    • Reps begin probe of no-crude supply to local refineries, alleged sharp practices in industry

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has admonished the ad hoc committee investigating alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum sector to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable.

The Senate recently raised alarm over the persistent importation of hazardous petroleum products and the influx of substandard diesel into the market.

Akpabio, while inaugurating the committee, said it is expedient and instructive that it acts decisively and with a sense of urgency.

He added: “We must identify and hold accountable those responsible for these criminal acts. This is not merely an investigation, it is a rescue mission for our country’s future. The integrity and prosperity of Nigeria depends on our ability to safeguard our petroleum industry.

“Your mandate is to conduct a thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned. Collaborate with relevant agencies, industry experts, and stakeholders to uncover the root causes of these economic sabotage activities. Identify the perpetrators, their methods, and their networks.

“Furthermore, I urge you to propose robust and sustainable solutions to prevent future occurrences, strengthen our regulatory frameworks, enhance security and ensure that our legal and judicial systems are equipped to deal with offenders swiftly and effectively…”

The House of Representatives has also begun forensic investigation into the importation of adulterated petroleum products into the country, and the ‘no supply’ of crude oil to local refineries.

A joint committee of the House on Midstream and Downstream is carrying out the investigation which is expected to address sharp practices in the industry.

Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, said the parliament is determined to ensure that petroleum products brought into the country are of the best quality, while local refineries should be get quality crude for their operations.

Abbas, represented by the Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, said the investigations will delve into the complexities surrounding the importation of adulterated petroleum products, the difficulties of domestic refiners in accessing crude oil feedstock, especially the modular refineries, and the broader threats these issues pose to Nigeria’s energy security.

He said: “The resurgence of fuel queues at petrol stations, the increasing cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and the unavailability of crude oil feedstock for our downstream domestic refineries are of particular concern. The investigation will also extend to other related issues impacting the sector.”

The speaker added that the quality of petroleum products imported into Nigeria has come under scrutiny, saying the House must ensure compliance with global standards.

According to him, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), must guarantee that all petrol imported into the country is rigorously tested in laboratories to ensure it meets the standard sulphur and octane levels.

Senate president, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday, July 22, charged the members of the Senate ad-hoc committee investigating alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum sector to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable.

The Senate had recently raised alarm over the persistent importation of hazardous petroleum products and the influx of substandard diesel into the Nigerian market,

Speaking while inaugurating the committee, Akpabio urged the Committee to approach the task with utmost diligence, transparency, and commitment.

He said it is expedient and instructive that the committee acts decisively and with a sense of urgency.

“We must identify and hold accountable those responsible for these criminal acts.

“This is not merely an investigation; it is a rescue mission for our nation’s future. The integrity and prosperity of Nigeria depend on our ability to safeguard our petroleum industry.

“Your mandate is to conduct a thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned. Collaborate with relevant agencies, industry experts, and stakeholders to uncover the root causes of these economic sabotage activities and identify the perpetrators, their methods, and their networks.

“Furthermore, I urge you to propose robust and sustainable solutions to prevent future occurrences.

“Strengthen our regulatory frameworks, enhance security measures, and ensure that our legal and judicial systems are equipped to deal with offenders swiftly and effectively.

“It is also crucial to foster an environment of transparency and accountability within the industry to deter potential saboteurs.”

The President of the Senate told the committee members that the task before them was monumental but not insurmountable.

He added: “The future of our nation’s economy rests on your shoulders. We have faith in your abilities and trust that you will rise to the occasion. As the Senate President, I assure you of my full support and the support of the entire Senate in this critical endeavour.

“Go forth and fulfill this mandate with integrity and dedication. Let us work together to stop this ugly trend and restore the glory and stability of Nigeria’s petroleum industry. Our nation’s prosperity and the well-being of our citizens depend on it.

“It is my profound pleasure that I stand before you today with a deep sense of duty and responsibility to inaugurate the Senate Ad Hoc Committee tasked with investigating alleged economic sabotage in our nation’s Petroleum Industry.

