very fortitude that has shaped your character and had allowed you rise like an eagle, soaring high above the tempest that could defeat you.

“Your dedication to lifting communities as a governor, now as a minister, has left indelible marks on our nation’s history.

“The bridges you have constructed stand as testament to your commitment to progress and unity.

I recognised the fire within you long before when you became local government chairman of Obio-Akpor. You are indeed a great secret waiting to be unveiled; waiting for the nation to behold.

“Your contributions to the political landscape of Nigeria, especially during your days as governor, shine like a beacon of hope. Many will now say that you have done better now as minister that when you were a governor.

“As a leader of uncompromising integrity, speaking truth in every facet of life, even to higher authority, circumstances will not allow me to say all I would want to say. But one of them is ‘agreement is agreement’.

“You remind us that politics is not only about policies procedures but also about the people, about laughter, about comradeship, about remembering your friends but not forgetting your enemies and the shared joy of community and communal living.

“May this birthday, my brother, bring you as much joy as you have bestowed on many others and may you embrace even more adventures in service to our beloved country.”

I am not bothered about criticism, says Wike

Wike appreciated the NEW Associates and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Senator George Sekibo, for putting the event together, saying he was not bothered about criticism from a few people.

“For me, in life, what is important is, if you know what you want to do, and you know how you want to do it, then you go ahead. One thing that I can assure all of you here is that we will continue to make you proud.

“I will never be distracted. I will still be focused to achieve the results that Nigerians will know that Mr. President means well.

“Yes, so many people have talked about criticism. I can assure you, it is even people who inform me that people are criticising me.

“Frankly speaking, because I do not see them and I don’t hear them and I cannot reply them.

“I have told most of you, do not bother about criticism. What is important for you is to ask yourself if you are focused or you are doing what is expected of you to do.

“I tell them, the moment your enemies see that you do not listen to them and you are focused and are there to achieve results, they will be tired. And when you are being distracted, you are worried they will say yes, they have now gotten you.

“The only way that you can silence your critics is to show them your result. Show them your performance. I am happy that when we were coming last night, I saw the flyovers being painted, I said thank God, so there was work that they are now painting?

“I said thank God there was work that is being painted now. I have said if you are not important, nobody will talk about you.

“So, the support Mr. President is giving to me is enough for me. I do not require anything.

“The moment I know that my Mr. President is happy, the moment I know that my family is happy, the moment I know that my friends and associates are happy, what is my own? I just go on.

“If you cannot match up with what we have done, why not come out and say look, let the truth be told.

“I do not see anybody that will intimidate or threaten me. I have not seen that person. At the appropriate time we will talk politics. Now is for projects and projects in the FCT.”

We are standing by you, PDP tells Wike

Speaking at the event, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of PDP, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, said despite the antics of some persons with entitlement mentality in the party, majority of the people in PDP love and appreciate the minister.

He said such party members are with “one of the most committed and most loyal party leaders ever produced in PDP.”

He said: “Our mentor and principal that we are celebrating today who has never left PDP for a day is one of the most committed, most loyal party leaders we have ever had. He has done well and he is doing well and we wish him well in future endeavors.

“He is somebody who believes in equity, justice and fairness. Remember before the 2023 election, he sang a famous song.

“I used to follow my leader and Osun State Governor Seyi Makinde. Our leader, I still remember the G5 and I am telling you that many people in PDP appreciate you.

“We love you because you are always there for us not only when you need anything unlike some leaders who come running to us when they need something.

“We know you and we always love you and we appreciate you. Some people believe in entitlement mentality. We will always stand by you because you led the G5. You are a man of integrity, a man of honour and you are a performer.”

Arapaja, however, disagreed with some of the remarks made by Akpabio against PDP and wondered why the Senate President whom he described as a product of the PDP could attack his party of origin.

He said: “I am surprised when someone who is a product of the PDP will come here and say those things. I do not understand.

“Nobody can dispute the fact that the present Senate President was a governor of Akwa-lbom State under the PDP, and he performed.”

In the lecture, Prof Ihonvbere said Nigeria’s main problems of insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure, corruption, religious and ethnic tensions as well as poor educational facilities were not beyond resolution.

“Our problems can be solved. The Nigerian ruling class in fraction will be ashamed that it has not managed any of our problems successfully.

“We have created millions and billions but their legacies are hardly sustained. It is not lack of resources but management. Fixing Nigeria is not rocket science. It requires focus and staying the cause.”

The Chairman of the occasion and former President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), OCJ Okocha, described Wike as a superlative performer with a Midas touch.

“This is a man that we have given to Nigeria and we are proud to be his friends and associates.

“I want to thank us all for organising this public lecture in his honour. Knowing him, he would have opposed it, but I think the pressure on him was too much that his friends won the day and said let us honour you,” he said.