“This industry, without a doubt, is the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, and any threat to its integrity is a direct threat to the economic survival of our beloved nation.

“The petroleum sector has been the lifeblood of our economy, providing the revenue that funds our infrastructure, education, healthcare, and numerous other vital sectors.

“However, the shadow of economic sabotage looms large, threatening to destabilize this critical industry and, by extension, our nation’s financial stability.

“Over the past few years, we have witnessed a concerning trend of alleged malpractices and economic sabotage within the petroleum sector.

“These allegations range from illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, oil theft, and other nefarious activities that have collectively bled our economy dry.

“The impact of these actions has been devastating, contributing significantly to our current economic downturn.

“Revenue losses from these illegal activities have deprived our nation of the funds needed for development and growth. They have undermined investor confidence, distorted market operations, and exacerbated our economic challenges.

“It is not just a financial issue; it is a matter of national security and sovereignty. If left unchecked, these acts of sabotage could cripple our economy and hinder our progress for generations to come.”

The Senate President, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has disclosed that leaders from the Ogoni ethnic nationality stopped him from completing the East-West Road when he served as the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Akpabio, who insisted that the leaders should be blamed for the current deplorable condition of the road said his ministry then has secured a budget provision to begin work on the project when the leaders stalled it.

He said the leaders led a delegation to the then President and pleaded with him to transfer the East-West Road from his ministry to the Ministry of Works, whose Minister was Babatunde Fashola.

The Senate President said the stakeholders succeeded in their quest not minding that he is the son of the soil and without regard to his developmental strides in Akwa Ibom when he was the governor.

He said his ministry could not use the N75bn Sukuk loan it has already secured to complete the road and that the works ministry could not undertake the project because it was not captured in its budget.

Akpabio spoke to thousands of stakeholders, who gathered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to attend the Niger Delta Stakeholders’ Summit organised by the Dr. Samuel Ogbuku-led Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) with a theme, Renewed Hope for Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta Stakeholders Summit was attended by all the governors from the NDDC mandate states

While two governors of Ondo, Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Bayelsa, Douye Diri attended the event in person; others from Abia, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Delta states sent representatives.

Nothing was heard about Edo State as the Governor, Godwin Obaseki was absent and nobody was mentioned as his representative.

Stakeholders from different walks of life, traditional rulers, youth leaders, captains of industries trooped to the Obi Wali International Conference Centre to partake in a summit designed to key the Niger Delta into the Renewed Hope of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan was the Chairman of the occasion; the Senate President, Chief Godswill Akpabio, was the host and also represented President Tinubu, who was named as the Special Guest of Honour.

Senators, House of Representative members, political and community leaders, former governors, Donald Duke of Cross River and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa among others graced the occasion.

Akpabio said: “Let me speak on my part as a son of the Niger Delta. The East-West Road would have been completed under my tenure as the Minister of the Niger Delta during the last administration.

“But some stakeholders particularly of the Ogoni extraction led a delegation to meet with the then President, Muhammadu Buhari, to inform him that they do not want the Ministry of Niger Delta to complete the road.

“They said that they wanted the road to be transferred to the Ministry of Works at that time headed by my brother, the former Governor of Lagos State, Fashola. I was very shocked.

“We have just secured about N75bn in our hands to conclude at least particularly from Eleme junction when that came. And the President said ‘well if that is what you want so be it’. Therefore the road at that time was then transferred to the Ministry of Works that had no budget that year for the East-West Road.

“Even the N75bn that we got from the Sukuk loan could not be used. What I’m saying is that it is the Niger Delta that sometimes brings down the Niger Delta.”

Akpabio, who lamented the development, said the summit should strive to put an end to the Pull Him Down Syndrome rampart in the Niger Delta.

He said: “This summit must resolve to abolish the syndrome of pulling him down. We must unite to abolish that syndrome. From the day the Ministry of Niger Delta stepped out of that road, no progress has been made on that road till today.

“The Ministry of Niger Delta inherited the road at eight percent. And as at the time our brother with some kings of Niger Delta came to insist that the money just released should not be used by the Ministry.”

He said 45 years after the late Dr. Joseph Wayas was made the Senate President from the region, President Tinubu made it possible for the region to produce another one in his person.

He said the NDDC was expected to drive the delivery of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the region.

He said President Tinubu was happy to associate with the summit.

Akpabio spoke on the East West road following the comments of Jonathan and Douye Diri about the poor condition of the road.

Jonathan, however, observed that political interference in NDDC was the reason why it had not lived up to its mandate.

He said: “The first leadership of NDDC led by Onyema Ugochukwu as the chairman of the board and chief Timi Alaibe who was the executive director finance and administration and he later became the MD showed some clear leadership and it appears as if the Niger Delta was moving to some direction.”

Diri on his part decried the state of the East-West and lamented his experience while navigating the road to attend the summit saying it took him four hours to get to Port Harcourt.

While appreciating President Tinubu for prioritising the development of the road, the Bayelsa governor appealed to the Federal Government to begin the construction of the coastal road from both ends of Lagos and Calabar.

He said: “Let me also use the opportunity to appreciate the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for prioritising the Niger Delta by appointing a board on time and a management team on time.

“Our region is in dire need of development. Everything has been said by everybody here and for me there is just one open thing that I will say, before today, the journey between Yenagoa and Port Harcourt is either one and a half hours or one hour.

“For those of us who even come with a convoy, one hour you are in Port Harcourt. But today, I traveled four hours between Yenagoa and Port Harcourt, our people are suffering. That road has collapsed.

“So while we appreciate Mr. President for the coastal road, there is a need to immediately go into the East-West road.

“If that contractor does not have the capacity, please Mr. President, hand over that road to the Niger Delta Development Commission.

“I was arranged to travel by air and I told myself those who are traveling on that road are Rivers people, Bayelsa people, and Niger Delta people, and if they are suffering let me go and see their sufferings. And I couldn’t believe what I saw today.

“And so I appeal particularly to our son who is here representing Mr. President to take this message to the president and let them act fast on the East-West road.”

The  Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments is a major victory for democracy, Senate President Godswill Akpabio,  House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abass, and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fabgemi(SAN),  have said.

While Akpabio and  Abass congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating the process that led to judgment, Fagbemi said it is an emancipation of the local governments.

They added that the judgment represents a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.

The trio spoke with reporters after meeting with President Tinubu, along with some senior government officials in Abuja.

Akpabio said: “Recall that the request was placed before the courts by the AGF because the federal government, through President Bola Tinubu, feels strongly about separation of powers and the need for autonomy of all arms of governments, so for us in the legislature, the Supreme Court has spoken and we have no option than to abide by the Supreme Court judgment.’’

He added: “This is a great day for democracy, and I congratulate the President for this initiative. I know that all Nigerians now know that local government administration is an arm of government meant for the grassroots and their money should be for the grassroots.

’’ Definitely, local governments can now undertake projects on their own. So it’s a great day for democracy and is the beginning of great things to come.”

Akpabio also praised the justices of the Supreme Court for the verdict and reiterated the parliament’s commitment to ensuring enforceability.

He said the issue of non-conduct of local government elections by some governors and called for elections that allow all political parties to participate.

House of Representatives Speaker Abbas expressed delight of over the judgment.

He described it  as a historic moment, culminating from two years of efforts by the National Assembly to ensure local government independence through various constitutional amendments.

Abass said the victory  is a victory for the legislature and the nation, paving the way for functional local governments that can serve their people without interference from state governors.

The Speaker expressed optimism that the judgment would enable local governments to extend goodwill to their constituents, unhindered by the excesses of state governors.

‘’The House of Representatives welcomes this significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey,’’ he added.

Fagbemi expressed delight at the decision, which he believes will empower local governments to develop their areas.

He added that the judgment required states to conduct elections for local government areas, placing the onus on governors to comply.

Fagbemi stressed that the judgment was clear on the consequences for non-compliance.