Akpabio throws shades at Fubara, PDP at Wike’s birthday lecture, book launch

…I am not bothered about criticisms, I am okay with Tinubu’s support, says Wike

…PDP to Wike: We stand by you

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has thrown shades at the Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Akpabio, who was the special guest of honour at the public lecture and book launch organised to mark the birthday of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday, mocked Fubara’s handling of the ongoing political crisis in the state.

The lecture entitled, Pragmatic Strides of a Visionary Leader and Contemporary Issues of Society, attracted thousands of Wike’s loyalists, friends and associates from different parts of the country and various walks of life.

The large event centre used for the occasion was congested and had spillovers of guests and residents at the surroundings and on the streets of the popular Sani Abacha Road in GRA.

The event was organised by the NEW Associates, a new political movement coined from the initials of the minister’s names, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Akpabio, who recognised Martins Amaewhule at the event as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, reminded Fubara how independently powerful the legislature is.

He said every wise governor or the President like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must fashion a way to hold the leadership of the legislature closely.

Akpabio said he realised as a governor in Akwa Ibom State that a governor could only be hurt by the House of Assembly and fashioned out ways to work with the Speaker during his tenure.

He said: “For those of you, who may not understand politics, we were taught that the parliament can turn a woman into a man and a man into a woman. As a governor my greatest fear was my House of Assembly.

“So because of that I never travelled anywhere without my Speaker. Any time I didn’t see him for a day I would send somebody to his house to invite him to come and have a launch with me and I used ideas to look at his face to know whether he was happy with me or not.

“The only place that can hurt a governor is the House of Assembly and no court or democracy can stop that from happening. Any President that wants to survive like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu must hold the speaker and the Senate President very closely the way he is holding us.

“Recently he conferred on us GCON, Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, whether he loved it or not he did it. He muscled the two Chambers together”.

Akpabio, who also launched a book on Wike, wondered why despite all resources at the disposal of Fubara, he had not been able to poach some of the 27 lawmakers in the camp of Wike.

The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State said people must rise to condemn politics of betrayal and treachery noting that such political orientation was affecting sustainability in governance.

He said despite all the insights contained in the lecture delivered at the occasion by the Guest Lecturer and Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, he did not address the critical issue of sustainability.

He said: “I do not know what is happening in Rivers State but I hope that the successor to Wike realises the fact that no matter how the bird flies, the legs are pointing to the ground.

“Something must be wrong. Today is not for politics. Today is for Nyesom Wike. But sometimes I wonder, I would never be the governor given the resource of Rivers State and then I disagree with my House of Assembly and I am not able to poach at least one member out of the other group. If I do not do that it means that there is something wrong with my political philosophy.

“I do not care what people say, we must try to stop this politics of betrayal,  and politics of treachery because it does not allow for good succession. Prof Julius, in everything you said here, the word that was missing was ‘sustainability’.

“You cannot have sustainability in good policies and governance when the person taking over from you is interested in not destroying you alone but destroying everything that you built. If you are a politician, note, you must have opposition as people oppose you, they are also the step you can use to go higher”.

Akpabio, however, said when politicians served with dedication, passion, confidence and with open heart God would eventually lift them higher.

Turning to Wike, he said he did not become the FCT Minister by chance, but that the position came because of the hard work he put in when he was the governor of Rivers.

Akpabio said nobody with his senses intact would sustain a quarrel with Wike, describing him as a man with a forgiving spirit.

“I was discussing with one of my colleagues and I told him I do not know why a man will quarrel with Wike, if he shouts while we are sitting there by the time I get to that door he has forgotten.  He will be the one to carry his phone and call me and say ‘when are you coming to the house for lunch?’ And he had forgotten that we quarreled and I will tell him, after the quarrel”, he said.

Akpabio, whose remarks intermittently drew laughters from the audience, said the multitude of people at the occasion came to honour the quality of life that Wike had led.

The Senate President appraised the giant strides of Wike in Abuja and referred to him as a miracle worker and a jewel.

He said the Minister had transformed Abuja, building roads to different parts of the capital city, where people initially thought such infrastructures were not possible.

Akpabio, who was accompanied to the event by many senators read their collective tributes to the Minister.

Addressing Wike, he said: “Born in tumultuous year of 1967 when the fabrics of our nation was being tested in conflict, you emerged, not in the safety of calm waters but amidst the storm itself when Nigeria was just beginning the war. The war entered inside you, the war of transformation, the war of infrastructural renaissance  and the war of love for Rivers State.

“If the Rivers people do not appreciate you, please begin to love Akwa-lbom state, we appreciate you. Niger Delta  appreciate you and Southsouth appreciate you.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,  President Bola Tinubu,  appreciates your work, the Government of APC appreciate you”.

Throwing some shades at the PDP, Akpabio said only a progressive party like the APC would honour the likes of Wike.