    Daniel congratulates Tinubu, Supreme Court

Ogun State former Governor  Gbenga Daniel said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demonstrated uncommon courage and leadership in a manner that seeks to return Nigeria on a trajectory of growth.

Daniel, in his reaction to the judgment, said: “President Tinubu and the Supreme Court have restored sanity to the Nigerian political space as this will allow the dividends of democracy to reach the masses.’’

The former governor and Senator representing Ogun East in the Senate, added: “This constitutional resolution is long overdue because the local government administration is the closest to the grassroots and they should have the capacity to impact directly on the lives of the people through the initiation of life-changing programs and projects.

“As a democrat, and a Progressive one at that, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has demonstrated enormous capacity in the struggle towards strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, and with this local government financial autonomy, he has once again set to recalibrate the wheels of our political and Economic growth in a way that it will make clear meanings to the average citizens.

Soludo,  Otu take  judgment in good faith

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo said the Supreme Court judgment aligns with his administration’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

Soludo, whose administration has yet to conduct council polls since 2021 when it came into office,  said it was imperative for resources to reach the grassroots in a manner that promotes accountability and transparency.

He spoke with reporters after meeting with President Tinubu in Abuja yesterday.

“The  Supreme Court is supreme, it’s the final authority, and am a Democrat. I believe in the rule of law and once the Supreme Court has spoken, it has spoken.

‘At a fundamental level, we need resources to get down to the real grassroots and we need the people’s money to work for them at all levels, whether at the federal or the state and the local government.

“We need to promote accountability. We need to promote transparency in the utilisation of public resources at all levels, to be able to lift the burden off the common man.”

Acknowledging that the Anambra State Government has not held local government elections, the governor reassured of his commitment to fulfilling his promise to conduct one soon.

‘’When I was elected, that’s one of the things I promised our people because in Anambra, we haven’t had, to be honest with you, I think the first local government election we had was in 1998 or something thereabout, and then the next one was in 2014 or 2013. And that was it. I mean, finished one and a half years or two years thereabout, and even the institutions the place is quiet, not strengthened,’’ he said.

Soludo’s counterpart in Cross River State,  Bassey Otu also expressed approval of the ruling, stating that it has been received in good faith.

He said: “Nigeria is a democratic country, and we know very well that President Tinubu and the renewed hope agenda is a democratic one. I believe that the judgment is taken in very good faith. All Nigerians should be happy about it.

“I don’t think anybody is against development in the local governments. I have not read the details of the judgment as passed, but when we do, I believe that the application of it should add some pep to our local government administration.”

    Atiku: It’s victory for Nigerians

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has commended the Supreme Court’s verdict on financial autonomy for local governments.

Atiku described it as a victory for Nigeria and a  major corrective action in greasing the wheels of national development.’’

“The judgment  affirming fiscal autonomy to local government councils in the country is a win for the people of Nigeria,” he said in a statement on his X( formerly Twitter) account.

The statement reads: “The court’s ruling is a step in the right direction and a major corrective action in greasing the wheels of national development across the country.

‘’The decision by the Federal Government to consolidate disbursements of local councils’ revenues into the state government accounts was a decision that was borne out of politics of hasty compromise.

‘’I align with the decision of the Supreme Court that the structure of the Nigerian government is portioned in three layers, and of these, the local governments should be centres of development.”

But Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for last year’s general election,  advised that the push for local government autonomy should not be limited to revenues.

He said: “I also share the belief that fiscal autonomy to the local governments should not be limited to revenues from the Federation Accounts, but indeed, should apply to Internally Generated Revenue from the respective local government authorities.

“Many of our states, especially those in the ultra-urban areas with high-density economic activities, have become notorious for muscling local councils from generating revenue on items that border on motor parks, outdoor advertising, rents, and many more.

‘’The verdict of the court is in tandem with the core functions of the Supreme Court as an arbitration court between and among governments.”

Verdict negates true federalism, says Ibori

Delta State former  Governor James   Ibori said that the verdict was an as assault on true federalism.

Although Ibori said he was opposed to state governors fiddling with local government allocations, he argued that that does not ‘’call for this death knell(judgment)  to the clear provisions of section 162(3) of the 1999 Constitution.

‘’The Supreme Court has dealt a severe setback on the principle of federalism as defined by Section 162(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

‘’The section expressly provides thus: “Any amount standing to the credit of the Federation Account shall be distributed among the Federal and State Governments and the Local Government Councils in each state on such terms and in such manner as may be prescribed by the National Assembly,” he wrote yesterday on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The former governor  said Section 6  clarifies that ‘’each state shall maintain a special account to be called “State Joint Local Government Account” into which shall be paid all allocations to the Local Government Councils of the state from the Federation Account and from the government of the state.’’

He added that the apex court decision could be seen as an erosion of state autonomy.

“The court’s ruling on the matter is an assault on true federalism. The federal government has no right to interfere with the administration of local governments in under any guise whatsoever. There are only two tiers of government in a federal system of government.

“I’m opposed to fiddling with the allocations to the Joint LG Accounts at the state level but that in itself does not call for this death knell to the clear provisions of section 162 of the Constitution, ‘’ Ibori said.

He pointed out that the judgment ‘’appears to contradict the explicit provisions of Section 162 of the  Constitution, shifts the balance of power between the federal government and states and may the financial independence of states and local governments.

Ibori added: “That local governments must be democratically elected goes without saying. Yes, I agree, that’s the position of the Constitution but withholding their allocation is not the way to go. It’s wrong.

“In the coming days, we will begin to fully understand the implications of the Supreme Court decision. An assault on the Constitution is not the answer to fiddling with the Joint LG Account.

‘’If the ruling is saying governors cannot temper, touch, fiddle with the joint accounts, that’s fine because they shouldn’t be doing that in the first place. But asking the Federal Government to pay local government allocations to the account of the Local Government directly is utter madness.

“Like Justice  Chukwudifu Oputa of blessed memory once said in describing the Supreme Court “We are not final because we are infallible, but we are infallible only because we are final.”

“It is my sincere hope that the judgment delivered today(yesterday) will be reviewed at the earliest time possible because it stands the concept of federalism on its head.”

“I will just call on all states of the federation to respect what the Supreme Court has done and then we will go back to the legislature and see where we can dot the i’s and cross the t’s to ensure the full implementation because you know the words of the Supreme Court are like the words of the king, they cannot go down to the grown without implementation.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Thursday, July 11, warned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and the Police Service Commission (PSC) to stop incessant squabble but should rather concentrate on providing adequate security for Nigerians.

Akpabio’s warning came as the red chamber confirmed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashim Salihu Argungu (rtd.) for appointment as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The Senate also approved the nominations of Chief Onyemuche Nnamani for appointment as Secretary and Retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu as members of the PSC, respectively.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on June 27, 2024, transmitted the names of the nominees to the Senate for consideration and approval.

The confirmation of the nominees by the Senate followed its consideration of the report of the Senate Committees on Police Affairs that screened the nominees.

Akpabio in his remarks, urged the police hierarchy and the PSC to co-exist in harmony for the benefit of Nigerians.

The Senate President said: “I want to congratulate the Police Affairs Committee for their painstaking scrutiny of the nominees and our members who made contributions during the consideration of the report.

Senate leaders have called on the estate surveyors and valuers in the country to bring on partnerships and programmes that will foster wealth creation and national development.

The duo, including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and the Leader of the Red Chamber, Opeyemi Bamidele, gave the charge on Monday at the inauguration of the 26th president of the Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Victor Alonge, held in Abuja.

At the event that drew the de la crème both in the professional and political circles, the gathering examined “The Role of Professional Bodies in National Development.”

Akpabio, who chaired the occasion, said that professionals all over the globe were key drivers of growth, economy and development.

Referencing other professional groups in the developed world, particularly the United Kingdom and Singapore, Akpabio said NIESV must strive to emulate the successes of those bodies and forge partnerships that will propel Nigeria towards a future of prosperity, sustainability, and inclusive growth.