“The truth is that in PDP, you do not deserve a man like Wike. That is why we are all waiting to grab him so you people can continue with those who would continue to betray”, he said.

Turning to Wike he said: “You might have chosen to arrive at a calm period but instead you came forth when Nigeria was at war. It is perhaps this very fortitude that have shaped your character and had allowed you rise like an eagle, soaring high above the tempest that could defeat you.

“Your dedication to lifting communities as a governor, now as a minister has left indelible marks on our nation’s history.

The bridges you have constructed stand as testament to your commitment to progress and unity.

I recognised the fire within you long before when you became local government chairman of Obio-Akpor.  You are indeed a great secret waiting to be unveiled; waiting for for the nation to behold.

“Your contributions to the political landscape of Nigeria especially during your days as governor shine like a beacon of hope, many will now say that you have done better now as minister that when you were a governor.

“As a leader of uncompromising integrity, speaking truth in every facet of life, even to higher authority, circumstances will not allow me to say all I would want to say but one of them is ‘agreement is agreement’.

You remind us that politics is not only about policies procedures, but also about the people, about laughter, about comradeship,  about remembering your friends but not forgetting your enemies and the shared joy of community and communal living.

“May this birthday my brother, bring you as much joy as you have bestowed on many others and may you embrace even more adventures in service to our beloved country”.

I am not bothered about criticism, says Wike

On his part, who appreciated the NEW Associates and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Senator George Sekibo, for putting the event together, said he was not bothered about the ongoing criticisms of a few people.

He said: “For me, in life, what is important is, if you know what you want to do, and you know how you want to do it, then you go ahead. One thing that I can assure all of you here is that we will continue to make you proud.

“I will never be distracted. I will still be focused to achieve the results that Nigerians will know that Mr President means well. Yes, so many people have talked about criticism, I can assure you, it is even people who inform me that people are criticising me. Frankly speaking,  because I do not see them and I don’t hear them and I can not reply them”.

Wike, who said he was humbled by the crowd that identified with him, said he was satisfied with the support of President Tinubu.

He said all the criticisms were designed by his detractors to distract him adding that the only way to silence the critics was to achieve results for public interest.

He said: “I have told most of you, do not bother about criticisms, what is important for you is to ask yourself if you are focused or you are doing what is expected of you to do. I tell them, the moment your  enemies see that you do not listen to them and you are focused and are there to achieve results they will be tired  and when you are being distracted, you are worried they will say yes, they have now gotten you.

Tinubu sleeps well because Akpabio leads Senate, says Bamidele

Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele has praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stating that one of the reasons President Bola Ahmed Tinubu enjoys restful nights is due to Akpabio’s capable leadership in the Senate.

Bamidele made these remarks on Monday while speaking on behalf of a group of senators who gathered at Akpabio’s Abuja residence to celebrate his 62nd birthday.

According to a statement from Akpabio’s media office, the gathering was impromptu but included notable attendees such as the National Assembly Management team led by the newly appointed Clerk, Kamoru Ogunlana; political associates; Akpabio’s friends; and staff of the Senate President’s office, led by Chief of Staff Sylvester Okonkwo, who presented a birthday card and gifts on behalf of the team.

Others in attendance included Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Deputy Governor of Edo State Philip Shaibu, and prominent private individuals.

Senator Bamidele commended Akpabio for his leadership, adding that his colleagues are proud of his performance as Senate President.

“I know one of the reasons he (President Tinubu) can sleep well is because he has you (Akpabio) as the President of the Senate.

“He trusts you. He depends on you. He relies on you and he takes your words very seriously.

“Mr President of the Senate, we are all very proud of you. I’m standing with my colleagues. I’m always privileged to speak on their behalf and I know I’m not saying anything other than what they expect me to say.

“We are very proud of you. We just want to thank you for who you are and we want to thank you for the kind of leadership that you provide,” Senator Bamidele said.

When asked to propose a toast on behalf of former and present Governors, Senator Adam Oshiomhole, who was a two-term Governor of Edo State said: “This evening, I’m asked to give a toast to a man, elected the President of the 10th Senate. His leadership of the Senate reminds all of us that regardless of the platform upon which we were elected and regardless of the party of the 109 Senatorial Districts that we come from, once we have arrived at the Senate, we become a symbol of one united Nigeria.

“And in a moment like this, to speak of a man who had the appetite to tolerate debates and remind us that Senators are not meant to be stammerers and that democracy manifests better when there are controversies, not meant for the chicken-hearted, we must have the courage to face issues, debate them, build consensus and arrive at something in the national interest.  You don’t run away from difficult challenges. That is the message he (Akpabio) gave to us last week.”

Responding, Akpabio thanked his colleagues and other well-wishers for the gesture even though he had no plan for any event to mark his birthday.