“With President Alonge at the helm, there is no doubt that this institution will continue to thrive and spearhead the transformation of the built environment.”

The Senate President also urged the institution to use its professional expertise to tame exploitation of tenants in major cities in the country.

Charging the realtors, Akpabio said: “Lead the charge in curbing the exploitation of tenants by real estate agents, particularly in bustling cities like Lagos and Abuja.

“We look to this esteemed organization to establish industry standards and elevate the professionalism of real estate agents, ensuring effective monitoring and enforcement.”

According to him, professional bodies play vital role in national development by contributing to the growth and development of the country.

He urged them to continue to provide advice to the government on policies that are capable of driving economic growth, promoting social cohesion, and enhancing national security.

“They should continue to engage in best practices, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.

Bamidele said that professional bodies were key stakeholders in this journey towards a renewed Nigeria.

This, according to him, means that they must play a leading role in driving the change that we seek.

“And I believe that with their expertise, skills, and influence, they can make a significant impact.

“They should continue to pursue their human capital development drives by providing training and capacity-building programmes especially for government officials, civil society organisations, and the private sector.”

Alonge, who pledged to use his tenure to impact the profession and the nation at large, said his emergence was a call to make a positive impact through leading initiatives that shall enhance the relevance of the profession as well as the fortunes and well-being of our members across the country.

“I, therefore, promise not to betray our shared values and invaluable ideals of honesty, devotion, integrity, and professionalism, no matter the price.

“I shall make great efforts to consolidate on the accomplishments and enviable antecedents of our founding fathers and my predecessors in office, even as we seek to pilot the institution to a higher pedestal.

“I am determined to hold dear this great position of trust and responsibility, unanimously entrusted to me by you my noble colleagues and use it to advance the objectives of the profession and to the benefit of our society”, he added.

We’ll ensure quality healthcare for every Nigerian – Akpabio

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, says the National Assembly will ensure that every Nigerian has access to quality healthcare.

Akpabio stated this at a public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary) held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The public hearing include: “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital, Toro, Bauchi State (Amendment), Bill, 2024 and National Eye Centre Doma, Nasarawa State (Establishment) Bill, 2024”.

Akpabio, who was represented by Sen. Osita Ngwu, while declaring the event open, said that lawmakers must ensure every Nigerian has access to the care he or she needed.

“We must ensure that every Nigerian has access to the care he needs, when he needs it.

“By supporting these bills, we are fulfilling our constitutional mandate and demonstrating our dedication to the health and welfare of our people.

“By this public hearing, I’m reminded of our immense responsibility as lawmakers to shape the future of healthcare in Nigeria.

“The bills before us are not just pieces of legislation rather, they are the building blocks upon which we will build a stronger, more resilient healthcare sector that can meet the needs of our people.

“These bills sponsored by distinguished colleagues of this senate, is a testament of their foresight, passion and unwavering commitment to the well-being of our citizens,” Akpabio said.

According to him, in a country where access to quality healthcare remained a challenge for many, establishing specialised institutions such as orthopaedic hospitals and eye treatment centres was not just a necessity but a moral imperative.

Akpabio also said that the state of the health infrastructure in Nigeria was a matter of grave concern, adding that we lag behind other developing nations in terms of modern medical facilities and resource.

“This is a stark reality and we cannot afford to ignore it. The introduction of legislation to develop and manage our health care infrastructure is a crucial step toward bridging this gap and bringing our health care systems into the 21st century.”

Sen. Shehu Buba (APC-Bauchi) sponsored a bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital, Toro, Bauchi State.

Buba said that the hospital when established would proffer comprehensive orthopaedic care for joint replacement, fracture and arthritis which essentially, was what the people of the north-eastern part of the country lacked, particularly Bauchi State.

“It will also bring health care closer to the people at a reduced cost compared to private hospitals and will equally drastically reduce health tourism to other countries.

“It will stimulate economic growth, foster inter-regional integration and create job opportunities.

“It will also deter patients from patronising traditional bone setters, who enjoy patronage in the absence of specialised orthopaedic hospital,” he said.
